Password not required for system updates

Purchased new imac at apple store in March - let them perform the set-up.  Was told by several individuals at retailer that system was secure out of the box, and that any changes to machine would require user name/password.  After three months and many updates, system has only asked for password once, and that was when we installed ilife 11.  We do have the imac set-up for automatic login, however, software update is not set-up to download updates automatically. Is this a defect in the machine, or was a setting changed inadvertently at set-up by the retailer.  What should the default settings be to ensure that downloads (apple and other) require a password to download.
Please help.
Thanks

G'day,
The first user account that you create has Administrator access to the machine.  In recent updates to Snow Leopard, an Administrator user does not need to re-enter their credentials in order to apply Apple System Updates.
However, for any other software installation requiring access to "system" folders, the username and password will need to be entered.
This is not a security issue at the current time, although some people (including myself) think that it is not good practice to use an Administrator account all of the time.  If malicious software ever does get through your defences, it is better if it can only run as a Standard User!
A more secure configuration for your machine would be to create a second user account (a Standard User), and do all of your work in that.
If you run Software Update from that account, it will then require you to enter administrator credentials to run the update.  In fact - all Application installations (even "drag and drop" and Apple Store) to your /Applications directory will also require the entry of credentials.
Cheers,
Rodney

  • Hard drive "does not meet the requirements" for system updates

    Hi,
I'm running 10.2 and I'm trying to update my computer to the more recent version, except that I've gone through the update downloads on this site and anything higher than 10.3 tell me I need to run 10.3 to run it. When I tried to upgrade to 10.3, I was told that I "cannot install this software on this disk. This volume does not meet the requirements for this update". What does that mean and how do I rectify the problem? Thank you very much in advance.

Hi Kappy! I have a similar problem: I had a problem in the past and had to re-install the system. I now have a previous sytem folder on my mac which I do not dare touch. I used to have a later version than 10.3.3 (I cannot remember which). I am now trying to update with the 10.3.9 combo update (just bought a new ipod) and I get the famous "does not meet the requirements" message. I have repaired permissions and done Onyx maintenance - still nothing. I wonder whether somehow the installer detects that there is already some newer component installed and does not want to re-install. I am awfully frustrated... Thanks in advance for your help.

  • Why is my password still required for app updates on my iPhone with iOS6?

I've updated my iPhone 4S and my new iPad both to iOS6.  Now when I try to install updates no password is required on the iPad, but my iPhone still pops up the password request window.
I've tried restarting the iPhone after the install but that didn't change anything.  Is there a setting or anything else that I need to change on the phone in order to no longer need to enter my password every time I update apps?

I found this on another thread. I disabled restrictions on my iPhone and it no longer asked for my password. I have not tried re-enabling restrictions though to see if the problem reoccurs.

  • My RAZR will not look for system updates???

It says I need a "Motorola service account", but when I follow the only prompt I have to set one up it won't connect to the server. My wifes Razr updated to JB with no problems.  Hers is a newer model, still just a Razr though...I'd like to update, anyone have any ideas??  Thanks in advance!

Is your device on a data plan? You could download the JB update (just google it) to your PC, transfer it to your SD card, and your Razr should find it in install it when you tell it to check for update. Good luck.

  • Your system does not meet the minimum requirement for this update (9996)

    Hi
recently had to reformat my system with windows 7 profesional. All windows updates where performed and all the drivers where installed correctly except the ethernet driver. windows 7 cannot find a suitable driver. I then downloaded the driver from the link provided on the hpe-590t download site, which is described as a intel gigabyte driver sp52222, however  the software driver comes up with the following message your system does not meet the minimum requirement for this update (9996). Has anyone had a similar problem.

I tend to agree that either the NIC is bad or possiblly a factory restore would help.

  • OS X 10.10.1 installer says the requirement for the update does not meet

    Greetings.
I noticed the auto update setting of my MacBook Air had been not working for a month or so today.
So I tried to manually update OS X 10.10.1 (released Nov 17, 2014) and got this message from the installer: "OS X Update can't be installed on this disk. This volume does not meet the requirements for this update."
But the thing is, my mac already meet the requirement, as description of the update.
My mac is on OS X 10.10 and OS X Yosemite 10.10.1 Update states the system requirement as "OS X Yosemite 10.10"
How can I update my mac? What can be the source of this problem?
FYI, once I participated in Public Beta of Yosemite and clean-installed 10.10 from 10.9 with disk formatting.
Tried solution: rebooting, and repairing permission and repairing OS disk using Disk Utility.
    Thank you in advance.

