Passive chipset cooling on K8N Neo2 Platinum?
Hi,
I would like to hear from anyone with experience from replacing the active MSI HS on a MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum with a passive one, Zalman NB47J for example?
- Does the Zalman NB47J fit or is there another HS better suited?
- Are there problems with the VGA card since the AGP slot is so close?
- Heat problems. Would you recommend passive chipset cooling on K8N Neo2 Platinum?
I am not an overclocker but would like my system to be quiet.
Cheers

MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum
AMD64 Winchester 3000+
Thermalright XP-90
Powercolor 9800 PRO
Baskerville,
No problem mounting the Zalman NB47J
and no heatproblems for me so far ( with some good chassi airflow / ventilation )
The problem is the limited space between the cooler and the Graphic card.
I had to bend a couple of the zalman fins, to be able to mount my 6600GT card.
If not- the Grahpic card components hits the Zalman cooler.
It may work with some other passive cooler that´s lower then the zalman model.

Passive cooler for mobo chipset on MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum
One of my customers has this motherboard, which has a noisy motherboard chipset fan. I would prefer to replace it with a passive cooler if possible. Does anyone have any opinions on this and/or recommendations for compatible products I could go for?
Look here for suggestion:

NForce3 chipset temp on K8N Neo2 Platinum
Hello I recently installed a new cpu and gfx cooler (Scythe Ninja Plus & ATI Silencer 5)
I had plans to install ZM-NB47J to but it just was to little space between gfx cooler and nf3 chipset.
My new coolers dosent give any "fresh" air to nf3 chipset like the stock ones so my System temp is up to 41-43C from 36C
What are normal temp on nf3 chipset and how hot can it get before my system gets unstable and maby cause damage to my motherboard?Quote from: sleepy Samurai on 02-August-06, 03:06:20
My fan broke almost out of the box and with some talking I got a vantec cooler. It fits under those long video cards. The cooler is the same size as stock, cooper, larger fan, and heftier
It's always worth it to pick up a couple of those Vantec GPU coolers whenever you see 'em - they're the perfect replacement for the crap stock chipset fan - I put one on my Neo4 Plat as soon as I took the mobo out of it's box.
My Nf4 chipset stays at 32-35C no matter what. -

Now... don't LOL, but there is a reason I picked the 3200+ instead of the 3000+, but I can't remember why???
Probably because the 3000+ only has a 9x maximum multiplier, whereas the 3200+ will go to 10x.
2600MHz at 9x means a FSB of 289MHz and ram at 289MHz for best performance. Will your ram do 289MHz? Of course you *can* run your memory and fsb async, but I prefer not to.

is this cpu cooler zalman CNPS7000B-Cu compatible with the k8n neo2 platinum nf3 motherboard? i cant find it anywhere in zalmans compatability list, if it does fit the board, what does fitting it entail? can i install it like a normal hs/f or are there special fitting instructions, if so where can i find these instructions? already tried google
The Zalman cooler is heavy, but its fine as long as the nipples are tightly fastened and the screws that going into the nipples, that hold the cooler in place are tightly fastened..
Also use some artic silver 5 thermal compound and ensure you read the
http://www.arcticsilver.com/arctic_silver_instructions.htm
for instructions on fitting a AMD64 processor, arctic silver recommend a different technique for these types of processor , Im sure theres not much different in the end result, but I like to do things by the manufacturers book as they generall know best.

