Passport cant read and write on two Macs

Hi guys
I have 2 Mac computers. One is a Mac pro With Mavricks operating sistem and the other is an old G5.
When I try to copy file to a Passport hard drive (that Im using on my Mac Pro) from the G5 it says it can READ ONLY.
Why cant it read and write?
Please help me with this .. Im going NUTs here.

Mac OS X version 10.4.4 transitioned for the older Apple Partition Map to the newer GUID partition table -- to support drives larger than 2.2TB and support a new Apple booting scheme for Intel Macs. The older Mac cannot read the newer Mac's partition map.
Save the stuff from the drive to another location, and re-Initialize on the older Mac (all files will be deleted when you do this), and the newer Mac will read it just fine (but will not be able to boot from it, which is no surprise).

ITunes Library on an Airport Disk? Read and write from multiple Macs?

OK, I've scoured the forums for an answer to this, but haven't found anything definitive. Apologies if I've missed the answer, but here's what I want to know:
I have an iMac as a primary computer, plus a Mac Mini hooked up to my entertainment system, and my girlfriend's powerbook in the house too. There seem to be two main iTunes options: either constantly try to keep all three iTunes libraries synchronised by running around importing files, etc.; or just keep one library, and share it over the network.
Right now, I am keeping my iTunes library on my iMac and sharing it with the Mac Mini and the powerbook. If anyone wants to add music (or other content) to the library, it has to be through the iMac. Obviously the iMac has to be on for any other computer to access the shared library.
I want to try to make things simpler by having a single "network" iTunes library that all computers to be able to share (read AND write). I envisage having this "iTunes Server" on an external HD connected to my Airport Extreme as an Airport Disk. If I move the entire contents of ~/music/iTunes (including artwork, library files, etc) to this central location, will the three Macs be able to deal with this, ie can multiple computers share an iTunes library database on an airdisk? Will I be able to stream content from this library to all three computers? Will I be able to import new music into the library from any one of the three computers?

I am having a very similar problem. I have all of my music saved on a large external disk connected to my airport. I would like to be able to just play what i want from this disk, but i don't like having to download every track i want to listen to. I still want to be able to bring my laptop with me and have some music so i don't want to make this external disk my library folder. Is there a way to play it on my computer similar to a shared library on another computer? Am i asking to much out of apple?

IMac G5 cant read and write DVD-R

Hi. I have iMac G5 1.9 with Superdrive MATSHITADVD-R UJ-846 with Firmware Revision: FA0G. Everything was OK, I was able to burn DVD-R and DVD+R too, but now Superdrive ejects all DVD-R disks. I cant burn it, I cant read it. DVD+R are working correctly.
System Profile is saying, that I can burn DVD-R and DVD+R:
D-Write: -R, -RW
DVD-Write: -R, -RW, +R, +RW, +R DL
but everythime I try it, the disk is ejected.
What is a problem? Can anybody help please.

Also, check your Mac OS Help Menu for troubleshooting tips. In the search field type dvd.
You can also open up the "Utilites Folder">Disk Utility.
At the bottom left of the window, click on the black ? mark inside the purplecircle.
The help window will open up.
Enter dvd in the search field.

HELP!: How to read and write to External hard drives? What file system to use?

hey all, this has been really frustrating for me today. i want to be able to write to an external HDD that's formatted in NTFS. today i find out it isn't possible to write to this file system on a Mac and that on FAT32 it is possible. however, FAT32 can't address files larger than 4GB so this hurts me a lot. are there any other file systems that'll allow me to read and write from a Mac? my goal was to use freeNAS to build a NAS with an old tower and connect my external hard drives to it, but if i can't write to them this may not be possible.

thats the problem, its in MSDos (Fat) or NTFS for Windows.
Options.....
1. offload all that data on the HD onto your PC, THEN format the HD in EXFAT for use on BOTH PC and Mac for read/write.....then reload all (or as you need) that data back onto the HD
2. get another HD, and format it for Mac OSX extended journaled.
FAT32 (File Allocation Table)
Read/Write FAT32 from both native Windows and native Mac OS X.
Maximum file size: 4GB.
Maximum volume size: 2TB
You can use this format if you share the drive between Mac OS X and Windows computers and have no files larger than 4GB.
NTFS (Windows NT File System)
Read/Write NTFS from native Windows.
Read only NTFS from native Mac OS X
To Read/Write/Format NTFS from Mac OS X, here are some alternatives:
For Mac OS X 10.4 or later (32 or 64-bit), install Paragon (approx $20) (Best Choice for Lion)
Native NTFS support can be enabled in Snow Leopard and Lion, but is not advisable, due to instability.
AirPort Extreme (802.11n) and Time Capsule do not support NTFS
Maximum file size: 16 TB
Maximum volume size: 256TB
You can use this format if you routinely share a drive with multiple Windows systems.

How can i format an external drive so as to read and write from both windows and mac side

i recently bought a macbook pro and used bootcamp so as to be able to run win7 and mac. I now wish to have an external drive so as to backup and tranfer files between the two os's. Specifically to read and write form either windows or mac. How can I do this?

Your drive is formatted with the NTFS file system. OS X can read but not write to the NTFS file system. There are third party drivers available that claim to add the ability to OS X to write to an NTFS partition. I have not tried them and don't know if they work.
The only file system that OS X and Windows can both write to natively is the FAT32 file system.

your drive is formatted NTFS. OS X can only read but not write to NTFS drives. you can reformat it FAT which is writable from both OS X and windows. (this will wipe the drive of course). However, FAT is an inferior format with a number of limitations. another option is to install macfuse and NTFS-3g on your mac

Reinstall MacFuse with the one from http://www.tuxera.com/mac/macfuse-core-10.5-2.1.9.dmg. If that doesn't work, you can use Paragon NTFS for Mac 9.0 which has been designed to work with Lion.

If all you're trying to do is move the files from the Windows external to the Mac external, you can simply connect them both to the Mac and drag the files from the Windows drive to the Mac drive. If you want to move the files back and forth between them, you'll need to establish the format of the Windows external. Macs can read and write to FAT32 and exFAT (which can handle files larger than 4GB) formatted drives but can only read NTFS formatted drives without additional software. Mac Mini Sever - Public Share - how enable read and write permissions for new remote files

Hi,
this Sunday a friend ask me to help hum with a problem on is Man Mini Server. He has a small office and uses the mini server to share a public folder to all his employees.
Everyone that creates a file, saves it to the public folder at the mini mac.
That problem is that, who creates the file owns it and remains with read-only permissions to everyone else. The owner has to change the file permission in order to the rest of the employees can work on it.
I do not know mac arquitecture, I only work with windows and linux, but i suspect the principles are the same.
We try to create another folder , and share it, but it happens the same. Have you any ideas on what is wrong?
I suspect it has anything to do with de file Sharing at the mini mac, but it has read and write permissions for everyone.

signed applet. You aren't going to find any easy way to distribute that policy file to users, and that policy file, if you asked me to put it on my PC, I'd tell you to take a flying leap. That would open any applet to access.
