  • Finding CPU Patch and PSU applied

    hi all,
    How do we find that which and when cpu and psu patches are applied. do we apply this for individual databases or for complete oracle software.
    thank you!

    What version are you on and what version of opatch?
    To find out what PSU's you have applied, you can do this at OS level
    $> opatch lsinv -bugs_fixed | grep -i psu
    From database (depending upon your version), you can do this to find all patches applied to your database:
    col ACTION format a15
    col NAMESPACE format a15
    col version format a10
    col COMMENTS format a42
    col BUNDLE_SERIES format a20
    col action_time format a30
    select * from sys.registry$history;do we apply this for individual databases or for complete oracle software.

    Some patches are for software only while some affect both software and database. This is very generic question/answer

  • Patching, CPU PSU

    hi,
    today I 've red through the Critical Patch Update from April. But my english is not good enough to understand everything. So maybe someone can help me.
    okay... in february I've installed a new linux-server with oracle 10.2.0.1, after that I upgraded to 10.2.0.4 and then applied the PSU from January
    what I had to do now? There is a CPU and a PSU for 10.2.0.4 and a PSU for 10.2.0.4.4
    CPU has only security fixes, right? PSU has bugfixes+securityfixes and is cummulativ (means I can install it on a blank 10.2.0.4). Can I install it too after the January PSU is installed?
    And for future... what do I have to do, if I omitted one PatchDay? Can I apply the next PSU, or is it necessary to first install the omitted CPU/PSU....
    sorry for this noob-questions, but I'm not able to get this information out of the documentations

    Hi,
    Whenever you apply next CPU patch its not necessary to apply the omitted patches...
    Its always there in read me file...
    PSU patches are CPU+bug fixes and sometimes they generate some new bugs..
    So its better to look in metalink about bug fixed and new issues with the PSU patch.
    Similar is case with PSU, its not necessary to apply omitted patch ,... you can directly apply latest PSU fro a db version.... better refer to readme..
    Also refer to forums..
    Difference b/w CPU  and PSU
    PSU vs CPU patching Pros and Cons of each

  • Weblog server licensing and 11.2 grid oms psu ?

    Hello all,
    I had couple of questions( i have already tried searching in the oracle docs and metalink notes, but could not find anything on it). First thing, looks like oracle 11g OEM Grid requires a Weblogic server. Which is fine, But wanted to know do we need to pay extra for this or is it part of oracle 11g OEM Grid diagnostic pack licensing?? If so, i was looking for a official answer (metalink doc or oracle doc)
    Also another thing that I was curious was OMS? Is OMS only at 11.1.0.1.0 version or can this be upgraded to oracle 11gR2? As from below link, i only see 11.1.0.1.0 software.
    http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/oem/grid-control/downloads/index.html
    The thing that confused me was this link below. As in the below doc, it says to apply patch 10270073 to OMS home(psu patch). So i was wondering, after PSU patch is applied. Is the OMS going to be at 11.2.0.2.1 ??

    Enterprise Manager Restricted-use License
    •Enterprise Manager includes a restricted-use license of the Oracle Database for use as the Oracle Management Repository only.
    Additional database options or additional servers for disaster recovery require separate licensing. Customers receive one single-instance database with the Grid Control, or RMAN, repository. To protect the repository with Data Guard, customers need to purchase a license for the standby site. To protect the repository with Oracle Real Application Clusters, customers must license the second node for the database, and both nodes require an Oracle Real Application Clusters license.
    •Use of Oracle WebLogic Server with Oracle Enterprise Manager is restricted to the servlet functionality without clustering for the Oracle Management Server (OMS).

  • 11.2.0.3.0 Required Postinstallation Tasks: Downloading and Installing Patches

    I installed 11.2.0.3.0 on AIX 7.1. The postinstallation tasks begin with downloading and installing patches. I am not sure which patches or PSU to install. Following the directions in the installation guide, I go to My Oracle Support, then to Patches and Updates and specify Oracle Database and IBM AIX 64-bit. For "release" do I select 11.2.0.3.0, or do I select the seven releases from 11.2.0.3.0 - 11.2.0.3.6? If I select all seven the search returns 1293 patches. The instructions are obviously not telling me to download and apply all 1293 patches. I next searched for the most recent PSU and see that PSU 11.2.0.3.6 was published on April 17, 2013. What is the right thing to apply? Should I download only PSU 11.2.0.3.6 and apply that, or should I do something else not described here?
    Thanks,
    Bill

    You should apply the latest 11.2.0.3 PSU (currently 11.2.0.3.6) - you do not have to apply all of the one-off patches

  • Applying PSU 2 to OMS causes service to be unavailable.

