Partitions messed up

A few hors ago, I was trying to install Ubuntu along side my Mac OS. After making a bootable drive and everything, I decided to make a partition to install and boot Ubuntu into using Disk Utility.
I allocated 60GB as a partition and made it free space. After taking around 20-30 minutes, the partition failed. But the free space still shows up in Disk Utility but now as 260GB! It won't let me drag Mac HD into the free space either! When I click verify disk this is what I get

I booted in using Recovery HD and it still won't let me repair disk! What do I do?? I'm very confused and can't understand!

PLEASE HELP!!!!!

A couple of follow up questions.
1. Does this external hard drive have to be completely blank? I have an external hard drive but it has stuff on it.
2. Say I manage to clone and boot in, do I just erase Macintosh HD entirely? And this will keep Mountain Lion etc. all intact?
3. And how does one boot in from a USB external? I've done it with bootable pen drives but never with files on an external.
Sorry if some of these may same idiotic and rather simplistic but I still can't figure out how a simple dual boot went wrong and so I'm a bit nervy and don't want to mess anything up further.
Thanks!

• Partition messed up bootcamp

Hey,
Looking through all the topics I've seen that after creating a partition and removing it, bootcamp won't show up when rebooting but still shows up in my disk utility. I'm willing to put the effort and time to get my bootcamp back up working. My windows is 8.1 and I'm on a macbook pro retina with OS X 10.9.5. Hopefully someone here can't direct me through getting this fixed.
Thanks

• Macbook Partition messed up.

Okay, so here's my problem
I decided to dual boot my Macbook Pro (late 2011) for school since most of the software in my classes were more Windows friendly. I first installed Windows 7 using Bootcamp and got Windows working. I then partitioned the Mac HDD (into another part called TEMP) and downloaded the Windows Support Software from bootcamp onto it. I booted up in Windows after and ran the software and everything was setup fine.
Now here's the problem.
After I got everything working, I went back into my Mac OS and tried to reformat the TEMP partition and combine it back with the Mac OS. Instead, my MacBook made a 3rd new partition with random numbers and letters. This hard drive was unmounted and empty, could not be mounted, and had 750gb of storage (which is the total amount of storage on my hard drive). I restarted my computer and now it is completely empty. No OS or anything.
I think what happened was that the computer is now only reading that third partition (since it is the biggest partition and takes up the hard drive space completely). In effect, the Mac OS and Windows OS are unreadeable, but I think they might still be there. Is there anyway to detect the operating systems or do I have to do a new install?

Hold down Command+Option+r key when rebooting. That will boot you to the Internet Recovery HD system which boots the computer from over the internet. Have your system Wired to your router, Ethernet cable from computer to router. Open Disk Utility and select the Drive makers name, Top Level, and the Partition Tab. Select One Partition from the drop down in the Partition Layout area. Name it Macintosh HD and format it Mac Extended (Journaled) then click the Apply button. Once that finishes exit out of Disk Utility and select Reinstall Mac OS X.
In the future once you create a Windows Partition fo NOT fool with any partitions on the drive. There is NO need to create a separate partition to download the Windows Support software.
Basically you have HOSED your system and everything needs to be rebuilt. Both OSs and all you files and programs.
Hopefully you have a backup of some type. If not then you have learnt a great lesson. Which is if you don't have backups of your data you will LOSE it.

• Fixing partition mess

Hello Apple Community,
A while back I tried to partition my drive so that I could install Windows with Boot Camp.  I'm not sure what I did but at the moment I have a 160G partition (disk1) that is available and another 160G that I'm unable to write to (disk0s2).  My understanding is that the disk0s2 160G partition is part of the boot disk and I would like to make it accessible either by increasing the size of the partition that I can access or creating another one that is accessible.
I'm not very familiar with terms and so I'm not sure if I'm using the term disk/partition correctly but if anybody has any feedback then I thank you!

