Password reset - computer now in trouble

first of all, I am just a REAL happy user, never have been a techie...but I can follow instructions and do minor fixes.
I forgot my main password so for a few months I have not been able to do any udpates. After checking with Apple and in the discussions, found out I could only reset it by reverting my MacBook Pro back to factory settings and starting over.   Well, I did that...and started a whole new set of problems.
System could not read any of my applications (Garage Band, iTunes, etc) because I had already updated with newer op system. AND I could not set my password, yet.
In trying to reinstall the OS X at the point of the system rebooting itself it FROZE and will not boot up now, even when I hold down the key.
oh yeah.... and I am waiting on a new battery - - my system is 4 years old and the darn battery warped on me in the midst of all this---new one on order.
I have no idea what to do first to get my MacBook Pro to boot up and accept the install of OS X, then reset the password so I can download updates.
Where do I start??

All is not lost yet.
You can force eject a stuck cd by holding the trackpad or wired left mouse button down while booting.
You can also hold the shift key down and that's Safe Mode, the machine might boot then. If you get in at anytime, grab your files off ASAP.
If you clean the bottom of the 10.5 install disk with a bit of rubbing alcohol and a soft cloth, polish to a shine you can stick it in and see if you can hold c and boot off the disk.
You might not be able too as I think Apple has issued a firmware update somewhere in 10.5-10.5.8 that makes it impossible to boot off the 10.5 disks. I know I can't do it on my older machine any longer.
If not then your going to have to buy the 10.6.3 Snow Leopard disk from Apple.
Also get yourself a blank, powered external drive. Not too large, 1TB is fine, don't go any larger really might have issues with 10.6.3.
Creating a Data Recovery external drive, attempt to repair internal drive
You hold c boot off the 10.6 (or 10.5) installer disk and then under one of the menus is Disk Utility, select that
On the far left select your physical internal drive, (example "500GB Toshiba 54957353M media") use this chance to Repair Disk, Repair Permisisons on the internal drive.
On the far left select your external physical drive (example "1000GB Seagate 7878787K media") and then click Erase > Security Option > Zero All Data and Erase, wait until finished.
Next you go to the Partition Tab and click the big box, 1 partition, Option: GUID, Format: OS X Extended (J) give it a name like MacIntosh HD 2 and click Apply.
Next you quit and install 10.5/10.6 onto the external drive. Once that's done reboot and hold the option key down, you can then select the external drive to boot off of.
Your next step is to go through the setup, use the same user name as on the internal drive, then log on and Software Update until your clear.
Next grab your files off the internal drive.
What you do now is your choice, you can erase the internal drive and install 10.6, your previous 10.5 programs should work under 10.6 using Rosetta, so make sure to install it.
If you can't see your internal drive, either in Disk Utility or while trying to get files off the internal drive, it could be dead.
But it also could be the Mac has a hardware or a loose cable issue.
Only by extracting the drive physically and using a IDE/SATA to USB adapter cable to another Mac can you tell if the internal drive is truly dead or not.
If you try to read a Mac drive from a PC, you need to install MacDrive first to read the HFS Mac format.

I'm trying to login to the support forums. I have my user name, rsmith79. What I thought was my password apparently isn't. I tried multiple times to get a password reset email sent to me but I haven't received one. And yes, I'm using the correct email address to request one. I was stuck having to create this new account. I want to get access to my old account. Please help.

Have we got a password reset feature now then ? <br />I had not noticed !

  • My screen on my iPad was lcoked..after trying password (which I though I was correct), I received message "wrong password, try again", now it is disabled..How do I reset?

    Hi,
My iPad has a password in order to unlock my screen.  Afrer a few tries with what I thought was the correct password, it is now disabled and every time I wait the amount of time to try again, it is still wrong and the time to wait gets longer...now at 60 minutes.  Is there a way to reset this?
    Thanks.

If you've forgotten your passcode, then you can remove it by connecting the iPad to the computer that you normally sync to and restoring the device : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1212

  • Reset ipad2, now keep getting iCloud box requesting password--but won't accept!  How to solve?

