Password rejection problem

Hi, I've been using my Mac for quite some time now but have always been unable to use Mail. Everytime I click 'get mail' a diolouge box appears and asks me to enter a password for my address, I enter the password and hit ok, a few seconds later the box reappears with the message 'The .Mac server “mail.mac.com” rejected the password for user “tymonemery” Please re-enter your password, or cancel.' I'm sure my password is correct as I use it for a number of other apps and logging in. I would really like to use Mail as I feel I'm missing out on the use of a Mac based mail account and have had to resort to using an internet mail service. I hope someone can help or shed some light as to what might be happening. Thanks in advance.

You're welcome.
I live in SBC's backyard and although I have friends who are and/or have been SBC DSL customers and SBC constantly tries to get me to change from Time Warner Cable modem service (RoadRunner) - after learning SBC decided to block the use of SMTP servers outside of their network not long ago without informing any of their customers beforehand, I changed my mind from giving them any consideration even though they are significantly less expensive than cable modem internet access. Generally, you get what you pay for.
All ISPs have temporary incoming mail server problems from time to time. Besides an occasional incoming mail server hiccup (usually early in the morning 2-4 AM, etc.), I've had zero problems with Time Warner and I've been a customer approaching 4 years. When SBC has problems, the problems always seem to be major and I'd rather pay more per month and not have to deal with or worry about the next major SBC problem.

Please can anyone help with the continuing password rejection problem with email on my imac.My Ipad and other systems work fine but despite reloading my password on imac it bounces back.Apple store has been visited and I have tried everything they suggest.

I use free Yahoo mail webMail access because folders I created in webmail access doesn't get set up in Apple Mail. While I was searching for post about password and keychain issues, I stumbled on several threads that complain about Mail folder issues, so I'm holding off on Apple Mail.
On the password and keychain issue that your post is all about.  I've been using login keychain to save and automatical fill my login screens for a year or so successfully, with Safari and Chrome. Automatic form fill also works for Facebook login. Unfortunately, about 4 to 6 months ago, automatic password form fill stopped working with Yahoo webmail, while still worked for GMail (Safari and Chrome). I tried deleting the password entry for my two Yahoo email accounts to start fresh, but neither Safari not Chrome will even ask me if I want to save the password. I was so frustrated that I eventually installed the keypassX 0.43 (password manager) that is quite primitive sompare to OS X's keychain (when it works). Probably no surprise to you yet.
The surprise, to me at least, is that, for whatever reason, password auto form-fill from keychain started working again for Yahoo webmail login on Safari about 5-7 days ago. Still doesn't work on Chrome!
Two tips I can share, at least with webmail access:
    1. Password is save only for one of my yahoo mail accounts. When I login in with my other yahoo account, I get no prompt to save the password, and form fill doesn't work when I try to log in a second time with my other Yahoo mail account.
    2. On inspection of my login keychain, I see a webform password item saved for my Yahoo account that works with keychain. The name of the password is: login.yahoo.com(MyAccountName1#). When I open the password item and look in the Access Control tab, I see Safari and Chome are listed as allowed to access this password item..
I also an "Internet password" item with a name of just login.yahoo.com. When I open the the password item, it looks just like the password item created for MyAccountName#1, but the MyAccountName#2 is listed in the Account field. Inside the Access Control tab, no apps are listed in access permission. I added Safari and Chrome to the lists of allowed app, saved the password item.
Now when I bring up the Yahoo login page(by bookmark) on Safari, form fill fills in MyAccountname#1 for name and the proper password and I can login in. When I change the name to MyAccountName#2, the correct password is retrieved and I can log in! Alas, it still doesn't work on Chrome.
BTW, I changed the password item type from "Internet password" to "Web Form password" and saw no difference! I also edited the name to be "login.yahoo.com (MyAccountName#2)" to look like the web form password item that works, but it has no effect either.
From my experimentation, here's my observation:
    1. A Web Form password item is created for the first account name(MyAccountName#1) for login.yahoo.com and typed as Web Form password. When I log in using MyAccountName#2, an Internet Password is created, but no applications are listed as allowed to access the password item, even when the password item was created after just logged in and logged out to yahoo with the account name and password for MyAccountName#2.
    2. Manually adding Safari as an app that is allowed to use the password item works. Doesn't work with Chrome!
The version of Safari I'm using is Version 5.1.7 (6534.57.2). My installed version of Chrome is Version 21.0.1180.79 beta.