Apple's instructions are provided in five easy steps:
1. Start up in Mac OS X.
2. Quit all open applications and log out any other users on your computer.
3. Open Boot Camp Assistant.
4. Select "Create or remove and Windows partition" and click Continue.
5. Either click "Restore" if the computer has a single disk or "select the disk with Windows on it, and
then select 'Restore to a single Mac OS partition' and click Continue" if the computer has multiple internal disks.

• TRYING TO DO SYSTEM RESTORE BUT "NO PARTITION FOUND"

I have an HP Pavillion g6 notebook that operates on windows 8.  I was trying to do a windows system restore because my computer is having lots of issues lately and it is less than 1 year old.  The fan is constantly running very loudly, computer is hot, there seems to be a process running in the background and flash plugin is constantly crashing on mozilla/I.E. The problems got even worse when I upgraded from windows8 to windows 8.1.
When I went to do the windows system restore through the hp support assistant, it gets stuck, and when i tried to do it while powering on by continuously hitting f11 to get to the boot menu, it says it cannot restore due to no partition... I also cannot do a complete HP reset because when i power on my computer now since the upgrade to windows 8.1, it seems to skip the point when I am supposed to hit esc for boot menu and goes instantly to the start screen.
I looked into this missing partition mess, and tried "test disk" as suggested in this post, which seems to only assert the fact that a partition is missing and gives me know way to add one.
PLEASE HELP! any advice (and please keep in mind while i do consider myself rather computer savvy, i'm no geek squad so dumb it down a bit) would be VERY HELPFUL! My computer is too new for this crap.

• Added third partition and cant boot into Windows.

So I had windows 8.1 bootcamped, and being the idiot i am, created a third partition, messing up my bootcamp. I am unable to boot into Windows now. I suspect my mbr and gpt are out of sync, but do not know how to fix this. By the way, both disk utility and finder show that the bootcamp partition is there, but there is not option to boot into it on the boot selection menu thingy.

Back up your data. Erase then format the drive. Reinstall OSX and Windows.

• Interesting problem with RAID, Windows 2008 server, and Ubuntu

sooooo, i got the system working and linux loved it.  just adored it.
however, Windows did not.  Windwos 2008 server hard locks from time to time.  i fianlly figured out that it had to do with the RAID 0 i was running, that didn't really succeed.
However, when i rebuilt the RAID and everything on it, it refuses to recognize the disk, sayign that windwos cannot determine if this drive has a valid system volume on it.
Ubuntu 9.04 server, however, just took it and made it work great.
I enabled the PCI Bus SATA to be Master in the BIOS, and then Windows Server 2008 said that it could not determine if the drive was bootable.  Then i went back and redid the raid, and it did the original error.
I inserted a windows xp disk, destroyed the RAID, and then installed the software on a NEW disk.   While it installed fine, it gave me an IRQL_not_less_than_or_equal error.  It boots in safe mode, but no where else.  I tried installing the NVRAID and MCP55 drivers in safemode and what not, but still, it refused to cooperate.  I went back to ubuntu, this time the desktop/workstation versions, and i am doing an alternate install with RAID...much to my disappointment becuase now i will have to use VirtualBox to isntall windows...and if that fails, i'll be really pissed.
My settings are as follows:
SATA Controller 0-5 enabled
NVRAID- enabled
PCI BUS SATA- Option ROM Enabled, Master Enabled, and 0040h latency
MAC LAN- same as above
MAC LAN1- has master disabled, but the other stuff is the same
Serial port A is on AUTO, B is disabled, and floppy is disabled.
Option Rom is PFA relocation.
Also, my AEC A6880 is giving me a ROM expansion error, even though, in both OSes it can be seen....usualy.  I just want to fix it
lastly, my LSI PCI-E scsi adapter is not being seen at ALL.
thanks guys.

• Any fix for touch pad issue in mac book pro on windows 7?

Hi, I've recently installed windows 7 and parallels in my mac book pro. While i run windows with the parallels track pad, scrolling and right click are functioning properly. But when i logon to windows directly none of them are functioning.
Pls lemme know if there is any fix for this.

