Paste Link i Numbers?

In Numbers I have not been able to find  the feature there is in Excel to copy and paste a function in one document (not only the value) to another. In Excel you copy the cell in Doc 1 and use "Paste Special" & "Paste Link" to transfer it to a cell in Doc 2. Is this possible in Numbers?

You can copy and paste a function to a separate document by selecting the cell, copying the function from the formula bar (above the document), then pasting that into the cell in the second document.
But you seem to be talking about establishing a link between the two documents. Numbers does not support links to external documents.

Barry

I use Numbers on my imac.  Now it tells me I need an update.  It no longer allows me to even see past projects.  Numbers 3.1 was installed on my computer on 1/25/14.  Can anyone help?

    A CAUTION
The article linked in YeOldMacFan's post gives the basic information. I would place some emphasis on these statements from the last two paragraphs:
"If you have no further need for the older version of the iWork application or the iWork suite on your Mac, you may delete the the application or the iWork suite by dragging the application or the iWork folder to the trash."
"[Keeping both versions] allows you to maintain consistent versions when collaborating with other people who may not have the latest iWork suite."
Collaboration with other people is not the only reason for keeping both new and old versions of Numbers (or Pages of Keynote) available.
The current versions were developed with the goal of improving compatibility between iOS, OS X and iCloud transferability of files, and many features supported in the '09 versions of these applications are NOT supported (yet) in the new versions. If you need these features for your work, then you still have a need for the older versions.
Any file opened, then saved from the new versions cn no longer be opened in the older version. Unsupported features may be removed on importing he file into the new version. The file may be exported from the new version as a Numbers '09 file, which may then be opened in Numbers '09, but unsupported features removed in the import to Numbers 3 will not be restored in the export.
Use your own judgement as to whether to keep of delete Numbers '09. My choice would be to keep it.
My personal choice has been to delay installing the new versions of Numbers Pages and Keynote until support for more of the 'missing' features has been restored.

  • Copy and paste Values from Numbers to Pages

When I do simple copy and paste content from Numbers to Pages, I get a formula error message. All I want to copy and paste the values only, not the formulas, but on pages I cannot find a way to paste values only. When it tries to paste formula, it errors because some of the formulas references to other sheets on Numbers. What is the easy way to get values from Numbers tables to pages without passing formulas.
Or better yet! Is there a way to link tables to pages like charts with refresh capabilities so I don't have to copy and paste values to pages document every time Numbers table values changes?

    J,
There is no Paste Special in OSX, anywhere. You can Paste Values from the Edit menu in Numbers when that would be necessary.
In such cases where you would use Paste Values in Numbers, you can use Paste and Match Style in Pages for the same result.
Sometimes it's so obvious to Pages what should be done that it will give you what you need automatically, but sometimes you need to use Paste and Match Style to get the values rather than an error triangle.

  • How can i paste text from Numbers too Pages without getting the box/frames?

I have a big list in numbers with a lot of text in each line. I need to copy/paste it in to a pages document but i don't want the frames to come along.

    Hi Carl,
Pasting from a Numbers table into Pages will paste a table (frames). There is no "Convert Table to Text" command in Pages 5.
Paste into TextEdit. That will strip all formatting (including the table) and leave plain text. If your Numbers table had more than one column, the text will become Tab-Delimited. Before you paste into TextEdit, make sure the blank document is plain text (if you see Make Rich Text under the Format menu, you have a plain text document).
Select All, Copy, then Paste into Pages.
    Regards,
    Ian.

  • How do you copy an equation from grapher and paste it into numbers?

Hi, my free trial for Mathtype ran out but I still need to be able to write equations and copy them into pages and numbers for my coursework. Is there a free alternative to Mathype that also carries out this function? Or, alternatively, is there a way to copy an equation from the grapher app that comes with Macs and paste it into numbers/pages. Thank you.

select the equation in Grapher, copy
click in a Numbers sheet, paste

  • Paste Link 'Outline Level' from Excel into Project get error

I am trying to generate a MS Project schedule based on linked data in an Excel spreadsheet. I cannot get the summary project tasks to appear with their sub-tasks. When I try to paste link the Outline Level into Project, I get and error that states
"The paste link operation failed. You cannot paste into a field that project calculates automatically." However, I can manually type the Outline Level into the project and it changes the task-subtask relationships as it should. How can I get this
    to work?

This error just means that you can’t paste a link just anywhere you like, just as you can’t type data into just any cell. change the excel data source schedule without calculate. see the link:

  • Copy & paste links to pictures

On my desktop computer I copy & paste links to pictures from my Photobucket page on threads at different Forums. I don't know how to do that on the iPad. How do you copy & paste?

What user's guide are you referring to? I have a iPad user guide bookmark, is that the one you are referring to?
It looks like to me that is only referring to cut & paste when in Mail.

  • Link between Numbers and mail

Tonight, I was making an address list of Club Members, using NUMBERS, instead of a DATABASE. In one of the columns I was entering their E-mail addresses. Even before I finished typing the address, the Apple Mail opened up and was waiting for me the verify the address. It seems there is some kind of a link between Numbers and Mail.
Has this happened to anyone else?

Open your address book and drag a whole group into a blank space on a numbers sheet.
You will get Last Name, First Name, phone number and email address already in a table. Just add anything else you require.
Lots of neat shortcuts in Numbers

  • I cannot paste links to my hotmail email account

I am unable to paste links in my hotmail emails while using Firefox.

In the Hotmail editor there is a button to create a hyperlink on the button toolbar, just above the text area where you compose a new message.<br />
That button has a tooltip Insert Hyperlink (looks like a sphere with a chain below it).

