Party Shuffle changed behaviour?

There seems to be a change to Party Shuffle in the newest version of iTunes. When I set it to show 0 upcoming songs (I like to be surprised) it won't grab another song to play after the current song finishes playing, everything stops.
Is this an intended change? And if so, why bother allowing the option of showing 0 upcoming songs!!

Yes if it was set to zero if it ran out of user selected songs it would just play a random one. I (and the original posters) just want it to work the way it did before.
I delete songs because I didn't select them. iTunes randomly selects some songs if my selections get under 5, and if I select some new songs using 'add songs to party shuffle' the songs selected by iTunes get sandwiched between my 'priority songs' and the new songs. Deleting those tracks doesn't change the continous aspect (when set on 5 or more).
I know I'm not doing a great job of explaining how I like to listen to music. Siffice it to say I wish it would work like it used to. In the grand scheme of things it's a minor issue, but I'm bugged by the change.

  • Party Shuffle Not Refreshing/Changing after running Genius on 8.0.2

Ever since running a few Genius playlists, the Party Shuffle feature is stuck. I change playlists, hit refresh and it stays locked on the last Genius playlist. Very weird. I've restarted iTunes several times too.
    Anyone else?
    I'm running an old iMac G5 on 10.4.11 with iTunes 8.0.2 (20)

Another thing -- I just rebooted my computer and got the same thing: opened iTunes and I still have absolutely no control over the party shuffle. It's stuck on the last Genius list. Changing lists, refreshing does nothing.
Is my iTunes DB corrupted or is this a nice bug that they'll fix in 8.0.3 (please!).

  • Is it possible to change the Party Shuffle options

I've run into the problem that Party shuffle won't skip over songs that I am not authorized to play. I was just wondering is there a way to edit the options to it only plays songs I am authorized to play, or would I be better off just trying to create smart playlist that does that. either way if someone could post instructions on how to do either option that would be of much help.

If you have songs you are not authorized to plkay songs, why not delete them?

  • My Rating in Party Shuffle

In the Party Shuffle view, when the currently playing song is selected the My Rating stars are visible (white stars on dark background).
However, if you select another song, the stars for the currently playing song become practically invisible (dark stars on a darker background).
Whenever you have a dark background on a row, the stars should be light.

Thanks for the support . I decided to provide Apple with some feedback as well. This is what I sent them:
    Dear Apple,
It seems that right now it is impossible to change the default setting of having newly downloaded podcast episodes set to 'Skip when shuffling'. This causes them not to be played in party shuffle and be skipped in playlists when you have shuffling enabled.
One of the many exciting things about smart playlists is that you can use them to create your own radio station that is tuned to your likes and dislikes. I've used a combination of a dozen or so playlists to create a 'Radio Mix Playlist' that plays music I like as well as episodes from podcasts I follow like the BBC World News Service.
Because podcast episodes are automatically set to 'Skip when shuffling' when they're downloaded, I have to manually change this to make sure that my podcasts keep being added to my 'Radio Mix Playlist'. This is obviously counterproductive in a system of smart playlists that is designed to be completely automated.
I understand that the majority of iTunes' users does not want their podcasts to be mixed in their music playlists. However, I--and many others I'm sure--would really appreciate it if there would be a new option in the iTunes setting to change this default behaviour to 'Not Skip when shuffling'. This would make sure that people like me who like to combine the many useful features of iTunes including smart playlists, shuffling and podcasts, are not left in the dark.
    Sincerely,
    Tijl Kindt

  • Can my Party Shuffle problems be solved? Is anybody else experiencing this?