Running Windows in parallels from the BootCamp partition messes the original installation. My experience. You will have to remove the parallels virtual machine from mac and did a complete reinstall of Windows later. It is better to keep your virtual machine separately.
This is not true. Running Bootcamped Windows from Parallels or Fusion does not impact the Bootcamp installation of Windows. It just provides a different access to the single Windows installation. Both Parallels and Fusion support this configuration and instructions for how to use Bootcamped Windows as the virtual machine's tartget operating system is included on each virtual machines's respective site.

• Late-2009 iMac elusive freezing when uploading video

Hey All,
So I am currently experiencing a freezing problem when I try to upload youTube videos through firefox and/or safari after... a checkered past. Hopefully this isn't TMI, just being thurough to save your valuable effort.
iMac Details:
21.5-inch, Late 2009
3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
4 GB 1067 MHZ DDR3
ATI Radeon HD 4670 256 MB
OS X 10.8.5 (12F45)
I am using bootCamp with windows 7
-fyi i did have w7 virtual RAM manually defined (properly or so I thought) and have since reverted to cpu defined vram.
Funny part is when I was exporting a video from iMovie while simultaniously mixing tracks on virtualDJ while playing a youtube video, everything was fine. Now the history...
1. Trouble started when I was getting the 'click of death' and the 'beach ball of death' seemingly at random while running various apps one at a time.
         -I reset my PRAM
-I was and am still totally unable to run AHT (superdrive is dead and all key comands do nothing)
-I verified disk permissions (there were a lot of errors so I repaired them)
-I verified the disk (it passed), I repaired the disk even though it didn't need it.
-I downloaded, installed and ran MemTest. (passed 100%)
-I determined that I might have a kernal extension problem so I deleted Virtual Box and that seemed to calm things down... for awhile.
2. So there was peace in the galaxy for a couple months until after running in my windows partition I tried multiple times and could not boot into my OS X partition.
         -I again reset PRAM
-I again verified and repaired disk permissions (all went fine, tho agian there were many permission errors)
-I again verified and repaired the disk (even though it passed)
         -I safe booted, it worked
-I booted into OS X, it worked.
3. Now, I can restart OS X whenever I want but hard freezing (finder is not responding and refuses to relaunch) still occures when uploading video to youTube having tried multiple browsers.
-Before when it froze Activity Monitor showed no disk activity, and plenty of realMemory was available.
-I haven't actaully gotten a read form Activity Monitor when trying to upload. I will tho.
-I have been unable to find any 'memory leaks' tho I may not understand how to track this
-My bootcamp partion is totally fine and I've since allowed the CPU to define vram
-Memtest just now passed all tests.
-I have had to do hard restart several times while trying different internet browsers.
-My OS X partition has 344.22 GB free of 1.35 TB.
-I have no external hardware plugged in, only a USB keyboard and mouse.
So, a few questions...
         1. Did my manual addition of Virtual RAM on my bootcamp partition mess up my ram? if so why does it still test okay?
         2. Do I have to run memtest as the root user to get a real read on my ram? I haven't done this, yet.
         3. Why do I still get freezes while uploading video even tho when I try to max out my memory usage everything runs fine, no freezing?
         4. Is my hardrive messed even tho it passes checks when I'm booted to an external recovery drive?
         5. Is Apple trying to tell me they want more of the money I don't have anymore because I bought this thing 5 years ago?
Ya'll are heros for even trying. You knew that. I'm just reminding you.

So, I've been attempting to solve the issue by using diskUtility to erase free space on my mac and bootcamp partitions to identify bad drive sectors. Unfortunately erasesing free space did not work after defrag on the bootcamp partition. It simply crashed.
Intitally on the OS X partition I did successfully erase free space and that improved all problems for about 3 days. Then freezes became random and increased in regularity. So I moved about 500GB of data to an external drive (the important stuff) and tried to erase free space again to make it identify bad sectors. So I've tried both booting into my external and recovery drive and having the utility erase free space. Both atempts failed when the utility simply gave up after 2hrs and would no longer recognize the drive. I'm booted into my mac partition right now and am gettimg more random freezing with 2/3 of the drive free.
I'm resigned to claiming warranty and replacing the drive after upgrading it about 2yrs ago but can't find any real info on what my model and serial number are. All info that I've found does not seem to direct me to the correct information as I've tried entering it into Seagate's website and it will not accept my input. Any advice on claiming on my Seagate warranty and possibly what the model and serial number should look like? I can't seem to find the right numbers.

