Passwords unlock secure system preferences
In past OS X systems I seem to remember that there was a 'Require password to unlock each secure system preference' option. In Yosemite this seems no longer to be the case, and there seems no longer to be an option to disable a password demand for individual applications (e.g. Energy Saver). I am finding it a nuisance to type in my password each time I need to change a preference, which at the moment I am having to do fairly regularly. Does anyone know whether there is a straightforward way of disabling this password requirement?
Linc, thanks very much for your swift response. Automatic Login is not enabled in my (administrator) account, but I was nonetheless required to enter a password each time I wanted to alter a preference. However, I found that unchecking, in 'Security & Privacy/General/Advanced', the 'Require an administrator password to access system-wide preferences' box has solved this problem.

Hi 'baltwo'
Thank you for your link, I already had been on this particular website this afternoon. they only discuss problems in the application and nothing about how the MS Office application installation does disturb Mac OS.
Or have I missed a special comment there?
In any case many thanks, trioloGo -
How to force unlock Security & Privacy Preferences

You are welcome.
Since Yosemite, Apple seems to have gone to requiring a password. -
How can I reset new password in .mac system preferences?
...so that I can upgrade to MobileMe. When I type in my new password and hit Enter, or click over to Sync, it insists on remembering the old password, and then I can't sync. The odd thing is, when I enter the new password into .Mac preferences I get "thanks for being a member" and the days remaining on my account. The new password also works to log me in online, but I can't change system preferences to perform the upgrade to MobileMe. The old .Mac link to iCal works--the info is up to date--but the MobileMe calendar, contacts, bookmarks, etc have no data.. Any ideas?
(I'm an only user using the admin. account (have one other account with unchanged original settings).OS X 10.7 Lion, 10.8 MountainLion & 10.9 Mavericks
Reset Password starting from Recovery HD

When you see the Apple logo, release the keys.
Wait until OS X Utilities window shows up.
Move the mouse to the menubar at the top and click "Utilities", then select "Terminal"
from the drop down.
Terminal window will appear.
Type in resetpassword and press enter on the keyboard.
Leave the Terminal window open.
Reset Password Utility window will open with Macintosh HD selected.
Select the user account from the popup menu box.
Enter a new password.
Reenter the new password for the user.
Enter a hint.
Click the "Save" button.
Click in the menubar and select Restart.

Locationd - Unable to turnoff in Security System Preferences
I've got this locationd daemon connecting to apple to two different addresses : mac-services.apple.com and iphone-wu.apple.com (the second of which is odd since I don't have an iphone. Firewall reports these connections.
Doing searches on the net comes up with an apple forum thread which is now archived : http://discussions.info.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2258059
In that thread, some guy jumps to apple defense pointing out that this was covered (more like buried) in the license agreement for Snow Leopard : http://images.apple.com/legal/sla/docs/macosx106.pdf
That document says under 4. Consent to Use of Data "... by disabling the Location Services setting in the Apple Software. The Location Services setting is found in
Security preferences within System Preferences."
However, the Security Preferences has absolutely nothing, zilch, for disabling this. You can go to Photobucket and upload it then use the html code to post, but you really don't need to do that, I believe you.
You may be able to repair this with The 10.6.4 Combo Update This is a fuller install, as opposed to an incremental "delta" update so it should overwrite any files that are damaged or missing. It does not matter if you have applied it before.
Remember to Verify Disk before update and repair permissions after update from /Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility.

How can i get my password of my system preference account?
hi everyone!
i want to ask an unusul question...
actually for i was downloading the ox x mountain lion. and after few hours it totally got downloaded in my mac. and then it asks me to TYPE MY USER PASSWORD! as far as i can remember that i never put an password for my mac. i have just put my user name in it so that everyone can use it without typing the password. so, here is the Big Problem... im not able to install the ox x mountain lion in my mac as it requests to change some setting after i type the password...!!!
so whenever i want to change someting in my mac it asks me the user pass! so guys! wat am i supposed to do now??? i dont understand cuz i have never used mac b4!You probably have your system set for what is called "automatic login", wherein no password is requied for the computer to completely boot to the lone administrator's desktop.
You can try to perform the function you are attempting by leaving the password box blank, but if it is insufficient, then you do have a password set, but just don't know it. To remedy the problem, you will need to reset the administrator password. After doing so, DO NOT LOSE this password. Of course you can simply reset it again, in the future, but it does mean that your Keychain, in which you store online passwords will be rendered useless, and you will have to start anew with a new keychain.
Here is how you reset the password for Lion.