In About this Mac, click on the Version number. It will change to a build number. Please post that. Although it sounds like you don't have a beta still installed, it may be still hanging around which would cause the problem you see.
    The GM Build was 14A389.
Never knew the version number could be clicked, and now it says 10.10 (14A379b).
I googled the build number and it's Public Beta 4. Now it is clear that my mac still have old beta version AND the OS X showed a message to me when I tried to download a copy of Yosemite from the App Store:
Maybe the OS thinks itself as a full release of 10.10 for some reason. It explains why it did not auto download and install the system updates, regardless of the auto update System Preference of App Store.
Now I am going to download and re-install 10.10 rather than updating the OS.
Thank you very much Barney-15E for providing the clear answer and others for reading and giving advices.
    Have a nice day!

  • I have a G5 and bought and upgraded to osx 10.5.  now i need to upgrade to 10.5.6 or higher, but when i download and try to install, i get message "this volume does not meet requirements for this update".

i am trying to sync an ipad to a power mac g5.  i bought and upgraded to osx 10.5 and have tried to download and 10.5.6 or higher, but i keep getting same message:  "you cannot install mac os x update on this volume.  this volume does not meet requirements for this update".  help!

Mac OS X 10.5.8 Combo Update
Java for Mac OS X 10.5 Update 5
To me, in all such updates, goes without saying maybe: backup, repair permissions, repair your drive (Disk Warrior does more reliable and thorough job, and it comes out to pennies if you don't wait until needed). Clone your system so you can restore or use the backup - just in case.
I'd even do a fresh format after your clone is done and do a full OS clean install and update, and then a quick import from Setup Assistant.
Mac computer with USB 2.0 port
Mac OS X v10.5.8 or later
    iTunes 10.2 or later recommended
    (free download from www.itunes.com/download)
    iTunes Store account
    Internet access
I'm going to assume there is something with the partitions on the drive, partition table most likely, though I know I've seen others with that error message - doesn't really point to cause, rarely does (make sure latest firmware update etc is sometimes included but again, we know that isn't why).

  • 10.5.7 This volume does not meet the requirements for this update.

First, 10.5.7 is not showing up in software update. I downloaded both the delta and combo 10.5.7 updates and they both give me "This volume does not meet the requirements for this update." I've done all the requisite stuff, permissions, volume check, reset PRAM, etc. I've downloaded the updates several times, and they worked on my 2008 iMac and 2007 Macbook Pro, so I know they work. I've searched and searched and can't find a resolution. It's as if there is some signature written to my boot volume that is preventing this update. Applecare was of no help either. Any ideas?

  • Im trying to install a new application on my mac but it keeps on coming up with 'The volume of this disk does not meet the requirements for this update' any ideas how to solve this?

I have recently fully updated my mac to 10.8.2 and i am trying to install a small facebook application but every time i come to chose the disk it says ' OS X facebook developer preview can not be installed on this disk. This volume of this disk does not meet the requirements for this update' any ideas on how to get round this?
    thanks

That may be the new Mountain Lion "sandbox" protective software kicking in, possibly, because ML "thinks" that App doesn't meet ML's new strict security requirements.   A common phenomena.  If you feel the 3rd party App is really OK, you can override this feature and install the new App by holding down the Command key when you click to install the new App.  That's one possibility for the error message appearing.  If not, another possibility is that that Developer Preview software package requires some previous piece of software be installed prior to downloading this Preview.  You would have to check the Facebbok websiste's Developer Forums for help if this is the case.
    Hope this helps

is there a way to install this update?

    Hello
More information would be useful, for example which Mac OS are you running.
On the left menu item  About this Mac provides useful information.
Also did you use Software Update to determine the update?
Using Software Update can ensure you download and install the correct package for your particular Mac and OS version.
