Pasword protected bios - unable to remove password

I have bought a used Lenovo ThinkCentre S20 (model: 45G, type 4157)
The BIOS is passwordprotected and I'm unable to remove it. I called the Lenovo support in Finland and was told that replacing the motherboard with a new one is the only solution, can this really be true?
I'm able to enter the BIOS but saving tyhe changes is disabled. Some fields are view-only, some can be edited. For example the password fields and date/time can not be accessed at all. Fields like boot order can be edited, but since the save-function is disabled there'is no point in making changes.
The vendor Cruz Broker (sells a lot of used computers) does not have the BIOS password.
The startup looks like this:

I've tried to reset bios according to this:
http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/detail.page?LegacyDocID=MIGR-72076
1. disconnect the power cable from the back of the system
2. press and hold the power button until you hear the capacitors drain
3. open the access panel and move the CMOS jumper from pins 1+2 to pins 2+3
4. plug in the power cable and boot system
5. when the system beeps, turn the system off
6. move the CMOS jumper from pins 2+3 back to 1+2, then repeat steps 1, 2, 3, and 4
- No change
I removed the motherboard battery for 20hours and put it back.
- No change
I downloaded the BIOS update from lenovo, updated the BIOS, everything seemed to work ok, but still:
- No change
Posting to this forum is kind of the last desperate attempt to solve this but  seems I have to take the computer back to the vendor and get a refund. Unless someone has a solution to provide?

I double checked this with our BIOS team, and clearing CMOS should clear any existing BIOS passwords.  The steps you list seem a little off though, so I would try the following procedure...
Disconnect AC power
Move clear CMOS jumper from pins 1+2 to pins 2+3
Plug in system power and power on until system beeps.  Then power off.
Reset the CMOS jumper to pins 1+2.
Power on system normally.
If this doesn't work, then I suspect you might not be encountering a BIOS password.

    > After removing battery, BIOS ask me for password
I know it sounds stupid now but I never heard about something like this. I use notebook for long time and I have made experience with many different and strange issue but something like this, never.
Problem is that we discuss here in public forum and BIOS password is very sensible area and very important security feature so we cannot write here about some illegal ways how you can delete BIOS password.
If there is no way to start your notebook I recommend you to contact nearest Toshiba service provider and ask for help.
    Sorry. :(

  • Removing Password Protection From External Disk Attached to Time Capsule

I have an TV and when I try to watch a show it always says that "file format is not recognized." I am pretty sure it is because my computer gets disconnected from the external disk that all the media is on. This disk is attached to my time capsule. I wish I could make it so it would automatically reconnect with the disk after being disconnected, but I can't figure out how to make the external disk non password protected without making my network password protected also. Does that make sense? How do I make a disk so it is not password protected if it is on my password protected network? If my computer is on the network then I should be able to access discs without having to put in an additional password, no?

Not with Adobe Reader; you would need Acrobat for that.  And only if you know the PDF's update password.

  • Anyone know why, firefox does not remember password for a site when you remove password from the view password site? I removed a pasword in the view password window and now it not asking me to remember and also it is not remembering the password when I go

Anyone know why, firefox does not remember password for a site when you remove password from the view password site? I removed a password for a site that was not remembering the correct password for the "view password" window and now it does not guess the password and does not remember the password for that site. All other sites are being remembered.
    == This happened ==
    Every time Firefox opened
== After I deleted the password from the view password window.

The saved password feature worked well, but the site I had saved the password for required that I change the password. I have found no way to update the password in Firefox. After I deleted the saved password, Firefox did not ask if I wanted the new password saved. When this happened before, I removed and re-installed Firefox, and then it worked. I hope there is another way to update a password.

  • Is It Possible to Swap a HDD Protected Drive (with a KNOWN password) Between ThinkPads?