  • Password rejection by POP server

I have been able to download my mail from this webmail based popserver on and of for several months, but since three weeks I have not been able to download any into Mail.
When I access the account directly over the web I get in without a problem.
    Thanks,
    Hans Visser

I have set it up as POP; I have the same problem accessing it from my IMac as well as notebook running Mail.
Today our network consultant at CMB HQ looked at my problem on my notebook; we tried several settings and somehow solved the password rejection problem. However, it still wouldn't download any messages.
According to these guys the problem is Mail itself; it seems to timeout before downloading can take place.
They also tried downloading with Entourage which worked without a problem. Unfortunately it seems I can't import my Mail mailboxes into Entourage so that would still not solve my problem
I asked the network consultant to get in touc h with the dutch network manager and request them to sought out with Aplle Netherlands.
Any comments or recommendation are wellcome, thanks.

  • Password rejected on apple mail constantly

I've called apple and at&t daily for hours to see if there is a solution. my password is constantly rejected. I put it back in and it's rejected a few minutes later again. Mail won't work until I put it in again. I use an airport extreme N connection to my dsl. Mail works on at&t's web site without a problem. I've reset my password. At&T says its a problem with apple mail, apple says its a at&t problem. My neighbor has exactly the same problem and gets the same circle. I've come to believe that maybe it is a amail problem. Anyone else have the same problem or a fix or should I just wait for a lepard fix, I hope. It even freezes my iphone wireless retrieval during the time I have to retype my password in the box.

I have been having a similar problem on our two Macs (iMac & MacBook) for a couple of weeks. I have at&t Yahoo! DSL and the password rejection problem really seemed to start with regularity when at&t changed their setting to require use of SSL on the specified ports. I have tried lots of things including repairing my Keychain, deleting and re-building my Mail account, and repairing permissions but I may have just stumbled onto a fix.
I think there may be a conflict between Mail's password authentication with the SSL and Keychain. I deleted all Keychains that had anything to do with at&t (POP, SMTP etc) and although it hasn't been very long, the tests I have done indicate the non-remembered password problem may be fixed. In the past when I tried deleting the keychains, I would always choose to have Keychain remember the password if the box would pop up. I think this may have been perpetuating the issue if indeed it is a conflict with Keychain. Don't know if it's a long term fix, but looks promising so far. If anyone else tries this and it works please let us know.

  • Apple password rejected

I had to replace my 1st Generation Apple TV with a used Generation 1, because my receiver has only component inputs.
When I try to enter my password, I get an error message saying my password is not correct (error -25)  The password is correct, but is not accepted.
The Apple TV is up to date on software.
    Any suggestions, out there?
    Thanks,

User Passwords Rejected on AFP share mounts?
(OK, my last post got buried, and perhaps too long), try again. Very brief
    Issue:
After so many days, a User's AFP share password is rejected? What gives.
If you reset it, several days later, same thing, rejected.
Is Netinfo Database corrupted, what can / should be done?
    - Stand Alone server (with AFP and FTP services running, all other services off, not running.
Summary Info for user having issue:
    Location: 192.168.0.50/NetInfo/DefualtLocalNode
    Home: No Home Directory
    Primary Group: Users (20)
    Password: Shadow Password
I have deleted that troublesome user name and created a new name (for that user), just in case, in the re-creation of the same user name (after deletion) some corruption gets inherited.

