Password Required for Open Wireless Network

I'm participating in a meeting in Norway with four other people on laptops using a mix of WinXP and Vista. They all connected to an open wireless network without issue. On my MBP, I see the network, but cannot connect to it. Going through the "Assist me..." option in the Network Setup Assistant leads me to a form that invites me to enter a WEP Password. It says:
The AirPort network "BERGSTADEN BASE1" requires a password.
Please enter the type of wireless security and the network
password.
The problem is that no password is required (as confirmed by all my WinXP/Vista-using friends). I am at a small conference facility at a resort area and do not have access to the wireless access point.
Any idea how I can join the network?

When you are not connected to the network, go to the Airport menu (the icon near your clock). Hold down the option key, while you click on the Airport icon. Then move the mouse pointer down to the network in question.
If your Mac thinks that the network is secured, it will come up with a "tip" saying something like WPA or WEP.
Also, is it possible that you have connected to a network of that name before that required security? Go to System Preferences -> Network -> Airport -> Advanced -> Airport and delete the network from the list.
Then try to reconnect from the icon on your menu bar.
Cheers,
Rodney

My printer works through the wireless network, but my scanner doesn't recognize my computer.  I'm thinking I have a username/password issues.

I don't think that its user name and password issue .
As you Printer is working fine with your wireless network that means the router is communicating with the Printer .
For the Scanner check the settings on your printer itself for the Scanner function .

  • How do you set up a password for a wireless network when using an Airport Extreme?

How do you set up a password for a wireless network when using an Airport Extreme wireless router?

    Thanks for the updated information.
Open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
Click on the AirPort Extreme icon, then click Manual Setup
Click the Wireless tab below the row of icons
Check to make sure that the setting for Wireless Security reads either WPA2 Personal or WPA/WPA2 Personal
Enter a Wireless Password and Verify Password
Click Update to save any changes and wait a full minute for the AirPort Etreme to restart

  • 2nd Computer Requires a Manual Wireless Network Connection Setting on Powerup

2nd Computer Requires a Manual Wireless Network Connection Setting on Powerup
On power-up, my 2nd computer, a 3 yo IBM R51, requires that I open the Network Connections window, then set the Wireless Network Connection Properties under the Wireless Network Tab, clicking on "Use Windows to configure my wireless network settings", before the automatic connection launches to the WRT150N v1.1 router signal.
I just bought the router and have the latest firmware.
My primary computer does not require the above settings change every time.
Is there a selection I can make so this is automatic on power-up or restart of my 2nd computer?

It was already set to automatic on both extended and standard tabs.
For a good measure, I set it to disable, applied, then reset it to automatic and applied again. Still does same thing.
I notice that if I double click on the small icon for the Intel ProWireless Network Card, I get a Wireless Connection Status Window.
This window has a Wireless Settings section where it seems to have a possibly obsolete "Current Location Profile" called ssnetwork (the name of my old network on my old D-Link router that I just changed out for the Linksys.
Anyway, the Network Name (SSID) field is now blank but when it first came up, it had the new name of the network I'm using.
Do you know how I access this "Current Location Profile" so I can edit it and possibly enter my new network name?
There is a button at the bottom of the screen called "Modify WLAN Settings" that I click but nothing launches when I do so.
Now that I manually did the connection setting, my network name appears in the "Current Location Profile."

  • Password Required for Update?

My Airport utility says that there is new firmware available for my Airport Extreme 7.4.2 (I currently have 7.3.2) but when I try to update it asks for a password which I have no idea what it is nor do I ever recall using one with the original install. Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    JDB

    Welcome to the discussions!
When you originally configured the AirPort Extreme, you were asked to establish a Base Station or device password and also a wireless network password. AirPort Utility is asking for the device password.
If you did not establish a device password, the default is public
If that does not work, see if you can open AirPort Utility and then click Manual Setup. Click the Base Station tab below the row of icons. Enter a new password for your device and confirm. You might want to write the device password down.
Post back if you are not able to use Manual Setup on AirPort Utility.

  • Airport no longer connects to OPEN wireless networks

Lots of people seem to think that their airport keeps dropping the connection to OPEN wireless networks because of the 2008-001 airport update. That is probably only true for a Macbook 2,1 (aka Macbook Core 2 Duo).
I had the issue on my Macbook 1,1 (aka Macbook Core Duo). I wiped the system clean. Re-installed OS-X. Applied all updates BUT:
    1. Airport 2008-001
    2. Security update 2008-002
I also downgraded the Airport firmware to 2007-004 (aka version 1.1.9.3).
Technically speaking this should have resolved the issue but it didn't.
Why do I believe it should have resolved the issue? Because the same approach worked on the Macbook 2,1 and they both have the exact same Airport card.
Now I have no idea how to get it fixed - I think I have tried every possible way. There doesn't seem to be any way to contact Apple coz I don't have a support contract.
But hey, do I need a contract? Apple broke this for me ... they should fix this. I am about to post this as a tech article on engadget and other places because there are SO many people suffering from poor testing on Apple's behalf.
    Apple, please respond.
    Thanks.

