Password protected - how do I get back in?

I have somebody else's MBP which is password protected from the Boot-Up screen = the name of the Owner appears, of course, but I do not have the password. This is probably a OS X question too, probably - but
How do I get in there? Can I use Target-Disk mode and get in there and extract the files I want?
Perhaps that's too easy - then anybody can get in, right?
Is there a safe, proper work around to get past the password? I need to be able to extract the files before I go in there and delete everything and re-install.

Until today, on a particular site I access multiple times daily, the username was always present, until I checked box today, alway remember password. How do I get back to the username always present, without having to click the box?

I really want the username and password info to stay in the respective boxes without having to do anything to get them there, like they have been the last three years until today. (This is on a site I access multiple times daily, and is not a site having any security issues).

Double-click within the box, then for each incorrect user name, select it, and press "Del" key
(Mac users will have to use "Shift+Del" instead of just "Del" key)

Go to Settings>Store>Apple ID, tap the ID shown, sign out, sign back in using the alternate ID.

If you are able to Get Info on the folder of interest go the the very bottom section Sharing and Permissions.
You can gain access to this area by clicking on the lock in the lower right corner of the Get Info window.
Once you have input the admin password for the computer you should be able to edit the permissions on that file/directory.

You can't get it reset; if you could there would be no point in having it. If you have an encrypted backup there are two ways this could have happened:
You checked "Encrypt Backup" in iTunes at some time in the past, either intentionally or by accident
You have a corporate MS Exchange account and your Exchange administrator installed a security profile on your phone that requires the phone'a contents to be encrypted. This, in turn, requires the backup to be encrypted for obvious reasons.

The home screen says that it has been "disabled." When connecting to iTunes I am being told that I need a password to connect. My first iPad issued from work had some technical issues and it was sent back to Apple...as a result when I received my new one I backed everything up from iCloud, and never needed to synch it with iTunes for my use. I notice you are looking for solutions other than restoring, the article does outline how you can use iCloud's Find My iPhone:
If you have Find My iPhone enabled, you can use Remote Wipe to erase the contents of your device. If you have been using iCloud to back up, you may be able to restore the most recent backup to reset the passcode after the device has been erased.

Enter the correct password. It's the only way. If you can't remember it, you cannot use the backup. No way around this.