I have an ipad2 that was displaying about 20 greyed out app icons.  It took awhile (and User Manual was no help), but I finally concluded that these apps could not update--which was why I woulld see the caption change to "Waiting" under them when pressed.  Thought I should try to Reset all settings (not data) under the General tab, see if that would allow them to update.  Seemed to work, since all greyed icons disappeared.  But next time I turned on the iPad, I got an iCloud box, showing my email, asking for Apple password.  Typed it in, and it would not accept.  After several tries, got a "If you have forgotten your password, you can reset it" message, with "Reset" and "Okay" choices.  NEITHER worked.  Nor would trying to enter about a dozen other passwords that I commonly use.  Finally went to support, changed my password--which works on this Compaq laptop, and got me into this account.  But the new password also will not work for iCloud.  Nothing I can do seems to have any effect on the iPad, but when the cable is connected to this laptop, I do get the two-tone sound indicating plug in, disconnect.  Does ANYone have any suggestions as to how I can get rid of this idiotic iCloud message?  (If so, I will probably take the app OFF my iPad, just use it for Android phone, laptop, and desktop.  This is RIDICULOUS--and Apple should be addressing it.  (I seem to see other questions that are sort of the same.)
Please respond ASAP--need to take this iPad from Jackson Hole to Austin for three-day reunion on Wednesday, show some old pix on it!

There isn''t a "key" for "I forgot the password" to your wifi.  If you didn't set the wifi password on your router, it may be printed on a label on the back or side of your router.
If you are entering the correct password, but it is not being saved, unplug your router for 15 seconds, then plug it back in, the on your phone go to Settings>General>Reset and tap Reset Network Settings, then try joining your wifi again and see if the password is saved now.

    HI,
The Apple IDs from @mac.com and @me.com (Older MobileMe and more recent iCloud Names) are also Valid AIM Screen names.
Any other sort of Apple ID is not a Valid AIM Name.
A Google ID that is associated with Google Mail Account (And has "Talk" enable on your Google Settings) can be used in iChat as  Jabber Name/ID.  (Google Run  Jabber server).
Jabber and AIM are different IM Services and it is not easy or straight forward to add Buddies from one Service to the Buddy List of another.  (As A Starting point consider it "impossible")
iChat 4 and 5 have links to the registration page of @Mac.com here with a "Get an iChat Account" button in the add (Account) screen  (You select @mac.com or MobileMe and then press the Button - Choosing AIM and then pressing the button used to lead to the AIM registration page but AIM moved their page).
Apple IDs can be any valid email (or an @mac.com or iCloud registration)
Therefore you could make a Google ID into an Apple ID.
However this will not be a valid AIM Screen Name the way @mac.com or MobileMe/iCloud ones are.

  • Hi I have recently had my computer reset and now can't find my original playlist on itunes for my ipod how can I find this or how can I put my music from my ipod onto itunes

Hi I have recently had my computer reset and now can't find my original playlist on itunes, how can I transfer it from my ipod into itunes, or how can I find the original one?

Expanding on what The Fiend said, the license to play music from a CD is tied to and stays with the CD. So if you sell or give away the CDs, the license to play the music goes with them, at which point you legally no longer have the right to the tracks. You need to keep the CDs if you want to keep the music.
As for transferring the tracks from your iPhone back to your computer so you don't have to re-import all your CDs, check out this post from Zevoneer for some iPod/iPhone media recovery options:

If the old ID is yours, and if your current ID was created by editing the details of this old ID (rather than being an entirely new ID), go to https://appleid.apple.com, click Manage my Apple ID and sign in with your current iCloud ID.  Click edit next to the primary email account, change it back to your old email address and save the change.  Then edit the name of the account to change it back to your old email address.  You can now use your current password to turn off Find My iDevice, even though it prompts you for the password for your old account ID. Then save any photo stream photos that you wish to keep to your camera roll.  When finished go to Settings>iCloud, tap Delete Account and choose Delete from My iDevice when prompted (your iCloud data will still be in iCloud).  Next, go back to https://appleid.apple.com and change your primary email address and iCloud ID name back to the way it was.  Now you can go to Settings>iCloud and sign in with your current iCloud ID and password.

    That quickly!
Have you read for possible solutions over in the "More Like This" thread over here?----------------------->
When selecting passwords, make sure it's one that you will NEVER forget AND no one else can figure out.
Old school--- > Print it out & keep in a safe place.  A place that ONLY you know about AND never forget.
New school---> Get a password manager utility.  Highly recommend 1Password which is shareware.  Do a Google search for free password managers.
