Password protect 2 connected usb drives

I have an Airport Extreme Base Station. I have one USB hard drive connected to it that's protected with a password. No problem so far.
Now I want to add another USB hard drive to the AEBS via an usb hub. I was wondering if it's possible to password protect that new hard drive with another password than the first hard drive?
So, to connect to drive 1 you need to know password A.
To connect to drive 2 you need to know password B.

Connect that second drive and launch Airport Utility. Go to disks and explore your options. You'll find you cannot do that.

  • ISO: a way to password protect a volume or drive

Is there any EASY way to password protect a volume or drive either via the OS or by some utility? I'd like to have one drive with my sensitive docs that's password protected that I could carry with me and use on multiple systems. I see various encryption apps that involve elaborate schemes for protecting data. I'm looking for a simple Access/No-Access solution.
Ideally I'd like it so when I boot up or when I plug in my "protected drive" I'd be asked for a password. If I, or whomever is trying to access the drive, declines or puts in the wrong password the volume simply would not mount or better still, mount but be inaccessible until the password is entered.
With so much security built in to OSX seems like there must be a way to do this.
    Thanks!

You entered your password when you logged in; when you authenticated yourself. Unix has never done a second password; you authenticated yourself at the front door. You can certainly set up the file protections to keep other users out.
As for password-protecting a specific object, that's -- as others have stated -- an add-on. Or you use the built-in FileVault stuff, or external hardware.
There are current-generation drives that have password protection mechanisms or similar authentication -- USB keydisks and hard disks. Or you can use a commodity drive and the built-in FileVault. This akin to what you remember with the SyQuest drive.
Or consider products such as the following:
    http://www.pgp.com/products/wholediskencryption/tech_specs.html
    http://www.usbgear.com/USB-Encryption.html
Or what some of us do. Unplug the disk containing the data, and lock it up somewhere safe. If a desk drawer isn't sufficient, there are also physical disk enclosures with physical locks available on the market.
Realize that various of these encryption products aren't worth as much as the proverbial warm bucket of spit; various of these products either use colossally weak encryption, or have mis-implemented encryption. It would not surprise me to learn that some even have back-doors.

  • Help- how to password protect an external hard drive?

I'm just stuck. There must be a way to encrypt or password protect an external hard drive. No?

The easiest way is to make an encrypted disk image of the folder contents with Disk Utility. Go to Disk Utility's File menu -> New -> Disk Image from Folder. There you can pick an encrypted disk image. Once you have made that image, delete the folder that it came from and leave the image behind. Mind you, there is always the risk you might lock yourself out permanently from that data if the image becomes corrupted. You are safer keeping the external hard disk in a physically safe place when not in use.

  • Password required to mount usb drive in linux

Hi all. Hoping someone can help me with a problem I have trying to mount a drive connected to the USB port on my BT Homehub 4.
I have a Toshiba USB drive connected to the USB port on the BT Homehub 4. I can access this drive from any windows device by browsing to the homehub IP address \usb1.
When I try to mount the drive in linux on my Raspberry PI however, it asks for a password. I have tried the homhub admin password but this doesn't work.
I know that there is no permissions problem with the drive or PI because I was able to mount the same drive using the same mount command on the same Raspberry PI using the Homehub 3. The problem only occured when I upgraded from homehub 3 to homehub 4.
    Any ideas?

Quite a bit of the old Speedtouch coding probably remains from the earlier home hubs, so you try "Administrator" (capital A) and a blank password, or use BT as the password.

  • How to password protect an external hard drive

I just bought an external HD to use with Time Machine and for some extra space, but I would really like to password protect it. Since it has all my files on it, it is just as important as password protecting my computer. I'm thinking I probably have to use Disk Utilities, but I'm not quite sure how to do it.
Please be as detailed as possible, because I don't delve into Utilities very often.
    Thanks
P.S. My HD is a Toshiba Portable Hard Drive, if it makes any difference. It advertises on the back that it can be password protected, but I have been unable of finding any way to do so.

    Hello FidgetingFinhc,
The best protection for your data is to maintain the data as a encrypted disk image. Creating a "sparse image" will require a password to open:
I would follow the instructions provided by the Apple Support document below on how to make this happen.

    Hope this helps.

  • Password Protecting An External Hard Drive.

I am running 10.6.2 on my Macbook Pro 2.33 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo.
I've just used Super Duper to back up and make a bootable copy of my Macbook Pro's internal hard drive. My question is can I password protect this new external hard drive, and it if it password protected, will I still be able to boot up from it should anything go wrong with the internal hard drive?
If the answer is yes to both questions, then I would very much appreciate some tips on how to go about this.
    Many thanks in advance.

there are no built in tools for that. but you can turn on filevault on your home directory and encrypt your home folder. that's enough for most people as there really isn't any sensitive data outside your home directory. then of course the home directory on the clone will be just as protected.
if you want full disk encryption you need to use 3rd party tools like TrueCrypt or PGP encryption. I'm not familiar with them and don't know if they allow you to boot from encrypted drives.

  • Adobe password protection vs. Google Drive

A client brought to my attention that a password protected and watermarked document I shared with him was stripped of all protection when he uploaded it via Google Drive. Would you please indicate what further measures I can take to allow the protections I have put into place with Adobe Acrobat Pro XI to remain intact? Thank you.

