Password lock only when lid is closed.

Hi,
I have a MacBook. I am trying to find a way so that the computer prompts me for a password only when i close the lid . Not everytime the monitor goes into screensaver or sleep mode. I have looked for a solution for this all over the web, and it just doesn't seem possible. I am surprised that is the case. Isn't it a little annoying that you have to log in everytime the computer screensaver comes on?
Especially when I am in battery mode, the laptop goes into sleep mode very quickly. I don't want to log in everytime i need to use the laptop.
Thanks

AAPL - can you explain what those settings are? As Haiyaa states, the Security preferences do not seem to be able to handle that situation.
In that preference pane, in the General Tab, the only pertinent option is "Require password [option menu] after sleep or screen saver begins." If you check that box, it requires a password when either waking from sleep or when the screen saver appears. Also, most annoyingly, if you have the setting for the monitor to sleep, which isn't the same things as either actual sleep or the screen saver, and it's getting annoying that I'm trying to save power and must type in my password, even though I'm also in a school setting and need a password protection for when I put it to sleep.
In any case, if the box is unchecked, then it doesn't require a password for either sleep OR for the screen saver (or for the monitor sleep).
So if you could shed light on what your settings are that allows you to only enter a password when waking from sleep, it would be much appreciated.

I'm reviving an old thread here to see if this is possible in Lion before I upgrade. Here is the original question from Haiiyaa as he stated it most succinctly:

Here are the two threads which covered it in 10.6. The answer was that this can't be done.

    Hi Matthew,
I'm sorry to say I have no answer, but I'm also searching a solution. Even though it seems to be poorly understood by most people, and appears relatively minor on the surface, I see it as a huge gaping security hole.
    Take for example the following:
During the evening, I'm at home, around, making dinner and occasionally using my computer. It's open, on my desk, and is secure by the sheer virtue of there being nobody with access to it at that time. It may be hours between uses, but I don't ever want to be bothered for my password.
But, the moment I step out of the flat, or at a coffee shop, or if my bag is stolen, or when only my roommates are home, I want that thing to be locked. And I want that lock to be really, really easy to engage, in which I think that closing the lid is the simplest, quickest, and most visibe at a glance. No menus, hotkeys, dialogues, delays, etc..
So in summary, we want the same behaviour, which was really freaking easy in 10.5.x, and has been unceremoniously yanked out from our favourite os.
    Booo!! Hisss!!

  • Macbook pro goes to sleep only when lid is closed

only than I can see the light flickering. when i change the energy saver option to let the mac sleep after 1 minute for instance, its not flickering and I hear the hdd still working.
    thanks

Frankly, I have run out of suggestions. Other than..........
If you have not already done so, disconnect all devices from the MBP.
    Try a PRAM zap.
Make sure the padlock is locked in Energy Settings.
IF no one else chimes in here, take the MBP to your local Apple Store or an AASP. Hopefully, you have Apple Care. Let them deal w/it.

  • How can i get my macbook pro too stay on and not sleep when lid is closed?

how can i get my macbook pro too stay on and not sleep when lid is closed?

If the machine is asleep, lid closed, and you plug in to an external monitor and an external USB keyboard, the machine will wake, anbd reconfigure the screen resolution for the external monitor, Once it has made this configuration change, you can open the lid and it will continue to address only the external monitor.  At least that's how my early MacBook Pro unibody 13" works. It seems to run a bit cooler this way. It gets quite toasty with the lid closed while doing anything demanding and you are more likely to hear the fan come on.  I have not seen any temps that would cause alarm, but I do get a high speed (6000 rpm), noisy fan sometimes with the lid closed, .
If you operate in the open-lid, external monitor only mode, if you deactivate the monitor for any reason, when it reactivates it will be running both screens, with all the navigation hassles this entails, so I generally set it not to deactivate the screen when in this mode.
Thus I agree with those who say that some of the cooling air is drawn in around the keyboard, the difference in cooling performance is observable.  If you activate istat pro, get the computer hot running in clamshell mode, and open the lid, you can watch the CPU temp drop by a few degrees C within a couple minutes.  It isn't a huge difference, but enough the lower the fan speeds.

  • Feature request Lock workstation (Win+L) when Lid is closed ~ power manager option

Under "Events" in Power Manager windows there are any options what should happen when you use this or that hotkey or when you close laptop lid.
But what it really misses is an option to just Lock the laptop - same pressing Win+L
Can you consider adding that option, when I close laptop lid to do just that?

I don't think that would ever be a feature of power manager since locking the screen is not a power management function, but check this out:
    http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?sitestyle=lenovo&lndocid=MIGR-77008
If your thinkpad has a camera you can configure it to lock automatically anytime there is no keyboard/mouse activity AND a face is not detected after xx seconds (including when screen is closed).  It works great and I use it on my T500.
I realize this isn't exactly what you are looking for, but I offer it as a way to lock your screen if you can't remember to press Win+L before closing lid.

  • MacBook Pro (mid 2012) turns on when lid is closed and MagSafe gets attached or detached.

