Password protect DVD

Hi all,
Is it possible/does anyone know how to password protect a DVD while burning data to it? I have created a .dmg in DU; it remains password protected while on the HD, but in the process of burning it to DVD, DU asks for the folder's password, I enter it (without setting it to remember in Keychain), but after burning, the DVD will open on any of my Macs in any of the accounts, admin or not, without the need for a password.
Thanks for any insight.

Ah Niel, seems like you're always there. Thanks yet again.
Wonder if you know/would explain the differences/pros/cons of using "compressed" vs "read/write" vs "DVD/CD master" vs "hybrid" for Image Format when creating .dmg in DU?
Besides "read/write," can any have data added to them after creating the .dmg?

    Hi,
If you create a new account and go into the parental controls section and select 'Finder' you can configure it to not allow burning CD's etc, and also control access to specific apps.
The only problem with this is that it restricts access completely and does not allow for the entering of an Admin id and password which, I think, would not do what you are meaning. You could also go down this route by setting up a seperate account with all these restrictions which you log into when you leave your machine alone so allowing people some access to your computer but not to your account.
Have you thought about just locking the screen by requesting a password when the machine wakes up or for closing the screensaver? (These are set through the Security preferences pane.) If this is what you want to do then remember to disable automatic login if it is enabled.
If you could give some more details about your specific use that might help with getting an approriate answer.

ps There may be some apps around that can do this but I am not currently aware of them. Other people may know of some.

Using Disk Utility, I select the disc image that contains the data that I want to backup to a DVD and select Burn. The program asks that a blank DVD be inserted.  When I do that, no format pop-up appears as is indicated in the Help instuctions.  If I procede with the burn, there is no password protection.  Before I converted to Lion, I used to use Disk Utility to burn backup DVDs without any problems.

AFAIK, you create an encrypted disk image and burn that to DVD. There's nothing else to do, but I might be mistaken.

  • Password Protect CD s or DVDs

    Hi Toddtastic,
    Welcome to the Discussions!
Personally I use a very quick and convenient feature in Disk Utility:
    Disk Image Encryption.
It doesn't prevent running the CD or DVD, but there is no way to open any of the files in it without entering a password.
    1) Put all your secret files in a folder
    2) in Disk Utility, go to menu File > New > Disk Image from Folder...
    3) Create an encrypted image of your folder
    4) Put the encrypted image on the CD/DVD.
It's this CD/DVD that you now burn, so that its contents will be available only to the password owner.

  • Is there a way to password protect a movie?

We have imovie in our school. We were looking to password protect our movies so other students could'nt tamper with them. Is this possible? If so how?

Have the students create a Sparse Disk Image, This also prevents fragmentation of the project across your disk. Set the target size at about what your intended goals are. Here I show Custom 20 GB.
Disk Utility>New Image>set the dialouge boxes as shown.

Sorry the format should have been Sparce Disk Image and not read/write disk image on the botton drop down list. A read/write will always remain the size you select in custom.
After the steps shown you will be required to type in a password and verify it. Before each use they would have to mount the disk image with thier password and when the movies is complete it will only take up the actual space used.
With MPEG-4 you can also protect your completed movies in various ways to be able to share it over the internet, DVD and prevent the content from being saved, copied or even viewed elsewhere as well. Some tools are available and it is my understanding that you can "create" your own. Contact Apple directly and they may be able to direct you to some educational resources for MPEG-4 IPMP-X or DRM software.

  • Password Protection of Movie Clips

We are making instructional movies for students and would like to put all the movies on one dvd. However, we do not want the student to be able to proceed to higher level instruction until they have satisfied the requirements of the current level. Is there a way to password protect each movie on the dvd so that the instructor can give the student the password when they have satisfied to the requirements to proceed to the next level?

I'd think you really need to contact Seagate Tech support for an answer. Briefly looking at their web site (which is horribly outdated - for those drives they only mention G4 and G5 Apple machines), it looks like the security feature does indeed require a BIOS, and is not available with an EFI firmware machine.

Any Mac running OSX 10.7 or later is going to have a partitioned drive.  It is how the system is set up to work without a installer DVD.

  • Locked / Password Protected iMac G5

    Hello,
I am currently a Windows user and recently upgraded to Vista. I was very unhappy with Vista, and I am currently looking for a used Mac on eBay.
I found a cheap iMac g5, but it stated that it had 'No OS' and it was 'Password Protected'. By installing OSX Leopard, would I overcome the problem?
The site for the iMac is http://cgi.ebay.com.au/APPLE-IMAC-G5-PROCESSOR-19-1-8GHZ-160GB-512MB-DVD-RWW0QQitemZ200268187414QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item200268187414&_trkparms=39%3A1%7C66% 3A2%7C65%3A1%7C240%3A1318&trksid=p3286.c0.m14
    Thank you.

