Passwords following Migration Assistant

Hi folks
I have read a lot about Migration Assistant and Keychain, but nothing that addresses my needs.
I recently used Migration Assistant to move my old Mac Pro stuff after I had already begun using my new MacBook Pro.  I now have two user accounts on the MacBook - let's call them NewMacBookPro (the default MacBook user account I had been using for a brief period) and OldMacPro (the user account I've lived within for a couple of years now). I would like to now delete one, and it would seem easier to delete NewMacBookPro because this account has none of my old email/bookmarks/application licenses etc.  However, the OldMacPro account is having some glitchy Keychain issues which I would like to fix before completely eradicating NewMacBookPro, which does not have these issues.
The issues I'd like to resolve:
1) Finder Admin password requests: Every time I try to delete a file in Finder I am expected to give the Admin password, even though both user accounts have Admin privileges. I have tested to see whether it was a matter of trying to delete files/apps from OldMacPro that were originally installed in NewMacBookPro, but it matters not.  If I want to delete anything in Finder on OldMacPro I need to enter the password every single time.  This problem does not occur at all in NewMacBookPro, even when I decide to delete an app that came over with OldMacPro.
2) Keychain access password requests: The first time I open the Safari, or Mail (and some others) applications in OldMacPro, I am prompted to submit my Keychain access password.  While this is only requested once, it is not requested at all if I open these programs in NewMacBookPro, and was never requested on the old Mac Pro. I don't mind entering the Kaychain password once per program if it is intentionally set up for security, but I made no such change and yet here it is... Why?
3) Starting Keychain from scratch: Basically I would like OldMacPro to implement Keychain in the way NewMacBookPro did by default, which is also the same way as it was implemented on the old Mac Pro by default.  I never changed the setting in either system, yet the migrated version now performs differently.  I would also prefer to delete all the Keychain content from OldMacPro and use instead the new Keychain content and settings from NewMacBookPro in order to start afresh with renewed control over what passwords are saved.  Can Keychains be transferred between account, or do I need to reset Keychain somehow.
OldMacPro had Snow Leopard fully updated so there should have been no OS discrepancies between the old Mac Pro and the new MacBook Pro.
Thanks!

In a word, no.
One of the reasons is, your TM backups include a full copy of the version of OSX from your old Mac. It won't run on your new one. Even if they're fairly similar, some hardware is slightly different, with different requirements, etc., and no Mac will run a version of Leopard that's earlier than the Mac's build date.
You'll note that when you use +Enter Time Machine+ on your new Mac, you don't see the backups from the old one. But if you mount the old Sparse Bundle, then hold down the Option key while clicking the TM icon in your Menubar, the option changes to +Browse Other Time Machine Disks,+ which is badly worded, but will let you see them. So they're still there, and items can be recovered if you need them.
You best bet is probably to erase the TC via Airport Utility and let TM start fresh.
Or, to save some space on the TC, you could manually delete some backups, and/or the backups of your /System and /Library folders, via the TM interface, per the instructions in item 12 of teh +Frequently Asked Questions+ post at the top of this forum.
Then you'd have to "compact" the old sparse bundle (it doesn't do that automatically), via a Terminal command:
hdiutil compact (hit spacebar, drag Sparse Bundle to Terminal window, press return)
But note that TM will not delete old backups from the old machine as it makes new ones for your new Mac; you'll have to do that manually.

    Not so.
If you use Setup Assistant on your Mac when it first starts up, whatever you transfer to your Mac will be in a single user account.
If you use Migration Assistant later on, whatever you transfer will go into a new user account.
See OS X Lion: About Windows Migration Assistant for details.

  • Migration Assistant - denied access to transferred folders

Just bought a new iMac and followed migration assistant to transfer files across from my old mac. However, for many of my transferred files, I am getting the message "The folder "xxx" can't be opened because you don't have permission to see the contents". This happens on the following folders: Desktop, Documents, Downloads, Library, Movies, Music, Pictures, and Public. But I can open those folders which I created on the old mac. Any suggestions how to open these "denied" folders?

I am now able to get to the Server prerfernces, however, I have to use Server-name.local to get there. Why would I be unable to use the domain name instead? Also, I am unable to login to the server to acces Podcast Capture from any Mac. It comes back saying that I don't have access to it. I tried converting my installation to an Advanced one to see if it would have an impact, but it didn't.

