Password Security Seems Easy to Circumvent

I am wanting to place restrictions of accessing and changing a PDF that I want to make downloadable online. I note that sites like [link removed by moderator] seem to make stripping out pdf permissions passwords (document opening passwords are a bit harder to remove) a very simple task. Is there anyway of protecting a PDF so that it can only be cracked by someone who has a bit of IT knowledge, rather than by anyone just googling a website, spending a  minute of two on its content and then casually removing the permissions password?

Password protection is not suitable for B2B protection of secure content. You should use secure transmission channels. Greater security comes from certificate security, but this involves each sender and recipient setting up and sharing settings, so not only is the document protected from viewing, its authenticity is provable. In these days of fake invoices to syphon of millions of dollars, authenticity is the larger challenge.

Bit locker security issues (easy to crack) disk encryption?
Problem 1: When the PC run I think its too easy to get  malicious users (with usb pendrive) or spyware to get the encryption key (fast and easy)

Problem 3: not resistant with boot hacking
Im using DriveCrypt plus pack and searched security issues in bit locker. The bit locker allow you the bruteforce/dic attack easy.I think  It would be much safer 1. (I think the keys stored somewhere that is easily read) 2. Do not just be enough password
need a password+file combination to decrypt the disk. DriveCrypt plus pack use a file+password combination if you know the password but you wont have the file you can not decrypt the disk (protect with bruteforce attack). On system boot protected bruteforce
attak you can crash the (boot). If the boot system crash you can not decrypt the disk just the password you need the file+password combination plus to decrypt it. I am not a programmer but I see the BitLocker ( easy security catches to crack the disk encryption).Im
tested DriveCrypt and I can not get the key that easy (Problem 1). I have not tested it in greater depth just trying to (catches to crack software encryption).

    Where is your question, sir?
If the question were "is it easy to crack", the answer is "no". Your videos make use of several assumptions and ingredients and permissions that a normal attacker does not have.
"Problem 3" is not clear, please describe what scenario you are talking about.

  • Oracle Password Security - suppress messages and use an application message

We are implementing Oracle Password Security and I was wondering if the Oracle message can be suppressed?
Reason being, I would like to give an application message based on the return code from Oracle.
    Thanks.

Maybe I haven't explained it properly or I'm misunderstanding something but the exception init doesn't seem to be working.
We have set up a security profile and have set the Oracle password security profile parameters:
    •     failed_login_attempts
    •     password_grace_time
    •     password_life_time
    •     password_lock_time
    •     password_reuse_max
    •     password_reuse_time
    •     password_verify_function
As we know on connect, Oracle checks the security profile and if a users P/W will be expiring, Oracle prompts an internal message to the user, error code ORA-28002. Is there a way to suppress the internal Oracle message and somehow capture the error code?
    Thanks

Yesterday I uploaded Yosemite 10.10.2 thinking it was fixed by now. In Mail, my POP account gets this error message: Mail cannot send your password securely to the server. You can remove this restriction in the Accounts preferences by setting “Allow insecure authentication”, which could put your password at risk.
My provider says it's an Apple issue. The gmail accounts are logging in fine. Any help? Something simple?
    Thanks anyone.

Thanks Csound1. That did work and Mail was able to connect to the internet. Green light status. Is it because of my provider that I may never have had secure connections? Is that an Apple thing or do PCs have the same issues? Appreciate your help. I'll research insecure connections as I am ignorant of the consequences.

  • Loaded Yosemite onto mid 2011 MacBook Air. IMAP account goes offline - message - Mail cannot send your password securely to the server.  Allow insecure authentication doesn't work. Repeated reloads. No joy. Help!

Mail cannot send your password securely to the server. You can remove this restriction in the Accounts preferences by setting “Allow insecure authentication”, which could put your password at risk.

    I have the same problem.
    Late 2012 imac 27", intel i7 core
When I upgraded to Yosemite, suddenly my email account (netvigator POP) gives an error:
Mail cannot send your password securely to the server. You can remove this restriction in the Accounts preferences by setting “Allow insecure authentication”, which could put your password at risk.
I have shut down & restarted mail, but no success. If I select Allow insecure authentication, it works, but that's not a long term fix.
I also have a hotmail POP account enabled, and that is working fine.
    What's happening Apple??

I have old email address's I used for iTune music purchases and cannot change password on several old accounts. Now some of the music I purchased I can not download and authorize it on my device. What can I do password security does not match my birthdate on two of the accounts. Apple can not send me email with a password authorization on several current accounts that I have with them. How can I contact Apple with this annoying problem I can not fix.

settings - app/iTunes store - sign out and sign back in with your new id.
Note - if your older apps needs an update it will use your old apple id and password, as Apps are tied to the apple id that was used to purchase it.
    You can't merge apple id.

