Password protecting an airport network

My wireless network in my house is via an "old" airport base station (not "express", not "extreme"). I think it's the second generation model "Dual Ethernet" or "Snow." It looks like a small white alien spacecraft. It works great -- I access it via my old lime iBook and my new MacBook, and my husband accesses it via his old IBM/Clone and his new Futjitsu laptop.
We have never had password protection on the network, because, given where our house is, we didn't think anyone else could access it. But now, I'm pretty sure someone else is using it. So I'd like to password protect it. I can't do anything with the network from my MacBook -- it has to be done via the iBook. But I'm not entirely sure how to do it... someone else set up this network for me, and I'm so afraid I'm going to break the network and not be able to restore it. I've looked over the Apple advice regarding Express and Extreme, but I'm not sure the same info applies to my situation. I need really explicit directions. Any suggestions?

You can't use WPA encryption unless you are willing to update your iBook in a major way. But you could enter all the M.A.C addresses of the equipment permitted to join your network, or you could rely on WEP:

  • Password protecting a wireless network

I have just set up a wireless network in my house, it's a shared house and the aim was simply to have everyone else in the house connected to the same broadband connection and no-one else from outside using it.
I am using an i-book with Airport Extreme and used this to set up the wireless router. The router is a Belkin 54g Wireless Cable/DSL router connected to a cable modem provided by ntl.
Airport had no problem seeing the router and I set up a password on the router and WEP encryption with a shared key. My internet connection runs fine and my housemate who has a pc with a USB wireless adaptor also has no problems. The big problem is that I can not see how to password protect the network.
I'm sure I am being stupid and missing something obvious but when I connect to the network it just doesn't give me the drop down box to input a password and I can't find any instructions on how to get it or set up a pasword. We live in a terraced house and can see at least one other wireless network so I can assume that they can see ours and a the moment there is nothing to stop them joining it.
Please can someone help, I can't find anything on the Mac website, the Belkin information is entirely designed for PCs despite the fact that that the router itself is Mac compatible and advertised as such. I don't really understand all the security and encryption stuff but I just want to make sure that only people I give a password to can use our internet connection and that that connection is secure. I don't even know whether this password is something I set up through the router or through my computer. I'm lost.

If you have setup WEP encryption on the Router then you have already password protected the network. However I would suggest that you don't use WEP encryption as this can easily be cracked and offers a false sense of security. The only security worth using is WPA.
To enabled WPA log back into the router's web interface at http://192.168.2.1
Goto the wireless security and setup WPA-PSK
then the apply the changes. The next time you associate with your wireless network your mac should prompt you to enter a WPA password.

Did you have a question about an AirPort Express?
If you need help with a D-Link product, you should post your question on a D-Link support site like the one below:

  • Airport express does not see password protected airport network

When I try and password protect my Airport network, my Airport Express, set to join an existing network to play music on my stereo, can no longer see the network. I have my Airport Express plugged in via ethernet to configure it, and the Admin Utility shows a pop up menu for available networks to join, but this menu only shows my Airport network when password protection for the network is turned off. I never set my network to be hidden, so that's not the problem, and my laptop(s) can always see the Airprort network, regardless of password protection being enabled or not.
Supposedly you can select a password protected network for the Express to join and then it will prompt you to enter the password, but if it is not in the list then I can't select it. I can type in the network name, but again, it only joins if I turn off password protection for the network.
Is there a work around for this?
    -Lewis

Your express will need to see the SSID in order to connect. I would suggest that you temporarily turn off the security (WPA2) on your D-Link router, make sure it is broadcasting the SSID, and then see if the express detects it. If the express doesn't see it, make sure some other device can.
You also might try changing the SSID, or turning it off and back on and see if that helps.
Once you can see it in the clear, add the security, and be sure to enter it in exactly, be careful of capitals, etc.

Is there a way to password protect internet access?
Is there a way to password protect the Airport function on my mac?
I have spent some time looking at the forums and on the internet trying to look for a app that can solve my problem. I wish to be able to turn off internet access. I have been using K9 web protection but have found some flaws and bugs. It is a great idea and works well except for the "block any access between(set time) and (set time)" function.
I want to be able to use my computer with out the worry of access to the internet. In my simplistic ideas I need an app that will simply toggle the AirPort function on and off and password protect it. That way when i dont want the distraction in my own life and when i let the rest of the family are playing games the internet is safely protected.
At this time the ethernet connection is not a problem.
I can simply un plug the router however the neighbours around me don't password protect their connections!
If any one knows of a way to solve this or any alternative solutions please let me know.
Many thanks for reading and I look forward to your expertise.

If you enabled encryption on your network, make sure that you set up your base station or router properly. Consult the documentation that came with your product. Make sure you're using the correct settings and password. If you're joining a closed network, a network with its name hidden, make sure that you've entered the network name and password correctly. If the network is secured by access control, make sure that your MAC address is registered with the network administrator. Consult the network administrator for assistance with access.

  • Is there any way to set up an Airport Extreme that had been previously used in a password protected network and the password was not provided by the seller ?