Cool and Quiet problem on K8N Neo2 Platinum v1.3 bios
Hello
I have a problem with the Cool and Quiet feature on the K8N Neo2 Platinum (v1.3 bios).
As soon and I boot the Core Center v1.7.0.0 will instantly overclock my A64 3500+ CPU to 3000+ Mhz. Of course this reboots my PC.
I have Cool and Quiet enabled in the bios, Automatic overclocking disabled in the bios and the Core Center softwares overclocking is (well it was) disabled? How can I install it or get it to stop overclocking the system.
I want to run the Core Center to enable the Cool and Quiet fan controlling stuff.
ThanksStrange that Corecenter would overclock your cpu to 3ghz. It's known to be unreliable software, but not that unreliable.
Are you running a stock 3500+, or are you overclocking the HTT/FSB beyond 200?
Previous posted was right about cool and quiet software. You don't need corecenter to run it. Just stay away from corecenter and even uninstall it
Cool and quiet software (a device driver that you download from AMD, or that comes pre-installed with XP SP2) simply works as follows. It introduces the notion of several p-states (processor states) that it switches between based on its reading of cpu load. A p-state is a pairing of cpu voltage and cpu multiplier. On my 3200+ newcastle, the p-states are:
1.5V, 11x
1.4V, 10x
1.3V, 9x
1.1V, 5x
Your 3500+ might be similar. Anyway, just run cpu-z instead of corecenter to watch your cpu speed changing on the fly.
As far as fan speeds go: the cool and quiet driver doesn't affect fan speeds. That means to get the "quiet" part of "cool and quiet" you need either
(a) a fan that has a temperature sensor and which automatically changes its speed based on that, or
(b) just use the motherboard BIOS setting to do the same via bios software.
(c) use speedfan to do the same via windows software.
I myself prefer (b) but it depends on the bios accurately reporting temperature, which can vary wildly between bios releases (e.g. newcastles didn't start getting accurate temp reports until bios 1.4). -
For some reason the small chipset fan on my MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum mobo has become a lot louder, I think it is running at higher RPMs that before. It starts up loud even if the computer is doing a cold boot from room temperature. Is there anyway to control this fan speed and quiet it down? and if I slow it down, will it hurt my motherboard? This fan is now louder than my graphics card fan, which makes it the loudest fan in my case even though it is the smallest.

Slow RX53, K8N Neo2 Platinum system
I put together my FX53 system last night. It is replacing a 1 year old P4 3.2 (Oc'd to 3.4) system. Basically I just replaced the CPU and MOBO and everything else is the same. Here are My specs.
Athlon FX53 939 pin
MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum
512 X2 Mushkin Level 2 DDR3500
EVGA GeForce 6800 GT (in the queue to upgrade to an Ultra)
SB Audigy ZS
2X Hitachi Deskstar 200GB RAID 0
PC Power and Cooling 510 watt PSU
CD burner DVD burner etc.
The installation and setup went perfectly. I have my RAM in slots 1&2 and it is reported as Dual Channel 200mhz. I did a fresh install of Windows XP sp2 and installed the latest (5.10) Nvidia chipset drivers and video drivers. My BIOS is basically set to "optimized defaults" (cool-n-quiet and the hardware devices I don't use are disabled). I just wanted to do some testing with untweaked settings to see just how much faster this system is than my old one. Much to my suprise it is slower, not a lot slower, but slower. I'm sure it should be faster. I lost about 6-8 FPS in Doom 3, and 3DMark 2003 lost about 800 points.
My Sandra scores are
Memory 5829
CPU 11067
Multimedia 22975/24465
3D Mark 03 is 11,421
CPU-1059
As far as I can tell my CPU/Memory benches look ok but not outstanding for my system. When you throw my Video card into the mix though my performance is less than expected. I'm stumped and disappointed. I feel like I payed almost $1000 for a downgrade.512 X2 Mushkin Level 2 DDR3500
I had the same ram and both my co and cg HATED it. I ended up replacing it with 2x512 pc4k crucial ballistix. My A64's love my ballistix. 245 1T 2.5/2/2/6 2.8v or 265 2T 3,3,3,8 2.8v.
I personaly do not use memtest for testing A64's. It been my experience that memtest will miss errors which are detected by Goldmemory.
Try setting 2,3,2,7 and bump vdram to 2.8-2.85-2.9v. The level two has winbond BH-5 chips and they crave voltage.
Below is Mushkin's take on the a64's mem controller.

