Partitions for osa

Preceeding the install, I notice that we need to set up at least four different slices, as recommend on different drives.
We are using hardware, raid 5, with about 56 gb free spread across five different drives..so the only reason to use different slices or partions is simply for system management. Its easy enough to figure out what the /u01 partition size should be, but what about the three database directories, /u02 , /u03 & /u04. What should their size be if they are partions? the same size...if they are in a raid, would you just have one big slice for all three, and then use symbolic links for each directory off of the root?
I can find no recommendation on this anywhere.

I have a G5 and can't run Snow Leopard. I just rebooted into Tiger, and Disk Utility there offered an additional volume format option called "Unix File System" for all three partition schemes, which I did not see in Leopard. However "MS-DOS File System" was still only offered for MBR and GUID and not for APM.
It would be interesting to know if Windows can actually read the FAT32 volume that Snow Leopard creates on an APM drive. I just found this:
[FAT32 External HDD formated with Mac OS not mountable on a Windows machine|http://superuser.com/questions/49068/fat32-external-hdd-formated-with-mac-os-not -mountable-on-a-windows-machine]
I just cleared the data on one of my externals and tried formatting it in various ways from my snow leopard machine. first I partitioned it APM with two partitions: one HFS and one FAT. then I rebooted into windows. Windows did not see either of the partitions. then I booted back into snow leopard and reformatted it using APM. then I booted into windows and it saw both partitions (I have snow leopard drivers installed in bootcamp so it can read HFS+). so there may be something to that link. the method in baltwo's link might be your best option.

  • Can I use One Hard Drive for 2x Time Machine Back Ups and another partition for all my data?

    Hi Forum,
I am planning to but a RAID disc set up, but if i get a 2 disc set up, on one disc, can i have:
Time Machine back up for one Mac
Time Machine back up for 2nd Mac
Anothe partition for all my data.
then have that RAID'd to second disc?

    no one?
and if this set up was on one disc, and one partition for one TM was for the Mini that has this drive attached, would TM back up this whole drive 2x TM Partitions and 1x partitions with data on, ok? it wouldn't get confused by trying to back itself up

  • I am setting up a time machine backup to a external Hard drive.  I want to backup by Mac book Pro running OSX 10.8.5. I would like to Partition the disk and use one partition for Time machine backups and the other for my Lightroom backups. How to do this?

I want to create a two partition disk. One partition for time machine, the other for Lightroom backup. Currently Time Machine is using the entire drive and it is doing the intial encryption and is about 29% complete after two days.  I've decided that I want to turn encryption off and partition the disk. So I do I start over?

With the external drive attached, open Finder>Applications>Utilities>Disk Utility.  Select the external drive from the list in the left side panel of the DU window.  In the main window panel, click Partition in the buttons top center of that panel.
Select the number of partitions you want and adjust their sizes.
For the first partition, click to highlight the partition, then select the format, Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and then the partition table as GUID [both of those are the defaults].  Click Apply and it will ask to confirm and erase and format that partion...oh, give the partition a name, like Backup.
Then repeat those steps for the second partition..and remember to name it...something like Lightroom.
Close Disk Utilitty and you are ready to send TM to the one partition, and do your backup of Lightroom to the second partition.

  • Partitions for OSX and Win-XP, Photo Library and Scratchdisk

    Hello everybody,
I have just received my 160GB hard disk for my MacBook, before installing it I have a question:
I want to run OSX, and windows XPPro
Within OSX I will be using Aperture
Within the XPPro environment I will be using CS2
    Question 1.
for the CS2 envrinment I want to partition a schratchdisk of appr. 20GB. Will I be able to use this schratchdisk from both OSX and XP depending on when I use them (I am also able to run CS2 from OSX)
    Question 2.
I want to access a single photo library from both OSX and XPPro, do I make an extra partition for this as well ?
I would be most pleased for any comments or alternative setups on partitioning.
    I will be using Bootcamp.
    Thanks in advance

