Password protecting the MAC?

How do I password protect the Mac? I want to leave programs running in the background, but password protect it so no one can hop on my computer while I'm away.

I asked the same question here be4. Here is a solution:

This method adds a lock icon to the menu bar instead of using hot corners to trigger the screen saver. I found this way works best for a lazy man like me.:)

  • Is there a way to password-protect the Mail app?

I've looked through the Settings and didn't see anything. I know I can password-protect the entire device, but that seems like overkill.
Is there something I'm missing or even an app that would let me password-protect just the Mail app?

Seriously, if I want to hand someone my Touch, there's no way of keeping them from accessing my email? Why wouldn't there be a setting to secure your mail -- or, to paraphrase the ads, why isn't there "an app for that"?

  • Is there any way to password protect the ipad from syncing with a computer? Or Blocking it from a computer?

My brother borrows it and always adds music to it. I want to prevent this from happening.

Password protect the iPad and he won't be able to use it at all. Seems like the appropriate response if someone is using your belongings in a way you've requested they should not.

How much of a hurry are you in, and are you considering upgrading to Lion?
File Vault on Snow Leopard only encrypts home folders you select, and doesn't work well with Time Machine.
But Lion will have "full disk encryption" of local or external disks.  See File Vault 2 here: http://www.apple.com/macosx/whats-new/features.html

  • I cannot install mac os x snow leopard as i dont have the previous installation disk os x 10.5.8 and I cant remember the password for the mac. How can I install snow leopard.

Hi I have just received Mac OS X Snow leopard but when I tried to install it i couldn't as I have forgotten the password for the mac and I can't find the disk for OS X 10.5.8 its running on. Is there any way to install the new software without both of these?

you can reset your password. restart, and hold down Command-s before the apple logo appears (when the screen is white). you will see scrolling scripts until you see something like "root:" then type /sbin/mount -uw / to mount the disk. after that, type sudo passwd admin or whatever your admin password is. type in the new password two times. it doesn't show what you typed when you type the password so make sure you are pressing the right keys. after you done that, type exit to start up the computer. now you will be able to login with the new password.

Boot into Recovery by holding down the key combination command-R at the startup chime. Release the keys when you see a gray screen with a spinning dial.
When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select Utilities ▹ Firmware Password Utility from the menu bar.

  • How to password protect non .mac web site

does anyone have step-by-step directions on how to make my web page password protected on a non .mac web space?
    for example, http://www.yoursite.net/~userid
My internet service provider does not support web page creation, they just provide the space.
The only thing they said was the path to my directory is /rmgrazi/public_html/ and I should create my index.html file inside the public folder. I've tried creating and uploading a .htaccess file in the public folder, and then putting a .htpasswd file in my root directory /rmgrazi/
This doesn't seem to work. Any advice appreciated. Thanks.

Thanks for your help -- I'm not an expert by any means -- this is my first website... just wanting to put up a family website to share with friends & people I know.
    OK, the url is http://www.hickorytech.net/~rmgrazi/
Right now I just have a blank page up that says "test website"
My .htaccess file is located in /rmgrazi/public_html/ (yes, I put it inside the public folder in order to password protect my whole site).
By the way I'm using TextEdit in OS X, so when I upload the original file with Fetch, it looks like htaccess.txt -- after it's uploaded (as text, not binary of course) then I simply change the name to .htaccess
My .htaccess file includes the following:
    AuthUserFile /rmgrazi/.htpasswd
    AuthName Members Area
    AuthType Basic
    Require valid-user
Then I uploaded the .htpasswd one level up to /rmgrazi/ like it says in .htaccess.
The text in this file is just one line with my username:password (the password is written in code). I found a website that does this automatically. Then I just cut & paste it in apple+v
I tried using the Terminal application in OS X panther to see if the server path needs to be longer -- I logged into my ftp.hickorytech.net and entered "pwd" -- that command is supposed to show the server path. /rmgrazi/public_html/ are the only folders I can see. "/" is as far back as it will show.
In Fetch I can change the permissions for .htaccess and .htpasswd by clicking Get Info -- I tried all different combinations, 644, 711, etc... Maybe my permissions are set wrong?

  • Is there a way to password protect the NetInstall process?

I could not find this topic through the search function (correct me if I´m wrong) so I´m starting a new one here.
Is there a way to exclude users from accidentally clicking their way through the NetInstall process? In specific I would like to password protect it, without using third-party-applications if possible.

Hmm.. ..for me alone doing NetInstalls, this would not be a problem, but I need to ensure relatively easy Install procedures for less trained personal (Like start with "N", click OK, enter password, off you go..).
Has anyone experimented with modifying the System Restore Package inside the NetInstall .dmg? I´m not that experienced with .pkgs, but might this be a possible way? Some preinstall-script doing LDAP-authentification?
Or is there a way to add MAC-addresses to the Server Admin allow list via a script? Then I could configure one server as a "gate" with a NetBoot Set containing an account allowing the computer to start of a second NetInstall-only-server through a login script...

  • Password protect non .mac iweb site?

I publish to a non .mac server (ie, I do not use .mac). I would like to password protect a subsite within my existing iweb site (the main site is public and the subsite is for members only) I know that the password protect feature in iweb is meant for .mac accounts but is there a way for me to work around that and password protect my subsite?

You would have to check with your host. For example, GoDaddy handles it this way:

  • How do I password protect the external hard drive used for Time Machine backup

Can anyone help me to put password protection on the external hard drive I use to Time Machine backup my iMac internal hard drive?  I use Snow Leopard 10.6

I think that was FileVault 1.  Starting with Lion (10.7) Mac OS X uses FileVault 2, which is whole disk encryption.
Based on complaints seen in these forums, I would say FileVault 2's only complaint has been when people forget their password/encryption key (it seems an encrypted disk does prevent anyone without the password from accessing the data, including the real owner).  Otherwise it does not seem to be causing any serious issues.  Your Mileage may vary and objects are closer than they appear in your side view mirror (standard disclaimer).  Of course this is all academic while you are using Snow Leopard (10.6).
There are other whole disk encryption packages available, such as PGP Whole Disk Encryption, HOWEVER, I would not advise it for your Mac OS X boot disk, as it has been known to be a problem when you try to install operating system updates or upgrade to a new version.  NOTE:  I have not seen PGP Whole Disk Encryption discussed much, ever since FileVault 2 came along.

  • Is there a way to password protect the email accounts in my ipad?

I have private info in the emails, and sometimes i lend the ipad to my kids so they can play games or to someone to look at something with it.
I dont want them to be able to read my emails.
Is there a way to protect the emails account with a password?
    I downloaded the ios 6

Not directly no - there is this work-around which should still work on iOS 6, or you could see if any of the third-party email apps in the app store support a password, or just access your account via Safari (you can create a homescreen shortcut for your account's login page)