    Greetings,
I spilled a sugary drink into my X200, toasting it beyond all repair.  The X200's hard drive has ONLY a bios HDD password that I created and know.  In an attempt to recover my files from the X200's hard drive, I removed the drive and inserted it into my T60.  When I powered on the T60, I recieved the usual HDD password prompt.  However, when I entered the password (all lower-case, no special or non-English characters, and which I know is absolutely correct), I got the incorrect password symbol.  I powered off the machine and repeated this process.  After the second attempt, I saw the password prompt with a crossed out hand.
I later followed a procedure recommended by Lenovo to clear the password (don't think I'm allowed to post a link): enter the password followed by a space.  That didn't work.
I'm wondering whether the X200's HDD pasword protected drive is somehow keyed to that particular machine, and cannot, as I had always assumed, be swapped into another machine and accessed by entering the correct password.
I'm also wondering whether I may have permanantly locked myself out of the drive by making too many "invalid" attempts.
(Edited to add additional info and make the subject more descriptive than it was originally).
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    LongtimeTPOwner, welcome to the forum,
sorry to hear about your situation   Removing the password should definitely be possible in another X200 or even another ThinkPad system of the same era e.g. T400, T500..etc.
One consideration you may like to take a look at is the Passphrase setting in the BIOS Password menu; if it is set differently on the T60 to how this was set on the X200 this could present problems depending on the password used, especially if it has "special characters".
    Edit; typo

  • Remove password from PDF with Reader 9.0?

    Hi,
We would like to know if a user opens a protected PDF (with 128/256 bits encryption) in Acrobat Reader 9.0,
can the user save a copy of the protected PDF and the new PDF is no longer password protected.
That means I would like to check if the reader 9.0 can allow user to remove the password (Of course, permission
should be granted when creating the protected PDF in Acrobat 9.0) from the protected PDF file.
Thanks for your attention in advance,
    Raymond

Reader cannot remove password protection. It only reads files.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, or by corruption of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and  Wi-Fi on certain iMacs. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • Unable to remove 'cifs preposition' from WAE

    Hi.
I created a 'cifs preposition' using the CLI on the WAE instead of doing this on the Central Manager and now I am unable to remove it, I keep getting this error below when I use the 'no' command.
Here is the config and steps I am taking and the error I receive:
    accelerator cifs preposition 19927
       name "remove"
       server "10.10.12.90"
       root "repository/REGIONS/"
credentials username xxxx domain xx password xxxxxxx
       max-cache 2
       no ignore-hidden-dir
       no recursive
       scan-type since last
       schedule
       no enable
       modified 19:09:2012 09:51:58
    exit
When I try to remove using the following: WAE1(config)#no accelerator cifs preposition 19927 I receive the error below.
"config: spawnp: verify binary file: /ruby/bin/echo: No such file or directory
Error spawning user process '/ruby/bin/echo': No such file or directory"
    Thanks
    Zubair

    Peter,
As always thanks for taking time to respond. Indeed your method is correct and worked.
I do agree with your sentiments, this is an "ugly cosmetic problem", Cisco should keep a standard which we all used by using 'no' to negate the command.
    Thanks for your help.
    Regards
    Zubair

  • Migration to Lync 2013 - Unable to remove 2010 Edge Server

    Hi
We did a migration from Lync 2010 to Lync 2013. Everything worked without any problems. But now we are unable to remove the Lync 2010 Edge Pool. Everything has been done according to
https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj205369.aspx “Migration from Lync Server 2010 to Lync Server 2013”.
I am able to remove the 2010 Edge pool, but by trying to publish the topology, I receive the following error: “Error: An error occurred: "System.InvalidOperationException" "Cannot publish topology changes. Call orbit still
exists on one or more deleted application servers."
How can I resolve this error?
    Regards
    Peter

    Hi Peter,
You have to change the Call Park Destination FQDN to the Lync 2013 Pool.

  • Removing password on PDF

Does Mac OS X offer anything for removing the password from a password protected PDF? I purchased an ebook PDF that is password protected. I have the password but don't want to type it in each time I open the PDF.

There might not be a free solution for you at this time, I'm afraid.
What would be nice is for Apple's Preview app to be able to retrieve PDF passwords from your keychain. You would then need to enter the password only once, and from that point on it would just grab it from your keychain. But unfortunately that is not a feature that is currently supported by Preview. You might wish to send Apple a feature request and see if they build that functionality into a future Mac OS X release.
