Password protect non .mac iweb site?

I publish to a non .mac server (ie, I do not use .mac). I would like to password protect a subsite within my existing iweb site (the main site is public and the subsite is for members only) I know that the password protect feature in iweb is meant for .mac accounts but is there a way for me to work around that and password protect my subsite?

You would have to check with your host. For example, GoDaddy handles it this way:

  • How to password protect non .mac web site

does anyone have step-by-step directions on how to make my web page password protected on a non .mac web space?
    for example, http://www.yoursite.net/~userid
My internet service provider does not support web page creation, they just provide the space.
The only thing they said was the path to my directory is /rmgrazi/public_html/ and I should create my index.html file inside the public folder. I've tried creating and uploading a .htaccess file in the public folder, and then putting a .htpasswd file in my root directory /rmgrazi/
This doesn't seem to work. Any advice appreciated. Thanks.

Thanks for your help -- I'm not an expert by any means -- this is my first website... just wanting to put up a family website to share with friends & people I know.
    OK, the url is http://www.hickorytech.net/~rmgrazi/
Right now I just have a blank page up that says "test website"
My .htaccess file is located in /rmgrazi/public_html/ (yes, I put it inside the public folder in order to password protect my whole site).
By the way I'm using TextEdit in OS X, so when I upload the original file with Fetch, it looks like htaccess.txt -- after it's uploaded (as text, not binary of course) then I simply change the name to .htaccess
My .htaccess file includes the following:
    AuthUserFile /rmgrazi/.htpasswd
    AuthName Members Area
    AuthType Basic
    Require valid-user
Then I uploaded the .htpasswd one level up to /rmgrazi/ like it says in .htaccess.
The text in this file is just one line with my username:password (the password is written in code). I found a website that does this automatically. Then I just cut & paste it in apple+v
I tried using the Terminal application in OS X panther to see if the server path needs to be longer -- I logged into my ftp.hickorytech.net and entered "pwd" -- that command is supposed to show the server path. /rmgrazi/public_html/ are the only folders I can see. "/" is as far back as it will show.
In Fetch I can change the permissions for .htaccess and .htpasswd by clicking Get Info -- I tried all different combinations, 644, 711, etc... Maybe my permissions are set wrong?

  • Password protection of my iWeb site

I would like to password protect my iWeb site hosted on MobileMe - a single password for the site is fine so I think it is doable. However, I have had problems when publishing directly from iWeb so I use Cyberduck which seems to work well. Can I apply a password to my site when publishing thru Cyberduck? To be clear, I publish to a local directory and then drag and drop to MobileMe via Cyberduck. Can anyone offer advice to help with this?
    Thanks
    Duncan

You need to publish direct from iWeb for password protection and a few other features to work.
Also, its not necessary to use Cyberduck to upload from a local folder. All you need to do is upload by drag and drop to Finder/Go/iDisk/My iDisk/Web/Sites.

  • Password protecting the MAC?

How do I password protect the Mac? I want to leave programs running in the background, but password protect it so no one can hop on my computer while I'm away.

I asked the same question here be4. Here is a solution:
    http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20050706194219822
This method adds a lock icon to the menu bar instead of using hot corners to trigger the screen saver. I found this way works best for a lazy man like me.:)

  • Can I set up a password protected webpage within my site? CS4

Can I set up a password protected webpage within my site? I'm using CS4 and would like to create an orphaned page for internal use only.  Is there any way you can set up a password protect on one page within an otherwise public website?
Any help would be much appreciated.
    Cheers

The simplest way to achieve this would be to enable password protection for a certain subdirectory by using .htaccess. As long as you / your provider is using apache as web server this can be setup within minutes, all you need is a ftp client (plenty of freeware ones out there),
and here's a tutorial on how to do it: http://www.javascriptkit.com/howto/htaccess3.shtml Google will list many more if you search for "htaccess password"
Or, send your provider an email, he might be willing to do it for you, maybe even for free, since it doesnt take more than 5 minutes to set up.

  • Links to slideshow stopped working on non .mac published site

I was helping my friend redo his website in iWeb. It was previously done in iWeb, and worked fine when published to a folder and uploaded to his verizon account.
Today, when we exported and upload none of the links on the photo gallery pages worked. Clicking a photo to enlarge it found a broken link, and the slide show stopped working too.
I thought I forgot to do something, so I uploaded the old version of the site. That stopped working, too.
    Am I missing something?

The Apple slideshow (the one built-in to iWeb) using the photo template is supposedly one of the ".Mac-only" features of iWeb. It uses some resources off the .Mac servers, so it probably won't work when the pages are hosted on other non-.Mac servers.

  • Can i password protect pages in iweb?

id like to be able to do it with a username and password that i can issue to select people..

Not in iWeb. You have to do it at the server side.
Depending on where you host, you can password protect a site (a folder or directory) or a page.
See your control panel where you host your site.
Or you can do it yourself with a .htaccess file :
    http://www.google.com/search?q=password+protect+website+htaccess
    Here's a basic login :
    http://home.wyodor.net/protect
    username/password are : root/root
Or if your server supports it, you can do it my way :
    http://home.wyodor.net/demoos/WebSession/

  • Using mobileme password protected galleries on iWeb

I have a bunch of galleries on my mobileme gallery; most of them are visible only by specific users. I would like to use them on a iWeb (password protected) web site but the option Insert-> MobileMe Gallery is only available for public galleries not for password protected ones. Is there any workaround for this?