    Power Mac G5 Dual 2.0   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

Using Tiger Server, I have found that enabling ACLs, or Access Control Lists on the volume, and then specifying users and/or groups into the specific ACLs for the share point has been very helpful. Also note that 10.4.10 server seems to work better than 10.4.11, so if you haven't upgraded, don't go beyond 10.4.10. .11 seems to have some permissions issues and other problems.
I assume you are connecting to the server via AFS (i.e. Go > Connect to Server > ip address) and not SMB? SMB sometimes is more problematic about ownership. But either way, Mac or PC clients, it seems ACLs are the way to go.
Crazy as it seems, on my server, even if the owner is, say, admin, and the group with r/w permissions is, say, Prepress, it helps to specifically add the Prepress group to the ACL for that share. Then be sure to propagate the permissions down (unless you don't want to, for some reason). To do this, click the little gear icon and propagate all the permissions -- owner, group, acl, etc. down. This will take a bit of time depending on how much stuff you have. I also find that a server reboot can be helpful.
[[ All this said, 10.5.1 seems to do some crazy things, and I hope 10.5.2 addresses them. I have one machine (not user ID) that always creates a folder on a share with no permissions for anyone. Only from that Mac; the same login on another works just fine. Go figure]]

  • Mac OS 10.2.8. Connection Password rejected

    Hi Chaps,
Can you help me? I've got a BT home hub 2.0, which connects fine to PC laptops, and my iPhone (all wirelessly), and to a desktop fine via an ethernet cable,  but not wirelessly to my Apple Mac. The Mac is quite old - but a lovely shade of blue. It's a G3 Powermac running OS10.2.8 - which is compatible according to the information BT give on their website - with an Airport Extreme wireless PCI card installed.
Here's what happens: I can see the network I want, along with BT Fon and BT OPenzone in the task bar - so it's receiving all right. Buuuut when I try to enter the Key (the same one I'm using for the laptops and iPhone - so I know it's correct) the message reads "The password you entered is not Correct for the selected Airport Network".
    So far I've tried:
Inserting a $ before the password as recommended on other websites
Every combination of password including changing numeric parts to HEX
Changing TCP/IP settings to Ethernet, from Airport
Any and every combination of everything possible!
Another forum  suggests trying to change security to WEP. I've had no success - I cant see an option on my Mac to do that.
Clues? Suggestions? Cuddly toy to the winner.
    Thanks.

Moriarty, if you have further problems you might want to go to a fixed channel instead of the auto option - auto works fine in this house for Wife's PC laptop, PSP, iPhone but not iMac - password rejected, timed out is all I ever get until I fix the channel after a hard reset etc...
    Hope this helps.
    - Andrew

  • Mail 2.0.7 - Earthlink Passwords Rejected

    Hello,
I would appreciate any help anyone can give with this problem. My Mail app worked fine last night with my Earthlink accounts; today, I receive repeated "password rejected" messages. I checked with an Earthlink online rep who had me re-enter my account settings, so those should be correct, but it didn't fix the problem. My Entourage app gives the same "password rejected" message.
The Earthlink rep suggested that I remove and then add back the accounts in Mail, but since there's also suddenly a problem with Entourage, that doesn't seem right to me. In the past, this has happened intermittently but the problem seems to be more persistent this time.
Does anyone have any other suggestions I can try? Thanks in advance for your help!

  • Email password rejection

With extraordinary arrogance BT have closed a thread again before a problem has been solved. A considerable number of customers have been suffering for some years with perfectly valid passwords being rejected by BT Yahoo email servers. Some of us have been fobbed off with fatuous replies from all levels of support along the lines of -  it is your fault, your email client is at fault, you are accessing your mail through multiple devices and so on.
The following thread (started July 2011)  has been closed by a "Moderator" and I quote from his post
"Since this migration work was done we have completed extensive testing and no further issues with POP or IMAP have been found."
    http://community.bt.com/t5/Other-BB-Queries/E-mail-password-rejection/m-p/234061/highlight/true#M638...
Thread closed - problem solved. But it isnt, the same old thing is happening again this morning. BT is right and the customer is always wrong.