  • Paste delimited into numbers

Hey, is this possible with the iOS version? I copied tab-delimited lines to paste them into Numbers, and they all went into a single cell, didn't even break the lines into different cells. Is there some way to do this?

It's not a CSV file, it's a word document. It seems like Numbers is offerring fewer and fewer options, I had no trouble doing this back in iWorks. It's nothing more than a tab-delimited file, which any spreadsheet on the market can import.
Desktop Numbers sort of does it, but it treats tabs as new lines, so everything goes into one column.
If I remember properly, it's been a while, Numbers could do this before they made everything compatable across platforms, which took everything to the lowest common denominator.

  • Copy and paste limit for Numbers?

I am copying the NFL schedule from the NFL.com website into Numbers. However, I cannot paste after week 4 and it is only 77 rows in. I get the doinking sound when I try to paste week 5.....Is it because of memory as there are links? Is there something I turn off or on to allow me to do this.
I would like to fit the whole season schedule into one document.

I went to the regular season schedules at NFL.com and copied several weeks worth of the schedule. Pasting all that into a table gives me only the first week (TEN@PIT is first, SD@OAK is last). Pasting onto the canvas (not into a table) creates one table per week plus a text box of byes. I didn't try the entire schedule but I did do through week 11. There were extraneous tables for the "return to top" lines at the bottom of each week (which need to be deleted) and the schedule tables overlap each other so they need to be rearranged. Otherwise it pasted okay for me.
I copied the tables from NFL.com like I would copy text; click, hold, drag down to select the text. Are you copying it a different way? Or are you pasting into Numbers a different way?

  • Linking a numbers spreadsheet in a keynote page

I created and saved a spreadsheet in Numbers.
I copy a portion of a spreadsheet in numbers.
I then paste it on a page in Keynote.
    I save the Keynote file.
I then make changes in Numbers.
The changes do not show in Keynote.
There is no REFRESH button anywhere in keynote.
Event when i select the linked spreadsheet in keynote.

Thanks Michael. I am finding this really hard to explain even though it's so simple. I have my passwords on a numbers spreadsheet. I password protected it. Every time I try to open it on my macbook it asks for a password. This is what I want. I open it, I update it. I close it, I want to update it again, it asks for the password again, I input the password, I update the sheet, I close it. I dont close it by opening another sheet or not worrying about it because my laptop is password protected, I hit the "X" in the top rught hand corner and close it.
Now, on my ipad I cannot do the equivlemt of clicking on the "X" in the top right hand corner as the "X" does not appear on Numbers on the iPad?
That is my question, not how to mask it by opening another sheet or looking for a work around like password protecting the iPad so it doesn't matter that the spreadsheet is still open. Just, how do I Close (X out) of a Numbers spreadsheet when it's open in my iPad?
I would really appreciate anyone helping me on this and thank you to the 2 people who have tried.

  • Dynamically linking a Numbers graph into Pages document

I want to creat a Pages 5.2 document that uses a graph made in Numbers 3.1 -- I see that the older versions of iWork allow for this. Can anyone help me do this, I would really appreciate it. Thanks Tom.

The Link feature is gone. You can use the old version and have the feature you miss, or you can soldier on with the new one. Numbers is still the best place to build and edit Charts. Once you have Pasted the Chert into Pages, you can activate the chart and click on Edit Chart Data to expose the underlying table. Then you can Paste the new data, copied from Numbers, to update the Pages chart.

  • Copy and Paste Spreadsheet in Numbers 3.0 to Pages 5.0

I have a spreadsheet that I need to copy from Numbers 3.0 into Pages 5.0. I have tried to copy and paste to no avail. I have exported as a .pdf and it is blurry when I paste it into the pages document. Does anyone know how I can get this spreadsheet into my Pages 5.0 document?

    Hi Hans,
I can get a reference error here if the destination table does not have that range available while the source table does.
Are you sure your desination table has exactly the same structure and dimensions as your source table?
If it does, copy/paste via the Formula Editor should work. It works reliably here.
Also the formula in your latest post looks as if it might be corrupted-- lots of extra spaces (it seems).  Did your orginal formula have those?
To sort this out, suggest turning off 'Use header names as labels' in Preferences.
If you end up with a formula in a cell as just Text (as Ian describes that's what happens when you copy from Numbers 2) you can convert that text to a formula by double-clicking the cell, clicking just before the text so that the insertion point appears in front of it and typing =. That activates the Formula Editor with the formula in it, which you can accept by clicking the green checkmark or hitting return.

  • How to get past links that need java (well aware no java for ipad2)

New ipad2 for Christmas... First (only) frustration was lack of flash/streaming video, had done some research beforehand but hoped/assumed would get around this issue with third party software... Which I have in some cases cut sites like Hulu still will mot stream...
BUT NO JAVA???!!!   ie: sites as basic as time.gov have been around forever and depend on java.... It's like oxygen for some sites...
So.... Anyone... Any remedies found? Will go into chat to discuss specific third party software if necessary.
    Thanks in advance.

    Thanks Jim,
I was just giving time.gov as an example... Specially I am frustrated by a movie site I frequent that the link to the host is a java "button", so dowmloading (photon) an app to get me past the flash issue (FYI, all, works kinda sorta on some sites, bit I wouldn't recommend even though it's only $5) didn't get me anywhere because the link to the host site is java....
    Aaarrrrggghhhh
Ill continue looking for a remedy but am just frustrated by these issues... All issues between adobe (flash) and java...