• Installing Windows 7 64bit?

Hello, everyone first post on here . Umm, ok so I went through the boot camp setup etc, everything works fine and it reboots. However when it reboots it goes to a black screen and says choose boot type 1 or 2. Yet, it doesn't have any words beside the numbers, so I try to press 1 and/ or 2 but nothing, press enter etc and nothing. It goes back into os x fine, but what's wrong, I really want to setup windows 7 in boot camp!??

Thanks for your quick reply.
My Startup Disk shows a Mac OS X on Mac HD icon and a Network Startup icon - no Bootcamp. But, my desktop shows a Bootcamp mounted drive - not sure what this means. Shouldn't I see an icon for the Bootcamp drive?
I noticed in one of your other posts you talked about shutting down the box, removing the OS X hard drive and rebooting - this should take me into W7. Then what - look for updated drivers for BC? Use System Repair to repair what? Is the OS X partition messed up? Did W7 trample on my Mac hard drive? I'm not even sure what's wrong...
Is there a problem with BC 2.0 not supporting the 64 bit W7 RC (7100) OS? It appears some folks have got it working (however, many posts fail to mention if they've installed the 64 bit or 32 bit version).
My hard drive set up goes like this - OS X is on the main drive (the 640Gb drive that came with the box) and I'm trying to install W7 on a 1Tb drive. I've also got a second 1Tb drive that I will use for archiving (once I get this dual boot thing going). So, as you can see, nothing fancy.
I used BC Assistant to partition the 1Tb drive that I've set aside for W7 - I used FAT32 with the understanding that when I installing W7 I'd reformat with NTFS - seems to have worked, but not sure if this is the correct way to do it.
As you can see, I'm pretty close to getting it going, but getting a little frustrated - BC seems a little flakey - but then again, I'm trying a new 64bit OS, so I shouldn't be too quick to blame

• Did hard reset, now cannot load pictures and TX will not see Card

I did a hard reset to clear get back to factory settings and give it to my husband when I got a new pda. But it lost a lot of its 'factory' programs. I can't get any photos/video on it, music and the card reader isn't working either. I'm not sure where to even begin. I changed the name back to mine and did a sync so that all my information went back on it by copying all of my back-up info from my back-up file (I'm now on Snow Leopard) to an old machine running Tiger and did a sync there, which should have restored it to the state it was in before the hard reset... all of the files were there... but still no photos or card. It acts like it sees the card, but it says there is 0 space available and it is a 1g card that is empty.
Post relates to: Palm TX
This question was solved.
View Solution.

I resolved the issue. I re-installed the card reader. It would then 'see' the card, but still wouldn't let me write anything to it... Though the card was showing by the amount of data available that data was actually going onto the card, the palm still wasn't seeing it. I did not think to take the card out of the Palm when I did the hard reset and somehow the SD Card got corrupted or the partitions messed up. I could not reformat the card while in the Palm since the Palm was not able to recognize it at all. I took it out, used Disk Utilities and wiped the SD card, put it back in the Palm and was them able to reformat the card. It has worked fine after that.

• Time Machine & storage

Hi Everybody
I have this Iomega external hd formatted to use with Time Machine but I would like to also use it for storage...I suppose that I'll need a partition for that but can I add it now and leave the existent backup volume untouched? Could you kindly explain how can I do it?
Thanks a lot

Sorry if my English is not always clear, it is a second language for me. Be glad you do not have to hear me try to speak English!
What I was trying to say above was that your TM backup is a critical piece of data. It is the only other copy that you have mentioned of everything of value to you on your HDD. Since you are determined at this point to use the ext HDD for both TM and another storage, then you need another partition.
A program such as iPartition says that it can create a new partition on your ext HDD without affecting the current partition, in this case TM. But there is no guarantee that the will be the case. While making the other partition an app such as iPartition could mess up the other partition and at some point in the future when your int HDD has perhaps bailed on you and you loose the data and then you check the TM backup and find that that has also bailed because creating the new partition messed it up, why take the chance?
Just use Disk Utility and erase the ext HDD and create your two partitions the size you want and then make a fresh TM backup onto the TM partition.

