Party Shuffle with Shared Music

I saw this question posted a few times (all of which are archived and do not allow posting of replies). Does anyone have any good info as to why Party Shuffle can't pull from a shared music library? The only real "workaround" is to play the library and select the "Shuffle" button, but you obviously don't have control over what songs get played next.
I would really like to see this available. Is it in the works or should I just not expect it at all.

Doesn't look like anyone else cares... Oh well...

  • Party Shuffle with shared library

Is there anyway to use Party Shuffle on a remote computer with a shared library as the source? I have all my music on my G5 but my laptop is what I use during parties.

It's been that way ever since Party Shuffle appeared in iTunes.
One way I used to do it when I had my music library on a desktop computer and I was using a PowerBook was to use remote desktop software like VNC to control the remote computer.
Or if you quit out of iTunes on the remote computer and use file sharing to mount the remote file system you could hold the Option key down on your local computer and then select the library on the shared volume. I haven't tried this but I think it may work. Changing libraries was something introduced in the latest version of iTunes, although I don't think this was what they had in mind when introduced it.

  • Party Shuffling a shared library

    Dear All,
Does anybody know if there is a way of party shuffling a shared library?
My music library lives downstairs in the living room, at my iMac, and is shared wirelessly with a windows laptop elsewhere in the house.
I don't generally listen by any method other than Party Shuffle - but I can't seem to do that on the itunes on the laptop.
I can play all the music in the shared library randomly by pressing the random button at the bottom left and double clicking on 'all artists', but this is really not as good as Party Shuffle (I like to sit down and prune the upcoming list depending on my mood / company).
If anybody can help I'd be much obliged.
    Cheers,
    Doug

  • Party Shuffle w/ Sharing

Sharing my music from my desktop to my laptop using Airtunes I find that I cannot choose a folder in Party Shuffle to access my shared music. Is this part of the copyright law problem? Is there a way around this? I would prefer Party Shuffle over the old fashioned Shuffle option. Any ideas?
    Thanks.

Count me in on this one. I logged in to check this and one other issue, both of which it appears are not yet available. Just to reiterate, I would like to see iTunes support:
    1) Party Shuffle capability for shared playlists
    2) Allow user to rate songs in shared playlists (permissions could be controlled on the serving library)
It looks like I'm in the same situation as at least several other people are - I want to store and manage just one main library (in the basement, in my case), while creating "shell" iTunes libraries on other household computers (or possibly media servers in the future) that access the shared library in the basement. Party Shuffle is fantastic; it seems that it wouldn't be too hard to update iTunes to serve random songs per Smart Playlist rules to a requesting client. After all, it's already serving songs as it is. Likewise, I've loaded my entire CD collection, but have only rated maybe half of my music to date. I like my basement, but it sure would be nice if I could rate songs while I stream them over my family room stereo (I have a special smart playlist that only feeds me unrated songs - only 1566 songs to go...).

  • Cover Flow with shared Music

    Hi,
is it possible to use Cover Flow with my shared music?

I have the exact same problem. I guess we're a minority enough that Apple doesn't care about those with large iPods and laptops (so no syncing).
The problem is that with iTunes 7, it was changed to accomdate CoverFlow. Previously, all album art added was automatically embedded into the file.
However, CoverFlow deals with loading lots of images, so iTunes 7 stores the album art in a folder - instead of embedding - in your iTunes directory as a "cache" so that it can easily and quickly retreive the images when you view CoverFlow (as opposed to having to reload every time).
You can't use CoverFlow for iPod music because iTunes doesn't have the image data stored somewhere consistent, and so would have to reload the album art everytime you reconnect your iPod and use CoverFlow, and then keep this image data stored on your computer even if that iPod is never again connected. This could be a strain on your resources, and so I guess Apple decided to play it simple and allow you to only use CoverFlow for music it knows that it has a cache for and that it knows still exists.
The best way around it is if you can store all your mp3s on an external drive, then when you add them to your library you'll be able to use CoverFlow.
Other then that, Apple's message seems to be "get a desktop" or "get a nano."

  • I want party shuffle with my ipod!!

Hi guys, sorry, I was looking for the right place to comment this but just find this place. So I hope you coul tell me where could I (and many more customers) make a request to add party shuffle on iTunes for the ipod.
I was reading around it is diffucult for I don't really care what reason but I am positive it is posible to add such a feature.
So, making right use of this place: why is that no iPod can be used with the party shuffle? can be added on future iTunes revsions? where can I suggest that option with real chances to be heared?
and, what do you think about this?

