Password for network drive (default?)
When I added a network drive (Ethernet) to my system, my Mac asks for a 'registered user' password. Since I haven't set up a password how do I get access? I have the option of logging in as a guest but does this limit what I can do?
If this is a third party (non Apple) drive, you may want to check the manual or online for a default username/password on the manufacturer website. Typically, it may administrator and no password.
If this is a used drive, the previous owner may have it.
What make/brand is the drive?
If it has a USB/TB/FW connection rather than Ethernet, try that as well and see if DU will see and allow a re-format?

Keeps asking for Select a certificate or enter a name and password for network
everytime i start my mac it asks for "Select a certificate or enter a name and password for network" and when i'll close it and reopen it, it still asks.
can somebody help with what am i suppose to do?If you are currently showing WiFi status in the menu bar, you would see this icon:
If you see that near the top right corner, click it and choose "Join other network" from the drop down list.
If you do not see that icon, then go to System Preferences (under the Apple logo in the menu bar), ciick "Network", then choose "WiFi" and choose something (probably "Assist me" at the bottom) there. -
How can i change a password for network users?
Good day. I have a problem with changing passwords on server Yosemite. As i understand there is no way to change password for the network users remotely. I mean, when for example someone will change his password and then will forgot it how can i change it? When i open a server manage program and go to the "Users" and than open a setting for the user - "Change Password..." is not clickable.
Hi Dcp24,
If you are having issues resetting a user's account password on your server, you may find the information in the following article helpful (article is aimed at Mavericks, but the steps should be similar in Yosemite):

Getting the username and Password for networking
I have a MAC and several PCs at home, and I can see the MAC on the Windows 7 Network. When I try and double click it, it asks for a username and password. Where would I find that on the MAC, or how would I set this up. I want the PC to be able to access all files.
Thanks!
Chazyou can maybe try the format of -
username: computername\username
password: yourpassword -
Setup password for existing network.
About a month ago I finally decided to go wireless in the house and bought a cheap router at fry's. During setup I was asked if I wanted to setup a password, I answered no. I figured if someone needed it, let them have access, right? Well apparently someone is super savvy and jerky because now I myself am having a hard time going online once in a while. This is because they setup passwords for themselves, I'm assuming. Bad!! Well, what has worked is turning off the router for about an hour and then turning it back on again. This is the way I have had to regain my internet access about three times now. So sad!
Well I now want to put a password for myself. I have not been able to figure it out though. I have put in the intall disk but that didn't work because it (duh) wants me to install the whole thing. So is my only option to unistall everything and then intall the network again (saying YES this time to the little password question) or is there an easier way?
Thank you!!There are two passwords for networking that you should be aware of.
1. The password for configuring the router.
2. The password for allowing users to connect to the wireless network.
I think you left the first one empty, so someone connected, to your router and modified some configurations. If you can not log onto your router by typing it's ip into a web browser you should look for some reset button or hole in order to reset the thing. Then log in and set a configuration password.
By not setting a password for users to join the network, you leave it open for anyone to connect. Which some people choose to do, but you should at least have control over the router so that people cannot make any changes to the thing. -
ITunes library on network drive problems
Library source folder (on my network drive) defaults to the original folder locaton on my iBook after an, as of yet, undetermined time. How do I define the library source folder for iTunes on my network drive and force it to keep that location?
Thanks. On startup, iTunes checks the presence of the 'iTunes Music' folder as set in Preferences>Advanced>General.
If it doesn't find it, it will reset that location.
There is no way of forcing iTunes to keep the location.
iTunes must have a folder to store the next imports. That's the reason why it resets the location if it can't find the designated 'itunes Music' folder.
Always be sure your network drive is available before running iTunes.
Hope this helps.

Network Drive Permission Problem on Single Computer
I am setting up a user on a new computer. On our computers we have four mapped drives. One of these is a personal drive which only he has access to. He can open three of the four mapped drives without a problem, but he cannot open the personal mapped drive.
It says he does not have permission. What makes this weird though is he has no problem accessing the drive from any other computer. It is singularly a problem on this one computer only.
The One XI was able to figure out the problem. I was unaware there is a "Work Offline" button for network drives (I'm a developer not a network guy). Apparently the previous user had pressed that button, and it has an affect on the whole computer no matter
what user you logged in as. When you click on the drive to access it the warning doesn't say anything about working offline or give any hint to it being a problem. Kind of a poorly implemented feature by Microsoft I would think.
Thanks for the help Acreed, going through your suggestions did help me to discover the problem as the "Offline Files" tab only appears when logged in as Administrator and navigating to the drive in Explorer. It really angers me that Microsoft made
something so simply so difficult to know what the issue is.

