Password sleep but not screen saver

Is there any way to make OS X ask for a password to wake up from sleep, but automatically quit a screen saver? In the security preference pane, you can either password both sleep and the screen saver, or neither.
If this is possible, I'm assuming it would be a command line hack or something of that sort.

I would like to do the same thing? Does anyone have an answer?

I have a group of my images that rotate, and yes it happens oneach. I do believethat I have at one time had the images cover the entire screen, however I cannor remember how I made that happen, just like the desktop. I am sure it is old'ites setting in!

  • Time Machine crashes whenever the computer goes to sleep or into screen saver mode.

Apologies if there is an obvious answer or post about this.  Every time I try to initialize Time Machine, it will begin backing up until the computer goes to sleep or the screen saver kicks in.  When I wake the computer up, I get a message that says "The backup was not performed because an error occurred while copying files to the backup disk."  The message also tells me that the problem might be temporary and to try Disk Utility to repair the backup disk if the problem persists.
When I run Disk Utility, I am told that the volume cannot be repaired and that it needs to be reformatted.  I reformat the disk, try to run Time Machine again, and get the same problem whenever the computer goes to sleep or into screen saver mode.  Lather, rinse, repeat.
I managed to get an initial backup only if I turned off the screen saver and the sleep function.  However, once I turned them back on, I ran into the same problem when Time Machine tried to update the backup.
I am running OS X v.10.6.8 on an iMac5,1.  The backup is a Toshiba 1TB USB external HD. I saw this same problem posted in the Lion forum (and I cribbed the title of this post from there).  Nobody has offered a solution yet, but it was a very recent post.
    Thanks in advance.

Oh yeah I forgot to say I use an ETHERNET connection.

Virgin media require a colon as part of the Email line . I can put in a colon on the line above or below ie Name or Password line but not this line

I had a similar problem in that my wife's iphone 5 could not send pics with imessage.  Had to set the settings to default to SMS or whatever.  After laboring many hours on the web I coincidentally was on the phone with the internet people to question my internet speed.  They changed the router channel, which is something that I am capable of doing myself.  After that, the pics go over imessage.  My own Iphone didn't have the problem.  We are both latest IOS 7.0.6.

  • Ask for password after sleep but not after screen saver

Hi guys!! I have been using a mid 2009 Macbook pro since mid 2009 and obviously am thoroughly satisfied!! I have OS 10.7.4 Lion.
A small glitch that has been nagging me lately is that I have my screensaver set to on before my book goes to sleep. But I don't want it to ask for a password after it comes back from the screensaver. I want it to ask for password only when it comes back from sleep coz I don't shut the system down more than once a month, so only flip the screen shut when my day ends.
So essentially is there a way I can make it as for a password ONLY after it wakes from sleep and NOT after screensaver?

I'm not entirely in love w/ the idea of having to move all my data over to the other account. I might just deal w/ not having the screen saver ask for the pass. One other bit of info that may be helpful: This is the second time having this problem. The first time, it got fixed after the most recent intel osx update. I figured that apple had found a bug and fixed it. Then, w/o shuting down my comp, it failed to ask again. Is there any applications that could be messing this up? Any widgets that might do it?? If not, is there any apps that can switch all my pics/movies, etc over to the other account?

  • Hot Corners do not seem to put Mac to sleep or activate screen saver

All was been working fine and as expected on my Macbook until the 10.6.2 update. I have left hot corner set as screen saver, and right hot corner set to sleep the display. When I go to the hot corners, sleep or screen saver is activated, but then I walk away and a few minutes later the screen comes on again...
At first I thought this was just my macbook (nothing was running but email and no external devices attached), but then It started doing this to my MacPro after the last update...exact same thing.. Then it started happening to my work iMac, then my daughters iMac and now my sons iMac. The only machine that doesn't seem to be effected is my wifes MacMini - and she is still running 10.6.1.
Does anyone know if there is an update somewhere, or how to fix this issue?
    thanks

I would not regard myself as expert and you are going to get opinions for both approaches. I have just passed on a 3 year-old MacBook Pro that has never been off, apart from updating when restarts are required. Similarly, my iMac sleeps (protected by UPS) and is not turned off. I am happy this way.
I would take slight exception to your process, however. In my opinion, I put the MacBook Pro to sleep by using OptionCommandDelete (or the Apple menu) and wait until the power light pulses before closing the lid.

  • Password after sleep but not when starting?

I have set the option to require a password immediately after sleep or screen saver begins, and that works fine. Waking from sleep requires a password. However, if I shut down the computer and then start up again, I'm not required to enter a password. Can't seem to locate the settings to require a password in that situation.Any suggestions?

That's under users in system preferences. Unlock if necessary and look under Login Options -> Automatic Login.