I would only partition for scratch disk and running XP. For iPhoto it is best if the pictures are on the same partition as the operating system as it makes it easier to backup your data as my FAQ explains
    http://www.macmaps.com/backup.html
Before partitioning, be sure to backup your data at least twice, as partitioning may cause the drive to fail if there is anything wrong with it at the low level. Apple´s Boot Camp utility theoretically can partition without wiping the drive, and other methods of running XP on your MacBook may make their own virtual partition to run XP on which you can copy over to a formatted partition with the installer´s Disk Utility if you so desire, or you can keep on your main partition. This FAQ of mine explains what those methods of running XP on Intel Macs are
    http://www.macmaps.com/macosxnative.html#INTEL
You may find though you don´t have to run XP at all. There are many more compatible Mac compatible titles than you might think which you can find in the above FAQ.

  • Can i set up my drive as encrypted with different partitions for different versions of osx?

i have some questions about setting up an encrypted drive with different versions of osx installed on separate partitions, and how this choice effects time-machine and the emergency recovery disk.
I have a new/refurbished macbook pro with a SSD.  it already has mavericks installed.  i want to fully wipe the drive and reinstall everything my self because I'm odd like that.
    first wiping the current drive
Does the recovery partition get wiped if i use disk-utility to reformat the drive. Even thought the recovery partition does not show up as a partition, when i look at it with disk-utility? i would like to know I've wiped all partitions so that no little bugger gets left with out me knowing. Disk-utility does not show the recovery partition and this makes me concerned it might not wipe it.
Does mavericks automatically make a recovery partition during the installation process? Or do i need to make a new 1gb partition for the recovery disk?
Can i have two different partitions on my drive with separate installations of OSX on it? (one for work that i don't update the system os till my current project is done, and the other for experimenting with new software.)
will time machine back up both of the partitions or just one?
can i accomplish all this from a bootable usb drive or do i need to do this in target disk mode?
do i need to use a more capable utility than the stock apple "disk-utility"?
when reformatting the drive should i format it as encrypted or let file vault do this after i install mavericks?
how much does encryption slow down performance for things like photo/video/music production?

Do a backup before you do anything.
Does the recovery partition get wiped if i use disk-utility to reformat the drive
    It shouldn't
Does mavericks automatically make a recovery partition during the installation process?
    Yes.
Can i have two different partitions on my drive with separate installations of OSX on it?
    Yes.
will time machine back up both of the partitions or just one?
It will as long as one partition is not excluded in the Time Machine/Options.
do i need to use a more capable utility than the stock apple "disk-utility"?
No, just boot into the Recovery Volume (command  - R on a restart).
file vault do this after i install mavericks?
I would let File Vault do that.

  • How to add a partition for Windows XP

Hi, I recently received my T410 with Windows 7 pre-installed. I would like it to be a dual-boot system for Windows 7 and XP.
I had hoped to be able to create a new primary partition after shrinking the Win7 partition. However, it looks like my system already came with three primary partitions. They are
Volume, Layout, Type, File System, Status
Lenovo_Recovery (Q, Simple, Basic, NTFS, Healthy (Primary Partition)
SYSTEM_DRV, Simple, Basic, NTFS, Healthy (System, Active, Primary Partition)
Windows7_OS (C, Simple, Basic, NTFS, Healthy (Boot, Page File, Crash Dump, Primary Partition)
    1. Does SYSTEM_DRV need to be a primary partition?
    2. Since it looks like SYSTEM_DRV is just the system drivers, is it possible for me to either (a) change that partition to a logical drive partition or (b) move those files to a folder in the Windows7_OS partition? Then I am assuming that will free up a primary partition for XP and I can carry on with installing XP on that partition.
    3. If yes to question 2, what steps do I need to take to do either (a) or (b)?
The steps I am currently following for making it a dual-boot system are here: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/8057-dual-boot-installation-windows-7-xp.html, and http://www.sevenforums.com/installation-setup/67236-problems-dual-boot-win-7-win-xp.html. They don't address they case where the computer already has three primary partitions, unfortunately; and I figure this is more of a Lenovo question rather than a question for that forum.
    Thanks for your help.

not to put you off on what you're about to do, but depending on what version of 7 you have, pro and ultimate have an option to install a full copy of xp pro sp3 in a virtual machine within windows 7.  it will integrate windows 7 files into it so you can access them.  and it it actually is a full version of xp.  you allocate system memory for it to run and you can either have it set to shut down which will free up the resources or hibernate which won't.  although it loads much faster from hibernate.
before you do anything, i would burn restore discs in case something gets screwed.  make sure you have restore points set.

