Paste notes in Piano Roll changes Region size

Hi,
When I copy/paste a note in the piano roll, using cmd+C, cmd+V, it also changes the Region size. Which is not convenient at all.
When I do it with alt+mouse, it works perfectly fine. But I work mainly with keyboard commands.
Also, sometimes it even creates a new region on its own.
I am on LogicPro X 10.0.1, OS X 10.8.4, iMac 2.5 Ghz, 16 Gb RAM.
I saw similar questions already, but no answer yet.

You shouldn't have an issue...doing what you are doing.. and I cannot recreate it here..
But an alternative would be to simply copy the Region itself in the Arrange window....
Hold Down the Option key and drag region using mouse or trackpad....

Copy and Paste Disabled in Piano Roll

HI All - this is probably something very basic, but I can't do a simple 'copy and paste' in the piano roll view of MIDI events. If I select a group of events on a drum track and then select Copy, the Paste command is greyed out, i.e. the events are not being copied to the Clipboard. I don't know what setting or preference I could have changed that makes such a basic functionality unavailable. Any tips?

??? Copy and Paste works perfectly in the Piano Roll editing.... unless you're using the new standard (somewhat lame) single screen editing function in early versions of Logic 9... it's a shame they made this the default behavior.
Next time you wish to have all the the editing functions in the Piano Roll (formerly Matrix) editor hold down the Option key when Dbl clicking on a MIDI region. The Piano Roll will open in a floating window that has full editing functions...
Upgrade to 9.1.3 as this has been fixed, why are you using older versions of the program? You have Intel machines, right?

Why are midi notes in piano roll lower volume when selected with pointer than when in playback?

I'm using Logic X on mac mini. When I select midi notes in piano roll with the pointer, they are at a lower volume than when in playback? I use Logic X on mac mini with Apogee Duet.

Thanks for your help Erik. I found the answer you posted about 30 minutes after posting my question. To me it doesn't answer my question 100%. The reason is that I can't expect to believe that every time someone records midi they have to go through all these extra steps to merge it (and it is not easy to do because they are hidden behind one another) in fact my problem was so unique that other logic users didn't understand why I am having this trouble. SO that brings me to my conclusion, that I have some setting that is keeping this from being a seamless operation and transforming it into a bunch of hoop jumps. Thoughts? Could it have to do with record settings of "merge"? I saw a few different settings there but none make sense to me.

Why are my piano roll changes not being bounced down? Help!

I'm trying to make some minor changes to a click track sound. Just moved it down a key in piano roll, but no matter what I do, it doesn't seem to take in the final bounce down. Any ideas anyone?

Think of the arrow pointing from large to small, so the wide fat or large end of the arrow is at the top and the sharp pointy or small end is at the bottom. So it will sort from large to small and alaphbetically Z is larger than A. Click the Name bar and the arrow will reverse with sharp pointy end, small, at the top and large fat end at the bottom so it will now sort A to Z, as A is deemed to be smaller than Z.

Color Code Midi Notes on Piano Roll?

Can you color code midi notes in Logic Pro's piano roll/key editor? (I.e., can you make all C's red, C#'s blue, etc.?)
I'm tempted to jump from Cubase to Logic, but I need this feature.

Why do you ask?
I've learned to 'read' my color coding in Cubase -- just like I read ordinary notation (red, yellow, green = C Major, for example). This way I don't need to open a score editor or Sibelius when I work.
Anyway, can't be done in Logic as far as I can see; too bad.

Gluing 2 MIDI notes in piano roll view...is this not possible any more?

I am experiencing some very unusual behavior in version 8 - such as no longer being able to use the "glue" tool in Matrix edit mode (now called piano roll) to glue two MIDI notes of the same pitch together into one note.
Has anyone been able to get this to work?
I have to say, on a broader level, this program does not feel like it used to. Up until ver. 7, the program just seemed to do what I expected it to do...there always seemed to be many ways to accomplish something. It seemed like I never would need a manual because whatever I tried to do in the most logical way always seemed to work. The app feels more rigid now. I guess I just need to re-learn this software.

I have no idea. But I've seen the "try it once try it twice " thing happen since Logic 4.

Pages Copy & Paste Style Buttons don't change font size and style?

Shouldn't the font size and style also be copied and pasted when I use the buttons to copy & paste the style within a page?

It seems that the description of these buttons in the Help is not clear.
After several attempts, one may understand that they don't apply to attributes inserted "by hand" with cmd + B for instance but to "styles" defined in the Styles drawer.

