Password Reverted To Old One On Its Own

My Mac Pro had the Veil Of Death crash screen earlier today for some reason. When I rebooted the computer, my primary account (which is one of two admin accounts) would not accept my login password.
I changed the password on this machine a couple of weeks ago, and on a hunch I tried my old password, which worked. How can that be?
I confirmed that the password had been changed from what I had been using by firing up the laptop and trying to access the Mac Pro machine with Apple Remote Desktop. ARD keeps the machine passwords memorized for the initial connection to be established. ARD would not connect until I edited the profile for the Mac Pro and changed the password to the old one. This confirmed in my mind that I wasn't somehow confused about the password.
What's even weirder is that after logging in, Software Update is now telling me it wants to install updates that it already has...the latest Garageband 4.1.1, Quicktime, and Security Update.
So I have a few scary things going on here:
First, a crash alters the password on the account. I can see corrupting it where you can't login at all with any password, but changing the password?
Second, how did it REVERT to an old password? When I changed the password a couple of weeks ago, shouldn't the old password have been wiped out somehow?
Third, why is software update thinking I don't have updates I already do. I know I installed these updates previously, because I made some ringtones in Garageband, which require the update it's trying to reinstall.
This is a Mac Pro with 10.5.1 and all updates applied.
I'm really freaked out about the magically changing password. Any ideas?

Oh man, this gets even weirder! I just let the software updates installed, and when I tried to login to the computer, the "old" password that I had just booted and installed updates with wouldn't work!
So I tried the proper password that I had changed to a couple of weeks ago, and it worked!
This is wild. I didn't change the password in weeks, and now it's flopping back and forth on its own.
This sounds like a serious bug in the works.

Why would you create a new account?
All purchases will be tied to the account from which they were purchased.
You will have to authorize your computer for all the accounts from which music is purchased.

You may be able to use the password for your existing iCloud account to get past this dialog.

(Does that apply to Setup Assistant, too, or only Migration Assistant?)
I suspect both since I think both are based on the same engine. I've seen numerous articles refer to both programs simultaneously.
(It's driving me nutzo trying to get long text boxes with inserts to look decent, much less the same way, in Safari as they do in iWeb.)

  • So, i changed my apple password. And now when i log into my iMessage it won't allow my new password, or my old one. How do i figure this out?

Can someone help me with my imessage. I changed my password and now it's not allowing my new password, or my old one.

Did you purchase Apple Care? If you did, you still have access to Apple Support.  If not, go to your Apple Store and let them help you get it set up correctly.  I'm sure it's something simple we're missing.  Good Luck.
Do remember one thing.  iMessage on iPad only works with other iOS devices.  This means you can only text to people who:
    1.  Have an iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch
    2.  And they have upgraded to iOS 5 or higher

  • I now have a new Apple ID because we forgot our password to the old one. How do I set up a new iCloud account without that old Apple ID password?

The iCloud message always pops up, however, it's conncected to our old Apple ID account which we no longer have the password for. Is there a way to delete that account and make a new one without the old password?

If the old ID is yours, and if your new ID was created by editing the details of this old ID (rather than being an entirely new ID), go to https://appleid.apple.com, click Manage my Apple ID and sign in with your current iCloud ID.  Click edit next to the primary email account, change it back to your old email address and save the change.  Then edit the name of the account to change it back to your old email address.  You can now use your current password to turn off Find My iDevice, even though it prompts you for the password for your old account ID. Then save any photo stream photos that you wish to keep to your camera roll.  When finished go to Settings>iCloud, tap Delete Account and choose Delete from My iDevice when prompted (your iCloud data will still be in iCloud).  Next, go back to https://appleid.apple.com and change your primary email address and iCloud ID name back to the way it was.  Now you can go to Settings>iCloud and sign in with your current iCloud ID and password.
If the old ID isn't yours, or if the new ID is an entirely new ID, you'll have to reset the password for the old ID if you can't remember it: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5787.  (Your iCloud ID is also an Apple ID.)

  • I have more than one ID and I don't remember the password to the old one which I purchased music under nor do I have the old email account...

Please help...I have one than more IDs. I cant remember the password or the email account that I purchased most of my music under. My computer is authorized under my current ID but not my old one. When I try to enter the answers to my security questions I get an error message that my birthdate is wrong.... any thoughts?...

