Password Server stopped and damaged DirectoryService.pid

I have a small design studio (three Macs and three Windows machines) using a Mac Mini Server running 10.6.8. It was running well until the end of July (coincided with my vacation), when staff reported they couldn't access the server using the normal passwords etc. I was able to talk them through Disk Utility etc so they could at least check the machine was accessible. One of the guys in the office managed to access it using a very old user/password combination, but nobody has been able to tell me exactly what else they did to access the files.
Looking at it today using Server Utility I found the following:
- Password Server is listed as 'stopped'
- Open Directory error logs show multiple unexpected shutdowns
- Password Service was shut down on 29th July and hasn't restarted
- 'Damaged Files' folder has a file called '0674b6e6DirectoryService.pid' in it
- Services like Mail and iChat are constantly on, even after turning them off.
- Time Machine isn't backing up and hasn't done so since 29th July...
No-one can access files using their allotted user names and passwords (the same ones that had been working for the last four years without issue). We can all access the server using this old user/password combination, but
I was already preparing to buy a new server this year, however is there a way to resurrect the passwords/user accounts? Can I replace the damaged file with one from a Time Machine back up - if so how?
Any help gratefully received.
Richard

I've even recreated the accounts in Active Directory (Mac Server's Computer account) and no luck.... any help/tips would be greatly appreaciated!
thanks!!!!

    Anyone an idea what's wrong here and how I can fix this?

    It's some time ago and I'm not 100% sure what solved the problem in the end.
    But you could try doing a backup  (Archive) your db (in the server admin) and then restoring that backup again. Maybe that helps.
    I'm now keepking an archive after every change I made to the OD. Hopfully that will save me in the future from such a problem.

    Seems ok or what? - But nothing works!

    Since update to OS X Server 10.5.6 I have the same problem.
    what is to do??

  • My program stops and i don't know why...

    I am not sure if i have a problem with my code or the VM but I'm assuming it's my code and hoping someone can help. I already searched through the forums and the bug database and I found some things I thought could maybe be my problem but after more testing the fixes and workarounds didn't work...
    It is a middleware between clients and database server all in java.
    The main thread invokes a thread that accepts socket connections and adds them to a connection queue (LinkedList). Various worker threads in a ThreadGroup wait and work with the connections as they come in. All this works correctly. Unfortunately my app is now displaying the unwanted characteristic of coming to an abrupt stop (not shutting down correctly) in an erratic manner. If no clients ever connect the app will sit and wait just fine (over 30 hours in 1 test until I stopped it) as soon as one connection is made however the app appears to be doomed. It will just stop anywhere between instantly and 10 minutes after the last connection is closed. Usually the span is between 2 and 3 minutes but it varies widely. It also will stay alive if another client connects, basically if the server is busy things are fine but when it is twiddling its thumbs waiting it just halts.
    Here is what the orginal code looks like...
    while(qOpen){
      Socket s = null;
      try{
        s = ss.accept();
      }catch(IOException clientConnectError){
        continue;
      try{
        rq.addConnection(s);
      }catch(ConnectionQueueException closed){
        // if the queue is closed attempt to close the socket either way set our flag to closed so we exit the loop
        try{
          s.close();
        }catch(IOException clientCloseError){}
        qOpen = false;
    // the next line does not show up when the server stops
    System.out.println("Server Shutting down...");i thought maybe my code was doing something bad somewhere and I had an uncaught exception or error such as outofmemory. So I altered the code slightly to trap any errors or exceptions that were possibly coming down so I would know where to debug.
    Altered code
    while(qOpen){
      try{
      Socket s = null;
      try{
        s = ss.accept();
      }catch(IOException clientConnectError){
        continue;
      try{
        rq.addConnection(s);
      }catch(ConnectionQueueException closed){
        // if the queue is closed attempt to close the socket either way set our flag to closed so we exit the loop
        try{
          s.close();
        }catch(IOException clientCloseError){}
        qOpen = false;
      }catch(Throwable thrown){thrown.printStackTrace();}
    // the next line does not show up when the server stops
    System.out.println("Server Shutting down...");The server stops and prints out nothing.
    Finally I thought maybe something bad is happening to the thread group. So I added another thread that loops and prints out some information about the ThreadGroup....
    Thread Group Information
    Active Count : 8
    Is Daemon : false
    This prints out like this exactly the same each time including the iteration just before everything comes to a halt.
    So I am stuck, (1)the app is not shutting down properly, (2)I cannot find (or trap) an error that is causing it to stop and (3) nothing wierd seems to be happening to my group of workers. What else can I do to find this error. Is this possibly a vm bug or is it more likely a code problem. I am not asking for anyone to solve my code if that is the problem but I have no more ideas about how to find out what the problem is. In case it helps here is the output from java -version
    java version "1.3.1_01"
    Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build 1.3.1_01)
    Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 1.3.1_01, mixed mode)

