Passwords for users listed in /etc/passwd

Do the predefined users listed in the /etc/passwd file have default passwords? The entry for each user password is *. Does this mean that the password is hidden or that it does not exist? In particular does the mysql user have a default password?
Any help would be most appreciated.
PowerPC G5   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

An entry with a single * means that the account's password is invalid, and therefore nobody can log into that account if a password is required to do so. More information is available in this article.

    What are the steps to find the password for users in dba_users as sysdba?
    It is in encrypted form ? How can I view it ?
    Pls tell in steps ?

    I asked for sysdba
    When he can change password why can't he view ?Can you see the users password on a windows domain? No
    Can you see the users password on a Unix box? No
    Can you see the users password on a mail server? No
    Why would it be different in Oracle?
    Why is hacking coming here ?Because it's something against the way the software works.
    This can, and is, dangerous to let the administrator (Oracle, MsSQL, Win*, Unix,...) know the users password for so many reasons. For example:
    . Privacy
    . Etiquette
    . Password reuse (password reused for Bank account, etc)
    . [insert a whole bunch of other good reasons I'm not going to bother writing]
    And anyway it is useless!

  • The POP server rejected the password for user

    Hi Im new to this forum but need help! I can usually fix most things on my mac but the last 2 weeks mail will not recieve any incoming messages as is just says "The POP server “mailin.macmail.com” rejected the password for user “****”
    I have looked at other postings and tried keychain etc but nothing will work. This happens with 2 accounts one from macmail and one from NTL (my ISP) I can send mail fine (no password) and can go on to webmail and get my messeages fine on both accounts.
    Does anyone have an answer for this?
    Many thanks

    Sorry I can't be of help, I know of others with this problem. In my case I have two accounts that don't work in Mail whilst the other accounts do. I suspect it may be a bug as I've been looking for a solution for sometime. My current solution is to collect the mail on those accounts with an XP netbook which is probably not very helpful!
    I have also tried the Keychain repair and at least for a short while it looked as if it had fixed it.
    Any ideas anybody before I go through the hassle of reinstalling everything?

  • Error msg: Sending of password for user did not succeed. Mail server responded: Not enough disk space - what's the deal?

    I've been checking my email via webmail for a week and am back in the office today. Fired up Thunderbird, expecting it to pick up all my email, but it gets nothing and tells me…
    Sending of password for user [email protected] did not succeed. Mail server pop.ipower.com responded: Not enough disk space
    Haven't seen this particular error message come up in searches via google and at mozilla. There's definitely disk space on my machine. I'm running TB on a Mac (OSX 10.6.8). Disk Space options under Preferences > Advanced let me assign up to 1024 mb for the cache, which I've done, and cleared.
    Has anyone encountered this before? Got a solve/troubleshooting process? Thanks!

    Thanks. I do compact regularly (TB prompts me to) and did it (several times) via Preferences today to try and get TB past this error message.
    Also went thru and Trashed + Empty Trashed as many messages as possible from the inbox, just in case. Still no-go.

  • The IMAP server ... rejected the password for user ...

    When I went to bed last night, Apple Mail (Lion, MacBook Pro) worked fine on my home IMAP server, as they have done for some time.
    This morning, I cannot log in and I now get the following error message:
    The IMAP server “...” rejected the password for user “...”.
    The password is definitely correct.  I have typed in the password repeatedly (although it was already correct) to no avail - I just get the same error message again.
    Since then, I have tried:
    my Linux laptop using Thunderbird
    my Xoom (running Android ICS) and K9
    my SGS2 (running Honeycomb) and K9
    my iPad 2 using IOS Mail
    Roundcube (webmail client) on the MacBook Pro itself (so no connectivity issues)
    and all still work perfectly.  There have been no changes to my mail server (which is Dovecot running on Debian Squeeze, which has been running flawlessly for years) and none to my MacBook Pro (unless they were silent).
    I have tried deleting all the relevant items from my keychain, but that has made no difference either.
    Any ideas because I'm stumped?

    Since I posted this, there has been more, but slightly different, weirdness.
    In the middle of a session yesterday, Apple Mail started to do something different.  When I typed in the password, it briefly worked (downloading one or two messages) and then the error dialogue box popped up again so clearly the password was always correct.
    A short while later, it accepted the password and stopped complaining until ten minutes ago.  This time I only had to type in the password once and it is working at the moment but who knows how long for?

  • Mail: The POP server rejected the password for user

    I am completely unable to use Mail.
    I keep getting the "The POP server rejected the password for user" on two of my accounts.
    The password has not changed and I have entered it correctly.
    The accounts just will not go online.
    This started yesterday when an old machine accidentally fired up mail and tried to connect using the same user details. Since then, my MacBook Pro is not able to connect to my mail.
    My iPad and my iPhone can. There is no problem at the server or the ISP. I have also run the Keychain repair utility.
    Please can you advise how I should fix it? Plist? Define the accounts again?
    Any ideas welcome.

