Pasting files into Illustrator

Hi, I am running Illustrator CS 11.0.0 on a MacBook Pro OS 10.6.7. I am suddenly having problems copying and pasting files from some graphic applications (DeltaGraph and Prism) into an open Illustrator file. I used to be able to do this easily. Is this a problem with the clipboard files? Would upgrading to a later version of Illustrator help?  Thanks for any help.

rvanetten,
In case of sudden misfunction, you may consider resetting the preferences, Cmd+Option+Shift (or reversibly Move the folder ).

  • Can not import PhotoShop CS3 files into Illustrator CS3

Worked just fine yesterday. I can place a JPG. I typically just drag a PSD into Illustrator. I now get an error message sayng it can not read the file. I have tried placing the file and nothing happens (no messages or warnings).
I tried saving the PSD as a TIF, but no luck here either.
I have tried opening a new file and dragging various PSD files in. It seems that none of the work any longer.
    And yes I've rebooted.

I have the exact same problem. I haven't placed PSD files into Illustrator for quite a while, but I just tried it this morning and it doesn't work (just like the OP). I even opened a file about a year old, which used to work just fine, but now the PSD file doesn't appear and I can't re-import it. So it has to be some issue recently introduced.
@Galumph - I have Vista x64 and 8GB of RAM. Is there a specific issue that applies to this particular combo?

  • CS4 bringing photoshop layered files into illustrator - blending modes

    Hello.
I have a layered photoshop file that is being brought into illustrator. One layer is a drop shadow and is set to multiply within photoshop. The drop shadow is NOT an effect. It's just a plain layer of a drop shadow. When I bring it into illustrator it doesn't act as if it is set to multiply when placed over my illustrator object. I know it's easy enough to make the shadow within illustrator and set the blending mode there but I would like to know why this is not working.
Thanks in advance for the help.

Illustrator's blending math is not the same as Photoshop's -- there will be differences if you import/export layered data between the apps.

  • Is it possible to import a .idea file into Illustrator CS3?

I have sketches and files on Adobe Idea on the iPad. How to I bring them into Illustrator and preserve the layers, etc? .png, .pdf and .jpg don't seem to do this. I'm sorry if this is a "no duh" question, but I am just starting out with these programs and would appreciate the help. The question didn't turn up in a forum search.
    Thank you in advance!
    ~Anna

    Mr. Zimmerman,
Thank you for taking up six post spaces on this forum question. Obviously I haven't read any of the app information, or subscribed to the adobe cloud, or searched the forums, despite having used those to discover this problem. Perhaps I should have underlined the program name that I mentioned in my original post, and the file formats I listed, which are only available if downloaded from the cloud, so that you could have more easily understood my question. I should have included Google link for the application so you wouldn't have to waste time looking it up for yourself. Maybe I should have mentioned that I called support and they suggested that I post in the forums to see if anyone else had gotten around the problem.
Also, sadly, the link doesn't answer my question. You seem to think that I am simply trying to export files. I have demonstrated in my original question and my reply to a previous answer, that I have already exported in every file available for use with the app and the cloud. I was asking, since I need to clarify, why .idea files would not open in Illustrator CS3, and why, when other file formats were tried, did they not preserve the layers. Also, since they wouldn't, was there another way to export besides the -listed- export file formats that would allow layers. And, as before when I tried a search in the Adobe Ideas forum, there was no answer to how to open an idea file in CS3, or preserve the layers in CS3 in any of the other file formats offered.
I am sorry that you misunderstood my question.
    Have a lovely day!

  • Colour shift when placing PSD files into illustrator

    Hi there
I have tested this issue on CS 3,4 and 5.
bascially if I create a CMYK document with a colour image and save this down as a psd file with the coated Fogra 39 embedded in it. If I create a new file within Illustrator with the same colur management and place the psd file into the document and check the link option (so it is a linked file), the colour shifts when using the colour picker. If I print the document from each APP they visually look different as well.
If I place the psd into illustrator without selecting the link option the colour has the same CMYK values as the psd within Photoshop and also prints correctly.
i can only assume that there is an option somewhere in regards to the "link" option and how this changes tha colour values somewhere? If not is there anyway I can get around this issue so I can use linked files without the CMYK values changing?
    Thanks in advance
    Paul

