Pasting vectors from Fireworks to Photoshop as smart objects

I'm trying to copy a vector object from Fireworks CS5 to Photoshop CS5, I want to past it as a Smart Object.
I tried:
- Normal copy and paste to PS: gives me a bitmap in PS
- Copy as Vectors in FW > paste in PS gives me the paste option palette. When selecting Smart Object, I get an error:
"Could not place because the parser module cannot parse the file."
- Pasting the Fireworks vector object in Illustrator, then copying and pasting it in PS works fine, I can paste it as Smart Object.
This should be straighforward, and used to work in CS3...
Can anybody confirm this bug/problem?

I am copying and placing InDesign photo silhouettes and placing them into a Photoshop document for an online graphic.
I believe that the color holds up very well. It's when the JPG goes through a CMS ingest that the colors warp. A photo technician is able to correct the color.
I just need to get some insight on my process that (I think) I invented - since I don't see any discussions or videos online that back me up.
Any thoughts - or who could I access that might have an answer for me.

You haven't invented anything. Your server-side processing (based on something involving ImageMagik with PHP most likely) is simply stripping/ ignoring color profiles and converting the colors. This is very much the same issue as in your other post - your procedures just don't realyl make sense and you're basicalyl screwing yourself by using this methodology.

Pasting Smart Object from Illustrator to Photoshop Creates "Blank" Object

Hi,
I just upgraded to Creative Suite 5.5 from CS 4. Prior to the upgrade, I was able to select objects in Illustrator, copy, and paste them as smart objects in photoshop without any problem. Now when I paste them Photoshop correctly recognizes the dimensions, but when the object is inserted it's completely empty. I've checked the fill and opacity for the pasted layer (both are at 100%). I've applied color overlay blending effects but there's nothing there. It's totally empty. I'm able to copy and paste images from my web browsers and from the system (Mac Lion) clipboard by taking screenshots, but I cannot paste anything from Illustrator. It's just empty.
Note: I've been using Photoshop for over a decade, so it's not a "I don't know how to copy-and-paste" issue. I've also confirmed that Illustrator's file handling and clipboard preferences are set to PDF and AICB. I've also done a complete uninstall of CS 4 and CS 5.5 (including deleting preferences), and reinstalling CS 5.5. But it hasn't fixed the problem.
I've Googled this for almost an hour without any luck at finding a solution or even anyone who's having this problem. Anyone out there who can shed some light on what the solution might be?

Attempts to paste into other applications result in the same empty box. (I hadn't tried this before, so thank you, this makes me think it might be an Illustrator problem rather than Photoshop, but read on. Something isn't right with my CS 5.5.)
Nothing peculiar about the copied content. I've tried numerous AI files with simple vector images that I've copied as smart objects before.
You can't double click the empty SO object, because it's literally empty. It makes an empty layer in Photoshop. (But, when you make a new file or paste into another application, it does see the correct width/height of the copied object - but then it fails to paste it.)
I've tried placing the AI file in Photoshop and it says "Could not place because of a program error." Is there something wrong with the way my CS 5.5 install is handling vector objects?

Can't paste from Illustrator to pshop as smart object / pixels

Whenever I try to copy paste a vector from Illustrator (CS6 64) to Photoshop (CS6 64) I get the following error:
I'm on Windows 7 and have my Scratch disks set to non-system drives. Have checked permissions and nothing is Read Only.
I can paste as Shape and Shape Layer but not Pixels or Smart Object.

Copy in illustrator, paste in photoshop as smart object problem

Hello. I am posting this here hoping that this message might be seen by someone more experienced who knows the answer. I have already tried to find a solution on my own, but to no avail, and I already lost a whole day just with this problem.
I'm trying to build an example website, in anticipation for a real one that I want to build later on. I've done the wireframing and design (some of it) in illustrator, and now I want to copy to photoshop what I did in illustrator. I need to copy it as a smart object. The problem is that when I copy to photoshop, even though I choose the same dimensions, the file is not the same size. I have inserted some images to try to explain this more clear.

And after that I go to photoshop. I choose to create a new file
Even though when I created a new file in photoshop I selected the same dimensions that were in illustrator (960 px 1810px), the copied object does not match the canvas when I press enter.
I've searched online for people that had the same problem and I found something somewhat similar, but not helpful. The problem for them was that the anti-alias was not selected. However, as can be seen in the images, in my case the anti-alias is selected. The difference I noticed is that for them the W and H are both directly 100% when the object is pasted into photoshop, but for me this never happens, it is always something different. In the images here it is w 99.99% H 99.94%, and I created another layout before this that had even worse dimensions, something like W 97.68% H 98%. I tried to fix this by putting manually 100% for each before I press enter, I even selected the "maintain aspect ration" icon (situated between W and H) but after that the image gets distorted.
I should also mention that I created different other smart objects with these files and they have the same problem - I selected the header for example, made it a smart object, and every time they are introduced to photoshop they are not W 100% H 100% but are 9X % 9X% or something.
I also tried, when creating a new document in photoshop, to put instead of 72pixels/inch - 300pixels/inch and its the same problem..
I also looked at the illustrator file so that there are no strokes on the edges of the document.
So, please, if there is someone who know how to fix this, to paste it so that I will have the same dimensions (W 100% H 100% automatically) so that the documents will match how it is normal, I would really apreciate the help. If there are any other details and setting one might need, I will look for them and mention them after that. Thank you!