Visited the "genius" bar this afternoon - what a trip!! The guy said this is a Verizon issue, period. I was like you must be kidding, there are SO many people out there who got affected and not everyone uses verizon ... he actually got pretty mad and said you should be using mac hardware (router) and secure network. I even told him my second Macbook is working fine on the same Verizon network. This is their new location in the Northern VA area at Fair Oaks Mall.
I would call that guy anything but a genius, what a waste of time. This was my first and last trip to a "genius" bar.
If anyone comes across any new ideas, please share.
    Thanks.

  • If i install my airport extreme using a pc, does that pc need to always be in the house for the wireless network to work?

Do I need to have the PC that I set up teh airport extreme with in teh house for the wireless network to work?

No. You would only need the PC to run the AirPort Utility if you ever need to make any configuration changes to the AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBS). You can even do that from a remote location. A computer is not required in order for other wireless clients to connect to the AEBS for network/Internet acess.

  • How to create a truly open wireless network on CT5760 controller?

    Hi
We have a 5760 setup and a mix of 3702 and 1142 access point.
But, no matter what I do, I can't create a really 'open' network... I mean a non-restricted, open wireless network. Like what you get when you buy a home 50$ access point.
Even after disabling all restriction, clients still can't connect directly to one another.
I need to create this SSID for an experiment in one of our labs and they want all their options open... including multicast...
So, my question is: Can I make a super smart network setup to do a simple wireless network?
    Thanks guys!
    P.S
I can't use any other equipment from various reasons... must do it with what I have...

    Hi all,
I tried your suggestions but unfortunately it is not working... after associating two clients to that SSID, they can't reach each other by PING. (which worked when both were connected to a simple home router).

  • How to change "No Password required" for Guest to "Yes"account under Somarsoft Dumpsec

    Check Content:
    Verify all accounts require passwords.
    Run the DUMPSEC utility.
Select "Dump Users as Table" from the "Report" menu.
Select the following fields, and click "Add" for each entry:
    UserName
    SID
    PswdRequired
    AcctDisabled
    Groups
If any accounts have "No" in the "PswdRequired" column, this is a finding.
Some built-in or application-generated accounts (e.g., Guest, IWAM_, IUSR, etc.) may not have this flag set, even though there are passwords present.  It can be set by entering the following on a command line: "Net user <account_name> /passwordreq:yes".

  • Onfigure a WAP54G to act as a repeater for my wireless network hosted by a Cisco/Linksys WAP610AP

How can I configure a WAP54G to act as a repeater for my wireless network hosted by a Cisco/Linksys WAP610AP
I am using ONLY 2.4GHz wireless band on the WAP610AP running Firmware Version 1.0.04
The signal from WAP610AP is weak in my home office and I would like to use the WAP54G as the repeater. Is this possible? If yes, please help!
    TIA

This statement is according to the WAP’s user interface: When set to "AP Client" and "WirelessBridge" mode, this device will only communicate with another Linksys Access Point (WAP54G). When set to "Wireless Repeater" mode, this device will only communicate with another Linksys Access Point (WAP54G) and Linksys Wireless-G Router (WRT54G). In a nutshell, the WAP54G may have a big possibility that it will not work on that device.

  • Requirements for "Open with Explorer" to work

What Roles and Features are required on the WFE servers? What ports need to be open? and what are the client requirements for "Open in Explorer" to work in SharePoint 2013.
Please note, this is a loaded question. I ask, because it works on our QA environment, but not on Production, and while I am not entirely keen on implementing it, I have been asked to. From what I have read, it would appear that it should not work at all
in our environment, so I am not sure if I am more concerned that it runs in QA or that it does not run on Production.
Any ideas would be most appreciated.
    Thanks,
       John

    Hi John,
I understand you need to make "Open with Explorer" work in SharePoint 2013.
Please verify the following and test on your SharePoint server:
    1.Desktop Experience feature is installed.
    2.Restart WebClient service.
3.Brower IE 8 or later is in 32-bit.
If not, please refer to the article below and restart your computer, then test the issue again.