    case? If so, I suggest that -- if you haven't already
    done so -- that you build a prototype of your project
    consisting only of the socket code that you're having
    problems with. This will obviate the possibility that
    something else in some seemingly unrelated piece of
    code is causing the problem. If you get that to work,
    then add pieces to your prototype until it converges
    with what you have now. That will allow you to
    isolate the piece causing the problem.This is not my first work with sockets in java but I think I may have to do the speration you mention to isolate the problem.
    Secondly, I'm writing this because I have I had a
    similar problem with sockets in C when I was first
    playing with them, and I know that deep down in the
    OS, sockets are sockets, pretty much the same as they
    ever were, and so my advice might carry to JAVA.
    First of all, you need to find out if the connections
    you are creating are blocking or non-blocking,
    including the server socket. If they are blocking,
    which I believe used to be the default, that means
    that your code will stop there and appear to hang
    when what is really happening is that it is just
    waiting for the next piece of data (or next
    connection, for a queue socket). If you've already
    got all that worked out, I recall that C sockets
    would cause an error condition on the port which, if
    not caught and handled, would really gunk things up
    because the port would show up as readable (using the
    tools for handling non-blocking sockets) but there
    would never be any data on it, which originally
    caused my software to hang while trying to read the
    nonexistent data. Go check those things and come
    back.Yes there are blockng calls... s = ss.accept() is a blocking call. Here is the code with more comments as I understand what is happening.
    Socket s = null;
    try{
      // this next line is a blocking call. This thread (only the one) will be waiting until a connection attempt is made
      s = ss.accept();
    }catch(IOException clientConnectError){
      // the accept method may throw an IOException this is
    an error to trap in the client debugging stage and otherwise I don't care so ignore it and jump to the next iteration of the loop.
      continue;
    try{
      // here the whole socket is added to a queue of sockets.
      rq.addConnection(s);here is my code for the ConnectionQueue of sockets...
    public class ConnectionQueue{
      private LinkedList lElements;
      private boolean bOpen;
      public ConnectionQueue(){
        lElements = new LinkedList();
        bOpen = true;
    /** Adds the socket to the end of the queue.
    @param s The socket to add to queue.
    @exception ConnectionQueueException If this queue has been closed.*/
      public synchronized void addConnection(Socket s)throws ConnectionQueueException{
        if(!bOpen){
          throw new ConnectionQueueException("Request Queue closed.");
        lElements.addLast(s);
        notify();
    /**Returns the socket at the beginning of the queue.
    @exception ConnectionQueueException If the queue is closed and empty.*/
      public synchronized final Socket getConnection()throws InterruptedException,ConnectionQueueException{
        if((!bOpen)&&(lElements.size()<=0)){
          throw new ConnectionQueueException("Request Queue Closed");
        while(lElements.size()<=0){
          wait();
          if((!bOpen)&&(lElements.size()<=0)){
            throw new ConnectionQueueException("Request Queue closed.");
        try{
          return (Socket) lElements.removeFirst();
        }catch(ClassCastException bad){
          throw new ConnectionQueueException(bad.getMessage());
    /** Closes the queue. A closed ConnnectionQueue will not accept any additional sockets through addConnecion(Socket s). Sockets will still be returned by getConnection() for a closed ConnectionQueue while there are still queued sockets.*/
      public synchronized void close(){
        bOpen = false;
        notifyAll();
         Well all this code works as it is supposed to. Also the app only dies (and when I mean dies/stops it is dead no more process, no more vm, nothing) when nothing is happening as opposed to if it is really busy in which case it is fine.

  • J2EE server stops while stopping irj application

    Hi
    We are getting Problem while trying to stop irj application before applying Patch 2 SP2 in EP 6.0. The server stops and displays message connection Lost in admin tool.
    Pl help me to solve the Problem.
    Regards
    Atul

    it stops every time if i make some changes. it is eclipse or bea-plugin which thinks the server has to be restarted/redeployed and so the server will be stopped (that's what i think)
    i could now "resolve" the problem with deactivating the builders on the utility-project where my beans are located.
    Properties/project/builders:
    [X] Java Builder
    [ ] Faceted Project Validation Builder
    [ ] Validation
    [ ] Web Logic J2EE Library Framework Validator
    this is a quite adventurous solution! if i restart the workbench with the configuration above, eclipse will migrate the project and "Web Logic J2EE ... Validator" is active again and doubled. This looks like so and it is still working:
    [X] Java Builder
    [ ] Faceted Project Validation Builder

  • Using cron to stop and restart password protected instance (App Server 7)

    I have been asked by a customer to create a cron job to stop and restart their web application running under Applications server 7.
    I have created the script and can stop the instance, but I am unable to start it as it is asking for a password.
    I have included this in the script but it doesn't seem to like having a password supplied this way.
    Am I doing something wrong or Are there any alternative ways of stopping and restarting an application, using Cron?