I have an HP pavillian G6 that I have totally messed up.
It came with windows 8, and I had no intention of removing or dual booting it.  I wanted to partition the C drive to chop off 10 gigs for a seperate partition for Outlook files.  I used EASEUS Partition Master 9.1.0 Home Edition.  It seemed to be working fine.  When I rebooted to allow the partitioning, it failed and gave me an error message.
I restarted and got an error message loading.  If I had stopped there I might have been okay by running a repair from a Windows 8 install disk.  At that point I did not have one, so I decided to pop the hard drive out, put it into a usb hard drive enclosure and check it out.  The 10 gigs were removed from the C drive, but the new partition was never created.  I decided to go ahead and finish that process from my Windows 7 PC.  Of course, that didn't work.  So I decided to put it back to the way it was.  Unfortunately, I chose to merge the partition, and the target info was set as the new partition I had created.  So it messed up my boot sector and moved all my files to a folder within the "new drive."  I have since moved all the files back to the root, but of course, it still doesn't work.
I have tried loading a windows 8 recovery disk, but it stops halfway through loading.  Interestingly enough, it will load all the way if I have the hard drive out, but that doesn't do me any good.
I have tried running a repair with a Windows 8 Install disk, but it cannot find the OS.
I have tried to set the recovery partition to active, but it will not allow me to because it is not an MBR.
I currently get the Recovery screen.  A required device isn't connected or can't be accessed.  Error Code: 0xc0000225
I could format and reinstall Windows 8, but I want to use the license that was preinstalled (no discs came with the laptop) instead of the license with this disc.  I would not mind ordering a recovery CD from HP, but I am not sure if it will work, considering the state my partitions are in.  This is a brand new Laptop, so I don't mind starting over from scratch, there are no personal files, just a few apps that are easily replaced.
Can anyone help me before I go completely nuts?

It appears that resizing the partition has interfered with how the notebook was configured to boot.
To get around this, the HDD will need to be restored using the recovery disks themselves. You can use the recovery disks you made if you made them before the issue occurred. If not, they will need to be ordered from HP. The number for the U.S. and Canada is 1-800-474-6836. The recovery disks will work regardless of the partition configuration as long as the hard drive was not converted to a dynamic disk. If it has been converted to a dynamic disk, then the drive will need to be revered back to a standard disk. I do not believe that is the case.
It may be best to start with wiping the hard drive free of any changes that have been made. This guide for KillDisk should help with the process. Page 10 lists how to get the free version to accomplish the task of wiping the hard drive.
Once the hard drive is wiped, it should be ready to be recovered using the recovery disks.
Let me know what happens.

• Have I messed up my partitions?