  • Login on waking from sleep, but not screensaver / sleep display

Hi all, been trying to get rid of the login from screen saver / sleep display, while keeping the login on waking the computer from sleep. The reason I want to do this is because I frequently use a Hot Corner to sleep the display while listening to music etc, and having to enter a password just to change tracks etc is a pain But obviously I want to keep the password protection when the computer is put to sleep, as it always is when left unattended.
Anyway, based on initial Googling, I first tackled the problem by installing SleepWatcher from http://www.bernhard-baehr.de/, and adding this line to the global /etc/rc.wake script:
    /System/Library/CoreServices/Menu\ Extras/User.menu/Contents/Resources/CGSession -suspend
However, this wasn't very satisfactory, because after waking the computer up from sleep, you initially get a normal session, which then suspends after 3 or 4 seconds. During this time you can interact with the session as normal and move windows etc, so it kind of gives you the impression that you don't have to log in, and then you do, so it's a bit clunky, and also doesn't feel very secure.
I thought I managed to improve the situation by moving the 'suspend' command to SleepWatcher's /etc/rc.sleep script instead of the /etc/rc.wake script - meaning that your session is suspended just before sleep, so it's already suspended when you wake the computer up. But then I noticed an even worse problem - my "Sleep Display" Hot Corner stopped working after SleepWatcher suspended my session!
Yes that's right, every time the 'suspend' command ran in conjunction with SleepWatcher, my "Sleep Display" Hot Corner got disabled, and didn't get re-enabled until I completely logged out and back in (or rebooted). So I stopped using SleepWatcher, by removing the 'suspend' command from any SleepWatcher scripts, and now Hot Corners work as normal again following successive sleeps.
So next I thought, maybe I could write an AppleScript that toggles the "Require password..." checkbox in System Preferences, perhaps to use in conjunction with SleepWatcher, so that the checkbox is disabled when the display is put to sleep, and enabled when the computer is put to sleep. I actually got as far as writing an AppleScript that toggled the checkbox, and was about to attempt to integrate it with SleepWatcher...
...then I stumbled across an old thread, where they talk about updating plists under com.apple.screensaver, in order to solve a slightly different problem:
    http://forums.macosxhints.com/showthread.php?t=14085
Despite the thread being a few years old and trying to solve a different problem, the following command sounded hopeful so I thought I'd try it:
defaults -currentHost write com.apple.screensaver askForPassword -int 0
...and lo and behold, it works!
My mac is now behaving exactly as I want it - prompting for password on wake from sleep in the normal way as it did before, and not prompting when I merely wake the display (or screensaver)!
This is in conjunction with having the "Require password to wake this computer from sleep or screen saver" checkbox turned ON in System Preferences.
But the puzzling thing is, why does it work? Is it safe? Are there any side-effects and am I likely to need to re-enable it following software updates? Does it work for anyone else?
When I query the values under com.apple.screensaver, I get the following... I have no way of telling what the askForPassword value was before I changed it:
    $ defaults -currentHost read com.apple.screensaver
    askForPassword = 0;
    idleTime = 0;
    moduleName = Flurry;
    modulePath = "/System/Library/Screen Savers/Flurry.saver";
    tokenRemovalAction = 0;
Basically I'm very surprised that a simple one-line command seems to solve the problem, when there are so many threads where people have asked the same question, and either been told it's not possible, or told you need to do weird stuff with SleepWatcher and/or Applescript, which is often incompletely explained, more complex and less effective.
So, is the one-line askForPassword solution too good to be true?

Thanks. I think for an office-type environment, it is an unusual requirement.
But let's not forget, more and more people use their computers in living-room type environments, for tasks such as playing music or watching films on a remote display. You're typically in a much darker ambience, which you don't want that to be shattered by the bright, white glare of a computer screen all the time!
So you need total control over whether the display is on or off. This has nothing to do with leaving the computer unattended. You're still there, "using" the computer, you're just not necessarily using the display.
Anyway... you are right, I toggled the "Require password..." setting in System Preferences off and then on again, and the "askForPassword" plist value changed itself to 1.
However... the behaviour of my mac has not changed. It behaves the way I want it (prompt for password on waking the compuer, but not on waking only the display), regardless whether the value of askForPassword is 0 or 1.
    Even after rebooting.
    Strange... what have I done?

  • QuickTime makes display sleep, according to screen saver time

    QuickTime 7.1, OS 10.4.6, PowerBook G4
My display sleep time is set for never, and my screen saver is set for 5 minutes. When I play a QuickTime movie, if I don't move the pointer once in a while, the display sleeps at 5 minutes. I could see QuickTime movies not informing the computer that something is going on, but in this case the screen saver should activate. Instead, the display simply sleeps.
    Any idea what's going on?

    Does not matter any more.