    Background -
My original Airport Extreme Base Station failed (would not connect to the modem). I purchased a similar, if not identical base station on eBay. Unfortunately, the purchased base station apparently was used in a password protected network. For what it is worth, my son gave me a Netgear wireless router, but it leaves a lot to be desired. For one thing, I use to keep the cable modem in the basement along with the Airport base station, with a printer connected to the USB port. The Netgear device does not have a USB port and also requires that the computer (in this case, the eMac) used to set up the network be connected to one of the ethernet ports. This meant I had to move the cable modem and router into my bedroom, a very undesirable situation. It then occurred to me that the original Airport base station Wi-Fi function might still work, and tested this hypothesis and sure enough, the Wi-Fi function does indeed work I currently have both base stations powered on, with my printer connected to the original. Both base stations appear under my Network icon, but neither Airport Utility 5.4.2 or Airport Administrator Utility 4.2 see either base station. I can select the original base station as my network, connect to the printer or even my other computers, but as soon as I try to select the new one, it asks for the password. I would like to somehow reset this base station and then redefine the network name and encryption.

I would suggest that you perform a "soft" reset on the AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBS) that you just got from eBay. This type of reset will temporarily (5 minutes) disable both the base station and wireless security passwords so that you can access it with the AIrPort Utility to make the necessary changes.

  • Airport wont connect on my home network when its password protected but..

Airport wont connect to my home network when its password protected. It will connect to my network if i go into my linksys router and set the network to "not password protected". If i put on the security and choose a pass phrase it always says connection failed when i try to connect to the network. anyone got any suggestions on what to try ?
ps and yes i am putting in the password right

    Hi Nickerjones
When you enter your password for the Linksys router, is it generating a separate code phrase? By this, I mean if you enter "password", the Linksys converts this to a code that might look something like "ju457re76en7pq" for example. The code is generated based on an algorithm that Linksys uses for their products and should be visible in the set up page. Sorry, I haven't used Linksys for several years so I can't remember all the details.
Other manufacturers use different algorithms for their products, so if you entered "password" on an Apple product, it would likely convert the phrase to a different code, which the Linksys would not recognize. If you can locate the actual code that the Linksys generates when you enter your password and use that same exact code when you enter the password for your wireless on Airport, you may have your problem solved.

  • Password protecting a network

I just moved into a new house – a six-week sublet – and we’re using one of the apple wireless routers, but it’s painfully slow. It’s not password protected, so I imagine some of our neighbors are picking up on it. I’m sure the girls I moved in with don’t have any of the settings, passwords, etc. Is it still possible for me to figure out how to password protect our network?
    Thanks!
    Alec

    Hi Alec
Yes - you can administer the Airport base station using the Airport Admin Utility in your Utilities folder. Launch it, and it should detect the base station on your network. The base station itself (not the network) may be protected by a password. You can reset the password by soft-resetting the base station:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107451
Once you can access the station through Admin Utility, add protection to the wireless network as described here:

  • Trouble Connecting To Password Protected Networks

Hello. I'm having trouble with the wireless side of life.
I'm in Japan and I'm trying to connect to YahooBB wireless with my macbook. Everytime I enter the password, there is a message saying the connection has failed. I have also tried to connect wirelessly at work. I enter their password and I get the connection failed message. The only place I can connect is at the Apple Store which doesn't require a password.
Could there be a reason as to why I can't connect with a password protected network? I correctly enter the passwords over and over again.
Excuse me for such a silly question (I'm new to Mac) but...do I need to purchase Airport Express to connect at work or with YahooBB? I've always assumed there was no need.
    Thanks for your help.

What's the difference between hex and ASCII?
It is only how the information is presented. Humans can remember the ASCII string easier. The underying bits are the same. You can use tables like this one to convert back and forth between the ASCII characters and their hexadecimal representation.
If you can, the best wireless encryption to use is WPA2. If you can't use WPA2, use WPA.
128 bit WEP is very strong and adequate in most circumstances.
64 bit WEP (sometimes called 40 bit WEP) is very weak and should be avoided.
The type of encryption needs to be set on the wireless router (base station). Your Mac will then present you the correct dialog box to enter the password.

  • Password Protect Airport?

How do I password protect Airport?

To verify that your Airport Extreme or Express base station's network is encryted, open Applications>Utilities>Airport Admin Utility, select the base station and configure, enter base station password - on the "Airport" panel about three quarters of the way down you'll see: "Wireless Security: ....." and that will show your active method of encryption. WPA is best. If you also check the box "Create a closed network," no one will even be able to see the name of your network - not even you will be able to see the name when you are not connected, and to log on, you will have to provide the name as well as the password. To activate your selections, remember to update at the bottom of the panel.
    Edit-
Checked your previous threads and see that you don't have an Airport base station. I'll leave this post stand anyway, for others to read.

  • Password-protect Airport Snow as bridge on Time Capsule

I set up my new Time Capsule (removing the Netgear router) to my Comcast cable modem and eventually got all my Macs, PCs, and printers connected. I applied WPA encryption to the TC. I'd turned my old Airport Snow into a bridge so long ago that I forgot how to get into its settings. It allows one to connect to my network without a password. I want to rename it and set up password protection on it. Can anyone lay out the steps? thanks!

I'm not sure why you still need the Snow as a bridge if you are also using Time Capsule, but here goes:
Use a computer that either is connected wirelessly to the wireless network generated by the Snow or is connected via Ethernet to the Snow's LAN port. Launch AirPort Admin Utility (also called AirPort Admin Utility for Graphite and Snow). In the list of base stations that appears, select the Snow and click "Configure". Type in the base station password. (The base station password is not the same thing as the network password, which you aren't using.) If you have forgotten the base station password, reset the base station. (See Resetting the AirPort Base Station (Dual Ethernet).) In the AirPort pane of AirPort Admin Utility, in the bottom half of the pane under "AirPort Network" type in a new name for the network. Click "Change Wireless Security" and add a password. Click "OK" and "Update".
You won't be able to set up WPA security on the Snow; it only can use WEP (which is far from secure).