Why is the security "lock" always open in (Network) System Preferences?
(+This may not be the correct forum, but here it goes anyway+)
I have a "1st Gen" iMac G5 (so, a PowerPC), running Tiger, 10.4.11
On the rare occasions that I open the Network options in the "System Preferences", I see that the "lock" at the bottom left is always (?) open.
Here is a screenshot of the "network preferences" with the open lock, just as it was when I opened the Preferences a little while ago tonight:
(Language is Dutch, my native language)
http://nl.tinypic.com/a/1ln35/3
Why is that "lock" (always) open? I am ab-so-lu-te-ly certain that I close the "lock" (on the rare occasions that I need to change something).
Is this a security risk?
How do I get this "lock" to stay closed?Ah...
Does the answer lay here?
http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=10314181
(...Go to System Preferences: Security. Check the box next to "Require password to unlock each secure system preference." Then lock Security.)
That option was not checked... I did so now and will see what happens.
(I found this just now, while reading another topic on this forum. Is it ok, if I leave my question & postings here?)

Systems Preferences Crashes When Changing Proxy Password
Hi everyone,
In the System Preferences, under the Proxies tab for a network configuration I am trying to remove the proxy password as it is no longer needed on my network. However everytime I attempt to uncheck the "Proxy server requires password" box the Systems Preferences application crashes. The same thing also happens if I attempt to simply change the proxy password. It is the HTTP proxy I am trying to change.
I'm going to include below the report generated when the application crashes. If anyone could suggest how to correct this problem that would be most appreciated.

It is only a problem when trying to change the account name of the Web Proxy. It crashes when saving on everyone of the 4 machines. We had similar issues when we upgraded to 10.4.8 with the proxy settings. It wouldn't maintain the changes to the settings so we downgraded back to 10.4.6. If anyone using 10.4.6 with proxy settings doesn't have this problem, please let me know.

System preferences panes will not unlock
I'm having an issue in OS 10.8.2 where I cannot unlock system preferences even when I use the correct password.
If it will not unlock even using the correct password, like Linc said check the caps lock etc and make sure you are using the computer login password, not an apple ID password. You can also try leaving it blank and see if that helps.
If it doesn't the next step would be try resetting the admin password and try again, which you can do through the Recovery HD. Hold Cmd/R as you are starting up till you get a screen asking you to select the language. Hit continue and you will get a screen that says Mac OS X Utilities. Click on Utilities on the menu bar at the top, select terminal. In the white box that comes up, type in resetpassword and press enter. You'll get a reset password dialog box. Select Mac HD (the volume where the user account you want to reset is located), choose the admin account, enter in the new password, verify it, hit save (you'll get a password reset successfully box) and the restart the computer and try unlocking the system preferences then. -
The Problem
Users are unable to change their password using System Preferences -> Users & Groups on a Mac that is connected to an LDAP server (specifically, OpenLDAP).
This error appears to be a result of OS X 10.7.4 now sending the username of the user rather than their full DN (e.g. it's sending bobsmith, notuid=bobsmith,ou=Users,dc=companyname,dc=com).
(a bug report for this issue has been filed with Apple and can be seen on OpenRader @http://openradar.appspot.com/11768796)
Steps to Reproduce:
Try to change the password using the System Preferences -> Users & Groups prefpane on Lion. It fails with the following error message:
The password for the account “bobsmith” was not changed. Your system administrator may not allow you to change your password or there was some other problem with your password. Contact your system administrator for help.
Expected Results:
The password should be changed.
Actual Results:
The error appears, and on the LDAP server, an error like the following is logged:
Jun 28 08:42:21 ldap3 slapd[7810]: conn=10518785 op=2 RESULT oid= err=21 text=Invalid DN
This error appears to be a result of OS X 10.7.4 now sending the username of the user rather than their full DN (e.g. it's sending bobsmith, notuid=bobsmith,ou=Users,dc=companyname,dc=com)
Notes: This was encountered by someone else over at the AFP548.com forums who ended up patching their LDAP server to resolve the issue. This shouldn't require patching LDAP to resolve, however. Lion needs to (at least have an option to) send the full DN of a user requesting to change their password, not the short username:
Text from above forum link (in case it is taken down):
So, I’ve got this OpenLDAP server with network home directories at home that all of my Mac machines authenticate to. Everybody can bounce around to whatever Mac is available. It works great.
Anyway, with Snow Leopard, I was able to change user passwords via System Preferences. However, that got broken when I upgraded to Lion (amongst other things). Both Snow Leopard and Lion send exop’s to the ldap server, but for whatever reason, the id is screwed up in Lion (or at least, it’s screwed up on the two machines at home I tested this with). Instead of sending the user’s DN, e.g. “uid=user,cn=users,ou=something,dc=somewhere,dc=com”, the ldap server is only sent the uid, e.g. “user”. The ldap server is expecting a DN here, so naturally, it fails with the error “Invalid DN”.
Bummer.
So, to work around that, I had to patch OpenLDAP (version 2.4.26 in this case). Now, when my server can’t resolve the id it’s given during a password change, it will look at the bind DN, and if the id string is contained within the bind DN string, it will just use the bind DN as the entry to change. I figured this would still allow me to manually specify password changes via an admin account while still giving users the ability to change their own passwords without having to point them at a webpage (lame).
I should point out that all my accounts have the uid as part of the DN… I guess if you were doing some kind of crazy SASL mappings, this might not work for you…
Anyway, here’s the patch in case anyone else is interested… If it works for you, great. If not, oh well.

