Password protected document created in Acrobat XI (Mac) can't be opened by Reader XI (Windows)

I have a document that I created and password protected using Acrobat 11.0.2 (Mac).
I can open it with the same password using Reader 11.0.2 (Mac) but not Reader 11.0.2 (Windows).  On Windows I get an "invalid password" message.
Anyone else found this?

I can tell you in my testing that my results were consistent regardless of whether I typed the hyphen at the keyboard or pasted it in from a text document.
So, that still leaves us with "is this a bug?" or "is it a prohibited character?"
Obviously, in these days of concern over password strength, it is important to understand the range of available character set, so we can select effective (and legal) characters and not have to deal with the trial-and-error of trying to learn which characters to avoid.
I am also still confused as to why the exact same password, entered in the exact same manner succeeds on one platform and not another.  Unless the input dialog is silently converting the character (which I think could only be diagnosed with a debugger), results should be consistent.  After all, the "P" in PDF does stand for "Portable".
Do you have the resources to try and reproduce my test case?  I would be curious to know if the problem occurs both ways or just Mac->Windows.

  • Acrobat XI Pro for OSX can't open password-protected pdfs created using Acrobat 9 Pro for Windows

I am having problems opening password-protected files created on a PC using Acrobat 9 Pro.  I am running a MacBook Pro OSX 10.8.4 with Acrobat XI Pro.  When I attempt to enter the password when prompted, a dialogue box pops up saying that I've entered the incorrect password.  After many attempts, I am certain that the password entered is correct -- this is reinforced by the fact that i am able to open the same document using Mac's Preview software.
    Any assistance would be appreciated!
    Thanks.

I was suddenly having the same problem in Acrobat XI Pro for Windows (recently upgraded to CC from Acrobat X).  For the past while I've sometimes had to use the "insert from file" tool to get a page added from another file.  I couldn't figure out why dragging sometimes would no longer work, but was too busy to go looking for a solution until tonight.
The solution was given by JoshTatum24 above. Switch from a scrolling page display to single page display.  Now I can drag pages between documents again.  THANK YOU Josh!
Oh, and CORREAdmin,  it does not matter whether the hand or arrow selection tool is active, my mouse pointer is always an arrow when positioned in the page thumbnails panel.  Switching selection tools does not make a difference in dragging, but switching between scrolling and single page display definitely DOES make the difference.

  • Form created in Acrobat Pro 9 not able to open in Reader 8? Help!

I created a form in Acrobat Pro, version 9 and enabled the extended features so that the user in reader is able to save the document after filling it out. The only problem is that it seems that the document can only be opened in Acrobat Reader X because when opened up in earlier versions of Reader, it asks to be upgraded in order to fill in the form. Is there any way of "saving down" the file so that people can view and fill out the form who are using Reader 7 or 8 or 9?
    Thank you in advance.

Thank you for your reply Torben. When I export the pdf after adjusting the settings in pdf optimizer, I have "discard form fields" unclicked, but it still flattens the form fields and so that was the reason I did not save down and make compatible with version 7 or later.
Any other suggestions? There must be a way to make it compatible while keeping the form fields.?
    Thanks in advance!

  • Can't password protect documents

A year ago I bought a  license for Adobe Acrobat Standard which included access to certain features including the ability to password protect documents.  Suddenly it has stopped working.  I have already re-downloaded my product version and that has not solved the problem and can find nothing online to help.  Any suggestions or solutions will be appreciated.

    Hi noswam123,
If a PDF file is password protected, the only way to open that document is with the password. You will have to get that password from the person who created the PDF.

  • Can I allow commenting on a password-protected document?

I'd like to publish a book online and so want to at least password-protect it.    From what I have read, this precludes "Enable For Commenting".
Is there a way to publish a password-protected document but have the users still be allowed to attach comments of their own (for their own use) ?
    Thanks,
    -Ed

As soon as I enable commenting, the "encrypt with password" option is greyed-out so I cannot perform that action any more. Is there another way to encrypt it once comments have been anabled?
I am using Acrobat Pro Version 9.2.0 on a Windows 7 machine.   I open a PDF with it, selectComments > Enable for COMmenting and Analisys.    Then Advanced > Security > Encrypt With Password is greyed out (was not prior to enable comments).