Hello and Welcome to Apple Discussions.
The best place to make suggestions about Apple products is here (link).
There is a Party Shuffle mode in iTunes 7 and a Shuffle mode on the iPod so I'm not sure what you'd actually be asking for.

  • ITunes party shuffle rejects entire music list

I recently marked everything in my "books and spoken" list as "skip when shuffling". I did this by selecting multiple tracks at a time. Now, my party shuffle has nothing in the list. I have verified that my music is not marked "skip when shuffling". I have tried turning shuffle on and off. I have tried dragging music to the party shuffle, and selecting different sources for the party shuffle. I get a message that states that the music in these sources are not abailable for shuffling.
    Now what?
Thanks, and I hope you get lots of points for answering.

Typical reasons for missing files are, you've deleted the files, they are on a disconnected external drive, or the drive has a changed drive letter, you've moved the folder where the files live in some other fashion, a third party app has rearranged the files, or iTunes has got confused about the layout they are supposed to be in.
Generally you need to work out what has happened, reverse the action and everything will be alright again. If it is something you can't/don't want to undo, e.g. a drive letter change, then as long as you can track down the current location of the folder containing the media then my script FindTracks should be able to reconnect it to iTunes.

  • Party Shuffle with "Display 0 Upcoming Songs" Bug?

I believe I have encountered a bug in iTunes 7, and would like to know if other poeple are having the same problem. If you select "Display 0 Upcoming Songs" in "Party Shuffle" mode, iTunes stops playing instead of choosing another song from the source playlist (after the current song finishes playing).
Previous versions of iTunes did not behave this way.
Can anyone confirm this, or is it a problem specific to my own Mac?
    Thanks.

Why? Drag it to the top of the Party shuffle list.
That's why it's called a party shuffle. You can
    add/delete/rearrange very easily.
    iTunes 6:
you suddenly get an urge to hear a specific song next
switch to iTunes, which is always kept in the Library view
    Find artist and song
    Drag to Party Shuffle
No need to leave the Library view, the song you wanted plays next, and then random tunes play after that's done.
    iTunes 7:
you suddenly get an urge to hear a specific song next
switch to iTunes, which is always kept in the Library view
    Find artist and song
    Drag to Party Shuffle
    Now click on Party Shuffle
Drag the song up 5 places
    Click back to the Library
3 extra steps requiring some accurate mousing. Or, ctrl-click the song, select Play Next in Party Shuffle, which is two extra steps. Like I said, not the end of the world, but very annoying.
And I believe it's a bug, since having it set to 5 songs or more, and the tunes will continue playing, but with 0 it stops. It's inconsistent.
If that was their intended behavior, then they should enable the "replay" icon in the bottom left to toggle how it behaves after reaching the end. As it is now, it's greyed out.
Of course, the perfect solution for me would be to have a shortcut key combo that automatically adds any selected tunes to the party shuffle, as if you had right-clicked and selected Play Next. I hate drag-dropping when I don't have to.

  • Upgrade problems with shared music and airport

I recently upgraded my itunes to v 6.0.3 and now I can no longer see shared music on my network (although people can see my music). I also can't see the option to connect to remote speakers through the airport. I have tried the obvious stuff (e.g. reinstalling, restarting, checking and unchecking shared music and airport preferences) but have had no luck. Any suggestions? This is beginning to drive me nuts...

  • Starting up Party Shuffle??

Is there any way to start up my Party Shuffle with automator?? I dont want to have to wake up to the same tune every morning .. Right now, i have it so a smart playlist starts up, cuz "party shuffle" doesnt even show up in the options for automator.

I was unable to figure out a way to subscribe or bookmark this without replying to it. So I'm replying to it, without really having anything to say.
Well, I guess I could add this. I live in a tiny town in Montana that has little in the way of real actual radio. I need to brush up these facts but, as far as I know the FCC allows for micropowered radio stations without all of the huge costs and red tape for normal radio stations. I plan to set up a radio station here using a Mac to play the music. I already have the transmitter and other gear bookmarked. I was wanting to do something quite similar as the original poster. This info is quite useful. Thanks!