Athlon64 3000+ and Higher
The Athlon64 itself uses a single memory channel and only one controller on the CPU. Because of this, the Athlon 64 (non-FX) can actually use plain vanilla, unbuffered, non-ECC modules. There are, however, still some peculiarities of the Athlon64 systems in how they are handling memory which effects memory compatibility.
One of the most critical issues in this resepect relates to the first step in the memory access sequence, that is, the opening of a memory page and subsequent steps until a read command can be issued. All of these steps fall into the time frame referred to as RAS-to-CAS delay or tRCD. In a typical system, the memory controller on the chipset is running at bus speed. On the Athlon64, it is running at CPU speed, which means that it is A LOT faster. That means that the internal sequence of commands also goes faster, and that's where all systems are getting hiccups if the memory chips used can only run at a high tRCD.
A very trivial explanation is that the controller expects that the memory is as fast as it itself but we don't have memory yet running at a 2 GHz and beyond clock rate. What it comes down to is that, depending on the BIOS tuning (by the manufacturer), the read command is issued a bit too early and violates the tRCD. The workaround is to add one additional cycle to the actual memory latency, that is, a 2:2:2-rated DIMM will run stable at 2:3:2; a 2:3:2 rated module will, most likely, need to be set to 2:4:2 in order to run stable (where the latencies are CAS:tRCD:tRP). Bottom line is that when shopping for memory for the Athlon64, it is highly advisable and in most cases mandatory to only consider memory with a tRCD of 2 or, to make it simple, memory that is rated at 2:2:2 a the designated speed. Alternatively, registered DIMMs can be used as well without problems, even though they are slightly more expensive and will give lower performance. -
Does anyone know what the safest max temp is for the NB? I'm running an HTPC and noise is a factor. Using Fan Speed at 100% (CPU & NB) and Prime95, my temps were CPU 45 - NB 34. At livingroom noise levels (fans at 40%) Temps were CPU 48 - NB 40.

The max temp is bout 70-75C.
I think that maybe okay for CPU but NB chip is probably lower (about 50c max). Mine goes to around 40c with OC of HTT to 1060mhz.
If you do not OC then you could consider a Zalman passive NB cooler (if you have decent airflow in your case) but beware that the chip is very close to the AGP slot and may block longer cards (eg. 6800GT). -
Hi all, just got myself a 64bit MSI K8N NEO2 Platinum board & a 3200+,am happy with it but a couple of days ago i got a blue screen with a long message that i didnt have time to read before the pc rebooted, after the reboot i checked the event viewer log file in administrative tools/control panel but couldnt narrow it down as my particular error code wasnt among the possible causes.
Among some of the possible causes were incorrectly installed USB drivers or the BIOS,i downloaded the latest BIOS update before this problem started(V1.40) which i am using now,i used the MSI live update software to flash it which i did in windows mode.Sorry for prattling on!well it did it again tonight and i managed to read a bit of the writing on the blue screen which mentioned flashing the bios to the latest version.I was wondering if anyone else is having the same problem and if so could you please advise me? If you remove the fan from yours, the size of the heatsink will not be big enough to cool your NB. As for temps, I've never seen my NB get hotter than 45'C. Note that the core on my NB should be slightly different than yours.
You could try to use the BIOS fan control for the NB. If set correctly, it should reduce some noise. -
Need help with k8n neo2 platinum
I've just installed a new k8n neo2 platinum s939 board with a venice core 3200+ cpu the htt is 2000 and multiplier 10x.
I've gone to the core cell menu and set the htt to 4x (seemed to be this at default) and the max mem clock at 166 (more about this in a moment), the fsb will go quite easily up to 250mhz even 255mhz, but when I try 260 Mhz the machine when it reboots shows the initial slash screen but then goes to a blank screen with the cursor flashing in the top left hand corner, I can't even get back into the bios setup without clearing the cmos.
The odd thing is that the adjust cpu vid is showing a voltage of 1.50 and not 1.40 or startup.
Anyway with the fsb at 250mhz the bios screen is showing the Current ddr clock at 208 mhz ( not the max memclock setting of 166) the memory in the motherboard ( a crucial 512meg ddr333 single stick) seems to perform OK according to memtest which shows no errors after 2 cycles.
Any attempt to get to 260mhz fsb appears to fail even by upping the cpu vid to 1.525v unless i adjust the cpu voltage setting which by default is set to (by cpu vid) to +3.3%. Doing this enables me to get to fsb 260mhz but the memtest fails ( even when I set the max memclock to 133, which shows my current ddr speed at 174mhz, well below the 208mhz which appeared stable with the fsb at 250mhz?)
So firstly why are there two cpu voltage settings in the bios when my manual only shows 1 (there is no mention of this cpu vid setting?
How is it that my memory is stable at 208mhz with a fsb of 255mhz but unstable at 174mhz with the fsb set at 260mhz?
Why does the memory clock lock not appear to be working, the memory should be fixed at 166mhz but infact increases with fsb?
I have bios revision 1.5.
Please help as I am not familiar with the bios settings for this nforce 3 chipset, they seem rather odd to me. I'm sure my venice core 3200+ cpu can get beyond 250mhz fsb, I have another pc with a venice core 3000+ cpu which runs quite happily at 270mhz fsb.
PS I've tried reducing the htt to 3x but the same thing happens.OK further feed back, I can get to over 260mhz fsb but the system is not stable the memory runs OK with mem test but I have problems with prime95.
I had to up the cpu core voltage to 1.53v to get to 260mhz using the cpu voltage setting in the bios and setting a 5% increase. increasing the cpu vid setting to 1.55v did not seem to do anything at all the core voltage was still at 1.43v.
I upped the mem voltage to 2.6v from 2.5 but still could not get the system to be stable, it may be that the memory is holding the system back but I don't want to pay for better memory at the moment. Unless anyone has got any other ideas it looks like I may be forced to settle with 250mhz, well still a 500mhz increase maybe not that bad. I've now to try 3d benchmarking using my radeon 9600xt and 3dmark 03. -