    Hi guys
    Thanks for the responses.
I use bridge to blanket the colour settings so this i feel this is not the issue here. If you have a moment and would kindly create a colour tint within PS of what ever colour, save this down as any format and place this into illustrator with the link checkbox checked you will see the colour data has physically changed for the CMYK values. This results in the prints looking different as well. If you deselct the link check box when placing the file the CMYK values are the same.
I tried the overprint preview option. This changes the viewable colour on screen but not the CMYK data of the file.
There seems to be a fundamental floor with this link option for some reason.
I might have phone Adobe direct for this iisue as I cannot find a fix for this.
    Many thanks

  • Importing Photoshop files into Illustrator CS3

I'm running into a problem in Illustrator CS3 when I try and import a native CS3 Photoshop file. If I try and place the file as a linked file I get an application error stating that there was insufficient virtual memory. And, if I select cancel I get a run time error and Illustrator crashes.
If I try and embed the file I get the same results. It doesn't seem to matter what the file size is and .tif's work just fine up to huge sizes 100Mb+.
As to the system I'm running Windows Vista Ultimate (x64) 8Gb of ram, two SCSI drives with virtual ram assigned to both so memory issues, well, shouldn't be issues.
    Anyone got any ideas?

Ok, so ADOBE needs to get up off their a$$e$ and address this problem, However some of you guys make it sound like its the end of the world... Here's a way to go around it in the meantime- at least this is how my PC is reacting (you might not be as lucky, but worth a try)
After getting my "insufficient virtual memory" error, try closing Illustrator down and then open the file from the OS window (not from within illustrator or browse)by double-clicking the file you'll automatically open Illustrator,it might take a couple of tries but after my second attempt it opened my file (took a little long) and I got a different error message "there was an error with the embeded file what do you want to do - replace file, correct file, ignore file, cancel" (msg not verbatim but close - not at my comp right now)
Then just ignore the files delete the links (they'll show up as blank boxes) If your just using those embedded psd's for previewing purposes you'll just have to save a flattened tiff everytime you make a change and keep saving over that same tiff so illustrator will automatically update it to you illustrator file.
sorry for the long post, but hopefully it helps ease the pain!

  • Need help placing files into Illustrator, Indesign and opening in Photoshop

For some reason Illustrator and Indesign CS2 won't go further than the iPhoto Library icon in my "place files" window and Photoshop won't go further than that either when opening files. This was not a problem with the previous version of iPhoto. Exporting singular photos is a pain in the rear, as I use hundreds of photos for my website and advertising. Is there something simple I'm missing?

This may be of some help:
Using Photoshop (or Photoshop Elements) as Your Editor of Choice in iPhoto.
1 - select Photoshop as your editor of choice in iPhoto's General Preference Section's under the "Edit photo:" menu.
2 - double click on the thumbnail in iPhoto to open it in Photoshop. When you're finished editing click on the Save button. If you immediately get the JPEG Options window make your selection (Baseline standard seems to be the most compatible jpeg format) and click on the OK button. Your done.
3 - however, if you get the navigation window that indicates that PS wants to save it as a PS formatted file. You'll need to either select JPEG from the menu and save (top image) or click on the desktop in the Navigation window (bottom image) and save it to the desktop for importing as a new photo.
This method will let iPhoto know that the photo has been editied and will update the thumbnail file to reflect the edit..
NOTE: With Photoshop Elements 6 the Saving File preferences should be configured: "On First Save: Save Over Current File". Also I suggest the Maximize PSD File Compatabilty be set to Always.
If you want to use both iPhoto's editing mode and PS without having to go back and forth to the Preference pane, once you've selected PS as your editor of choice, reset the Preferences back to "Open in main window". That will let you either edit in iPhoto (double click on the thumbnail) or in PS (Control-click on the thumbnail and seledt "Edit in external editor" in the Contextual menu). This way you get the best of both worlds

  • Importing CAD files into Illustrator CS3 - does'nt scale dashed lines

In CS2 you could import a CAD file and it would scale dashed lines.
In CS3, Illustrator no longer does this. It scales the stroke weight, but does not recognize the dashed line information.
Is there a solution to this?
    Thank you

You can expand dashed lines first and then scale them.
Then you will get a whole bunch of vector objects, one for each dash.
I am not very familiar with CAD, but I know that imported CAD files are sometimes fiendishly difficult to edit because vector lines are often in small pieces that don't join up properly.
So I reckon Expand on all lines and then judicious Unite in Pathfinder would probably be the best way of going about things. Unite makes Compounds of closed paths so you have to be careful, otherwise you might get a huge file that won't print without splitting.
But remember that once you've expanded the lines you won't be able to edit their weight.
    Does this help?

  • Can We Paste Photoshop Smart Objects Into Illustrator (as Linked/Embedded)?

