Passing through from TV to iMovie

Hey all, I know there are a lot of threads about this topic, but I have kind of a different question. I have home movie DVD's that were burned from VHS onto DVD's. Some of the DVD's play fine on my home DVD player, but for whatever reason do not either play sound or video on my Mac DVD Player.
So I was wondering if I could run the DVD through my video camera and into iMovie? I tried to do it last night, but could not get it to work. I don't know if I have the right cables or if it can be done. FYI my TV has a built in DVD player, don't know if that makes a difference.
Thanks for any help...sorry if this is complicated!

Sounds like what you mention here may solve my problem. Can you or someone add more details regarding the tape-in and tape-out trick on the SONY camcorder?
I have the following setup: A Hi8 analog camcorder plays an old tape into a SONY PC120 miniDV camcorder via S-video cable with the pass-thru mode turned on. The analog video is visible on the PC120 and recordable on miniDV tapes. That verifies the connection between the camcorders is good. The miniDV is connected to the iMac via the firewire port. When I clicked the IMPORT button on iMovie HD, I was able to record the analog video in a iMovie clip. That verifies the connection to the iMac is also good.
My problem is that iMovie HD would stop the import after exactly 7.5 seconds each time.
It looks like that iMovie thinks the Camcorder is not in playback mode and cut off the import after a timeout of 7.5 seconds. The 7.5 seconds import DOES indeed pick up the video signal. Only if I could trick iMovie to believe the pass-thru signal is actually in playback mode, then it may continue the import.
What you mentioned here regarding removing the tape from the camcorder after the connection sounds like a trick to fool iMovie exactly for this problem I am having. Can you elaborate on the exact sequence of the power on, tape out etc.?
In iMovie HD I understand you need to have a tape in
the camera until the connection is made, after which
the tape can be removed. There is some concern that
this can produce excessive wear on the camera's
heads.
Someone with experience of using iMovie HD for this
may wish to confirm or modify my comment.

  • Does the iPad 2 pass through TV the same way that the iPhone 4s does ?

Does the iPad 2 pass through TV the same way that the iPhone 4s does ? I have an Arcam rCube dock which allows the tv pass through from the iPhone 4s and I was wondering if the iPad 2 will do the same if I buy a dock extender and what should I check for in a dock extender ?

No - that feature does not exist on the iPad2 and I know of no plans - nor would anyone else here - for that feature to be added with a software update in the future.

  • Passing parameters from report to form

    Hello,
I have a report based on a View with all the details of only one record. I whant to link this report with a form in insert mode, passing some of the fields as parameters.
Anyone konws how to do it?

    Jan,
Thanks for the succinct reply! I've been trying to 2 days to solve this problem. Whew!
<BLOCKQUOTE><font size="1" face="Verdana, Arial">quote:</font><HR>Originally posted by Jan Willem Vermeer ([email protected]):
Unfortunately linking reports and forms in insert mode is not completely tackled in the faq.
For a long time Oracle Customer Support and I were not able to get the form in insert-mode. My forms kept on appearing in query-mode, so when I passed values from the report to the form, the form queried records based on the parameters passed through from the report. While I wanted these parameters filled in as default values.
The solution is almost too easy to imagine. When you define the link-parameters in the report definition, you should leave the EQUAL-sign blank. On metalink you can read TAR 1258704.996 and bug 1696340 for more info.<HR></BLOCKQUOTE>

  • Are there any tools from NI can generate the pass-through layer (IVI class driver) for IVI class specific driver?

IVI class driver (layer) will provide interchangeable feature for a IVI class specific driver. It would work as a pass-through layer and finally make calls to the IVI class specific driver. Since there could be a lot of functions to be passed through. Are there any tools from NI (Labwindows/CVI or Labview) can do this ?
    Thanks a lot.
BTW: the IVI class specific driver interface is generated from Labwindows/CVI tools.

    Hi Chris,
Yes, I did.  To support interchangability, from my understanding of the IVI specs, there should be another layer IVI-C class driver on top of this IVI class specific driver. As in the IVI‑3.1: Driver Architecture Specification:
Although IVI‑C class drivers export inherent,
base, and extension capabilities, they do not actually implement them. Except
for a few inherent functions and attributes defined exclusively for class
drivers, class driver functions and attributes provide a pass‑through layer to
the IVI‑C specific driver. An IVI‑C specific driver is responsible for
implementing the operations of functions and attributes and for communicating
with the instrument. The IVI‑C specific instrument driver contains the
information for controlling the instrument, including the command strings,
parsing code, and valid ranges of each instrument setting"
So where is this IVI-C class driver and how is it created and communicate with my class specific driver?
    Thanks a lot.
    Cheers,

I have my Panasonic NV-GS11 hooked up to my eMac via Firewire.
I'd like to be able to play through from VHS recorder to record to my hard-drive but it doesn't seem to want to work for me.
I am using an S-Video lead as well, seperate from the audio leads.
I have followed the instructions to the tee in the manual.
The only joy I have had is by clicking the Import button in iMovie and it grabs about a 2 second shot from the VHS tape that is playing.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • Changing from "Pass Through" as Default in Blend Mode in a Group Folder Layer Set

    Hello Forum gurus!
Using a MacBook Pro, 10.5.4. Painting with CS2. My question is two-fold.
When the Group layer folder in a layer set is selected, it is displaying the "Pass Through" blend mode by default. Is there a special convenience to this? (Best use for pass through blend mode)
Also, How may I change the default in this mode to be "Normal" as the setting when creating a Group folder layer set?
    Thanks!!
    Colene

Matthias, now I understand. We're both right from different perspectives. If you want the adjustment layer (should there be one within the group) to affect all layers below the group (perhaps because that's the way the image looked before you made the group in the first place), then Pass Through is your blend mode. If you want that adjustment layer to affect only those layers within the group (which I often do), then Normal (or some other) is your blend mode.