Personally, I would not make an eBay trade with a Mac seller who lists a Mac as "faulty" because it's password-protected. This sounds like the open firmware password, which is not a fault - it's a deliberate security feature set by a user to prevent other users from rebooting the computer from another copy of the OS, or the reset disks. This means that you won't be able to install Leopard. However, any good Mac technician can tell you how to remove the password feature.

  • Open Firmware Password Protection?

Anyone had any luck setting this up? I don't see it on the DVD... I am hesitant to use the one from my Tiger CDs... anyone know how to setup Open Firmware Password Protection on Leopard?

Thanks for detailing your solution Mac Campbell.
Unfortunately I can't locate the Firmware Password Protection application in the directory you listed nor any other folder for that matter. I'm not confident its been installed on my system (clean install of Leopard btw). Could you please confirm its exact location for this Terminal newbie.
    Many thanks in advance.

  • Firmware Password protection = slow firewire speeds

i've been trouble-shooting a seagate freeagent fw800 external drive which is suffering from abnormally slow read speeds when connected to my macbook pro. i tested it with Drive Genius's Benchtest - around 8mb/s. the drive works fine on my imac, so the drive isn't at fault.
after much head-scratching, i remembered that i have firmware password protection switched on, so i just turned it off with the 10.6 dvd and retested the drive, and it performs normally (around 40mb/s).
i've not found any mention of this issue apart from one post from 2 years ago:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=8448187
so now i have to choose between a safer mac, or decent read/write speeds for my audio multitracking work. great. its not exactly convenient having to turn FPW on and off via the dvd...
anyway just thought i'd mention this for future baffled searchers.
reported it as a possible bug to apple too.

This should allow you to reset the root password
    1. Restart your MBP while holding down Apple/S
You will see a bunch of scrolling text, when that stops
    2. At the Localhost% prompt type:
    */sbin/mount -uw /*
    /sbin/SystemStarter

You will then see the services starting up.

    3. When the Localhost% prompt reappears, type:
    *passwd root
*
It will then ask you to type the new root password twice
    4. After entering the new password, type:
    reboot
    5. Login as root with your new password and proceed from there.

  • How can I protect my data in numbers from unintentional user of my iPad by other family members? In other words, how can I password protect my numbers and other apps from apple computer company?

I have other members of my family use my iPad for educational/recreational use, young children who may want to play kid games. I don't want them to accdently get into my data stored in the three business apps from apple. I would like to password protect these files.
I would also like to log out of the email systems that I use, so some one else can use this device to access their own emails. By leaving my accounts open al the time, is really asking for trouble from a host of sources.
I can't believe that the iPad is not designed to protect the privacy and data from prying eyes ... Un intuitional as it may be.
Please fix this issue so I create my info on this device and enjoy it fully. Or tell me how I can protect my data.
    Thnax.

Thanx for your response. Any data stored anywhere should be able to be protected from stealing, malicious destruction or unintentional destruction. Theo ad an be stolen and without any kind ofpassword protection, the thief could get into your sensitive data.
If Apple wants iPad to become a business tool that can be used with ideas, thots, data protected, then Apple needs to provide this protection to it's customers. Now it's unto the users to use it or not.
I know iPad is being considered to be used by doctors, and can u imagine the confidentiality requirements of HIPPA rules... It will make this device not usable without data protection. I am sureweall have heard about hacking going on at all levels. It's surprising that this device's software is left unprotected.
My iPad may be sitting on my desk and my 3 year old grand daughter would pick it up and start "playing" with it. That means I can't store anything on this machine that may possibly be changed.
I have discussed this with specialists in apple stores, and those who have been around info technology understand my concerns and they may forward this request further up. They do not have the answer for it..... So far.
I think data security should be everyone's concern... Be it a one person device or multiple user device.
I hope that some responsible people at Apple would read this and provide the protection that will make this device lot more acceptable in the business world.

    I'm using Numbers version 3.2.2.
Suddenly I cannot access my password protected Numbers file with the correct password. I have the correct password written down so I know I haven't made a mistake.
The response box that pops up says that the file cannot be opened. There are no other options for me to choose from.

Also, I tried to open it through an older version of Numbers but it sent this error message.
