Password mystery

My router is model WRT54G2 V1. The firmware is ver. 1.0.01 build 003, Mar. 26, 2008. It works fine. I have noticed that the password I set when I first installed the router (and which works fine at accessing the control panel at 192.168.1.1) is not the same password that is "revealed" using Snadboy.com's Revelation software under the *********** at the control panel tab Administration>Management. The password I established at installation is ten characters in length, and completely different from the password at Administration>Management, which is nineteen characters in length. Shouldn't they be the same? Am I confused? Thank you.

It's normal so that when someone looks at your back they wouldnt be able to decypher it... much like other password boxes online... that's okay... nothing to be alarmed about

  • My Apple ID password keeps expiring

What has happened is that on June 4, 2012, I turned on my iPhone 4 ot see that it was asking for my Apple ID password.  The password I had had for a while now was no longer working.  Hadn't changed it, and I hadn't forgotten it - the password I was using had just suddenly stopped.
I went to iforgot.apple.com and reset it.  Saw that the password requirements had been updated a bit to insist that I include an uppercase letter in addition to lowercase letters.  Figured that that was why my password mysteriously stopped working.
Today the same thing happened, only this time I turned on my iPad to see that Messenger was asking for my Apple ID password.  I entered it in once, and it didn't work...entered it in a second time and the password prompt disappeared, so I figured that it accepted the password.  Same thing happened on my iPhone.
Then I get to my computer and I see that I cannot log in to icloud.com with the new password I had created on June 4.  Once again, I had to change the stupid password.
Why is this happening (short of someone hacking into my account)?  Is the stupid password going to expire on Wednesday, because I am traveling that day and I'd really rather not have to deal with an expired password.

    fromsouth -
I believe that you have kept the same password for a very long time.  This is the case for my wife on her Apple ID account as well. This problem is affecting only a subset of user accounts.
Perhaps you are right that the server is reacting to some suspicious activity.  If that is the case, it sure would be nice if Apple gave the user a hint as to what activity triggered it.  If Apple is unable to solve this for me, I will be keeping track of precisely when the password expirations occur to see if the same amount of time elaspes between each occurance.
For what it is worth, your theory about what is causing the password resets directly contradicts what thehello wrote previously in this thread:
    thehello wrote:
I have the answer! I called Apple tech support and they know why this is happening!!!
At some point in the past, when you went to appleid.apple.com and logged in, under the "Password and Security" option, there was a setting that allowed you to manage how often your password would expire, ie. every 1, 3, 6, 12 months... you get the idea. Well, in the recent past Apple made some changes and security enhancements to better protect peoples' private information, and guess what? They have since removed this option. One of the Senior Technical Advisors who knew exactly what I was talking about (and had intentionally turned this setting on for themselves) went into their own account, but alas, it the option was not there.
Perhaps the Advisor he talked to was incorrect.

  • HT4314 How do I get my old username in gamecenter back now that it seems to have been eaten?

For christmas I got an upgrade from 3g to 5 on my phone.  I also got put on the cloud, though that doesn't seem to be working just like a LOT of things don't seem to be working, (like my password mysteriously not working and spending an hour at the store resetting it) but that's neither here nor there.  I never really liked the game center so I dealt with it directly as little as possible, but when trying to get back to my app games (specifically Plan X) the game center DEMANDED I pick a new nickname.  My old one, which is also my apple ID was not good enough now, but with a new user ID came a completely new ID on my games and a loss of all my stats.
Then I tried restoring from backup, and joy of joys I had a new, terrible, hard-to-remember username (because ten million billion good ones have all be taken already, including my old username that was somehow unacceptable and was now "in use," figure that out) with my old save games.
basically, what the **** is going on?

It has always been very basic to always maintain a backup copy of your computer for just such an occasion.  Use your backup copy to put everything back.
If for some reason you have failed to backup, not good, then you can transfer itunes purchases from an ipod/iphone/ipad.  Without syncing:  File>Transfer Purchases
In some countries you can redownload some content:

  • Add Wireless Clients

the Airport Express Menu describes a means to 'add wireless clients' from the Airport Utilities Base Station Menu; it says "Choose Add Wireless Clients from the Base Station Menu". Well, there is no such choice available on any screen I can find. My goal is to allow "first attempt" access for a digital frame device (which apparently won't transmit the proper password, something I've tried about a dozen times).
Any help/ideas out there?? Thanks in advance, Ron

I assume you meant "Airport Express manual" (or maybe Online Help, but not "menu.")
In OSX 10.3.9, anyway, the Airport Admin Utility provides a WDS tab. The tools needed to add wireless clients are on this tab.
But you shouldn't need to do this. A wireless client is another base station, such as a second AE. Your digital frame device is just something with a wireless card.
Have you tried disabling wireless security via the Utility's Airport tab? This should solve the password problem for the moment and let you see whether there are other problems awaiting.
Later, you can seek a long-term solution to the password mystery. Perhaps, for example, your AE is set for WPA encryption but your frame device can only do WEP.