UPDATE (still not working, though)
I tried to change my password with dscl too, like so:
$ dscl -u bobsmith -p /LDAPv3/ldap -passwd /Users/bobsmith
...and this generated the following after I input my current password and a new one:

On my OpenLDAP server, it generated:

Why is there no security panel visible in my system preferences?
Hi,
Please help...I do not have access to Security system preferences. Nothing loads and nothing is visible in system preferences. WHen I clicked a link to access it from help window a message told me it was missing or disabled (neither of which I was aware of). It also stated a '2 param error'.
I recently installed 10.6.8, and have assumed that all was present and correct until now!
ANy ideas?
AlanBackup your files off the machine and disconnect.
If you can't, try holding the shift key and booting see if that gets you in.
If you have backups then no need.
Reinstall 10.6 alone by (cleaning and polishing disk first) hold c booting off the 10.6 disk and simply installing, then reboot and run Software Update again to get to 10.6.8
See if that fixes your issue.
Some third party programs will require to be reinstalled.
Your files and most third party programs won't be touched, but try to backup your files because who knows what is going to go further wrong. -
After updating to mountain lion, icloud password has not been accepted by system preferences
After updating to mountain lion my icloud password in the system preferences has not been accepted anymore. I already changed the password. Also the new one is not accepted by the system preferences. On iPhone and online everything is fine. Any idea?
I just got off the phone with Apple Support. They say they are having problems with iCloud and this issue should be resolved in 3-4 hours. We'll see......

System Preferences-Network-Can't access
When I open Network I get a warning message "Nework setings have been changed by another appplication"
I cannot close the notice and therefore cannot read or change the settings. I usually keep the page locked, but notice it is unlocked.
I don"t know how long it has been like this.
Help!
Anthony342Hi Anthony342, and a warm welcome to the forums!
To stop the pop-up, Go to System Preferences: Security. Check the box next to "Require password to unlock each secure system preference." Then lock Security.

Safari Issues: not allowing access to settings and system preferences
I posted this somewhere else, but think it was the wrong place so am reposting here
In the last couple of weeks, I have tried to reset my homepage in safari as it has somehow changed from what I have always had to the following apple page. http://www.apple.com/startpage/ I did not choose for this homepage, and am guessing someone else has clicked on something and by accident ( not me).
I have gone into the internet and network section of system preferences and get a drop down message that these have been changed from an outside source. I click on ok to get out of that section and it will not close off and have had to force quit to get out of it. This has happened two or three times.
I have also tried to access safari help to see if there is another way to change the homepage and although I am able to search and get results I cannot access the actual topic content.
I have never come across this issue before and have no idea of what may be happening. has apple hijacked my homepage?Hi there,