Thanks for the help Niel.  I couldn't change the rescue email address (an address that no longer exists and is therefore useless) until I could correctly answer the security questions.  After numerous guesses, finally got them right.  Was then presented with the option to change the rescue email address. Guess the only other option was to have Apple Support make the change or reset my account info.  Have made note of the correct answers so this won't happen again.   Thanks for the fast response!!

  • When password security-setting dialogue box is opened, the bottom can't be seen or moved

Using Acrobat XI Pro on my Dell PC, I was trying to add password protection to the document.  When I click on the "encrypt with password" button, the password security-setting dialogue box pops up, and I can enter the password.  However, the bottom of the page is not visible and I can't move it to click the "ok" button.  Any suggestions?

Which Acrobat XI Pro are you using? I think you experience the same problem that was reported on this forum in the past. I believe this problem was fixed in one of the recent versions (11.0.07??). Upgrade to the latest version and the problem should go away.

  • Downloaded file won't open when password-secured

Since moving from Acrobat 8 to 9, my passworded pdf file will not open once it is downloaded from the server.  My file was created as an .xls file in openoffice, then converted to pdf.  Password security was then set in Acrobat 9 pro (mac).  I works fine when not passworded.  Is there something I can do to regain the security functionality?  Note: the problem only occurs AFTER uploading to the server; it works as it should on my computer before that.

Thanks - I tried do that but I didn't see any appropriate forum - the choices were too specific.  Any chance you could point me to the correct one to deal with this issue?

  • Password security and write file in Adobe Reader

Hello! I have Adobe Acrobat 9 Professional. I have one question - can I make a PDF file with the following settings
    1. Adobe Reader users can save the filled file and print
    2. You can not modify file - filling of form fields is blocked
    3. Set security method: password security:  Document Open Password and Change Permissions Password.
The problem is that, as I set password security, Adobe Reader user can't save filled pdf file.
    Thank You in advance...

    You must allow form filling.

  • Password security - set permissions for different users

I am using Abobe Acrobat 9 Pro.
In the HELP menu, there is a security section in the contents, In the overview, it states the following:
"Each security method offers a different set of benefits. However, they all allow you to specify encryption algorithms, select the document components to encrypt, and set permissions for different users."
I would like to know how you can set permissions for different users using Password Security.
I am the only one in the company who has Acrobat 9 Pro and all others have Adobe Reader 8.
I have created a PDF file in Acrobat 9, this file is accessible to anyone with Abobe Reader. I would like to set different permissions for different users. For example, i would like certain individuals to print the document and other individuals to not be allowed to print. Can this be acheived using Password Security?

  • Password Security gets lost in portfolio/Low definition printing

Using Acrobat Pro Extended 9.0.0, I created a portfolio and added two PDF files to it (these files were not themselves password protected).
I then used File / Portfolio Properties / Security to apply password security, Encrypt except metadata, open password, permissions password allowing High Resolution printing and no changes finally allowing copying of text.
After completion, I then saved the file and closed acrobat.
Then clicked on secured file to open acrobat and was correctly asked for the opening password.
I then changed to list view, clicked on a file, Saved file from portfolio and saved it.
Clicked on PDF document (within portfolio) and looked at Portfolio properties and the security settings were still displayed.
Clicked on OPEN button (top right) and the document was opened. Document Properties still show security set.
    Closed acrobat completely.
Clicked on saved document from portfolio and was surprised to find no security settings at all. No opening password, no password for changing document, completely open.
This is a major security hole from what I can see.
Another similar problem. If I secure a PDF document with password security as above, yet with low resolution printing. I can then reopen the secured document and print to an Adobe printer driver creating a new unsecured PDF from my secured document.
I cannot believe Adobe could leave two such wide security holes in Acrobat 9 so surely I am missing something here.
Can someone please tell me how to put together a portfolio without these massive security problems.
    Regards
    John

Assigning security to a portfolio will not assign security to the individual documents.

  • PDF password security greyed out while saving a PDF MP Navigator

    Hello,
I am unable to set a password for pdf's that I scan with MP Navigator. I have been doing it for years, but now it has greyed out. It is not selectable. I recently upgraded my mobo and did a clean reinstall. The problem occurred before the upgrade and now remains despite full reinstalls of everything. The preferences button provides no way to turn passwords on or off. The Set... button shows password security also greyed out.
Win 7 Home premium 64 bit, 8GB, 250GB SSD root drive, Core i7. MP navigator EX 5.1. Pixma MP 895.
    Thanks,
    Jim

A simple way is to flatten the form fields, which converts the field appearances to regular page contents. You can do this with JavaScript or PDF Optimizer (Advanced > PDF Optimizer > Discard Objects > Flatten form fields). A very nice script that adds a custom menu item can be found here: http://www.uvsar.com/projects/acrobat/flattener/
