  • Write protected flash drives

I have a macbook pro with OS Lion.  I have 3 usb flashdrives and all of them have suddenly become write protected. There is no switch on the stick.  I believe the problem started after I bootcamped my computer and began running windows 7.  I was trying to transfer files from the windows side to the mac side and now the flashdrive cannot be opened from either, or any other computer.  Any ideas to get it working again?  It's an 8g SanDisk cruzer facet flashdrive.

Some flash drives have a failure mode in which they are irreversibly write-locked by the internal controller when it detects a write error. If you can't erase the drive in Disk Utility on any computer, that's almost certainly what has happened.

  • Pass word protected pages

Does anyone know if Muse plans to introduse password protected pages for client previews, Thanks

We don't currently have anything related to this directly, but you can put staging sites on Business Catalyst which are not indexed.
If you wanted to do so, you can create a trial site on BC that uses a secure zone and put the page in that zone.  More information on secure zones can be found here: http://kb.worldsecuresystems.com/kb/add-secure-area-your-site.html?bc-partner
Keep in mind that you'll need to create a trial site on BC as the sites that Muse creates do not have the secure zone feature by default. You can go here to create a trial that supports secure zones.

I used a simple password for protect encryption and changes to the document I made and the program will not recognize my credentials using the password I chose.  is there a way to bypass this since I am the person who made the doc.?

Did you add a password that's required to open the document, or just to enforce restrictions?

One option is to convert the report to XML Publisher (which you might have already done as you are asking PDF/XLS), then look into the links below:

  • Password protecting a Flash Drive?

When I plug in my FlashDrive it opens up a Disk Image, I was wondering if it is at all possible to set up that Disk Image as a Password Protected disk image?
So when I insert the Flash Drive it will prompt me for a password and then open. I am starting up a small company and I would to keep all my confidential files on a Password Protected Flash Drive.
I know how to set up a password protected disk image using disk utility. But Disk Utility wont let me put a password on the disk image that automatically opens when inserting the flash drive, I have tried reformatting the flash drive, etc. but can't seem to get it to work.
The closest I've gotten is putting a .dmg file on the flash drive and then after opening the drive, open the .dmg file. Which would then prompt me for a password and open a new disk image. but I would like it a little less troublesome.
Please some one tell me if this is possible or not and How to do this?? Thanks

there are no built in tools to do that. the best you can do using built in tools is to make an encrypted disk image and put that on your flash drive. but you say you don't want that. the only other option would be a 3rd party full disk encryption tool like TrueCrypt or PGP. I'm not familiar with either so you'll have to investigate that yourself.

  • Pass words

Is there a way to bypass pass word protected comp's. I get old comp's from family and friends when they break down or are tired of them, some have had unknown pass words and I had to scrap the hard drive. I like to mess around with these old comps for fun and try to fix them when possible. This may not be possible ??? if not I'll just keep playing with what I can fix.          Thanks for any help.

  • Flash Drive won't Open after Yosemite upgrade

I recently updated my MacBook Pro 13' to OS X Yosemite. I went to pull some files off of my 16 GB SanDisk Flash Drive and I couldn't get my Mac to recognize it. I was able to open it before the upgrade. The flash drive does show up in Disk Utility, but that doesn't allow me to open it. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

I just had a scheduled call with apple support. I showed the representative via screen sharing the error message and the accompanying comments I receive each time when I try to open my Kingston DTVP password protected flash drive. His take on it was that the driver software of my flash drive is not compatible with Yosemite. In theory I have two options:
1 - Upgrade the driver software of my flash drive. I suspect there is only a slight chance that this is possible given that Yosemite is so new so Kingston probably doesn't have an update yet. (I will check with Kingston but their technical support is not open on weekends.) Unfortunately replacing my flash drive is not an option because my employer allows only 2 password protected models to be used on company computers.
2 - Downgrade to the previous operation system (I think it's called Mountain Lion) which I cannot do myself because I don't have TimeMachine on. If I want to do this, I most likely will have to pay for apple support.
I have a MacBook Air 13-inch, purchased in June 2013.

