Password Lockout/O.S. 9.0.4 - SOS - Pls. HELP :-(

I am using for some years my 'beloved' iMax O.S. 9.0.4, Family # M5521 and find myself suddenly LOCKED OUT!?
The computer starts as usual, BUT gives me only an empty screen except for a dialog box which has the Apple logo and 'Welcome to Mac OS'on top, then in another square with a yellow whistle in front: my e-mail address. Below that, there are three choices for me to click:
Shutdown - Change Password - Log in
When I click on 'Log in' and use my password, it does NOT WORK! For the past several days I tried all the passwords I ever used in my life with this computer. NOTHING ....
On top of the screen [where normally the menu options are], on the left side, there is the usual Apple Logo {but this is grayed out], next to it is HELP [which I can open, but it shows only 'show balloon' 'hide balloon'].
Is there anyone out there in our iMac community who might be able to make some suggestions? I would be very, VERY grateful, since I had not backed up for 2 weeks my files and just started my Tax Return and have all supporting files in my iMac).
I tried already to re-install using my Install CD. It brought forward the Extension Managers site and I was able to check and/or uncheck certain items, but when I wanted to continue, it again asked me for my password.
And then I came to this iMac site, saw the dialog box for 'forgot my password' and was sendt via my e-mail the chance/information to reset it, without being asked for my old one, which I did. IT DID NOT WORK
Thank you in advance for trying to help.

WOW, WOW, WOW, Don Archibald, Sir I am sooo impressed and grateful for your help: IT WORKED!!! You can't imagine the relief from anxiety I experienced, when I followed your instructions to unlock my computer and am now able to reply to you from my OWN iMac!
I am so excited. I would like to send you a ROSE in appreciation
Yesterday I read through all the posted replies you had in the past and I just hoped (and intuitively knew) that you would be the one to help.
But I am not out of trouble yet, I think. I noticed that in my Internet Explorer Preferences window, except for the 'cookies' preferences, I encounter on each one of the other settings [Web Browser, Forms Autofill, Receiving Files, Network and e-mail] the message: "The panel .... could not be loaded. It may be in use by another application or it may be damaged."
I also noticed that when I click on the Apple Logo, the control panels link is missing in that list!?
Any further helpful advice?
Again, I thank you very much for your help,
Don Archibald. It is great that I finally found a community of knowledgeable iMac users. I live in Fountain Hills, AZ and for years tried unsuccessfully to find a support group. I called all the computer-related consultants, etc. in our little town: NO ONE KNEW HOW TO DEAL WITH AN iMac! I was told that in our area iMacs are not used!? That's why I am so pleased to finally have found MY group of people
With friendly regards, Christa_az