  • Disk verification stopped by user

My aunt has a G5 iMac with OS 10.4.11. A year ago, her password mysteriously changed, and when she tried to verify the disk using DU, before the verification finished it would say "stopped by user."
We reset the password with Single User Mode, and she could again verify her disk.
Now, suddenly she can't connect with the internet. Her DSL modem says it has sync and has Ethernet communication with the computer, but if she clicks Network in Profiler, it doesn't list Ethernet or Firewire or anything else.
If the modem says it has Ethernet communication, I suppose the iMac's Ethernet hardware works. What problem could interrupt disk verification and make the OS unaware of Ethernet and Firewire?

Two thing to try:PRAM reset and an SMU reset.
Also, using Disk Utility to check the disk:
    1. Start from your Mac OS X Install disc: Insert the installation disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk.

  • Removing preferred airport networks from 10.3

    Gday All,
Just thought Id post this because I searched all over the web and couldnt find anyone that had the same problem.
Usually to remove a preferred network in 10.3 you can go into keychain access and remove the airport password (admin password required)
Not with this 10.3 iBook G4 running 10.3.9. When I went looking for the password that is usually stored in Keychain Access (Applications:Utilities:Keychain Access) Nothing there!!! Id done this many times previously with no problem.
So I started getting suspicious that it was a software problem so I downloaded two new securtiy updates and an airport update (4.2 I think), rebooted the machine and the airport password mysteriously appeared in the keychain so I could delete it as I normally would.
Im not sure wheather it was the security updates or the airport update that fixed the problem. Hope this helps somebody in the future. If anybody finds out exactly which update fixes the problem, please post in this thread. Cheers.

It seems this is issue is a bug and can be resolved my installing the latest security update.

On Yahoo Mail...and ONLY Yahoo Mail..I get a 404 error after entering my user name and password. This doesn't happen with IE, just Firefox, and just Yahoo Mail. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling FF; no change. Yahoo was absolutely no help whatsoever; can you solve the mystery? Thanks

    HI Emmet,
thanks so much for your posts back. I really appreciate it and yes that does help to know that you could not get it working.
I did have some success, in removing the SSL Authentication checkbox in the smtp server settings - I found that this allowed my friend to be able to send mail from the mail app via his sbcglobal (yahoo) account.
So that did help but of course the messages do not have ssl encryption and I'm not sure how big a deal that is for an individual. He is able to receive mail but unless the SSL authentication box is unchecked, he cannot send.
i hope that helps anyone out there also!
Thanks also for the tip about sparrow - yes I have heard of it and it is very popular, he may end up using that in the end.
    Thanks again, much appreciated.

  • Contribute password is mysteriously incorrect after downloading new trial version

I have downloaded a trial version Contribute 6.5 on my PC. Was previously using version 5. An associate previously downloaded the trail version for his Mac. When I attempt to connect to my website, I get an error message saying my password is incorrect. I have not changed my password recently. I know that I am not making a typo because I have tried numerous times. My associate is not having any problems connecting. He started using his new version before I did. Any ideas why my password is mysteriously incorrect all of a sudden??

Open the editor and when time is up you'll get asked.
You won't lose your catalog if you need to uninstall PSE. Photos and catalogs are stored separately from the program files, but it's true that all you need to do is to enter the serial number into the trial. There may also be something under the Help menu in the editor, like Sign In, that will let you go ahead and take care of this.

  • Mysterious password won't go away

I'm running 9.2 on a beige G3. Trying to setup file sharing on local network. In File Sharing control panel, under my "owner" profile, there's a password and I have no idea what it is. When I delete it (and "Allow owner to change password" is checked) then close the window, then reopen it, the old mysterious password is still there, not the one I entered. If I just delete it, close the window, then reopen it, the password field is still blank... If I then enter a new password, then close and reopen the control panel, the old password reappears, not the one I entered. I've even tried entering then restarting the computer. Problem persists. Can there be a password on my system that I don't know about? And, I'm the only person who has or does use this machine. How can I rid my system of this mystery?
    Thanks ahead of time.
    Jim

Apple Control Panels have a habit of displaying a fixed number of bullets, regardless of the length of the password. If you change it to a three letter password, I fully expect you will still get 8 bullets.

  • Mysterious Firmware Password set spontaneously.