  • Find the partition for the fact table

    Oracle version : Oracle 10.2
I have one fact table with daily partitions.
I am inserting some test data in this table for old date 20100101.
I am able to insert this record in this table as below
    insert into fact_table values (20100101,123,456);
However I observed that the partition for this date does not exist in the table (all_tab_partitions) morever I am not able to select the data using
    select * from facT_table partition(d_20100101)
but I am able to extract the data using
    select * from facT_table where date_id=20100101
could some one please let me know the way to find the partition in which this data might be inserted
and if the partition for date 20100101 is not present then why insert for that date is working ?

This is a range partition - which means that each partition covers a range. And if you bothered to read up in the SQL Reference Guide on how a range partition is defined, you will notice that each partition is defined with the end value of the range it covers. There is no start value - as the previous partition's end value is the "+border+" between this and the prior partition.
I suggest that before you use a database feature you first familiarise yourself with it. Else incorrectly using it, and making the wrong assumptions about it, more than likely results.

  • Mac Mini won't boot to Mac after partitioning for Windows 7

    system:
    Mac Mini, late 2009
    Intel
    4 gig ram
500 gig hard drive, brand new
    OSX
Mtn Lion with Mavericks just installed, runs ok
    problem:
Adding 90 gig partition for Windows 7, now won't boot to either Mac or Windows
After a little bit sticky install of Mavericks, I had the thing running fine. I downloaded support sw onto the USB drive as per Bootcamp instructions, and started going through the wizard to install Windows 7.
First try:  "error" while creating the partition. I ran the Disk Utitliy, Verify Disk, found an error, ran Repair, it fixed the error
Second try: it started making the partition again, and then apparently just zipped through the partition making real fast (it finished so fast I could hardly catch it), then shut down in an apparent restart (as it's supposed to?), and from then on it won't reboot all the way. I get about 15 seconds of gray screen, the Win 7 disk jerks a little, then screen goes blank and silence. No hd activity. Tried restarting with all the usual key combinations (Command-R, "X" key, Option key, etc, etc). Nothing will bring the Mac login screen up again.
What gives? It is such b.s. for this stuff to be so flaky. This is all totally current software on the Mac side, running fine for days, and an apparently ok partition created. Fix me, Apple.

Got it. Thanks for the help.  Isn't there any boot disk thing that I can just stick in there that will jerk the OS sideways and give me the Mac login screen, or did the Bootcamp/partition attack just wreck everything?  I don't see why I have to do an entire scrape of my totally updated and formerly working OSX just to retry a routine Bootcamp partition, which the girl at the Mac Store in Seattle here assured me has worked for them all the time.   It really is a crock. Maybe I shouldn't bother trying to put Windows 7 on there at all if all these latest versions are so flimsy. I wouldn't want to have to do it all again. But it looks like I'll have to at least once. And send Apple the bill for my wasted time. I ain't feelin' the glamour.

i lost my recovery partition for hp dv6 63300ee, with windows 7 home,, what can i do to back it?

    Hi,
This assumes that Windows 7 was the original OS that your notebook came with.
If you created a set of Recovery Discs you can use these to reinstall the original OS - they will also re-create the Recovery Partition on the Hard Drive as well as reinstalling all your original software.  Remember this is a destructive process, so back up any personal files etc that you wish to keep before reinstalling the Operating System.
If you don't have your original Recovery Discs, you can order a replacement set using the link below.