Since raster editing is much more limited in Illustrator, is there a way to link or embed an individual Smart Object from Photoshop into Illustrator? I know there is an option to Place a file into Illustrator. But what if I have a larger Photoshop document with many Smart Objects in it, and just want to copy and paste one of those into Illustrator, but also have it update when I update it in Photoshop. Is this possible?

Copy and Paste won't have a link to the original file. Only Place can have that.

  • Why do I get jumbled text when pasting a graph from Excel (mac 2011) into Illustrator cs6

The Goal: To copy a graph from Excel (mac 2011) and paste it into Illustrator cs6 as a vector graphic.
The graph's vector and layout is okay. Yet, the text / copy is jumbled text:
    $%"
    $#!!!!"
Do I have to change a preference in either Excel or Illustrator?
    Thank you!

In Excel, right click and choose Format Chart Area. In the dialog at the left, choose Fonts. Change the font to Arial or something other than Calibri (Theme Body). Then copy/paste.

  • Placing photoshop eps's into Illustrator - file size

I used to place very large/high res photoshop eps files into Illustrator (as low res proxy) and it would allow my Illustrator file size to stay very small, however, once I switched to CS5 I noticed the way I was saving the eps's wouldn't show up in Illustrator, it would show as an empty box until I resaved the eps with tiff preview and jpg encoding.  But this makes my Illustrator file huge which is not what I want.  Does anyone that creates large scale graphics know what I'm talking about?  Thanks

This setup has been working for years…
Does that mean that you don't even plan to update Photoshop CS to CS6 13.0,6?  That would be a grave mistake.  There were many substantial bug fixes along the way.
Updating to CS 13.0.6 is completely, totally free.  No expense at all.
If your issue appeared "suddenly", delete and recreate your Photoshop and your Illustrator's preferences.
But update to 13.0.6 ASAP.  There's absolutely no excuse and no valid reason for staying with known buggy versions.  That's just plain nonsense.
If you insist on staying with your "setup" for the reason you state, please don't bother addressing any replies to me.

  • How to convert a .psd file into .ai (adobe illustrator)

    Hi Guys,
I have a very high quality multi layer .psd file that I need to convert to adobe illustrator in order to export them into autocad.
As I'm very in exprienced, Ive tried to merge the layers in the psd file and then use Export -> 'Path to Illustrator', however when I open the newly created .ai file, it open a dialog box called 'Convert to Artboards' and whatever option i choose (either Legacy Artboard or Crop Area(s)' my new illustrator file seems to be empty.
I appreciate any file anyone can offfer.

    Importing PSD files into Illustrator
       •   Opening PSD files into Illustrator
    1.  Turn on your computer and launch the Illustrator program.
    2.  Open a new document by clicking File>New in Illustrator’s menu bar.
    3.  To open your Photoshop document, go to File>Open and then select the document you want to open when prompted.
       •   Placing PSD files into Illustrator (Editable)
This method is ideal if you wish to incorporate a Photoshop document within an existing Illustrator document which can then make the PSD file editable within Illustrator.
    1. Launch the Illustrator program, select File>Place
    2. Locate the PSD file you want to import and click “Place”. Make sure the “Link” option is not selected.
Placing or opening an unlinked Photoshop file will prompt a dialog box with options, choose the most appropriate option and then click “OK”.
    • Convert Layers to Objects: This option will convert the Photoshop layers into Illustrator objects to be able preserve masks, transparency and blending modes.
                                 • Flatten Layers to a Single Object: This option will flatten all the Photoshop layers into a single layer to preserve the look and appearance of the image; however individual Photoshop layers will no longer be editable.
       •   Placing PSD files into Illustrator (Not Editable)
This method is ideal for incorporating your Photoshop files in an existing Illustrator document. Although the PSD file will no longer be editable it will be able to maintain a link to your original Photoshop file.
    1. Launch the Illustrator program, select File>Place.
    2. Locate the PSD file you want to import and click Place. Make sure the Link option is selected.

**The one time it did not work for me and appeared black was because of shadows (hue/saturation adjustment layer). So I compared the old .psd file, that converted fine, to the current one I was trying got send. One of the differences was the introduction of shadows by duplicating the fonts and image shapes, then merging them to a single image with hue/saturation adjustments. When adjusting the hue/saturation, it appears in a separate layer that was locked to next to image that was just produced. Some reason that was the bug that kept Illustrator from placing the .psd file in Illustrator. The solution was to merge the hue/saturation layer with the image layer. Now it’s back to normal.
Hope this save you some time.
