Password protect catalogues, folders and individual images

I would very much like to the ability to password individual catalogues and even specific folders or images.
In my main database i have some sensitive shots and would prefer not to accidentally browse over them to other clients.
Anyway, keep up the good work team and sorry i've not been able to join you since the original testing days before 1.0. The product has really matured in my absence.
All the best,
Simon Fuller

The "Password Protection" feature of iWeb works only to protect entire sites...not individual pages. The workaround, then, is to make the page that you want to protect a separate site in and of itself and password protect it. You can then create hyperlinks to this password protected site from your regular iWeb site.

  • Password protecting certain folders on a mac.

I have 2 macs in the house and 3 pcs connected through a netgear wireless router.  One of my macs is shared and has all documents and folders that all the other computers can see.  I want to password protect some folders so that other computers need password access to see them.  I have visitors come to the house with their laptops and when they join my wireless they can see my documents.  So, all I need is make these folders password protected.  I am using osx lion on the computer that shares the folders.

What program is the recommended program?
I haven't used anything I can recommend, but if I did, it would likely be a Iron Key as it has the advantage of being off the machine, easily disposable or locked in a safe.
However I've tried Filevault and Disk Images and I can say you don't want to go there to simply protect a few folders.
    Yes, I know, no help.

  • Windows Server 2008 - password protect network folders

I was tasked to password protect a few folders that are being shared in the network.  The folders are stored in the server (that i have admin access) and anyone in the network have full access to the folders and the files inside those folders. The computers linked in the network have different OS - 3 running vista, 2 running xp and 1 windows server 2008.  Anybody in the office can use the computers without being prompted for a password (except the server) and the folders are accessible through any of those computers.
    The following are my questions:
    1. Is it possible to password protect folders shared in the network? If so, if someone wants to access those password protected folder through any of the computers connected to the network, will they be prompted to enter a password to be able to access it or the system will just say "access denied?" If so, please give detailed instructions on how to do it.
    2. If it is possible to password protect network folders, is it possible to put different passwords on each folders? If so please give detailed instructions on how to do it.
    3. If it is not possible to do any of the mentioned above through windows, is it possible with the use of a third-party software? If so, what are those third party software?

Hi All,   First time on this forum and am finding it very interesting (sorry about the proposed as answer above.. hit the wrong key).
I found this topic particularly interesting and am looking to do a similar thing but seemed to have gotten around it quite easily (if I am on the same lines as greggync777 that is).
My problem is this I have a Home Theatre Network set up in my lounge to several locations around the house with around 8 gb of videos/music/pics etc, all works fine on connected pc's with WMC (all using Windows 7) and all is shared by family for entertainment.
I also have a Seperate workstation where I do my work (video editing) which involves storing considerable amounts of footage and more importantly all the work files/folders all of which is confidential, at the moment is also on a seperate pc which also houses 8 hdd with around 6gb of ever growing video information.
My point is that both these PC's ( HTPC and my WORKSTATION) are a bit too noisy despite having installed the best I can afford fans/Samsung eco green hdd's. My desire is to build a main super server running WHS 2008 (The size/Cooling/Noise etc is not a problem due to where it will be located). My main concern is Security with so many in the family having direct access to the Server so I want to restrict which files/folders they can subsequently access once there.  I want to be the only one to have access to my work from my PC and everyone else denied access.  I have set up a test rig running WHS08 and have set up access with several PC's using passwords for the server etc which was straightforward after creating a user account for them on whs08, therein laid the problem of then how to keep them from accessing my side of the server which is when I hit up on this thread after much searching. Following one of the suggestions above I went to the folder in question (in my case this will be a plus as all my work will be in one main folder with several thousand sub folders) to the security tab/permissions etc and firstly removed access to everyone except the server administrator. I then granted access only to one PC on the network - the one that is my workstation together with a password ( I meant to say upto this point everyone I had given access to the server could access my test folder), went back to my PC and was able to access as normal after entering the password. I then went to every other PC on the network (that has access to the Server) where I am pleased to say all denied me access to my folder. (my work pc by the way is running XPsp3). Not sure if it will work for Greggync777 or if it what he is looking to do but it did for me. I apologise also if I have rambled on a bit for my first thread.
    tks   Dave

  • REQUEST: Support for password-protected PDF files and SD-card installation

I would like to request for the features in the topic.
The current version can't open password-protected files hence I still need to download them on a PC before viewing them.
SD-card install is necessary for some devices running on Froyo as they don't have a lot of internal memory.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi AndrewSV,
I am sorry to hear that you are having problems opening password-protected PDF files, and that the users are being prompted for a password, which shouldn't be required for Viewing and Printing the file.
I have opened up a [https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=900822 bug for this issue], and our engineers and volunteers will be able to investigate this issue.
Yes, please attach the write-protected PDF as an example, so that they can see what's happening.
Thank you for your help! =)

Is there a way to password protect app folders in iOS5?