  • Creating a partition for UEFI (Install Help)

Hi everyone. I've been trying to search for an answer for this for a while and have came up blank. I'm ready to switch over to Arch Linux officially, after testing it in VirtualBox for a while. However, I'm a tad confused on some of the documentation for the partition setup for UEFI motherboards.
I understand partitioning can be more of a 'personal preference' type of thing, but was wondering if someone might be able to assist me in how it should be setup.....
Reading from https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Un … n_in_Linux, should I create the partition like so or should there be a separate boot partition for UEFI?
Should it be setup like this?
Name Flags Part Type FS Type [Label] Size (MB)
sda1 Boot Primary Linux 15440 <-- FAT32 Filesystem for UEFI
    sda2 Primary Linux swap / Solaris 1024
    sda3 Primary Linux {rest of space}*
    or like this...?
Name Flags Part Type FS Type [Label] Size (MB)
    sda1 Boot Primary Linux 15440
sda2 Boot Primary Linux 512 <-- FAT32 Filesystem for UEFI
    sda3 Primary Linux swap / Solaris 1024
    sda4 Primary Linux {rest of space}*
Additionally, secondary question, from the Beginners Guide, it has the following line for installing GRUB..
    grub-install --target=x86_64-efi --efi-directory=/boot/efi --bootloader-id=arch_grub --recheck
For "--efi-directory=/boot/efi" is this something that I will need to create manually? I saw some forum posts where people needed to place something in their bootable usb drive, but I'm using a Live Disk. Thanks.
    Edit: Solved second question.

After much research, I've found a lot more information on this. I'm going to take this approach I think..
    Setup partitions like:
Name Flags Part Type FS Type [Label] Size (MB)
    sda1 Boot Primary Linux 15440
    sda2 Primary Linux swap / Solaris 2048
    sda3 Primary Linux {rest of space}*
After setting up file systems.. Then do this..
    # mount /dev/sda1 /mnt
    # mkdir /mnt/boot/efi
    # mount /dev/sda1 /mnt/boot/efi
    When installing GRUB..
    # pacman -S grub-efi-x86_64
    # grub-install --target=x86_64-efi --efi-directory=/boot/efi --bootloader-id=arch_grub --recheck
    # grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg
Can someone confirm if that is the correct setup? Also, as it states I need to make it a FAT32 Filesystem, will this affect anything if I have my entire boot partition on FAT32?

  • Advantages of using partitions for tasks

I like my setup on one partition.  But I'm wondering, are there advantages to using separate partitions for /, /home, /boot, and swap?
Simple question, but I'd like to know the answer from many sources, cause it seems like the type of question that has multiple answers.

My laptop and a little server in the home which I'll set up to the face the internet at some point so I can get to files/music etc have split partitioning: / /usr /var /home /tmp (via tmpfs) and separate /boot (needed for lvm/encryption/funny filesystems). I set up the partitions on advice of some of the hardening guides (see wiki). As well as allowing for problems with huge log files crashing the system as mentioned above, the idea is to have separate partitions to restrict what can be done in each area of the file system via mounting options in fstab. Eg, one of the options you could give to /var and/or /home would be noexec, so no exectuables/scripts could be run. If someone breaks in, it should make it harder to gain complete control.
It's prob overkill, but I am a big fan of peace of mind It doesn't take much longer to set up (make it lvm so you don't have to worry about getting the partition sizes wrong) and it doesn't hinder how my system runs in any way.

  • How to use a 2nd partition for data storage?

The 40 GB hard disk on my satellite L10 was delivered with two 20 GB partitions (drive C and D). I now understand (by reading this forum) that it is preferred to use one partition for data storage.
Until now there was no need to use the D-drive. But by now I need the extra space.
How can I use the folders structure in windows XP home (My Documents etc) and put the data on the D-drive.
We work on this computer with several accounts.
I tried to move one folder out of My Documents to the D-drive, but then it can be reached by the other users. Should I use shortcuts towards the D-drive? I hope there is a simple solution.
    Thanks in advance.
(I tried my best to write this in English....)

    Hi
I didnt tried it before but you can try to make your personal folder on D partition. The notebook administrator should set the security settings that can be found under folder properties. Go to Security tab and check all permissions for other users. Choose Deny option for all of them.
I believe that on this way you can use your data folder alone and be sure that other users can not read or execute any of your private data.
Please let me know if it works properly.