I have worked a computer repair shop for 4 years and have dealt with some peculier things... Usually I hear the customer say, "I swear I didn't do anything..." Well this time it's true.
Some info that might possibly be contributed...?
I have my Macbook Pro /w Retina Display. I have a dual boot with Windows 8 that works natively, and in a virtual machine. About two months ago I dabbled with a Triple boot using Ubuntu Linux and so I had installed rEFIt to easily navigate the various operating systems. However, I moved the Recovery partition to a backup drive because of Windows' issue with installing on a 4th partition. (It complains about a max amount of primary partitions.) I have since removed Linux, but haven't returned the Recovery Partition.
So, my system is simply dualbooting.
I am used to using the option key to navigate between OSX and Windows, however for the first time I found that a Padlock symbol appeared after doing the usual option key hold. I have NOT set up a Firmware Password, nor is there anyone around this laptop with the knowledege to do so. The Recovery partition hasn't been present on this machine in a month, and I was under the impression that a Firmware Password was primarily installed via the Recovery partition, however I'm sure there is another way around that.
I called Apple, and they had some hash key, had me read them the last 16 digits of the code I get when I press Control, Option, Command, Shift, and S simultaneously. Then they informed me that they could not run their program for fear that it (the program) would be leaked to the public. They told me that I would either have to take the machine apart myself to flash the firmware, (something I am willing, but not wanting to do,) or drive the four hours to an Apple Store.
I am just pleading... I did not set this Password, nor did anyone else. What could have caused this MacBook to set a Firmware Password, and is there anyway I can remove it?
Thanks again, even if you just read it...
    Casey

In case you haven't seen, all on Firmware Password that Apple seems to publish - it's not that 'mysterious'...
If Apple must put hands on, perhaps there is an AASP closer than the Store. The AASP network is usually 'denser'. Locate the nearest via Apple's Support webpage.
    Good luck!

  • Username and password a mystery

    FROM: Oracle HUB Team Member
    TO: OTN Support Team Member
I have a customer on the phone who does not know her user ID or password for OTN and needs to download software.
She called the HUB asking that we change her password for her, but she doesn't know her user ID either.
Please send this information to her at: [email protected]
    Thank you very much

Mailbox name is simply a name to identify it to you on your phone - call it whatever you want.  When you highlight it with the trackpad, it's the name that shows in the address bar on the phone.
In order to receive mail with the Exchange server, you need to have BES enabled ($45 / month) rather than the "standard" BIS.
The $29.99 Email & Web for Blackberry is called BIS (Blackberry Internet Service). This gives you data access for web browsing and up to 10 personal email accounts (Yahoo, Hotmail, Gmail, Verizon.net..etc). This service is configured by you, directly on the device.
The $44.99 BES (Blackberry Enterprise Server) is Blackberry's corporate solution. It also includes data access, but you only need this data plan if you need your work email and they use a BES or Microsoft Exchange Server. This type of service is configured by your IT Administrator and controlled remotely.
To sum it up, both provide total unlimited data access on your Blackberry, but the $29.99 BIS is for personal email only and the $44.99 BES is for corporate email only.
    (Thank you nmchileman!)
Your statement about not being able to access your email via the web any longer puzzles me - if you can't access it on the web, then it seems to me it owuldn't be accessible on the phone either???  Did I misunderstand something?

  • 10.4 Tiger Server FTP has new mystery password

    10.4.11 Server
I've been running the FTP site for my freelancers for 4 years without a hiccup. Over this past weekend it suddenly won't let them log on. When I go to administer the site to see what's up, there are 8 characters in the password box, but my password is 7 characters long. I've deleted the user and group and rebuilt twice using the same 7 character password but each time I leave the username, or the group setting, or Workgroup Manager and then go back in the password has changed back to 8 characters.
How do I reset this password so it will stick? Or, how do I discover what password the user is being assigned by the machine?
Of course I'm also curious how this could occur but right now it's much more important that my freelancers can access the FTP site as they have for 4 years without a problem.

there are 8 characters in the password box, but my password is 7 characters long. I've deleted the user and group and rebuilt twice using the same 7 character password but each time I leave the username, or the group setting, or Workgroup Manager and then go back in the password has changed back to 8 characters.
The box ALWAYS shows a fixed number of bullets. Passwords are immediately hashed, and it cannot determine the length of your existing password, only whether the password you entered is correct or not.
Here is another example of this:
"Regardless of how many characters are actually in a Mac OS X 10.2 password, seven bullet characters (•••••••) will appear in the New Password and Verify fields the next time the password is edited."

  • Mysterious beahvior and password

I have a g3 ibook that won't boot... I get the blinking no system folder icon on startup. It won't boot off CD (yes, I held the C key). It won't boot into single user mode. It won't boot into disk mode (T key).
If I option boot I get a screen with a large lock, an input field (password?), and the option arrow. I'm the admin and know (knew?) the password before it started misbehaving this way.
If I boot into openfirmware, any command asks me for a password... one I don't know...
The machine is not stolen, my sister-in-law bought it from her school when they upgraded (they are no help about possible passwords). I'm supposed to be the mac guru in the family... any suggestions?
