Password for encrypted backup on Time Capsule never asked

Hello,
My system is Mac OS 10.8.3 on a MacBook Pro.
I do encrypted backups with Time Machine on a Time Capsule.
I wonder why I am never asked the password I chose when encrypting for the first time, especially when I do "Enter Time Machine".
As a comparison, I also have external disks formatted as "Mac OS Extended (Journaled, Encrypted)".
When I connect such an external disk to my laptop, before it is mounted I am asked the password I chose when formatting, which sounds good.
Thanks

When you originally set up the Time Capsule, you were asked to establish a Time Capsule or Base Station "device" password, which is stored in KeyChain Access on your Mac.
Rather than have to enter the Time Capsule Base Station device password each time that you access the device, KeyChain Access on your Mac remembers the password and enters it for you when your Mac connects to the Time Capsule.
If you do not want KeyChain Access to remember your password, and you do want to be asked to enter the password each time that you connect to the Time Capsule disk, then change the password using AirPort Utility and remove the check mark next to "Remember this password in my keychain" in AirPort Utility. Then, click Update to save the new settings.
It is much easier to let KeyChain Access remember your password on your Mac, but you can do it all manually if you wish.  Remember that other users will not be able to access the Time Capsule disk unless you have given the device password to them.

I need help to change the type of encryption for my iPhone and iPad backups in itunes. I have tried all the passwords I ve used in years and have no clue. Somewhere in Support I found an instruction that did not lead to clearing the password. It did send me to backup to iCloud and do a restoere from there. But this is not what I am trying to acheive. I already was backing up to iCloud. If I need to do a restore from a backup in iTunes on my PC I cannot do it because I cannot provide a correct passowrd for the encrypted backup.
Can anyone help me with a solution?

If the user cannot remember the password for the backup, the backup is useless.  There is no way to reset or remove the password requirement.
If the user did not enable backup encryption, the backup is corrupt.
In other words, the backup is no good without the password, delete it and move on with life.

  • I used an external hard drive for my backups via Time Capsule.  I bought a new computer and I want to transfer all my old fonts over to the new one but when I go into the Font Library from the hard drive backup but my downloaded fonts aren't there?

I used an external hard drive to back up my computer using Time Capsule before I bought a new one.  I am slowly transferring information fromt he backup to my new computer and I want to transfer over my old font book.  When I go into the Font folder on the hard drive the only fonts that show up are the ones that came stock with the computer not any of the ones I have downloaded over time.  Could they be downloaded somewhere else?

The answer to that would probably be "Yes." If you don't remember where your fonts were stored, you may want to search your backups for any of the font files you know the names to. See where that takes you.
Ideally, Font Book and other font managers will temporarily store the fonts you "installed" into the System when you run the OS. When you shut down, etc. they are removed and reloaded on restart. The permanent place fonts reside is where you saved them when or after you downloaded them. I typically create a Resources folder on the root level of the computer and place a Fonts folder there. Then I install fonts from there, and they are available to all users on that iMac.
Perhaps if you did not have that kind of a strategy, perhaps many of them are still in your Downloads folder?

  • I need a password for the backup copy

I need a password for the backup copy

A time machine backup that was encrypted cannot be opened without the password.. there is no backdoor.. if you lost the password the backup is useless.
If you mean something else.. try being explicit as to what backup you need a password for and how you think we would know it.

  • I NEVER entered a password for the backup but now I want to restore my iphone and itunes asks for one. What can I do?

I NEVER entered a password for the backup but now I want to restore my iphone and itunes asks for one. What can I do?

@Razmee209 is right there is nothing you can do if it is an encrypted back up
iOS: Troubleshooting encrypted backups - Apple Support
BUT you could try to see if you have a back up that is not encrypted. If you go to iTunes Preferences (On a Windows go to Edit Menu under the Play Button - On a Mac click on iTunes at the top left) Click on Devices and if you see a back up that does not have a lock next to it you will be able to restore from that back up without using that password.
Encrypted passwords are set up at the time you create the back up.

  • I have used Airport Time Capsule with my iMac for several years. I recently purchased a MacBook Air and when it tried to backup to Time Capsule it couldn't because Time Capsule is full. How can I now use the 3TB Airport Time Capsule to back up both?

I have used Airport Time Capsule with my iMac for a couple years. I recently purchased a MacBook Air and when it tried to backup to Time Capsule it couldn't because Time Capsule is full. How can I now use the 3TB Airport Time Capsule to back up both the iMac and MacBook Air? I don't mind losing earlier backups. I have excluded some items from backing up, but since the Airport Time Capsule is full, I can't even begin to back up the MacBook Air.

    On your Mac.......
Open Finder > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
Click on the Time Capsule icon, then click Edit in the smaller window that appears
Click on the Disks tab at the top of the window
    Click Erase Disk
On the next window that appears, select the Quick Erase option, then click Erase
The operation will only take a few minutes.
Now you are ready to start new backups of both Macs.  Back up one Mac first, then back up the other.  Do not try to back up both Macs as the same time.

  • How do I know what the wifi password is for my 4th Gen time capsule

I am only new to this time capsule thing… I am pretty savvy in things as technology goes but I just can't figure out how to get the wifi password on the 4TH GEN time capsule I have tried everything I know I was not the one to set it up and my mother let the tech do it and paid no attention to the finer details I would have. PLEASE HELP!!! THANK YOU.

    You will learn grasshopper!!
looked like I didn't even need the reset but this is great and simple way I hope other people use it!!!! Thank you again!!!! From a not as seasoned techy as you!!! I aspire to be as versed someday!!!
You must use the reset to remove the admin password if it is set.. If the tech left it as default the TC throws up an error.
It is one I choose to ignore since security on the Airport routers is pathetic anyway.
    Default password is public btw.
And as long as you access via ethernet then you do not need the wireless password. But the way the utility works now is to set the password the same for both wireless and admin access. So you need to reset.
Pressing the button for 1sec is called a soft reset.
Read the apple documentation on reset. There are 3 levels of reset..