Your resizing problem is coming from what is in your clipboard is not 960 x 1810, but larger (960.078 x 1810.048 as seen in your 3rd screenshot), and Photoshop is resizing trying to fit.
To fix this yourself, make a new document, your clipboard size will automaticallly be used if you make a new .psd doucment, then paste, than drag over to your 960 x 1810 .psd document and reposition.

Error pasting paths from Illustrator or Photoshop

Hi, I am expetimenting trouble when copying and pasting any path from illustrator or photoshop to Indesign. It says :''Illustrator import failed. Scrap Containes no visible objects". I have tried all the thing you have suggested previously. This is happening in both indesign CS6 and CC (it does not even paste paths that were created in indesign C6 to indesign CC). Have you found a solution for this already?, Thanks.

Photoshop bug: Smart Objects overwriting other Smart Objects when edited and saved in Illustrator

Experiencing issues when working with a large number (over 200) vector smart objects brought into Photoshop CS4 from Illustrator.
Things seemed to be going along nicely; if I needed to edit a Smart Object, I could double-click it, it would open in Illustrator and then I could edit and save it. Return to Photoshop and the Smart Object is updated. Swell and dandy. The issue started happen when I hit a large quantity of either vector smart objects (remember, over 200) or the many layers and groups within Photoshop (must be over 500). When I would double-click, open, edit, and save the vector Smart Object, the Photoshop Smart Object I was working on would update AND another/several other Smart Objects would update as well. Which, of course, would ruin the artwork, as suddenly I was seeing several instances of the same object. If it hadn't have been for ForeverSave, I many not have recovered the work.
It's rather hard to isolate the issue to see what's causing the problem. Here are some of the possible causes:
Running Snow Leopard on Mac
Many, many Smart Objects in file, perhaps enough to ruin the naming convention and cause bugs when Photoshop referenced the temp file
Many, many Photoshop layers and groups
Illustrator vector files copy+pasted from several different files (affects the naming convention perhaps?)
Some groups/layers in Photoshop are duplicates
To help make it a little clearer, you should know:
Running the most updated software / OS (that is until CS5 comes out)
Smart Objects showed no error until I had actually opened, edited, and saved the referenced temp file (i.e. VectorSmartObject1.ai)
Files saved and worked on from Dropbox (network folder)
Not looking for much of an answer to this question; I just wanted to see if anyone else had come across this bug. Also, Adobe PLEASE look into this as you begin testing for the next update. I have the file(s) if you need to replicate the issue. My best guess is that the naming convention of Vector Smart Objects has an odd character limit so when Vector Smart Object 200.ai is saved, Vector Smart Object 2.ai gets overwritten.

Have you tested this with Photoshop CS5 and Illustrator CS5? (the current versions, that came out last month)
If you duplicated a smart object layer, both layers refer back to the same file content. So when you change the file, both layers would be updated. That is intentional and explained in your manual. If you didn't realize this, that could explain what you are seeing.
If you placed separate files, then they should not be updated at the same time, because they will refer to separate files.
Yes, Smart Objects only update when you save the file.
You would need over 4 billion smart objects in one document to get Photoshop confused about which one refers to which file. And since the layer limit is much less than 4 billion, I doubt that is the cause.
There is no naming convention involved. We don't limit the filenames (except to platform standards and to include a file type extension).

Photoshop CS4 smart object template just overwrote a raw file - HELP

So. I've been working in Photoshop extensively for about 6 years now and I am well aware that nothing we do in Photoshop or Lightroom is supposed to overwrite a raw file. I'm not talking about changing it to something a little lighter or darker, I'm talking about replacing a picture of one baseball player with another one - and the original? Gone.
Here's what happened: I have a poster template that contains several layers, 7 of which are smart objects. I change the pictures in the template by right-clicking the smart object layer and selecting "replace smart object," browsing to the new image, selecting, and here is what SHOULD happen: the target picture opens in Adobe camera raw, I make some small edits, click done or okay or something similar, and that new image has replaced the old one in the template. What DID happen was this: I followed the procedure above and selected my target raw file, the picture that was already in the template (the one I was trying to replace with my target file) opened in Adobe camera raw. I thought - Hey, that's wierd! Closed the ACR dialog and tried again. Same thing happened. I opened lightroom and saw - to my HORROR - that the target file had been changed to the same image that was in the template.
If it clarifies: pictures of player A (who played in 2009) is in all of the smart object layers in my template. I want to make that poster be of player B (who played in 2012) so I begin replacing all the smart objects. When I get to the 3rd image in the poster template, Photoshop overwrites my raw file of player B with the smart object photo of Player A. There were no photos of player A on the network drive that the picture of Player B was on. But there's one now. My raw file shows that it was modified about 10 minutes ago.
We tried undoing in Photoshop. That did nothing. We tried deleting the xmp file. That did nothing. We removed it from the lightroom catalog and reimported it. It is now a picture of Player A from 2009 and my picture of Player B from 2012 is just gone.
Anybody have any idea what this could be and how we could avoid it in the future?