Lost Administrator Password for Securedrive (SafeGuard PrivateDisk)
Hi,
I can't remember my administrator password and therefore cannot "mount" the SafeGuard PrivateDisk encrypted disk.
Is there anyway to reset an admin password for this drive?
If not can I just remove this software?Hi Richard,
-
i just had a new hard drive installed. After loading everything back on my computer from external drive, i came to the "select wireless network screen. I've misplaced the WEP password for my internet. Is there anyway to find it on another computer?
Maybe. What kind of other computer are you talking about? What operating system is it running? What kind of wireless router are you using?
Your best bet may be to just reset the router and set it up again.
Just so you know, WEP is a very old security system for wireless and is considered insecure. If you have it available, use WPA2. -
Network drive volume name for same folder by multiple users
I am using a 1TB USB hard disk attached to a ASUS RT-AC68U wireless router as network drive. There are multiple user accounts created on the same MacBook Air and they need to access the same folders on the network drive. For example, we have folder called "iTunes" created on the network drive.
The following steps resulted in some problems encountered.
Step 1: When user1 mounts the iTunes folder as a network drive, the general info shows:
General:
Kind: Volume
Server: smb://rt-ac68u/iTunes
Name & Extensions:
iTunes
Step 2: When user2 mounts the same iTunes folder as a network drive, the general info shows:
General:
Kind: Volume
Server: smb://rt-ac68u/iTunes
Name & Extensions:
iTunes-1
Question: Why does OS X assign "iTunes-1" as the name of the same network folder on the network drive for user2? Is there a way to retain the same original folder name for user1 and user2, such as "iTunes", so that it can be access as "/Volumes/iTunes" by both these users?tastyrico wrote:
Hi Drew,
Thanks for the recommendations. They are useful tips to have in the arsenal, thanks. However, the preferences discussed are intended for directly attached external hard disks and the specific discussion was to make it available to the network on a Mac that is powered up with no user logged in (like a OS X Server but user still need to log in).
That's correct, I'm sorry I am wrong.
I do remember another defaults write option for detaching network drives on 'switch to loginwindow' because I needed the same thing - eventually I gave up & disabled fast user switching, it reduced the amount of issues for the clients. Sorry for confusing the two.
Have you considered mounting it via a startup script. At the moment it is failing because the path exists when User2 mounts it. If you try a script (at the level of the system) it should mount only once. Obviously sticking usernames & passwords into a script is not the best for security.
I think this issue is what NFS mounts can overcome, but I haven't used them for so long. They should be able to mount with no user interaction, but they are less flexible with permissions IIRC.
If your NAS supports NFS look at that, I think you both need to remove the user as the agent that mounts the disk. If the OS does it once (& permissions are correct) it should remove the 'diskname-1' issue.
When it works you end up with volumes in /Network/diskname.
I don't have a good place to start with NFS, so take a look around here…

@ElisabethBraut, do you get this error form MS…

MS apps fall apart when you have disks mounted like this, it's a consequence of MS apps using an older way to represent filepaths. -
Password for Airport Wireless Network
I have a wireless connection with a third party router (dlink). I also have an AE that I use solely to run itunes through my stereo system. I DO NOT use the AE to connect to the internet. I'm not concerned about a password for the AE, but I want to protect my dlink wireless connection. I thought I set up a password by going to the web configuration utility and entering the ip address of my dlink, but when I click on my airport icon it automatically lets me on-line without asking me for a password. Am I making any sense??? Thanks for your help!
Your wireless network is created by D-Link although accessed through the Airport menu!
OK, try this. From your browser (Safari, or Firefox, etc.) connect to the configuration page on your wireless router, for example here's the instructions for one of the D-Link wireless Access points:
Step 1
Log into the web configuration of the DWL-2000AP by opening up a web browser and typing in the IP address of the Access Point (192.168.0.50).
Step 2
The default username is admin (all lower case) and the password is blank (nothing) [and you have already changed this passorf to something other than blank]. Click OK. Select the Home tab and click Wireless on the left hand side of the screen.
Step 3
Select enabled next to the WEP radio buttons. For WEP Encryption select 64 or 128-bit encryption. For the Key Type select HEX.
Step 4
Select Key 1. In the box, enter a HEX key (a random encryption key that you make up). The length of the encryption key will depend on what you selected under WEP Encryption. The Hex key must be exactly the same on all your wireless products.
64-bit encryption - 10 characters
128-bit encryption - 26 characters
The encryption key is HEX, meaning 0-9 and A-F are valid characters.
Step 5
Click on the Apply button then click on the Continue button to save your settings.
Mac clients may require a dollar sign ($) in fron of the hex key to work. Once you have set a password your wireless clients including your Mac laptop and your Airport Express will not be able to connect wirelessly without that password so it would be a wise idea to enter the password into the Airport Express configuration before making it active on your D-Link!
Here is a site with specific instructions for all the D-Link models since I don't know which one you have:
http://support.dlink.com/faq/view.asp?prod_id=1081
If you run into trouble the D-Link could be connected with ethernet or set back to factory defaults but that question is better answered by D-Link support folks! -

I'm deeply grateful for anyone who can provide me with an solution or suggestion. :)
Thanks so much,

Aiphos HooHi,
If you're in a domain, then as S Guna siad, you should guarantee appropriate permissions to users.
If you're not in a domain, then you can use "Password protected sharing", but this setting doesn't have effect on computers in a homegroup
Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Network and Sharing Center\Advanced sharing settings, All networks, turn on "Password protected sharing"