Not possible.  Your only options remotely regarding this are Restrictions.

  • Programs to password protect certain folders on my Mac

Is anyone familiar with any good apps to password protect particular folders with OS 10.7?

There are none. If you need that kind of security, use FileVault, not a hack.

  • Password protecting file folders

This is something that I'm ashamed to not know, but how does one password protect a file folder or document? I want to store all my super secret passwords in one place because I have a poor memory, but i don't want just anyone to go onto my mac and be able to access them. this is the first and only time that I've found something that was non-intuitive on the mac. Help me Obi-Wan!

You are aware that all your passwords or most of them are stored in the keychain? And you can access the keychain and see your passwords in plain text if you wish to.
You cannot password protect an individual file, but you can create a password-protected encrypted .dmg which is almost the same thing.
One caveat: when you create the password for the ,dmg encypted image, *+do not+* store it in the keychain. If you do, then the image will unlock for anyone using your account.

  • Password protecting mail app and permanent deletion of emails so they don't appear in spotlight search

I realise that there is a temporary way to prevent this happening by unticking the 'mail' option in the spotlight search settings menu, but how do you permanently delete the emails? I assumed that when I hit delete then emptied the trash box, the mails were gone for good. But finding that they remain stored in some hidden place and can be easily accessed is very annoying! In fact, finding that other users can quickly change the settings back and have free access to my email is rather disturbing anyway, especially as there is no way to password protect my email account once i activate the mail app. the apple mail app is linked to my yahoo account, but within yahoo mail there seems to be no problem in regards to deleted mail being stored somewhere else, only within the apple app system.
So i guess id like to know, is there some way to password protect my account or do I just need to keep deleting my account before lending the ipad to someone else and then reinstating it? And is there any way to properly delete emails for good?
I would be happy just to go without the mail app and log in directly through yahoo in Safari, except that I find the notification alert when I receive a new mail very handy!!

[edit] I dragged the email I sent through the MBP Mail app (under MAILBOXES > Sent > Yahoo!) to the highlighted Sent folder (YAHOO! > Sent), and now it shows up on all Yahoo Sent folders (iPad app, web browser, phone app). Not entirely solved the issue but will use web browser to sent future emails to keep everything in sync.

  • Can you password protect pages folders

When you create a folder in pages, can you password protect the folder, or it only that documents can have a password?

Only the file can be password protected from within Pages. If you don't want the file to open on your Mac without the password, then do not check, “Remember this password in my keychain,” in the password dialog. Record your document password where you can retrieve it — in case your forget, or if using keychain, in case it becomes damaged.
You can password protect (and encrypt) a folder that contains Pages documents, whether they are password protected or not.
In Finder, press shift+command+U to launch the Utilities Window.
    Launch Disk Utility
File > New > Disk Image from Folder…
From the Select Folder to Image dialog, select the folder and click Image
From the New Image from Folder dialog
    Image Format
Compressed - folder will be read-only with no ability to add documents later
    Read/write - intuitive
    Encryption: 256-bit AES Encryption
    Save
In the new password dialog, set your password
You should strive for password complexity that shows strength as green
Record your password where you can retrieve it.
Again, the caveat about keychain as mentioned above
A new disk image will appear with the name you gave it, and a .dmg extension
    Double-click for the password challenge
The disk image will mount on your desktop just like an installer. Double-click to open.If you chose Image format as read/write, you can drag additional Pages documents into this open folder
Right-click on the mounted image and choose Eject to close it
You can edit Pages documents in-place in the mounted folder, but you will get a warning about space in the image container. If you want to increase the disk image size, open it in Disk Utility. It willl appear below the line in the left panel. Select the .dmg there, and from the Images menu, choose Resize…, and adjust accordingly.