In ACR you can changes the setting then hold down the shift key to change the open image button to an Open Object button. Using that button ACR will open a smart object layer in Photoshop the contents of the embedded object is a copy of the RAW file and the current ACR settings. No File is written Photoshop is not a File Editor its a Document editor that has many data structures for different layer types. When you replace the contents of a smart object you will be put into a "Place" file selection dialog if you choose a raw file it should have the same orientation as the image being replaced because of the associated transform. When you choose a RAW file ACR will open and you can change the conversion settings however there will be no Open Image button instead there will be an OK button. There is also a save image button and you can save a RAW file that is a DNG file not a CR2 file. Like the DNG converter. If you click the OK button the embedded object in the smart object layer will be replaced with a copy of the selected RAW file and the current ACR settings. Again there is no file written Photoshop is not a File editor just the embedded smart object data is replaced in Photoshop smart object layer's data structure.
I do not think the use of smart objects in you process caused what you are experiencing and because it only happens once an a while I feel its more likely caused by some human error made during the processing in those cases. I would look elsewhere for what causing the overlay. In the place file selection dialog it is possible to rename files perhaps even by accident. Programs like LR and Bridge can rename and copy files perhaps overlay other files.

I have tried **** this... recording an action without success... it ends up creating a photoshop file with a background layer, no smart object layer.
Am i missing something obvious? Thanks for your help!

Lightroom - Photoshop and Smart Objects

Hi there,
I've got a very general, work flow related question.
I want to open some of my Lightroom images as smart objects in photoshop to do certain changes.
The files are opened in PS as .tif and I add some layers etc.
If I now save the image, it gets re-imported in LR.
However, I seem to lose all the data like layers etc of photoshop, and I'm not sure how to prevent this.
If I close the image in photoshop, re-open the new LR image again in PS, the layers etc are gone.
What's the correct workflow to do this? (Open images from LR in PS to do adjustments, and save them back to LR)

When you re-open the tif file in Photoshop, choose Edit Original. What you're doing is opening with LR adjustments, causing it to create a new flattened tif.

Photoshop CS6 smart objects on Mac

I recently upgraded to CS6 Master on Mac Mountain, and noticed that smart objects in Photoshop don't open in their respective applications. For example, when I double-click on the smart object, they open in Preview instead of Illustrator. How do I prevent Preview from opening smart objects? How do I make smart objects open in the application in which they were created?

Thank you for the prompt response. I have already checked my file types/extension associations. .EPS and .AI files are default set to open in Illustrator. PDFs are currently set to open in Preview, which I don't mind and I know I can change this to Acrobat if I need to.
Oddly enough, I forced ALL .EPS files to open in Illustrator (I got a prompt that asked if I wanted to change opening all EPS files from Illustrator CS6 to Illustrator CS6), and that seemed to have the desired effect.

Photoshop CS5 Smart objects, Pen tool, Layers.

Hi Ive got few questions about Photoshop CS5.
Every time I open new image in my project photoshop opens as Smart Object and I always have to Rasterize its really annoying. How to change it?
When im using Pen tool and making selection its selects now the part which I selecte but background so I always have to inverse selection to select the part I want to its never happens in Photoshop CS3
When im working on two different projects and I want to copy layer from one project to another how you do it?

1. If your dragging or placing into the image, you can go to Edit>Preferences>General and uncheck Place or Drag Raster Images as Smart Objects.
2. When using the Pen Tool enable Add to Path Area before drawing the path. You can change it after drawing the path by using the Path selection Tool.
3. If your using tabs you can select the Move Tool and drag from the document area on the screen to the other tab and the other document should reveal itself.
Another way is to right click on the layer in the layers panel, choose Duplicate Layer and then in the dialog that follows choose the document under destination.

Photoshop animated smart object to Flash??

Hey All,
I could use a little help here, I am working on this project for a company and they need it to be animated. I tried using Photoshop's animation capabilities, but could only go so far with that. So I'm working on it in flash now. I have managed to import the scene I was working on in Photoshop to flash, but I can't seem to figure how to get the animated smart object (with a screen layer blending mode) to come across in flash. I'm sure there is some super simple way of doing this, but I can't think of one. I've got years of experience with Photoshop, but little time with Flash.
When I import the PSD file to Flash I am selecting the animated smart object layer as "Bitmap image with editable layer styles" selected, and have it also selected to be a movie clip. But it only shows up as a static layer without the screen blending like it was in Photoshop. What am I doing wrong here?

Paul you may want to ask this question over in the AI forum http://forums.adobe.com/community/illustrator its audience may have more experience then this forum's audience with Illustrator and Photoshop combo many here only use Photoshop. I for example have no idea what you mean when you write a spot color.