  • Pass image from webdynpro app through context nodes

    Hi All,
Just wondering is there any way I can pass dynamically images from my WDA app to my interactive form through an XML interface?
I can upload my images into the MIME repository during design time, can I get the XSTRINGs of these, bind it to a context attribute then use the XML interface into the Interactive Form and have it bind that into an image field ?  (do I need to convert XSTRINGs into base64 encoded formats?)
Sorry I'm a bit confused, a lot of the blogs I've seen all use ABAP dictionary based interfaces, is this the only way you can pass graphics from WDA into an Adobe Form dynamically?
Also, what do we need to do to pass values from our WDA context into an ABAP dictionary interface form?
Edited by: Danny Yee on Oct 7, 2011 10:10 AM

    Hi Danny,
If you use file upload UI element in webdynpro, it will store the file in xstring format. Am not sure about images, but i think it will upload images also.
what do you mean by ABAP dictionary interface form? is it adobe form? if yes, then in your case quite simple.
first use upload ui element then read the xstring attribute value then try to bind  the same value to datasource property of adobe interactive form.

  • Can no longer import from VHS to iMovie HD via Sony TRV-340E

For the last few weeks I have been successfully importing alot of my old home videos into iMovie 4.01.
The set up is a typical AV pass-through arrangement:
    VHS (via component cables) to:
Sony TRV-340E (no tape inserted) (via 6-4 pin Firewire) to:
    iMac G5
Then yesterday I upgraded to iMovie HD and updated straight away to 5.02.
Now when I play the tape in the VHS, it will show up on my cameras LCD screen but not on the G5.
I know this is an iMovie problem because:
If I play the VHS, and then put a tape in to the camera, then click import in iMovie, I can see that iMovie grabs a split second of video from the VHS before starting to import from the DV tape.
I hope Apple can fix this soon because I have to return both the camera and iMac soon!

Yes, some analog to DV converters don't work in iMovie HD 5.0.2 like they do in iMovie 4.0.1.
I'm not holding my breath for a fix since this has been a known issue for eight months:

  • Analog to digital, how does one actually pass through a TRV120 or TRV950E ?

I would need some technical advice on how to connect a camera with pass-through feature in between a VCR and the computer.
I am trying to copy VHS-C cassettes to the Mac via a Digital8 Sony TRV-120. I use A/V pin connector from the VCR, Firewire to the Mac. I get the VCR image on the TRV's LCD, but nothing on the Mac. iMovie says the camcorder is empty, dot. If I put a tape inside, iMovie launches the tape and I get the image from the tape. I was pretty certain that the TRV-120 had the pass-through feature, having seen it mentioned on some reviews. Is there a special manipulation to do? Or do I need the sVHS cable? (would be weird).
Otherwise, I tried the TRV950E as a converter. The only way I could make the link work through is by recording the analogue signal onto the camcorder tape. I thought it would be easier, am I missing something?
Thanks in advance for your help!
    Paul

In my unnEUtered Sony TRV320E Analog to DV passthrough goes like this:
    1. Take the tape out of the camcorder
    2. Connect the analog device's audio and video to the camcorder's minijack, use the S-Video jack for video if the output device supports S-Video
    3. Put the camcorder into VTR-mode
    4. Select A/V->DV out: ON, in VTR mode's menu choices
    5. Disable the info display on the the camcorder by toggling its DISPLAY button
    6. Put iMovie (or other DV application) to the Camera Mode
The analog image should now appear on the camcorder's screen as well as on the iMovie's screen.
Note that if you have a tape in the camcorder, you have to put the camcorder's VTR into REC mode (you may pause the tape) but this is not advisable because it produces wear to the tape.
    * Note that the SCART which comes with the European nEUtered TRV320E camcorder is Out-only.
Notice that some analog to DV passthrough converters (like the TRV320E) don't work in iMovie HD 6.0.2 like they do in iMovie 4.0.1:

First of all I apologize if this has already been addressed. The following is what I am trying to do with my eMac computer lab at school. I am using iMovie 4 with Mac 10.2.8. I am trying to use pass through mode with iMovie and my Sony camcorder. I have the VCR going into the Sony and the Sony in VTR mode. The video shows up fine in the LCD screen of the Sony. I used a firewire cable to connect to the eMac and tried to import the video into iMovie. Nothing shows up in iMovie. Can someone please tell me what I am doing wrong? All help is greatly appreciated.

    hey there Shirley,
what model of Sony cam are you using? check the manual. try a different FW cable & w/ a different Mac. is the FW connection solid & tight? have you toggled the switch below the viewer from edit(scissors icon) to import(camera icon)? do you have control of the cam for play, stop, etc...? sorry for all the questions, but better to go through the simple & sometimes overlooked first.

  • DV pass through to record VHS

Is there anyway to use my DV camera's pass through mode to record direct from a VHS player into my Mac?
I have all the physical cables and equipment and used to be able to do this with ease using iMovie4 (the easiest way being to set my camera up with no tape in when in VCR mode and getting its input from my VHS player)
Now with iMovieHD, it does not allow for import when there is no tape in the camera.
The tedious way around is to record from VHS onto miniDV, then import from miniDV to iMovie. But why can it not be done like it could be with iMovie4? Are there any work-arounds or 'patches' that can be installed to fix this negative development?

Any idea whether this update (dated April 2005) did the trick in resolving the problem or not. Obviously I'll download it and try it out, but you may already know the answer?
