Password ScreenSaver; plug in iPod -- This iPod is corrupted

If you have the Apple "password screensaver" running, with screen blank, and you plug in your iPod, you get a beep. When you log in, and see your desktop, there's a message that says "This iPod is corrupted".
How do I fix this?
Must I always log in first, before I plug in my iPod?
Sounds pretty stupid to me; wasn't this ever tested?

Hi William,
What kind of iPod do you have?
What happens when you launch iTunes and connect the iPod? Does the issue only occur when the screensaver is running?
Make sure you have the latest software updates for your Mac, just click the Apple in the top left corner of the screen, then click Software Update.
Try resetting the iPod as shown here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1320
If the issue persists, try the general tips in this article: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1207