You could try embedding a Gallery in your iWeb page — see this old thread:
...or you could hyperlink from an iWeb page to a Gallery.

  • Is There a way I can make a free password protected website with iWeb?

I am a mac kind of person so is there a way I can make a free passcode protected website with iWeb? I knwo you use to be able to do it with MobileMe, but that's outdated now so could someone please help!

No, you cannot password protect a website with iWeb.
And no, you don't have to be a Mac kind of person either.
So how do they do it?

  • .mac iWeb site with yahoo domain- much trouble

I have 5 websites made with iweb hosted by .mac.
I just got a yahoo domain name, (organizedmayhemmusic.com).
I want to set that domain name to only one of my sites within iWeb,
but I'm having allot of trouble. Right now I have my yahoo domain settings
set to a masked forward, but I'd like it to work how I originally intended it to.
Which would be when you go to (www.organizedmayhemmusic.com) it shows my iweb site
without any weird stuff or tricks or redirects, if possible. Under yahoo Advanced DNS Settings
I added a record, and it asks for a source, and destination. The source example was
info.thesitename.com. but I don't want any thing in front of it, I'm actually still confused on
all of that. I ended up setting the source to (www), and the destination to (web.mac.com).
Then I created the settings on the .mac account page for a personal domain. And after I typed in
my address it got me to (www.organizedmayhemmusic.com/OrganizedMayhem/OrganizedMayhem.html)
Its my iweb site adress but it replaced web.mac.com with my new domain name.
I want it to be just (www.organizedmayhemmusic.com) and worst of all you can type my other
site/page names after (www.organizedmayhemmusic.com/) and get to my other sites but with
my new domain name in the address. If anyone has any help to offer I would greatly appreciate it.
I never ask for help unless I'm pretty desperate. Thanks in advance, -Terodil-

If anyone has any help to offer
Your choices are to go back to forwarding/masking or move your site to Yahoo.

  • How can I offer individual password protected pdfs on my site.

I am building a site for a client of mine.  His business is a music talent agency.  He would like that on the page of the individual artist, there be a link to download a pdf that only that artist can download if he/she enters a correct password.  I think from reading other posts that I can simply offer a pdf download link and have that pdf password protected when I initially create the pdf itself in adobe acrobat.  Are there other ways of doing this or is that the best route to go?  All responses appreciated.

    Hi,
For protecting PDFs, I am afraid you do need Acrobat, and here's how you accomplish applying password protection: http://tv.adobe.com/watch/acrobat-tips-and-tricks/protecting-your-pdf-using-a-password/
With this approach, you may have to reassign unique passwords to PDFs and ensure right passwords are communicated to the right people (there is not sign-in option) - that may be a bit of challenge.
Alternatively, with some basic scripting you could allow right people to download the right PDFs. This will need some mapping at the DB level.
Or, you could also leverage social media and use the OAuth mechanism to ensure that the users log in via social sites to download PDFs that are unique to them. Look forward to your thoughts.

  • Password Protect (Boot) Mac Mini

Is there a way to enable a Boot Password on the Mac Mini (2010)? O/S is 10.8.2.
    Thanks!
    Ron

Boot into Recovery by holding down the key combination command-R at the startup chime. Release the keys when you see a gray screen with a spinning dial.
When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select Utilities ▹ Firmware Password Utility from the menu bar.

  • Password protected script in iWeb??

    Hello there,
we are very new to this web site publishing so bear with us. Have successfully published a site (not a .mac) previously, then upgraded to 08 iLife. Now, the second site (not a .mac) will upload but we cannot view it as it is asking for a password. After speaking with the sites people, they say it is a problem in the body of the files in iWeb. Does something need to be switched off? We have tried everything to get this working.

If anyone has any ideas it would be very much appreciated. Thank you kindly,
    plasticfree

Yes, everything done right. No password there. We are saving to a folder and ftp to a host. Then this password deal. Very strange.... now we are going to re-do that website files into another format, just to see if there is some glitch with the design???? We have tried everything. Next step is to do a new website on the old PC. LOL
    Thank you for your input,
    April

  • Podcasts on Non-.mac hosted site

Anyone have a good link to instructions on how to do this?
    Thanks in advance!

One other thing to add about uploading a podcast to a site other than .Mac.
If you are using a redirect URL for your site (the kind you might get from Register.com or Godaddy.com), you have to use the host site name.
Example. I have a website that has tons of extra bandwidth. In my case it's wyethdigital.com. So my friend and I want to do a podcast, but we want a different domain name (in our case, howtogirl.com). We buy the domain as a redirect URL that points to wyethdigital.com.
When I use iWeb to publish a podcast or blog (anything with an RSS feed), I publish to a folder, and a dialogue comes up asking for the URL of the RSS host site. I have to enter wyethdigital.com because the redirect URL is basically only a frame, and there is no such site.