    Have you looked at using password.conf file as described in --

    That is not good, lets see if we can get your email back up and running again. Take a look at the article below to go over the settings to just make sure nothing is out of the ordinary. You may end up needing to remove the email account and add it back in.

    Having been in IT for close to 30 years what they actually thought was, "whether you can connect your phone to our network isn't out problem, please go away".
    They don't want to troubleshoot it. And, honestly, if it's your personal phone, they shouldn't have to. it's not their problem unless their boss says it is.

  • My Samba server stopped working and I have no idea why.

    I set up a samba server once I got arch installed and it was working like a boss for about a month. Then one day (i think the machine may have rebooted) it just stopped working. I can't access my samba share from any of my other machines (all running Windows 7). I hadn't changed anything so I don't know what the culprit is. I did some update and looked at the smb.conf file but everything seems to be in order. I also tried to connect with smbclient from the machine itself and I get an NT_STATUS_CONNECTION_REFUSED error.
    What's going on?
    Here is my smb.conf
    # This is the main Samba configuration file. You should read the
    # smb.conf(5) manual page in order to understand the options listed
    # here. Samba has a huge number of configurable options (perhaps too
    # many!) most of which are not shown in this example
    # For a step to step guide on installing, configuring and using samba,
    # read the Samba-HOWTO-Collection. This may be obtained from:
    # http://www.samba.org/samba/docs/Samba-HOWTO-Collection.pdf
    # Many working examples of smb.conf files can be found in the
    # Samba-Guide which is generated daily and can be downloaded from:
    # http://www.samba.org/samba/docs/Samba-Guide.pdf
    # Any line which starts with a ; (semi-colon) or a # (hash)
    # is a comment and is ignored. In this example we will use a #
    # for commentry and a ; for parts of the config file that you
    # may wish to enable
    # NOTE: Whenever you modify this file you should run the command "testparm"
    # to check that you have not made any basic syntactic errors.

    Hi,
    My thought is to check the current IP of the server, as your smb.conf has the line interfaces = 192.168.1.109 which means samba will only listen on that interface for requests. If the IP of the server has changed, that would explain why samba isn't working.

    any ideas? Thank

    - which OS & version are you running into this issue ?
    - By definition, defunct processes (or zombie processes) are processes that have exited prior to it's parent calling a wait() on it to get the return status .
    - couple of things I can think of to narrow down the cause of this issue
    1. disable ASP & php plugins and see if this still causes this issue
    2. try starting the web server with log level to finest and see fi you get any useful information from the server error logs
    hope this helps

  • DI Server in Server Tools stopped and now cannot start

    Hi,
    I have an issue on firstly stopping the DI server from Server Tools and then I want to start the service again. Basically, I wanted to restart the DI Server service. But when I stopped the service, it isn't stopping completely. I also checked by going to services.msc. There the status is shown as Stopping.
    How can I stop this service safely and then start again?
    Any ideas will be highly appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.
    Regards,
    Sanil

    Well, it happened to me but it wasn't the DI Server, in fact, it wasn't any sort of SAP service. The problem: "admin rights".
    Maybe you should open the Server Tools running as administrator, start/stop DI Server.
    Test in the command line:
    NET STOP SBODI_Server
    or
    NET STOP /y SBODI_Server
    Now, sometimes a windows service can hang on, it never reaches the stopped phase. The only way to stop the service is killing the process, in this case "B1DI_Server.exe". This won't end another process.
    End process or end process tree would be the solutions (Try the first one).
    In the command line you could do this:
    sc queryex SBODI_Server      -> Now, you get the PID. For instance: 409
    taskkill /PID 409 /F                    -> It's forced to kill the process
    This should avoid the need of a reboot, but take care.

  • When I try to use Safari on my i6 phone to connect to internet, it says "Safari could not open the page because the server stopped responding."  However, my wi-fi is connected on the phone and computer.  What can I do to correct this?

    When trying to connect to internet, my i6 phone says "Safari could not open the page because the server stopped responding."  However, our house's wi-fi is on. Any ideas why this is happening?

    Settings → scroll down to Safari → in Safari settings, I selected both Clear History and Clear Cookies and Data.
    IF that does not work -
    Restart or reset your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support
    Finally - if problem still present -
    Go to Settings>General>Reset
         Reset the network settings - you will need to add the password of your home WiFi in your phone once more
    The device should turn itself off & back on then go into Settings>Wifi and join your network

    Unless you have a copy of the iPod backup file from the previous computer installation you are out of luck. If yo have that file move it to your computer and restore the iPod from that backup.  Otherwise, you will have to restore the iPod to factoery defaults/new iPod and lose all your app date. That is the way it is since the iPod sees the computer as a new computer/iTunes library.  That backup file is located:
    Mac: ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup/
    Windows XP: \Documents and Settings\(username)\Application Data\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\
    Windows Vista and Windows 7: \Users\(username)\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\