Hi,
Just wondering if any of you can shed some light on an issue that's bothering me. I think I might be missing an old partition from my HDD (a 512gb SSD).
I installed Windows 7 last week under bootcamp, giving it a measly 25gb. This proved to be a massive mistake and I'm certainly paying for it now. Realising the problems this caused I decided to try and extend the partition.
So in OSX I lowered the Mac partition and booted windows, where I used mini tool partition wizard to expand it to 80gb. This, did 'work' but somehow I ended up with less space. In Windows my bootcamp partition was indeed flagged as 80gb BUT it was all instantly used up by seemingly nothing, giving me a remaining 1gb. Something was amiss.
I decided to restart windows, thinking it may clear some temp files or something. As it was shutting down, Windows updates started and got stuck midway through. I hard booted the macbook.
This completely frazzled the 25gb/80gb partition and I was no longer able to boot into Windows. So using this tutorial:http://nerdr.com/tag/fix-bootcamp-partition-not-booting-mac-and-macbook-pro/ I managed to have Windows show up again and booted into it.
As I expected Windows needed repairing. So in the absence of a recovery drive I decided to just wipe the partition and start again.
Back in OSX- I went to Disk Utility just to check the partitions. There was an unidentified gap between OSX and Bootcamp- so I tried to expand OSX back into this space- it wouldn't work. The partition was unsuccessful each time. so I created another OSX partition in this space, which worked fine- no more gaps.
I then started up the bootcamp assistant again to try and remove Windows. The assistant got stuck on re-partitionng. So I went back to Disk Utility and noticed I could use the little minus symbol to remove both Bootcamp and the extra OSX  partitions- which I did. I then quit out of the useless bootcamp assistant.
Success! I was now back with no bootcamp, and a full 500gb OSX partition.
SO now I used the Bootcamp assistant again to create 100gb of space for installing windows. Which all went well.
Upon completion I booted into Windows- where the Bootcamp partition is showing as 92gb (8gb is acceptable to be missing in some mysterious windows filesystem) fine.
However, under Windows- my OSX partition (and 'macintosh HD' under My Computer) is showing as 372gb. Confused, I installed Partition Wizard again, which states that the total HD capacity is 465gb, and that OSX is indeed on a 372gb partition.
I rebooted into OSX. In OSX, everything worked out perfectly, my Mac partition is at the correct 400gb and the Bootcamp partition is at 99gb.
Strange then, that in Windows it shows up at 372gb- which possibly accounts for the 25gb parition I messed up when I first installed Windows?
Can you guys boot into Windows 7, if you have it, and tell me if your hard drive is missing 30+gb from the 'Macintosh HD' drive capacity. The partition you allowed OSX?
I'm mainly worried about using up 372gb in OSX and reaching an invisible limit.
Thanks, hope this one isn't too long winded.
Also, an interesting sidenote, the partitions are labelled with start and end LBA's as such:
1: 1 - 409639
2: 409640 - 782476111
3: 782476112 - 783745647
4: 783747072 - 977104895 (Bootcamp)
Note that the numbers follow on from each other, until we reach the end of 3 and start of 4- could this be my missing space?

As long as the hardware is the same you won't have a problem with Windows re-installation.
And as long as the drive is formatted before you re-install OSX there should be no repercussions.
Just make sure that you give Windows enough space this time    I for one have done the same thing as you - exactly the same thing (except that I bought Camptune X first and used that), and had to re-install everything.
It's a shame that the restriction on further post-Bootcamp partitioning isn't more prominently displayed. It's a tough lesson to learn (and seems so needless!).
But at least you get a sparkling new installation

• I messed up while installing Boot Camp and now I can't restore my drive to a single partition.

Hey all, I have a late 2013 iMac on 10.9.4. Just got it a few days ago and tried to install my copy of 8.1 on it.
After taking a while to create a bootable USB disk, I partitioned ~470GBs through Boot Camp Assistant to use as a Windows partition. Long story short, during my install, I ran into some problems while choosing the drive to install Windows onto. Now I remember when installing Windows 7 on my MBP, deleting the partition and reformatting did the trick, so I tried that. Windows gave me a prompt saying it will create new partitions for system files. I didn't think much of it, so I said sure. After all that, still ran into some problems.
Was about to give up to I rebooted into OSX to restore my drive, but was met with this error:
I checked my disk utility and I had 2 extra partitions--disk 1s4 and 1s5 or something similar. Managed to get rid of one, but the other one was impossible to get rid of, despite my efforts. Now I have my main partition, a disk1s4 partition I can't get rid off, and and 478.09GBs of free space that I can't get back at the moment.
So. I messed up. What are my options now?
Here's what it says in diskutil list:
Thanks guys, any help is appreciated.

I tried to restore the previous session as I've done so several times before, but I was not given the option. It simply did not show up on my browser history. I also tried to restore a previous version of the sessionstore file, but it did not do anything except erase my browser history from the restoration point. Also, after i restored the sessionstore file, the ability to see my "ghost" tabs that were open is now gone, so I assume it's lost forever. I deleted the sessionstore file before restoring it, and put it back into the folder, but that did not restore my history. What am I doing wrong?