  • Is there a way to protect a USB flash drive from virus?

My daughter's school computer lab is seemingly infected with some PC virus but their school IT folks seem to be unable to clean them and with all the young kids using USB flash drives they brought these viruses home when they plug the flash drive into our home computer but luckily since we are using Mac at home and I have ClamXav installed it detected the virus immediately. So we are kind of safe but I am getting tired of removing this same virus every week using UNIX command in a terminal mode, as it's locked and can only removed using the sudo command (taught by some people). My questions are:
    1. Is there any way to protect a USB flash drive from virus infection (it's a window PC virus)
    2. is there a way or suggestion on how to stop these apart from dis-infecting the whole school computers? The problems are that these young kids are not aware of those viruses in their USB flash drives and their teachers are just too ignorant about it!
Thanks for any suggestions and help

I'd still invest in your case into Mac protection against passing along malware.
Take a look at Intego AV for one for the Mac and for dual-protection.
    http://www.intego.com
Whatever you are finding is 'dormant' I assume, but that doesn't mean it can't become active or passed along either. And there are some 'man in the middle' spyware and malware, some which target online home banking (some people run their home banking from a virtual OS that is used for that purpose only, I always wished Mac OS X could be run in a VM mode as well).
The IT folks sound like they need... do their jobs properly and better.
I don't care how young they are, or the staff's ignorance. Time for education is now.
Download and install Microsoft Security Essentials in Windows and follow guidelines. And there are tons of FAQs, guidelines and articles on the subject.

Nearly six months after Apple added a malware blocker to Mac OS X (Snow Leopard), the feature appears to be collecting cobwebs.
Apple has not added any anti-malware signature updates to the XProtect.plist file that launched with antidotes for OSX.RSPlug.A and OSX.Iservice, two known Trojan horse programs targeting Mac OS X users.

  • How do I "un-write protect" USB flash drives?

I recently purchased a new computer that has Windows 8.  One of my many flash/thumb drives is now suddenly marked "write-protected" when I did nothing to make it so.  I found a solution listed for Windows 7.  I applied it to my
own computer, however it did not change the said drive from write-protected to un-write protected.  I simply want to move files to another storage device and re-format the write-protected drive for new files.  How do I un-write-protect my flash/thumb
drive in the Windows 8 operating system?

I ran in to the same problem but none of the instructions here helped. doing some more searching i found a different article that supplied the answer for my issue. wanted to share in case other were still having issues.
If the problem is persistent with the drive and you still can't copy files to it or format it after:-
1- You tried removing read-only permission from the drive properties
2- You tried formatting from Windows
3- You tried formatting from CMD using DISKPART
4- You tried editing the Registry solution (for WriteProtect word)
5- You tried the different free online tools like
HDD LL Format tool and HP Format Tool
Then your drive is corrupt and needs the internal chipset S/W to be flashed, i.e. repairing the USB software The
steps below will lead you to get a small program to run on your USB memory-stick which is specific to your MANUFACTURER (make) and PRODUCT (model). If you don't want to go through the headache of the manufacturer's technical support then
do it yourself as follows (which I source from here):-
    1- Get Chip
Genius portable application from here which
you will use to find the VID and PID of the USB stick chip.
2- Search for the tool to repair your USB stick S/W from FlashBoot
website . Search using your VID and PID from the previous step.
3- Search on Google for the name of the application you find in the "UTILS" column in the page from step 2 and the first link on Google Results
(usually) will take you back to the FlashBoot website to download the utility to get your USB drive repaired.
It worked for me for my Kingston Data Traveler flash drive. It didn't work with all the common options for fixing the USB drive having "write protected",
but the above solution I found after hours and hours of searching online and asking my computer-geeks colleagues.
    Hope this helps!

How can I access files from a flash drive that were previously saved using a Windows computer? When I attempt to open the file on MacBook Pro, it is asking to "convert file to"; none of the options I choose work. I also have Microsoft Office (with Word) installed on the Mac as well.

Format the external drive as FAT32 or ExFAT. Both computers will then be able to read and write to it.