There are 3 glitches i have encountered using Party Shuffle (PS) in iTunes (v 7.0.2.16) that i don't know how to fix:
    1) When PS displays/sets the upcoming songs i'll be listening to, which are pulled from one of my smart playlists, a song will frequently show up twice in the shuffle queue. The higher the number of songs i have displayed "on deck", the more likely i am to see songs repeat, but i'll often have a song listed twice in just a 10 song shuffle queue, and sometimes thrice. Once the song is actually played though, it won't be put back into my PS queue anytime soon (because the smart playlist i have PS pull the songs from is set to only include songs i haven't listened to in the last month and have a playcount less than 10 or so (which by the way is an otherwise great way to sortof normalize the "randomness" of the iTunes' shuffle probabilities).) Nevertheless, it's not until the song actually plays and in turn updates the Last Played and Playcount fields for the song that it will take it out of the smartplaylist... but by then the song has already been queued multiple times in PS. (By the way, my Smart Shuffle playback option in iTunes preferences is set to the "least likely" extreme.) Anyway, it sounds like a lot of people are having issues with songs repeating too much and with iTunes' ghost preferences for some songs over others.
    2) I've also noticed that a number of people were having trouble getting PS to play songs continuously instead of one-at-a-time (i.e. having to press play again after each song ends to get the next queued one going). I heard this was taken care of with the latest update - v 7.0.2.16 (although i wish there actually were a way to toggle a continuous play option). Anyway, the recomened solution at the time seemed to be to set the PS option for displaying the number of recently played songs to something other than 0. So, i thought i would change mine to 0 to see if it actually would only play one-at-a-time. It did not. Instead, it started to do something even stranger. It now updates the Last Played and Playcount fields for the new song coming into the queue instead of the song that just finished playing. This isn't really the biggest deal to me, since i usually like to see what the last few songs played were, but it's a glitch nonetheless.
    3) The only other thing i've personally noticed, which isn't really the biggest deal either, is that sometimes when i tell iTunes to "clear album artwork" from a song... well, it doesn't do it. So i have the wrong album cover showing up in PS for songs that are playing. The only way it seems i can get rid of it is to replace it with some different image/cover... which can be a little annoying when you don't want to take the time to go trackdown the correct 200 x 200 pixel image for the album.
Well, i hope someone can help... especially with the first one. I'm guessing these issues can't be resolved until some future updates are released to deal with them. I hope you can prove me wrong though. I also hope Apple has some people listening in these forums for people talking about this stuff so they can fix these bugs... 'cause i don't know of anywhere someone can report an iTunes software bug/glitch.
    Cheers!

I am still on 6.0.5 so I can't really deal with your question, but just an observation.
You say the source for your party shuffle is a smart playlist. How many songs are there in the smart playlist? The fewer there are the more likely you are to get repeats in your party suffle list. Appologies if this is obvious.

  • Unauthorized songs stop play from Party Shuffle.

I have a mac laptop that is authorized for two iTunes store accounts, and a computer authorized for only one. I get audio files from a shared source, a linux machine with a pair of harddrives in RAID, but after importing all of the songs into iTunes, it will add those that are not authorized to play, and will put them into party shuffle, and every time it comes to one of them it will ask for authorization information, and will not go onto the next one untill I manually skip to the next song.
How do I set it to not add music that the computer is not authorized to play to party shuffle, since rarely can I see someone wanting to authorize a computer when it gets to a track in party shuffle, and the fact that it stops playing is annoying.

It works... i just tested it.
if you want to prove it to yourself, or check, just make a new playlist, add, say, three songs to it, then change party shuffle to use that folder, go back to playlist, uncheck one song, go back to party shuffle, hit refresh, and bask in my genious!

  • Multiple Party Shuffle playlists???

Is there a way to create multiple party shuffle playlists?? I would like to have a party shuffle for 3 or 4 different genres of music
If its not already possible, would anybody agree that this would be a good feature??

well, ive done that already.. But you see, Im setting up a internet radio station using automator to change playlists automaticly.. So I want a few different party shuffle playlists already set up so i can just trigger those at a sheduled time.
Maybe there is a way to switch the party shuffle input playlist within automator??

  • Party Shuffling a shared library

    Dear All,
Does anybody know if there is a way of party shuffling a shared library?
My music library lives downstairs in the living room, at my iMac, and is shared wirelessly with a windows laptop elsewhere in the house.
I don't generally listen by any method other than Party Shuffle - but I can't seem to do that on the itunes on the laptop.
I can play all the music in the shared library randomly by pressing the random button at the bottom left and double clicking on 'all artists', but this is really not as good as Party Shuffle (I like to sit down and prune the upcoming list depending on my mood / company).
If anybody can help I'd be much obliged.
    Cheers,
    Doug

It's been that way ever since Party Shuffle appeared in iTunes.
One way I used to do it when I had my music library on a desktop computer and I was using a PowerBook was to use remote desktop software like VNC to control the remote computer.
Or if you quit out of iTunes on the remote computer and use file sharing to mount the remote file system you could hold the Option key down on your local computer and then select the library on the shared volume. I haven't tried this but I think it may work. Changing libraries was something introduced in the latest version of iTunes, although I don't think this was what they had in mind when introduced it.

  • Excluding songs from Party Shuffle

I have a lot of classical and jazz on my iPod. I like to listen to that in isolation but not in shuffle. How do I exclude genres from the random selection used when party shuffle lists are created?

    Open iTunes.
    Select Library - Music.
NI View, next tot eh Search at the top right of iTunes, select List or Grouped with artwork, one of the first two button (not cover browser).
Go to menu View -> Show browser.
This will put three boxes at the top of the music library above the songs.
You can use these to select/narrow down the music.
If you want to change info for every song in that Genre (or aArtist or Album), select the Genre, then File -> Get Info.