What do you mean by "protection": "open password" or "permissions password". If you secure a PDF with only "permissions password" intending to limit what the document's recipient can do, then, when you do that in Acrobat, you get an alert that all Adobe products respect restrictions set by permissions but the 3rd-party PDF Viewers may not respect them. This protection technology in Acrobat/Reader is very old, going back to the days when Reader was the only game in town. Now that there are many other PDF Viewers many of them do not conform to the published standards (ISO-32000-1). Google Drive's PDF Viewer is one of those.
The bottom line is that you cannot rely on the "permissions password" in Acrobat to enforce restrictions on what the recipients of your PDFs can do, unless all of them use Adobe Reader. There are even Web sites which will strip protection for you (but you'll have yo upload your PDF to them, which means that they may use its content). If you really want to restrict what the users can do with your documents, you need to use one of many available DRM solutions, but that could be expensive.

  • How do I password protect the external hard drive used for Time Machine backup

Can anyone help me to put password protection on the external hard drive I use to Time Machine backup my iMac internal hard drive?  I use Snow Leopard 10.6

I think that was FileVault 1.  Starting with Lion (10.7) Mac OS X uses FileVault 2, which is whole disk encryption.
Based on complaints seen in these forums, I would say FileVault 2's only complaint has been when people forget their password/encryption key (it seems an encrypted disk does prevent anyone without the password from accessing the data, including the real owner).  Otherwise it does not seem to be causing any serious issues.  Your Mileage may vary and objects are closer than they appear in your side view mirror (standard disclaimer).  Of course this is all academic while you are using Snow Leopard (10.6).
There are other whole disk encryption packages available, such as PGP Whole Disk Encryption, HOWEVER, I would not advise it for your Mac OS X boot disk, as it has been known to be a problem when you try to install operating system updates or upgrade to a new version.  NOTE:  I have not seen PGP Whole Disk Encryption discussed much, ever since FileVault 2 came along.

  • Nokia X2 RM1013 unable to connect: USB driver miss...

    Hi,
Trying to connect to the Nokia X2 but Windows 7 can't find a USB driver..
That means the Nokia software can't connect..
How does one find a USB driver for the Nokia X2?
    The butterfly effect

    http://www.3ptechies.com/mobile/android/android_adb-drivers-download.html
Found some ADB drivers for the older Nokia X models which seem to work with the X2 as well.
Despite installing them (Windows 7 now seems happy with the drivers) still can't connect with Nokia Suite or the older Nokia PC Suite.
Been trying to copy the data over with MobileTrans as well:
    http://www.wondershare.net/ad/mobiletrans/?gclid=CIjD78v0s8ECFQd8vQodLHAAqg
However it seems to be unable to find the phone despite drivers now being installed.
It did copy the data from the old Nokia 700 very effectively... but that's only half a job.
Anyone successfully transferred their data via a USB?

  • Password Protecting Printer connected to TC?

    Hey Everyone!
In my house we use the TC as our wireless router and I have my printer connected to the TC so I can wirelessly print. However, my roommates have been abusing the fact that my printer is wirelessly available to them.
Is there a way to password protect the printer so my roommates can still use our internet connection but not my printer?
    Thanks!

Have you already installed Bonjour for Windows on your PC? I'm not sure as you didn't state if your were able to print before via your AXBS.

  • Forgot windows password - Cannot boot w/ USB Drive IdeaPad N585

    Hi All,
Like the subject line says, my son forgot his password.
I did some research and found a way to reset it using a USB drive to boot from.
The problem is that Windows 8 will not boot from the USB.I tried 2 different software with no luck.
In the BIOS I even disabled the Secure Boot option thinking that had something to do with it.
The USB Boot option is enabled.
    Any ideas?
    Thank you,

  • How do I password protect an external hard drive?

I'm using a 500 GB external hard drive to back up my PowerMac. I'd like to find a simple, robust "password protection" tool or software, to password protect this drive, in case it falls in to nefarious hands. If it's free, that's fine, but I'm also happy to buy. Any idea's?
    Thanks!

    Hi-
The best protection for your data, is to maintain the data as a encrypted disk image. This will provide both the need for a password, as well as decryption. Creating a "sparse image" will require a password to open:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107333
Ext. HDD passwords, in OS X, are just permissions, which can be changed, or hacked, and don't give much protection.

  • Connect USB drive automatically at computer starts

    Hi Apple fans
I recently upgraded my home network with a 1TB 2.5' external hard drive plugged into my Airport Extreme, which we use at home to store files and more importantly as Time Machine HD for backup.
the trick is when a computer starts (both a iMac G5 and a Macbook are on the network), I need to manually connect to the hard drive for the OS to mount/recognize it and Time Machine to be able to run backups.
Is there a command or even a script which will execute this automatically so when one computer starts the HD on the Airport USB mount automatically in Finder? thanks for any suggestions

    Hi Jolly Giant
Ever since the Airport Extreme 802.11n exists i used wireless HD storage, and lately used it as Time Machine backup. Never had (fingers crossed) any issues, the Airport Setup is quite handy to setup access and password for USB connected HD on the AP Extreme.
    Regards
    Y.