Nothing has ever been overclocked on this system.
Everything is plugged into a Belkin Surgemaster powerbar.
I haven't mentioned the power supply. I'll get to that. I have been using an ANTEC NEOPOWER 480W POWER SUPPLY (ATX12V DUAL 12V RAILS ACTIVE PFC W/ DETACHABLE OUTPUT CABLES) for about a year on this system without
any issues. One morning, I wake up, hit the power button on my coolermaster case, and nothing happens.
CPU fan won't even spin. Nothing happens.
O.k., blown power supply, I think . . . .
So I take out my Antec and put it in another system. That system turns on
without any problems.
Hmm . . .
I come here, and I read posts about
potential compatibility issues with Antec power supplies. But if it's a compatibility
issue why was my system working for about a year?
O.k., fine. I'll buy a Enermax 535W EG565P-VE FMA 24P (115/230 VAC) power supply.
I just plug it into the mainboard (nothing else). Hit the power button . . .
The CPU fan spins for half a second, and then nothing.
Did my motherboard just suddenly die for no reason?
Any suggestions?Pull the AC plug from PSU and set cmos in clear position with battery removed for atlest 20 minutes perhaps longer .
Then try to post the system barebone .
Just cpu,1 pcs memory in slot 1 , gfx card , and keyboard in PS2.
No usb devices at all including card reader and no pci cards harddisks or cdoms/dvd/floppy.
It could also be caused by a short or a malfunctioning fan connected to mobo.
Try to disconnect all case fans from mobo headers if you have any connected to additional fan holders.
The chipset fan can also be disconnected momentarily just to see if it posts.
If none of this helps , replace cmos battery and try again . -

the overclocking is done solely in bios.
Anyway, there seems to be different problems relating to waking up from sleep, I know that Cool'n'Quiet would stop working when I would wake up from sleep. I'll try overclocking mine a bit and I'll get back to you.
Also, check that the Save/Clear CMOS jumper is in the right position. -
Chipset voltage adjustment (K8n neo2 plat)
I posted this in overclocking, with no luck. Sorry to be repetitive . . .
Where in the BIOS do I adjust the chipset voltage? My ram happily does 290 at 2.5-4-3-10. I haven't yet tested how it handles higher timings. But, it seems to perform quite nicely.
What I want to do is 333X7.5 with 5:6 mem divider, just to see how the increased FSB goes. Anyone know if there are hard voltmods (you know with sawter, where you just set your warranty card on fire) for the chipset voltage?