If you can't reset the password by email, and you put the wrong date of birth on your account, then try contacting Support in your country and see if they can reset the password for you (they should be able to if they can confirm your id and that it's your account).
Contacting Apple about account security : Contact Apple for help with Apple ID account security
If your country isn't on that page then try this form to contact Support : https://www.apple.com/emea/support/itunes/contact.html
When it's been reset you can login to the account on http://appleid.apple.com, select the Password & Security section of your account, answer your security questions, and check your date of birth

  • New email password reverts to old password after saved

All of a sudden, about a week ago, my push mail stopped working on my AT&T account. I did the usual things, restarted the phone, deleted the email account and added it back, etc. but it still won't push. The strange thing is I went into my AT&T account and changed my password in Outlook. It tested fine and sent the test email. When I go on my iphone and add the AT&T email account back I enter my username and new password and hit "done". It verifies and gives me the check marks and says account added. But when I go back into that account and look at the settings the new password did not stay. It went back to the old password. Why would it do that? How do I get it to save my new password? It verifies it as being correct and I save it but when I go back in the new password is not there. The old one is there again. Does this have anything to do with my email not being pushed to my phone? Please help. Thanks

    Bump for help.

  • When i first opened my itunes acct. i was sharing with my daughter. she has gotten her own acct. now and we cannot remember the password to the old one. it will not let me sign in with my birth date and my email address is no longer the one on file help

When I first opened my itunes acct. i was sharing with my daughter. some time ago she got her own acct. i thought i should get my own too. so for the last several years i used my new acct. i reciently wanted to add some new cds to my ipod and it said that some of the songs that i purchased were no longer there. and were associated with a different acct. so i tried to log in to my old acct. but it asked for my birthday and the one i entered didnt match the records, and i no longer have the email address from the old acct to email me so i can reset the password. i have well over 100 songs that i purchased back then and i cant believe i cant get them back!! someone please help me. i love my music and i really want my other songs back.

Contact AppleCare at 800.694.7466, and ask for account security.  You will need to answer some questions to verify your identity, AND you will need access to a computer to generate a temporary support pin.

If you still have access to your old email address, go to https//appleid.apple.com, click Manage my Apple ID and sign in with your iCloud ID.  Tap edit next to the primary email account, tap Edit, change it back to your old email account and verify it.  Then edit the name of the account to change it back to your old email address.  You can now use your current password to turn off Find My iPhone on your device. If you don't have access to your old email address, you will have to contact Apple to have them reset the password so you can disable Find My iPhone and sign into your iCloud account.  You can either go to https://expresslane.apple.com, select "More Products and Services", then "Apple ID", then  on the next page select "Other Apple ID Topics", then "Lost or forgotten Apple ID password" and click "Continue"; or you can contact Apple Support (http://www.apple.com/support/icloud/contact/).

  • I didn't change my password but my old one isn't working

i have had my ibook g4 for about 4 years now and have been using the same password on it since i got it but the other day i was studying and my screen saver came on and the next time i went to use it it asked for my password like always but it wouldn't work... i tried making sure caps lock was off and that didn't work so i tried restarting it and that didn't work either now i can't login at all
    PLEASE HELP!!

    Hi, katielady -
    Okay.
I just registered that you have an iBook G4 model. None of the G4 iBook models, including the original one vintage 2003, are OS 9 bootable; they can use only OSX for booting. This means that my earlier reference to Multiple Users is not valid (since it pertains only to OS 9); and if you do not recall specifically setting an Open Firmware password then that does not apply either.
OSX requires a password entry every time - if the record of that got mangled somehow, that is probably what is blocking your access.
In order to fix that you will need to go through the process (it's not difficult) of changing the password. To do that you will need to boot the machine to its original installer disk set, the one that came with it. There is a procedure on the first page or so of the installer identified as Reset Password (I believe it is at Installer > Reset Password) - select that and follow the prompts.
Things that can cause files (and the data recorded in them) to go south -
    • Age. A frequently used file can get damaged accidentally for no preventable reason. Good backups and a touch of fatalism address this issue.
    • A drive that is too full. When a hard drive gets too full odd things begin happening. With OSX it is recommended that a minimum of 5GB be left unused on the hard drive.
    • The drive's directories have become damaged. The result of this is that the OS can not find what it is looking for. To test for this, while booted to the original install disk (or to a later install disk if the OSX base version is newer than the original one, such as 10.4 vs. 10.3) and run Disk Utilitiy (it's a menu option). Let Disk Utility take a look at the drive. It will report both things it can fix (which you should let it repair) and things it can not fix (which can usually be repaired by other utilities).

  • Can not get Firefox to remember a new password. Deleted old one for Password Manager, however it does not ask to save new password. Can't find a solution, please help!

I changed my password for a website, and Password Manager kept putting in my old password. Deleted the password from Manger, however Firefox does not ask me for a new one at all. Checked the help desk, but the solutions are not working either. Restarted computer, nothing. What do I need to do from here?

    Hey lydiac,
You could try going to ''Tools > Options > Privacy'' and removing the individual cookie for that site. You can also try going to ''Tools > Options > Security'' and verifying that the site isn't in your exceptions list.
    Hopefully this helps!