  • Rejected password for user

    Hi
    I am having trouble with Mail. This is my second problem in as many days. Iam assuming that they are not wholly related so have started this new thread.
    See my other problem http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=762561&tstart=0
    As of this morning one of my email addresses (my main one) Comes up with this message...
    The POP server “xxx” rejected the password for user “xxx”
    Please re-enter your password, or cancel.
    (I put the "xxx" by the way)
    When I enter the password it is still rejected.
    I have also tried deleting the account and recreating a new one. But no joy.
    I have tried the same address under another user, and have no problem loging in via web mail.
    Any clues?
    Dual 2.7 G5   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   2.5GB RAM

    A reinstall should always be used as a final last resort.
    You can also delete the keychain entries for this account (with the Mail.app quit)and when re-launching and prompted by the Mail.app for the account's password, save what will amount to a new entry in your keychain for this account.
    In addition, check this link for system troubleshooting procedures and when doing so, follow all steps/instructions in the order provided.

  • Does today's hacker attack regarding stolen passwords for FB, Google, Twitter, etc. affect Macs?

    And is there a website that lists virus affecting Macs?

    Only if you if your password was one of those. It is important to remember the difference between passwords saved online and the security of your Mac. Your Mac is far more secure than any web server. The chances of getting any virus or hack on your Mac is virtually zero. Big web sites, however, typically don't have good security for user information and passwords. They get hacked on a regular basis.
    Unfortunately, the typical response is to install antivirus on your Mac which does nothing but make it slow and buggy and continuing to use poor security practices on the internet. Your Mac is safe. Keep that antivirus off. Never reuse passwords online. Use iCloud Keychain to generate more secure, and unique, online passwords.

  • Password for user admin

    Hello,
    I have to change the PW for user admin and tried to do this in the ERP/SU01 on every client.
    The connection to XI was lost. The error 'can not read exchange profile' occurred.
    I reset the password of user admin in all clients to default and entered the user admin and password in the http://<xi-host>:<j2ee-port>/exchangeProfile.
    This worked fine.
    But now I get the periodic error that user admin on client 200 is locked due to wrong logon and XI does not work. Error as described above
    Okay. I can unlock user admin, but the error occurs periodically.
    Is there a description how to change the PW for user admin and get rid of this error. I found a SAP Note (936093), is this the way to do it?
    I assume user admin is locked every time the portal fails to contact XI, but I am not sure.
    Best Regards
    Maximilian

    Try reflashing the firmware and see if that alleviates the issue.  If not call into 866-606-1866 for further troubleshooting.

  • How can i use exisitng user data(Id, password) for user mapping

    Hi All,
    For User mapping , we can import user mapping data for many users from user administration. and for each user
    we can maintain mapping data in the standard format.
    eg:
    [User]
    uid=user2
    $usermapping$:BCE:user=ext_user2
    $usermapping$:BCE:mappedpassword=password
    i am clear till this point.
    this all works if we know the userid and passowrd on the system 'BCE'.the passwords on the system 'BCE', are encrypted . so there is no chance for me to know the passwords.
    so how can i use the existed userid/passowrd on the system 'BCE' for the mapped user and mapped password on the portal while doing usermapping.
    Thanks in Advance,
    Lakshmi

    Hi,
    I think this should work.
    1. Setup SSO with SAP logon tickets first. How to do this is described many places, e.g. http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw04/helpdata/en/d3/41c8ecb31d11d5993800508b6b8b11/content.htm
    This SSO will not work at first, because the username is different in the back-end system. So what you need to do is to get the back-end username into the ticket (don't need a password because that is done by the SAP logon ticket)
    2. Create a portal component which uses the usermanagement API to create a usermapping which only consists of the username and a blank password. You can do this manually I think if you have no reference system defined.
    IUserMappingService umap =(IUserMappingService)PortalRuntime.getRuntimeResources().getService(IUserMappingService.KEY);
    //this is the currently logged in user. You might another user
    IUserContext user = request.getUser();
    //Get the existing data (think it can be null)
    IUserMappingData userMapping=umap.getMappingData(systemAlias, user);
    HashMap map = new HashMap();
                             map.put(IUserMappingService.UMAP_KEY_USER, backEndUserName);
    //add blank password               map.put(IUserMappingService.UMAP_KEY_PASSWORD, "");
    //store the values                    userMapping.storeLogonData(map);
    Voila, this should allow you to do SSO using SAP logon tickets, but with another name that you use against the portal. I am uncertain if this will work if you have multiple usermappings in the sap logon ticket
    PS since the sap logon ticket is issued at logon time, you need to relogon to get the changes done by the code
    Regards