I guess we just have to keep starting a new thread! I emailed the mods after yesterday's closure saying I am still having problems, this is the third time of emailing them, they did answer my first one asking for more info but nothing since then. The pop ups are dreadful and if I don't close outlook I have to keep watching the screen if I am typing as my typing ends up in the password box of the pop up!!! The main irritation is that it affects my smartphone so when I am out on the move I cannot keep up with emails as they don't come through, the irritating password incorrect message comes up!!!. When they do (after logging onto btyahoo) we get all of them again. No probs with iPad. I want to ring BT but seems everyone has tried this so many times without success. It's such a shame, I don't want to leave BT, I have been with them since I ever had the Internet but this does make you start looking at other companies.

  • Email password rejection trouble

    On behalf of my mother!
Clients: iMail, iPhone iMail (set to Push)
    Protocol: IMAP
At first it was just the desktop Mail which rejected the password, now however it is both. I have logged into the Yahoo mail web application, which works fine. I also changed the password, however neither client works.
I am now aware that this used to be a fairly major problem (http://community.bt.com/t5/Other-BB-Queries/E-mail-password-rejection/td-p/234061/page/68) but that thread was locked months ago and this is a recent problem.
    Suggestions? Many thanks in advance.

    Hi CraigS,
I was surprised by your reply to BedeH as I have this afternoon been speaking to BT Yahoo tech support about the same or a similar problem who told me that rejecting passwords was still an open known fault that was being worked on.
My problem is running outlook 2010 under Windows 7 with 3 Btinternet email accounts. About twice a day apparently randomly Outlook will pop up on just 1 of the 3 accounts  saying the server has rejected my password and to reenter it. No matter what I enter it will not accept it. The BT Help program will eventually tell me the password is incorrect and give up. The work around I have been using for over 6 months is simply to login to my web based BTinternet account and immediately Outlook starts working again simply by clicking the pop box to retry. This is a frustrating pain and hence my follow up call to the Help desk.
I do have an iphone and an ipad both of which can access my mail but neither are set to "push".
I would appreciate knowing whether you (BT?) recognise this as an open problem or whether I was just being fobbed off.
    Thanks John

  • E-mail password rejection on Mac

I am adding my experience to the long list, just so that BT knows the problem is widespread and continuing. Yesterday and today, so far, I suddenly lost my BT Yahoo mail on my Mac with the now common password rejected message. I have no time to fix it so will use webmail meantime, but it just hammers another nail in the BT coffin.

Until April 2012 there were enough threads on password rejection to knit a large sweater but then the moderator closed the forum saying all was well.  It isn't.  I have been unable to access my bt mail since March except by logging on to webmail after which macmail behaves correctly for about 1 hour.  Wasted £30 on a premium BT help service on this matter. Very nice guy but perplexed!  This issue is not dead. I had the same issue with my iphone which was resolved in an Apple store. Is there now a fix for this utterly irritating situation? It does BT no credit whatsoever. Any chance of reclaiming my lost hours and £30? I think I know the answer to that one.

  • E-mail password rejection AGAIN

This wasaproblem a few months ago
    http://community.bt.com/t5/Other-BB-Queries/E-mail-password-rejection/td-p/234061/highlight/true/pag...
    All happening again today.
    I DESPAIR of BTOpenworld

Am also having exactly the same irritating problem as davrh (the original poster).
My configuration is Intel iMac, OS X 10.5.8 & Apple Mail 3.6.
Worked fine for about 3 years, then started rejecting passwords as below:-
The POP server “mail.btinternet.com” rejected the password for user “[email protected]
Please re-enter your password, or cancel.
Problem started about five months ago. I am using 3 BTinternet mail addresses within 2 Apple user accounts on the same iMac - all the BT e-mail addresses have the same problem.
Interestingly, a gmail account operated within the Mail client does not have the problem.
I have increased the time period for the Apple mail client to "check for new mail",  as an attempt reduce the number of pop-ups and relieve the irritation factor.
As passwords are set within in the Mail client account information, this should not be an invalid password issue.
I suspect it may be a timing issue on the BT Mail server side.
I had hoped the issue would be resolved with the new update of BT Yahoo - which is advertised as being 2 x faster.
    But it hasn't!
Really need a fix for this.