  • What is the Party Shuffle on the Source List?

In the manual it says it is a place to create a 'live' mix of songs that you want to include. However, that sounds just like what the Smart Playlist or any other playlist you want to create can do.
    Does anyone know the difference?

The Party Shuffle lets you be a DJ (like at a party).
If someone at your "party" wants a certain song, go find it in the Library and drag it to the Party Shuffle.
In the Party Shuffle, you can change the order (click & drag) or delete upcoming songs.
No need to stop the music which is currently playing.

  • Party Shuffle will not operate

I deleted all the songs in Party Shuffle, and now, the feature will no longer operate. Right now, Party Shuffle lists only one song from one playlist, and when I choose other sources from the source selection list located below the track listing window in an effort to get Party Shuffle to accept other songs, it consistently informs me "The playlist '[chosen source]' does not contain any songs playable by Party Shuffle. Are you sure you want to choose this playlist?" I receive this message regardless of which source I choose, whether it be my music library or one of my playlists, including the playlist containing the one track now listed. Answering "Cancel" or "Okay" to that dialog box only affects whether or not the chosen source is listed as the selected source. ("Cancel" leaves the source listed as it is, while "Okay" changes the source listed to the selected source, though without affecting the listing of the tracks, er, track.)
Changing the number of recently displayed or upcoming songs does nothing, nor does clicking the Shuffle button in the bottom right corner below the track listing window. As suggested in a similar post, I have selected and deselected the Crossfade Playback option in Preferences > Playback, and I have also selected and deselected the Party Shuffle option in Preferences > General, both to no avail. I have also quit and restarted iTunes, but that had no affect. Any ideas or suggestions? Is it possible somehow to reset Party Shuffle? And if I ultimately do have to perform a re-install of iTunes 7.0.2 to solve this problem, how can I do so without losing or adversely affecting my library or playlists? Thanks for any assistance.

Never mind. I solved the problem when, just for the heck of it, I decided to select (by checkmark, not highlight) all of the tracks in my music library to see if that would make a difference. Yep, it made a big difference. In fact, it made all the difference. Apparently, tracks must be checked to be available for Party Shuffle, but you'd never know that from the "Creating a custom mix using Party Shuffle" entry in iTunes Help. There's no mention of that critical step at all. So that solves the mystery as to why I continued to receive that dialog box telling me that my source selection did not contain any songs playable by Party Shuffle. Yeah, no kidding: 'Cause I hadn't selected any tracks in the first place! Thanks a lot, whoever wrote that incomplete iTunes Help entry on how to use Party Shuffle. What a waste of time, frustration, and anxiety, all because of some poorly written documentation... sigh

  • Party Shuffle doesn't work as intended

    Hi,
my brother's iTunes does not work as intended. His Party Shuffle lists songs in order of artists and their albums = it does not shuffle! Pressing the 'Shuffle' button does not change the order at all. Changing the shuffle logic slider in preferences does not affect at all. Rebooting or repairing permissions does not work.
I have 2 iMacs with iTunes working great so I think I've tried everything. Is this a MacBook bug? Any suggestions?
    Thanks!

I would suggest taking the Shuffle back to where you bought it from, if it is within the time frame given for exchanges. If you bought it at the Apple Store online, schedule a repair for the iPod at http://depot.info.Apple.com then choose the iPod service.

  • Where's the party?  Party Shuffle shows nothing.  Zero.  Zip.  Nada.

Up until recently, Party Shuffle worked fine. All of a sudden, with nothing that I can see being changed (at least by me), my Music Library no longer shows in Party Shuffle. Changing the source of the music (i.e. Recently Purchased, 90's Music, etc.) doesn't do anything either. There's absolutely nothing in the playlist...
I've checked through my Preferrences ad nauseum and can't seem to locate the issue. I've even reinstalled the software and no dice. Thoughts?

    Hi Jamaikas,
I'm sure no one is intentionally ignoring your question.
Seaching for "party shuffle" in the forum comes up with a TON of hits. Here is a post that might help you:

  • Itunes Party Shuffle not Shuffling

I recently moved my music from my PC to my laptop via the iTunes CD Backup. Since then, the iTunes party shuffle, which i use when I'm doing homework won't shuffle the songs, it instead just plays them in alphabetical order by title. how do i change this?

It seems it's even worse. At the bottom of the page, where it says select source, I picked a playlist that has my 5 star rated songs, yet the main list in the shuffle area stubbornly remains the same.