  • Sharing Music: Some Songs Don't Show Up on 2nd Computer but Playlist Does

I am sharing songs using iTunes between my Powerbook and my G3 B&W. On the Powerbook, I see all of the Playlists that are on the G3 but if I open SOME (not all) Playlists, there are no songs inside. The songs ARE on the hard drive, however, in the iTunes folders. Any suggestions?
Info: The "missing" songs are all legitimate imports from purchased CDs.
More info: The G3 music is on an external hard drive.
More info: The G3 music was originally on the Powerbook, I copied it to the external drive and then I exported/imported the Library and Playlists onto the G3 to use the second machine as the music server. Did I mess up the import of the Playlists?
Even more info: the G3 is one version of iTunes older than the Powerbook (which is up to date).
    Thanks.

I'm having the exact same problem. My library on my G4 tower has 17 371 songs, but it only shows up on the PowerBook as 16 991. (Both machines are running iTunes 6.0.2 on Mac OS X 10.4.4.) I first noticed this problem months ago, and it's persisted through several new versions of iTunes, as well as several complete nuke-and-rebuilds of the iTunes library on my tower.

  • Trouble sharing Music and Photos on new Mac Book Pro

I am loving my new Mac Book Pro. Front Row seems quite promising, but I'm having problems with shared music and photos.
I have an airport network in my home and have most of my music and photos stored on my desktop (Dual G4). When I open iTunes on my new MBP the shared music works just fine. Similarly, iPhotos shows the shared photos from my desktop on my MBP.
But, when I try using Front Row, I get an error message saying that there is no shared content. I found a work around that seems to work most (but not all) of the time. If I open iTunes first, start playing a song (shared from the desktop) and then switch over to Front Row it shows that song as now playing and then the rest of the shared music is available.
I have used Software Update to download the latest version of all software on both computers and for my airport network.
Any help you can offer will be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    David

    Heya David,
If you haven't already please update to 10.4.8. If issue persists then try the following:
Remove the following files to the trash (do not empty until you test for function):
    ~/library/caches
    ~/library/preferences/com.apple.itunes.plist
    ~/library/prefernces/com.apple.iphoto.plist
    ~/library/preferences/com.apple.frontrow.plist
    - Repair your permissions - > http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=DiskUtility/10.5/en/duh17.html
    - Restart your computer again
    - Test and see how its working
    Hope that helps!

  • Using Shuffle for classical music

Am a new IPOD user and am looking for guidance on how to use "shuffle" with classical music .. specifically am looking for a way to have multiple tracks that make up one piece of music be treated as a "song" .. it would appear from what I have seen that shuffle will play a movement of a piece only (plays one track) .. Album is an option but would like a finer granularity if possible .. all suggestions appreciated

Thank you for resonding.  We were told at Best Buy all we would need is GarageBand.  So - I appreciate your honesty that this appears to be not what we need.
The situation is as follows.  My husband will teach in Aspen, CO this summer to Elderhostel people.  Back in the days of drop the needle this was easy.   But now - everything is digital.  And, so he has been downloading music to ITunes.  He wants to go to a section of a piece of music (say - within the 2nd movement and play where the "horns" come in.  And, then go to another section within the 2nd movement to show the change in tempo and "feeling".  And, be able to play that.  And, he can't take the time of "fast forwarding" and hoping he stops at the right place.   Once he has set these up - probably  40 to 50 start and stops for 6 lectures - then he would transfer everything over to IPAD.
We will purchase one -as we have wanted something small and portiable which has wifi.So we can access our emails and the WWW.
Does any of this make sense now?  Is there  MAC AP which would do what we are looking for.   This is what Best Buy kid said we/he could do.
I do appreciate your respondingto me.
    Thanks,
    Ann

  • Song Played Twice in Party Shuffle

I have a smart playlist set as the source in my Party Shuffle with a rule to only allows songs that haven't played in the last week. However, sometimes the same song appears in Party Shuffle twice, since it still hasn't played recently while it's only in the queue to play. However, after the first instance plays, the second instance is still queued, even though it no longer matches the rules in my smart playlist. How can I submit this to Apple as a bug report/wishlist item for the next update of iTunes?

What happens if you tell Party Shuffle to display 0 upcoming songs?

  • Load Shared Music on Shuffle?

I have 2 Macs running iTunes. I have purchased music from the Apple Store on both computers. When running iTunes, I can play the shared library on my second computer, but I can not drag any songs from the shared library to my iPod Shuffle. How can I get songs from both computers onto my shuffle?
    Kevin Hawkins

    hi Chris
I don't believe you can load shared music onto the iPod. You can only listen to it in iTunes.
that's quite true. same goes for burning from shared playlists. so if Kevin wants music from both computers on an ipod, he would have to use one of the "using ipod with multiple computers" techniques. unfortunately, that's not so easy with an ipod shuffle. (which is covered in the user tip.)