  • Anyone please know of a download to enable password protection for folders?

I've seen a helpful thread about creating a disk image to password protect folders but feel a download might be simpler. I've found a few for PCs but none for the mac... 1st posting, any advice appreciated.

Try the applications on this page.

  • Password Protect: Whole website or individual pages??

  • Trying to password protect a file.  Encrypted image created...now what?

    I read this article:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1578
and I have created an encrypted image (.dmg) with no issue.
I'm trying to password protect a file on my computer.  It is a Word document.  I can't figure out how to move it to the encrypted image.
The support article said, "You can move files to or from an encrypted disk image as easily as you can from a non-encrypted disk image."
I tried dragging the file to the image....nothing.
Not sure where to go from here.  Thanks in advance for the help.
    Chrystal

The advice you're getting from mende1 is not accurate. If you accurately followed the directions at that link you gave, the disk image is certainly not read-only! When creating a new disk image, the default is to create a read/write image, so unless you changed that setting when creating the disk image, that's not your problem.
My suspicion is that you're not using the image file properly. Once you have the disk image file, here's what you need to do to put the Word file in question on it:
    1) Double-click the disk image file that you created. This will "mount" the disk image as a "disk," which will show up on your desktop (if you have the Finder set to show such things on the desktop) or in the sidebar of any Finder window.
    2) Drag the Word file onto the "disk" - NOT the disk image file! It should copy the Word file onto the "disk".
    3) "Eject" the "disk" by dragging it (NOT the disk image file!) to the trash, or clicking the eject icon next to it in the sidebar of a Finder window. Once the disk is ejected, the file is locked and the contents cannot be accessed without the password.
    4) For the most security, put the original Word file in the trash and choose Secure Empty Trash from the Finder menu. Before doing this, though, it would be wise to try to re-open the disk image and make sure you successfully copied the Word file onto it, and that you can open it just fine.

  • How can I password protect imbedded folders within an iWeb-created website?

I have read that iWeb will not allow you to password protect individual imbedded content (ex. individual albums or pictures), but, that you can only protect the whole site. I have also read on here that the password protection for the site isn't very good and is easily broken.
Short of creating multiple pages (each password protected) and then linking all the private pages to a public page, is there any easier way to password protect individual items of content rather than the whole site, preferably in a way that can't be "broken" in terms of bypassing the password?
Maybe I need to use a different application to create the website? If so, recommendations?

What kind of content? If you use PDF files you can password protect them when you create them. The same goes for Word documents.

  • How can I protect my data in numbers from unintentional user of my iPad by other family members? In other words, how can I password protect my numbers and other apps from apple computer company?

I have other members of my family use my iPad for educational/recreational use, young children who may want to play kid games. I don't want them to accdently get into my data stored in the three business apps from apple. I would like to password protect these files.
I would also like to log out of the email systems that I use, so some one else can use this device to access their own emails. By leaving my accounts open al the time, is really asking for trouble from a host of sources.
I can't believe that the iPad is not designed to protect the privacy and data from prying eyes ... Un intuitional as it may be.
Please fix this issue so I create my info on this device and enjoy it fully. Or tell me how I can protect my data.
    Thnax.

Thanx for your response. Any data stored anywhere should be able to be protected from stealing, malicious destruction or unintentional destruction. Theo ad an be stolen and without any kind ofpassword protection, the thief could get into your sensitive data.
If Apple wants iPad to become a business tool that can be used with ideas, thots, data protected, then Apple needs to provide this protection to it's customers. Now it's unto the users to use it or not.
I know iPad is being considered to be used by doctors, and can u imagine the confidentiality requirements of HIPPA rules... It will make this device not usable without data protection. I am sureweall have heard about hacking going on at all levels. It's surprising that this device's software is left unprotected.
My iPad may be sitting on my desk and my 3 year old grand daughter would pick it up and start "playing" with it. That means I can't store anything on this machine that may possibly be changed.
I have discussed this with specialists in apple stores, and those who have been around info technology understand my concerns and they may forward this request further up. They do not have the answer for it..... So far.
I think data security should be everyone's concern... Be it a one person device or multiple user device.
I hope that some responsible people at Apple would read this and provide the protection that will make this device lot more acceptable in the business world.