I own a mid-2012 Macbook Pro with the 15" high resolution screen add-on (it's the model that was released alongside the new retina versions). The processor is a 2.6 GHz Intel Core i7. I run OS X 10.8.4.
I'd like to know if the following behavior is normal: when the computer is sleeping with the lid closed, and the MagSafe adaptor is either attached or detached, removing it or attaching it (with the lid still closed) will make the computer wake up from sleep. You can easily hear the fans starting when it does so. It'll stay on for 30 seconds to a minute, and then go back to sleep again. The screen doesn't seem to turn on when this happens and the lid is closed. Opening the lid when the computer exhibits this behavior results in a black (and useless) screen. In order to be able to use the pc you need to wait until it goes back to sleep on its own and then turn it back on.
Another (possibly related) issue appears when the PC turns off automatically (either while running or during sleep) because the battery is exhausted. When this happens, I usually attach the adapter (with the lid open, most of the times) and then press on the power button. A black-and-white screen with a loading bar appears for a few seconds, and then the full-color login screen appears (my pc is set to ask for the password every time it wakes from sleep). After the loading bar is gone and the full-color screen is back, I am unable to input my password, even though the password field looks focused. Neither the keyboard nor the mouse are responsive. This often happens in such a way that it is impossible for me to input my password (or interact with my pc) before it goes back to sleep for lack of interaction. Recently I've discovered that randomly pressing the power button and some keys on the keyboard (I still don't know what exactly triggers this) will make it able to receive input and thus I'll be able to type in my password and log in.
I'd like to know if any of you have encountered the two behaviors I've described and if you think they're normal or have any solutions for them.

    Hello terabytest,
I would be concerned too if my MacBook Pro exhibiting the behavior you described.  For a message like this, I recommend resetting your System Management Controller (SMC) and NVRAM.
Resetting the SMC on portables with a battery you should not remove on your own
Note: Portable computers that have a battery you should not remove on your own include MacBook Pro (Early 2009) and later, all models of MacBook Air, and MacBook (Late 2009).
    Shut down the computer.
Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected.
On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.
Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
Note: The LED on the MagSafe power adapter may change states or temporarily turn off when you reset the SMC.

  • How do you disable automatic checking of email in Mail.app when lid is closed ?

In Mail.app my settings dictate that email will only be downloaded manually when I want it to be downloaded. However, if I close the lid of my Macbook Pro Retina with Mail.app running, it will download mail automatically for me.
Surely it should respect the settings of Mail.app and if I want it to be downloaded manually, then it should never download email automatically when the lid is closed ? Is there a way around this, or someway to disable it aside from having to close down mail everytime I shut the lid ?

It sounds like your machine is using "Power Nap".
    Yes? No?
    Mountain Lion: About Power Nap
If this is in fact the case, I agree it should respect your email settings, but I guess it doesn't, based upon your description.

  • Problem with multi-touch screen when lid is closed

I have a T400s with the MT screen, running a clean installed Win 7 32-bit and all latest Lenovo drivers/BIOS.
I use external screen/keyboard/mouse at work so I am used to have the lid closed. I set in power management in the way that closing the lid does not do anything (e.g., sleep or hibernate).
The problem is: when the lid is fully closed and external mouse is used, the mouse cursor randomly moves and clicks. When random clicks happen, I can see the finger-tap animation near the cursor on the external screen, suggesting that the MT screen receives input even when the lid is closed! It might be heat from the palm rest/keyboard area causing fake taps.
Leaving the lid slightly open (like 15 degrees) solves this problem.
EDIT 1: another clue of the above problem is that while the lid is closed, Windows 7's tablet input panel shows up on the left edge, which typically appears after a tap or a tablet pen gets close to the screen. I also noticed that the random clicks take place near the right edge of the screen.
    Solved!

    @ wesleyyin,
    certainly strange. Some questions to help with the diagnostics;
Which TrackPoint cap you you have on your keyboard, soft domed, soft rim or classic domed (the hairy one)?
Can you try disabling the TrackPoint to see the problem goes away?
Anything else laid on top of the system or between screen and keyboard like a thin cloth or something?
    Thanks

  • MacBook backlight goes off when lid partially closed

My 2yr old MacBook backlight has started turning off when the screen is partially closed. It works fine if the screen is open beyond a certain angle (about 90 degrees), but turns off when the screen is closed beyond that angle. Comparing to another MacBook (newer system): the backlight stays on until the screen/lid is just about closed.
It's definitely the backlight (the logo goes off as well), not the system suspending.
I'm worried this may be an early sign of a general failure.
It's well out of warranty -- any ideas what part should I look at replacing?

    Louie -
I have the mid 2009 MBP - is there a magnet inside the unibody aluminum housing? The lid latch below the track pad is smooth and seems to have some magnetic attraction to the lid itself.
    S.U. -
My problem is that the screen does not go off when the lid is closed. The problems described with the SMC reset involve the screen backlight not turning on. It also says to not reset the SMC unnecessarily. WIll that reset affect anything else?
Tried the paper clip - no joy. Will check with a magnet at work.
Is there a time setting for sleep mode on close?

  • Why trackpad generates 'fake' clicks when lid is closed on Windows 8?

    Hi everyone,
I'm experiencing a pretty weired behavior by the trackpad - when the lid is closed, the trackpad generates fake clicks. I'm using an external mouse and suddenly getting right-clicks and things like that. As soon as I open the lid it all stops. I tried to clean the trackpad and the area of the display covering it when the lid is closed, thinking that something maybe confusing the pad, but it didn't really changed anything.