  • App that disables sleep that allows screen saver

    Hey everyone,
Curious if anyone has found an application that allows an easy one click in the menu bar that disables sleep display while still allowing the screen saver to run.
I use caffein to disable sleep in general, not just sleep display but it does not allow the screen saver to run. I like this app cause it is easy to turn it on and off with one click on the menu bar but I cant find anything similar in ease.
Basically I want my entertainment macbook's screen saver to stay on and not sleep the display, because then my TV turns off when it sleeps the display, even though it is still playing music. At the same time, I want to be able to turn back sleep on after I am done playing music so the macbook goes to sleep when I am gone.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks all!

What's wrong with the settings in System Preferences -> Energy Saver? Set both sliders to never, then just put it to sleep manually when you are done with it. That won't require any more manipulation than your proposed solution and wouldn't require running an extra app to take care of it.

  • How do I prevent computer sleep when on screen saver

    Hello,
I have an early 2009 MacBook Pro (17 in.). Since installing Lion, I have a problem when my MBP stays on the screen saver for a while. (Arabesque). I have set my Energy Saver preferences so that when on power adapter, the MBP goes in Display sleep after an hour, but never goes in Computer Sleep.
However, when I leave it like that for a while, the computer still goes to sleep.
Does anybody know what I need to do to make it respect the Energy Saver preferences?
    Thanks,    Dan.

Yes it's important to have both. Basically, I'm using third party
software, a surveillance program to trigger Insteon and X10 portions of my
home automation. The only way to do this on a motion detection event is to
run an executable from that program, so I'm doing so by launching LV with
the vi as the argument. The problem currently is that when the motion even
occurs, the vi pops up for a split second and then runs in hidden mode.
    I
did try the transparant thing, but it still grabs focus away from the current
application. Wouldn't be an issue at all if the pc were dedicated to the
security system, but it's used for other stuff too.
    I do have a fallback
and that is to listen to UDP on assigned sockets from the surveillance program.
I would prefer not because it's intended to be used only with the remote
video playback client program and more importantly, if LV isn't running,
then I'm SOL. Currently, the VIs that are launched do to camera activity
also make sure through path and call references that the other parts of the
system running is LV is running or launched if not.

  • 10.4.6 won't sleep or run screen saver

After upgrading my mini to 10.4.6, it will not sleep the screen or spin down the disks, and the screen saver will not run. Other than this, everything is fine. Any advice, anyone?

I discovered that the problem with the screen saver not activating was being casued by version 2.0 of Griffin's RadioSHARK software. After updating to 2.01, released today, my screen saver now runs. However, the drives still won't go to sleep.

  • New y580 will sleep but not wake

    Hello,
I just received my new y580 today and it would seem every time it goes to sleep, I can't wake it up.  The blinking power button glowscontinuously a after I press it but the screen is black and no activity.  I tried everything I could think of but hard reset is the only option. Any help is appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Ron
P.s. it was like that out of the box. I have not installed any software.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

The initial call was made at about 9:15 AM PDT 8/16/12 and I did not make note of the rep's name.  After suggesting I disable sleep mode in power settings, he took my contact information and the call ended.
I made another call to support at 7:30 PM PDT and spoke with Rachael.  We engaged in a remote control session checking various settings.  Since this is a 2-day old computer and nothing to lose, she concluded a OKR to factory restore was the best option.  I had to interrupt the call to attend a family matter.
Next call to support at 10:30 PM PDT, I spoke with Jessie.  He reviewed the information recorded by the previous support reps and walked me through the OKR process.  Once it began, he instructed me to let it complete, reboot, walk through initial setup, and try waking from sleep again before installing any software.  The call ended.
The recovery process completed successfully in about 15 minutes.  I started the computer up and went through the initial setup procedure, allowed the computer time to fully start up, and idle.  I put the computer to sleep but sadly, the problem still exists.  I could not wake the computer and had to hard-reset.
Next call to support at about 10:55 PM PDT, I spoke with Joe.  He informed me I had a couple choices. I could send the computer out for warranty repair or since it was so new, I could send it back to Lenovo for exhange or refund and gave me the appropriate contact information which I will follow up on tomorrow.
I am rather disappointed that this type of hardware issue could make it past QA and into the customer's hands. But with the exception of the first representative to whom I spoke, I would like to extend my gratitude to all the customer support reps mentioned above for their help.  I will keep my fingers crossed that the next computer works as it should.

  • Smart Album works with Desktop, not Screen Saver?

I've created a Smart Album in iPhoto, with my 5-star photos in it, calling it "My Favorites". In iPhoto, there are 116 photos right now. When I go to my Desktop settings, I see all the photos in "My Favorites".
When I go to Screen Saver, I get 5 of the photos in that Smart Album. I've got other Smart Albums, some with thousands in them, and they display just fine.
I've deleted and re-created "My Favorites", even using a different name. I still get the same results.
Any ideas why Desktop would work, but Screen Saver won't, with the exact same Smart Album?

Update: I'm now running 10.6.3 and iPhoto 8.1.2, and the problem is gone.
    Thanks, Apple.