  • Encrypt data on Time Capsule

I know you can encrypt data on the hard disk of the Mac with FileVault but how can the data be backuped encrypted on the Time Capsule, too? Will the data be encrypted automatically if they are on the hard disk they come from?

That's a great question. This concern is the reason I held back buying one.
While it's great to back-up data, how does one encrypt the content of the TC? One reason to want this is if the TC is stolen for instance. The data on there should be encrypted.
Glad to read it's as simple as turning on File Vault (which I did on my laptops) in Mac OS X.
However I am reading on another thread that Time Machine won't let you back-up the encrypted user folder:
+Time Machine backs up home folders protected by FileVault only when logged out. You cannot browse items of the protected home folder in the Time Machine backup. Because you cannot browse the items in the Time Machine backup, you cannot restore individual items.+
    So what's one to do?

Purchased a new Macbook Pro 13". I used migration assistant to transfer. I can't backup to time capsule.  I am getting on error "The backup disk image “/Volumes/Herb's Time Capsul/Herb MacBook Pro.sparsebundle” could not be created (error 17).  Help!

Launch the Keychain Access application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Keychain Access in the page that opens.
Select the System keychain in the list of keychains in the sidebar of the window. If you don't see the list, click the down-arrow icon below the sidebar.
Then select Passwords in the Category list at lower left. Click the Kind heading in the list of keychain items to arrange it by Kind.
Locate the AirPort Disk Password with the name of your Time Capsule. Double-click the item and check the box marked Show Password in the inspector window that opens. You'll be prompted for the administrator login password. Make a note of the AirPort password, then close the inspector window and delete the item.
Also delete any other AirPort DIsk Password items for that same Time Capsule, which may have had a different name in the past.
Quit Keychain Access and try again to back up.

  • Why Migration or Restore Utility doesn't find any Time Machine backups from Time Capsule ?

    Hello,
After a big issue on my system (Lion), I had to do a full restore from Time Capsule and my problems started.
    Here is my setup:
Time Capsule configured with account-based authentication
MacBook with OS X Lion (x2) (1 needs a restore)
I booted from Lion's restoration partitions, then I selected "Restore from Time Machine backup", my Time Capsule is detected. I hit "Continue", the utility asks my login/password. Then...nothing ! It seems that no backup is detected.
Well, from another computer, I tried to connect with the same login/password and mount the sparsebundle backup...no problems
To go further, I launched Migration utility from the working computer, then tried to restore from Time Machine backups....no backup is detected again !
    Solution:
I had, from Lion's restoration partition, to mount the Time Capsule drive, then the sparsebundle image (the backup) from Terminal.
After that, the restoration utility was able to detect the "local" mounted sparsebundle backup image.
    Aftermath:
Not a single Apple utility, designed to restore my computer, was able to detect my Time Capsule's backups.
I was able to use the command line utility to be able to restore my computer.
    Question:
Did I miss something ? Am I the only one to do that to restore from a Time Capsule configured with account authentication ?

I'm sorry I didn't get your point. I didn't find any answer in this FAQ.
For the record, I checked my backups with Disk Utility, no damages were found, so it should work out of the box.

  • Time machine back up on time capsule never stop

time machine back up on time capsule never stop.

You need to do a bit of troubleshooting.. and it isn't an easy one to solve.
TM could be stuck on a corrupted file..
It could be slow due to network issues.. wireless is terrible.. use ethernet if at all possible.
    Is there an error message??
    Look at Pondini.. http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
You need to load the widget A1.
Verify both the source and backup sparsebundle. A5
Look at some of the reasons he gives for over long backups.
    Look at section D.
I would also need to have more info. Did this just start when you upgraded the TC firmware that was recently released.. if so expect issues.
Are you running Mountain Lion.. expect issues??
To help further we need more info.

  • Time Machine backup on Time Capsule - lost

    Hi,
I changed the password on my 1 TB Time Capsule, as well as the WPA personal password. I then realized later on that Time Machine no longer connected to the MacBook Pro backup on my TC. I saw a support article about changing the password in Keychain Access so that TM would be able to access the backup on TC. I made the necessary changes (I think). I tried to set up TM to connect back to the already 2+ year old backup, but I am not able to. What can be done?
    Thanks

Did anything on your Mac change recently, such as the main logic board or disk drive?  In either of these cases Time Machine will want to start backups over again.
If Time Machine didn't offer to let you use the old backup set, I'm not sure there's much you can do.  It's possible there's help in either of these, but I'm not optimistic:

I have a new Macbook pro and can't recall the password I used with my Time capsule - How can I (ideally) retrieve or possibly change the time capsule password?

Remember security on a TC is an illusion.
Simply press the reset button for 1-2 sec.. you must not do too long .. it will then hard reset.. but soft reset will revert all passwords to default for 5min. ie TC password is now public.
Remember this the next time because anybody at all can change your passwords.
Once into the TC you can then open the view passwords if you wanted any weaker security. Click and open the TC.. and click on edit.. then go to the top menu..
Voila .. all your passwords in plain sight to any Tom Dick and Fred.

I am gettin gbackup through RMAN, how can i set password for each backup? I want to protect my backup so that no one other could use it if he copies the backup files.

Just use "SET ENCRYPTION ON IDENTIFIED BY password ONLY" command in your RMAN scripts. Look at the advanced backup manual for details: http://download-east.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/backup.102/b14191/rcmbackp006.htm#sthref632