  • Migration Assistant password woes w/ Mountain Lion

Having a bag of hurt trying to migrate from an old iMac to a new Retina Display MacBook Pro.
Using Carbon Copy CLoner, I cloned my iMac's drive to a USB external, to simplify/automate migrating the data to the MBP. The transfer went normally, but the MBP is refusing to recognize my password when I try to login.
    Steps I've taken so far:
    - Booting the MBP from the USB external connected to the MBP. Works fine, with no password problem.
    - Booting to the Recovery partition, erasing the main drive, and reinstalling the OS, then running Migration Assitant over again. Long process, same password trouble.
    - Erasing main partition again, then running Migration Assistant directly from the source iMac via wireless. Slow, but it worked. And I got the same result: pasword not accepted.
    - Creating a Test User account with no data migration, then loggin in at the App Store to download the previously purchsed Mountain Lion installer. (The MBP is brand new, but shipped with Lion instead of Mountain Lion). At the end, I got some cockamamie "can't download" error.
    Aaaaargh!!
Could it be related to the iMac haivng been upgraded to Mountain Lion before the process bega, while the newly-arrived MBP had Lion installed? I wouldn't think that would screw up a simple data migration, but...

  • Migration assistant from PC password problems

I just used migration assistant to bring my data from my pc laptop to my new macbook air.  It brought it over, and deposited it under a new user id.  But I can't log in as that user because it says the password expired, and doesn't recognize the password I had on my pc (awful vista). When I try to change the password on system prefs, those usernames are greyed out and can't be changed.  Help!

Next time you have to transfer files from a pc to ur mac you should do what i did..
the BEST solution for me was going to this link

it was a MILLION times easier than Migrate Assistant PC-to-Mac
and the best part there is no "other" user accounts and passwords to deal with!!!
just FOLLOW the steps!! I transfered my Itunes library & pictures all in like 15 min with my ethernet cable!

  • After a Lion clean install, how do I retrieve my data from external back-up? Following Apple advice for use of Migration Assistant did not work creating similar issues leading to clean install.

After a Lion clean install, how do I retrieve my data from external hard drive?
Following Apple advice I used Migration Assistant which crashed new system twice which is why I had to clean install Lion in the first place.
Is there a sure way of doing it?
I have only a few programs that I will have to install myself and that should not be a problem.
I just want my data, music and photos back where I can use them.

Time machine backups. I went to migration assistant a few hours ago and limited my selection to "users", no need for applications, settings and other files.  Stuff started moving over at a fast pace but has now seemed to stall.
I will let it run overnight as there are lots of songs and photos as well as a few movies.
If that does not work, then I will go into TM and try restore. I have restored some things in the past such a mail files and it has worked well.
The Apple fellow at the store told me to go right into TM, he may have had a point. I'll get it eventually.

  • What is the password for the new user account that is set up via Migration Assistant?

I recently purchased a new Macbook Pro, and used Migration Assistant to download My Documents from a previous PC desktop. The migration was successful, but afterwards the new user account that was set up to house all the new documents became inaccessible to me.
My administrator's password works for my computer and I am able to log in and out, change settings, etc.
However, if I try to log in to the new user account, no password works. Through the administrator's account I have also attempted to change the password, and I am allowed to do so, but when I use the new password I set up, it still denies me access.
Additionally, if I log out the administrator's account and click the new account to log in, it prompts me to make a new password for the account, and whatever I enter is also rejected as "incorrect." (The screen shakes)
I am very frustrated my inability to access this information I must use to work, and I have no idea what the password might be, or how to change it properly.
PLEASE HELP COMMUNITY! I have only had my mac for about a week and I have had it up to hear with this "user friendly" system.

You can change the password from Visual administrator. login to visual administrator, and select services,, under that you will find the system details. change the password.
even if the visual administrator password is expired then u can go thorugh configtoo.bat and there u can change the password.
if that even not possible then u need to login to sql and can execute the commands for changing password.

  • I cannot log into user account with old password after using migration assistant.

I used Migration Assistant to move only my Settings and Users from my Power PC (User name RLE 5) to my Mac Pro.  Because of what I have read in these forums I did not migrate applications or and files/folders. I will do that manually.  After migrating I tried logging in to my user account RLE 5 on my Mac Pro, but it is telling me I am using the wrong password.  I used the same password I used on my Power PC, but with no luck.  On my Mac Pro I went into System Preferences>Accounts>RLE 5 account and changed the password.  I then rebooted and tried again.  No luck.
Can somebody help me with this problem?
    Thank you.