  • "Password rejected" revisited - again

Greetings. I have been getting the "password rejected" alert when trying to receive from a web-based POP3 email account "macmail.com" for a couple of weeks. (OS X 10.3.9; Apple Mail 1.3.1. SBC Yahoo! DSL is my ISP.) I have also tried several other email clients (CE QuickMail. GNUMail. Entourage). They all also reject my password. I can access my mail at www.macmail.com, or through www.mail2web.com.
I did a quick "telnet" session in Terminal this morning. Here are the results (with personal info x'ed out):

Can anyone tell me what is happening?
The real kicker to all of this is that GyazMail WILL!!! retrieve my email from "macmail.com" without even breathing hard, and with an identical setup as all of the other email clients. Also, my "sbcglobal" POP accounts work fine. I sent an email to the folks at macmail.com, but have received no response.

    Baron,
GyazMail gave up the ghost this morning. I emailed Goichi Hirakawa to see if he could make sense of the problem, He suggested holding down "Shift-Option" while I clicked the Send-Receive button, which would generate a Console log to compare with the telnet session log. As soon as I did that, I got the same "ERR Authorization failed" message that every other email client I've tried produces; and I cannot find a Console log either. The condition persists even after a complete uninstall-reinstall. Oh well. I guess I'll just have to use the web-based MacMail interface to retrieve my MacMail. (Have you seen this site? - http://www.mail2web.com/ )
I think MacMail is maintained by "robots". I've gotten no response from them at all. I think I too may let those addresses lapse. Fortunately, I don't have too many important contacts at Macmail.

  • Mail not working password rejected

After latest software update Leopard 10.5.8 Mail receives the message "password rejected" So I type it in and it still fails. I dumped plist file in Library, and tried keychain access repair thinking that maybe something was corrupted. Mail is still not working. My Mail account is through a local Internet provider. It is a POP account.

OK! I figured this out... and it's probably the dumbest thing I ever encountered using mail. Called internet provider and told them the problem. They looked at the account and said that I had exceeded the quota on the amount of mail on their servers. It created a "POP lock". Stupid...
Anyways the fix was to change preferences in the advanced tab. Instead of having copy's of emails stored on their servers for a period of time you can choose to do it right away, which I did. Which they prefer apparently. I can't imagine why they wouldn't want copy's of thousands of spam messages stored on their servers for at least a week, maybe longer. They kindly reset my account after changing the settings, thus removing the "POP lock" Works fine now. Thanks for all your help.

  • Constant password rejection in Lion, using iCloud

OK, so I've recently made the move to Lion and, around the same time, to icloud. Generally, everything is fine, but I'm experiencing this very annoying issue with Mail. Periodically, but frequently, I get a password rejection alert like this:
The iCloud IMAP server “p01-imap.mail.me.com” rejected the password for user “( my name )”
Enter your password again or cancel.
I do so, and it accepts the password. However it keeps coming back.
I haven't changed anything in my settings, but this alert suddenly started appearing, a few days ago. Even when I've ticked the box to save the password in my keychain, it still returns! I'm puzzled and irritated by this.
Has anyone any idea why this might be happening please? Thanks in advance for any insites.

Right, well, for a while it seemed to improve, but I'm afraid it's back again. So annoying. I never had anything like this with mobileme or Mail before. I ca'nt understand what might be causing it. Guess I'll have to keep looking into it. Right now, mail is practically unusable.
And now all my junk mail seemd to have evapourated from my imac, yet it's still on my ipad and iphone!
    Thanks.