  • Adobe Reader not recognizing the (correct) password on a password protected document

I have been opening password protected documents with Adobe Reader for months. My client just changed the password, and now, using the correct new password (I'm positive it's the correct password because I can open it on other computers, and no, my caps lock isn't on, and I've tried numerous times so it's not that I'm typing it incorrectly), Adobe is saying that the password is incorrect. Any ideas? I was thinking perhaps because I am on a Mac, or maybe because I have Adobe Reader and not the full version it isn't working... any help much appreciated!

Reader should be fine. you don't need to full version to open password protected documents and a Mac doesn't make any difference either.
Fist thing to be sure of is that it's actually Reader opening the docs and not Mac Preview (or something else).
If it is, maybe try having them assign a different password. A more simplistic one just to see if you can open it.

I bought a used Mac. The apple certified store navigated my old drive to the new machine. Now office wants the key. I save the key in a password protected document in Word so the old select the document hit the space bar doesn't work. Any ideas?

I think you need a different company's forum:

Not a lot of Office users reporting in here, whereas the MS forum I linked is very active and you may get help directly from an MS Mac Business Unit employee. Great place for Office issues.

  • How do you know the password to a password protected document?

I was e-mailed my son's weekly spelling words, but when I went to open them it said they were password protected! They have never been protected with a password. It's only a spelling list! I tried my email password...didn't work! The teacher has never mentioned anything about a password. Did I accidently set a password to protect documents somehow, somewhere that I wasn't aware of?

Adobe Reader cannot set a password on a PDF, so it's not you accidentally setting the password.
Only the person who created the PDF can tell you the password.

  • Printing a pdf document created in Acrobat Pro 9.0

Solved the problem of printing a pdf document created using Acrobat Pro 9.0 with SL - tried many different things form adobe etc and by accident discovered while in Acrobat you have to select ADVANCED in Print then click onto SAVE AS IMAGE in next box and then OK and all prints as it should. Just thought others may want to know this if they have had problems 1

I'm reviewing your post and while I see a fix, I can't locate the problem that you may have originally posted. Since I'm having issues, I'm hoping your's were the same.
Sometimes when I print an Adobe Acrobat 9.0 document, most of the printed word fail to print out (although they are in the PDF document). Almost all graphical elements print and the occasional line of text--but most text is missing. Was ti your issue?
    Thanks.

  • Others can't open documents created in Acrobat X

I'm wondering if anyone else has this problem and what I need to do to fix it.  I have both Acrobat 9 and Acrobat X on this computer, but I've had to roll back to using Acrobat 9, because only about half the people I send .pdfs to can open the ones created in Acrobat X.  Everyone can open anything in Acrobat 9.  Most of the people have Windows computers, but some have Macs.  All have fairly up to date readers, though no one with an iPad or iPhone can open them.  I haven't set anything different on the permissions or meta settings.  And I've even delivered the files on disc to one person in case it was something in the e-mail attachments.
    Any ideas?
    Kim

Thanks, but where do I set that up?  My normal method of creation for a .pdf is to open Acrobat X and hit Create .pdf, generally from a file or Scanner.  When I print a file, I print to Adobe .pdf
    I have iMac 27 64 bit Snow Leopard (10.6), and Acrobat 9 and X.
Method of PDF creation-Open Acrobat X and Create PDF.  Generally from a file or often from a scanner, but doesn't matter.  If I create the PDF in AcrobatX, they can't read it.  If I create the PDF in Acrobat 9, they can.  If I create the PDF in X, but then re-open it and SAVE AS in 9, they can.

  • Password protecting documents?

Note: If this is in the wrong section I do apologise, I wasn't sure where to put it so opted to take it to the hardware section.
In a nutshell, is there a way to password protect documents or folders? I'm working on an iMac G4 and I was wondering if there was some way to do this or whether it was possible at all.
    Thanks!

    Hello Lynn-Marie:
There is freeware/shareware that will protect files/documents. Try a Google search and see what appears.
The only program I ever used was "secret folder" from Apimac:

  • How do I recover the hint for a password protected document

How can I find the "hint" for password in a password protected document?

To my knowledge, there is no provision for access to a password hint in a Pages document. That's why you keep a separate, but secure offline document with your document name and password right? Otherwise, you have joined the ranks of those that are simply out of luck, after forgettting their document password.