What you propose would not solve the problem I am having.  I must not have been clear about it.  So I will elaborate.
I have a Power PC with 10.5.8.  The admin user account name is RLE 5.  I need a password to log into my root user account on my Power PC.
Then I bought a used Mac Pro with a clean install of 10.7.5 and no password set up yet for my admin user account.  The admin user account name is Mac Pro.  When I turn on the computer it opens to my admin user account where I have access to everything.
I used Migrations Assistant to move my Settings and Users from my Power PC to my Mac Pro.  That seemed to to successfully.
So I now have four users on my Mac Pro:  RLE 5 (the admin user from my Power PC with the password), Mac Pro (my admin user which does not require a password), and two guest user accounts.
I turn on my Mac Pro and it opens to my Mac Pro admin user account.  I don't need to sign in.  No problem.
I log out of Mac Pro.  On my screen are the four user accounts.  I click on RLE 5 (which was my admin user account on my Power PC that I migrated over to my Mac Pro) to log into that account and it asks me for a password.  I type in the password I used for my Power PC.  It keeps telling me it is the incorrect password.
I cannot log into my user account RLE 5 on the Mac Pro.  I am being told I have the incorrect password. I've gone to System Preferences>Accounts and changed the password.  It doesn't make a difference.
Also I cannot log into the Guest User account that migrated from the Power PC to the Mac Pro for the same reason.  I have also tried to change the password for that Guest User account also but with no luck.
Another interesting thing has happened.  I decided to give my Mac Pro admin user account a password by going to System Preferences>Accounts.  But when I do a test to sign into my admin user account Mac Pro it tells me it is the wrong password.  Luckily I can reboot the computer and it opens to my Mac Pro user without asking for a password.  But if I log out of Mac Pro and try to then sign back in with the password it tells me it is the incorrect password.
    Any suggestions would be appreciated.

  • Migration Assistant created new account to deposit all my stuff, but I can't access that account, even after changing the password via the main acct'

I am at my wits end.  The migration assistant created a new profile (I didnt konw that it would do this) and now I can't get into that profile with all the stuff from my old PC.
I have tried changing password via the main account, but to no avail.  I have researched issues with Keychain, but all it tells me to do is change the login password - that doesnt work either - I cant get to all my files.

    Migraine Assistant it's called.
Delete the account from the main one, create a new account and transfer files manually via a regular FAT external drive you pickup at any office or computer store, Mac's can read it.

  • Migration Assistant Wrong Password problem

    Hi,
I cannot login after using Migration Assistant to move user account from iMac to MacBook Pro. I reinstalled system with erasing all previous data. So now I have one administrator account (the one I moved from another computer) password which works on previous computer doesn't work at laptop at all. I reinstalled system again (without erasing the disc). Password didn't worked again. Now after putting Install Disc and pressing "C" during restart laptop ejects the dvd...
Are there any other options ??? :-/
I've just read that different versions of system (both Leopard) may cause this problem but how to reinstall system now?
I've read that migrating from newer version might be a problem...
    Message was edited by: Igor_Szu

instead of using c, try holding down option. you want to hold down option right after the computer chimes. Keep holding option till it gives you choices like "Macintosh HD" and "Install DVD"
http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1274 explains how to use the system disk to restart the password. try clicking on "Resetting the original administrator account password." (assuming you can get the cd to work)
if you reset the admin password, and you can't login
try resetting the root password. reboot to the disk, choosing login as other user. user name "root", and what ever password you set root to.

  • Password not working after using Migration Assistant

Recycled my MacBook to my wife after reinstalling the OS so that it was a fresh machine. However, she wanted to have family photos /videos  on this machine so she has them locally if she takes machine out of house. So, I used Migration Assistant to transfer these from my mini-mac to the MacBook. Of course this meant I then became a named user the MacBook and the Photos/videos were transferred successfully over to my account.
When I log into the MacBook using the newly created account for my wife I of course cannot see the files transferred over in her directory but when I use Finder I can view the Users and can see the files have been transferred into my directory.
If I log out of my wife's acount and try to login to my account my password fails. Pretty sure I'm entering the correct password and the hint comes up with what looks like a valid hint. Can't be 100% sure as have so many passwords but irrespective if also states in the hint message that I can use my Apple ID to reset this passwordh which is what I'd lke to do to avoid confusion
Going back to the mini-mac I've gone to the Apple ID site (so my password to acccess this works) but cannot see how this allows me to reset a passord for a device.
Too be honest I thought the password for MacBook was my Apple ID Password but clearly not as it works to get access to manage my Apple ID
Hopefully I've explained in enough detail but let mw know if more needed

FIxed it myself. Logged in as wife went to System Prefs > Security and managed to change my passwrod from there. Seems a bit strange but hey it worked

  • Migration assistant built mac makes me validate apps with password, fix?

I built an Imac using Migration Assistant. Now when I run an app it prompts me to put in the password for the account I purchased the app. The error says that this app was purchased with a different account. Then I put in the password and the app works fine.
I guess I could build the computer from scratch, (yes, I know, I should of had a good backup).
The real reason I did it was that my laptop was not "upgraded" to Lion. So I wanted my Imac rebuilt the same way.
Any suggestions for fixing this problem?
    Thanks!

Anyone have a suggestion? I can call Apple I guess.