Pasting from Word into PDF changes graphic size?

I send PDF newsletters to customers who like to be able to add their own logo or a sentence at the bottom.
In the past (Acrobat 8 and earlier), I would save the PDF as User Enabled. The customer could then copy a graphic or text from a Word document and paste it into the PDF.
Now, in Acrobat 9, with Enable for Commenting or Extend Features, the customer can still paste graphics or text, but it makes the pasted item enormous! For example, the word "Hello" is typed in MS Word at 12 pt Times Roman, and copied. When it is pasted in the PDF it becomes about 48 pt and distorted in proportion. Likewise a 7-inch banner graphic in Word becomes huge and overflows the page when pasted into a PDF.
This didn't used to happen. Any suggestions for a fix? Is there a Preference I need to set? A different way I should Enable for Commenting?

There does not seems to be any preference that can be set. Clipboard text or images are placed as stamps.
One option for people who just need to paste text would be for them to insert a text comment field and paste their formatted text from Word there. (The reason to paste from Word is because the formatting will be maintained.)
Your customers may want to consider making their own custom stamp for their logo and/or any standard text that they want to appear on your newsletter. If they had their logo and text set up in Word, they could create a pdf using Acrobat.com or another free service. In Reader, they could use that pdf to define a custom stamp. A custom stamp would eliminate cutting and pasting and could be resized easily. The stamps could only be used in pdf documents that have commenting enabled, but they would not have to create a custom stamp for each newsletter – previously made stamps would be available to use in future newsletters.

Select all notes in *Piano Roll Editor,* select *Velocity tool,* then *option-shift drag* any note.
or:
Select all notes in *Event Editor,* option-shift drag any one value in the velocity value column.

Problem with piano roll view

This might have been fixed in the update that's just installing, but when I double click on a note in piano roll, instead of all the notes from all the regions showing, nothing happens. I've looked for 'show selected regions only' and that option isn't even in the 'view' menu. Am I looking in the wrong place?
Switching from 7 to 8 is a bit of a headache, and no mistake.

In 8 if you click the note on the keyboard on the left of the Piano Roll Editor it will select all those particular notes in the region. If you double click on the note it opens the Event Edit page on the Arrange page left side.

(Note that if you change the size of text, it won't reflow, so you end up with a mess. Answer is, probably not useful)

Changing the size of the bevel photo box in Aperture 3

Does anyone know how I can change the size of the bevel photo box that comes with the Formal-Soft cover-medium theme. Aperture 3 is not allowing me to change the size. I would like to make it larger. I can not add a bevel bevel photo box. I have done the change with Aperture 1 before.

(If the link gets removed, do an internet search for "aperture 3 book theme trick" (without the quotes) and you'll get it. The "original article" referenced is essential reading -- at least the part on how to make a copy of a theme so one can play with it. Note that Aperture has to be restarted if you create the theme copy while Aperture is running. I've made the suggested change, but it's not taking effect. I'll experiment more and report back, but I thought others might like to know there is a possible solution.

Automation in Piano Roll

I'm trying to find out the easiest way to apply FX via automation to single notes that are played into Piano Roll i.e. How would I add an effect to a singe note at the end of a melody for example?

You can automate an fx send (done in the arrangement, not the piano roll) Or you can divide the part onto 2 tracks, one with the fx and one without.

Logic Pro X. Right-click not working in the piano-roll editor. And colour issues.

I usually use the right mouse-button to open the toolbox under the cursor but this doesn't appear to work within the piano-roll edit window in Pro X. Is this the same for everyone? The right-click works in all other windows. Seems pretty odd.
Also is it just me who finds the near-black background very oppressive? I worked in front of Pro X for several hours yesterday and was left wishing I could change the background colour of the main and edit windows. Is there any way to do this?
I also really need to be able to access custom colours for the colour palette as the new palette doen't sit at all well with me. Any ideas anyone? The manual states that if you double-click on a colour it should open the colour editor but it doesn't.....

It turns out that if you assign the right button to 'Open Tools and Shortcut Menu', it works in the piano roll. It's obviously a bug which should get ironed out.
The other thing that's driving me nuts though is that when I change tools in the main window, the pointer still appears like an arrow, even though its function has changed. When I pass it over a region, it usually changes to to the correct icon - but not always! Aarghhh I'm going back to Pro 9 for now......