    Repository Database Oracle 11.2.0.3
    OMS 12.1.0.2.0
    Agent(s) 12.1.0.2.0
    Grid Infrastructure 11.2.0.3
    Our goal is to patch Enterprise Manager 12C R2 with the latest PSUs and patches so that we can being using it in ernest, tackling one problem at a time as needed with Oracle support.
    This post address patches and PSU 2 for the OMS.  I have opened a ticket with Oracle support. after 6 days have not had the help that I need.
    Our base version for OMS we 12.1.0.2.0.  These were the patches that we found needed to bring it up-to-date:
    16236221
    15920831
    14822626
    Patch 16236221 is PSU 2.  We applied this patch, and then the next two listed above, and then made plans to move on to the Grid Infrastructure and Database.  We admit to being somewhat confused by the new patching mechanisms as we jumped right from OEM 10.2 to EM12CR2.  It's a different world.
    With that aside:
    PSU 2 was applied on 5/23/2013.  A few days later we noticed the Oracle Load Map no longer was available because Sessions: CPU, Session: I/O, Sessions: Other and Instance CPU(%) from the database search list were not populated.  A ticket with Oracle support told us this is working as designed because this feature is not meant for RAC databases (or which most of ours are.)  Wonder why it worked before?  If this is really the case, it makes the Oracle Load Map useless for us.  Am I off base here?
    As we waited for a response from support, we continued using EM.  I came in on Monday morning and could not log in, getting the error:  "Authentication failed. If problem persists, contact your system administrator."
    Yikes.  SYSMAN, SYS ... nobody could log in.
    The emoms.trc file under user_projects/domains/GCDomain/servers/EMGC_OMS1/sysman/log was written to frantically from every node with an agent with:
    [2013-06-10T15:15:18.630-04:00] [OJDL] [NOTIFICATION:16] [ODL-52001] [oracle.core.ojdl.FileLogWriter] [org: Oracle] [host: bkvlnxgrid02.ad.swfwmd.net] [nwaddr: 10.4.4.87] [tid: GCLoader[severity].- https://tpaoltp01da.ad.swfwmd.net:3872/emd/main/] [userId: oracle] deleting log file: emoms-15058.log, size: 5241836 bytes

    ORA-06550: line 1, column 7:
    PL/SQL: Statement ignored
    As soon as this file reached about 5mg, it rolled off and created another one.  We were getting a gazillion on them.
    Not getting an answer from support, we needed to revert back to before the patch and access.  We removed PSU 2 from the OMS and then saw that the MGMT_TABLESPACE was full and that these objects written to quickly:
    SYSMAN EM_JOB_METRICS_PK INDEX
    SYSMAN EM_JOB_METRICS TABLE
    SYSMAN EM_VIOLATIONS TABLE
    We doubled the space in MGMT_TABLESPACE and voila!  We could log in to em again.
    Things are not great, we are getting a new set of weird errors, but that's another story.
    Has anyone had similar experiences?  I'm focusing on getting OMS PSU 2 applied, since it is Oracle recommendation to remain current with PSUs.
    Merely applying a PSU patch has consumed 6 days of our productivity.
    Are we doing something wrong?
    Has anyone else had problems after applying PSU 2 to the OMS?
    Any words of wisdom?
    Sherrie

    Please note that my post stated:  "I have opened a ticket with Oracle support. after 6 days have not had the help that I need."
    I also agree that applying the latest PSU is a Best Practice, which Oracle defines as "a cumulative collection of high impact, low risk, and proven fixes for a specific product or component".
    With that statement I feel there should not be the drastic issues that we have seen.  Our policy is to always apply PSUs, no matter what the product or component, without issue.
    Except for now.  We did our research, and only open an Oracle ticket when we need expert help.  That has not been forthcoming from them, but we are still working the ticket.
    Hence, I opened this forum because many times I have found help here, where others have faced the same issue and now have an insight.  When having a serious problem I like to use all of my resources, this forum being one of those.
    To restate the question:
    (1)     97% of our databases reside on RAC.  From the Search List for Databases, we do not see the columns Sessions:CPU, Sessions: I/O, Sessions: Other, Instance CPU%, and are told this is working as designed because you must monitor the instance, not the database, with RAC.
         (a) After applying PSU2 the Oracle Load Map no longer showed any databases.
    All of this in (1) is making the tool less useful for monitoring at the database level, which we do most of the time.
    (2) Within a few days of applying PSU2, we couldn't log into EM and got the error "Authentication failed. If problem persists, contact your system administrator."
        (b) searching through the emoms.trc files we found the errors listed above posting frantically.
    After rolling back PSU we are back in business.
    However, there is still the need to remain current with the components of EM.
    I am looking for suggestion, insights, experience.  While I appreciate Akanksha answering so quickly, a recommendation to open an SR is not what I need.

  • Latest Security Patch for Oracle DB 10.2.0.4 on 11.5.10.2 environment

    We have SUNOS 5.10 with database 10.2.0.4 on 11.5.10.2 environment. The requirement is to patch latest security patch.
    last patch was done 17-FEB-2009 ( retrived from registry$history). So, i would like to apply the latest security patch.
    Please somebody let me know which one is the latest patch to be applied for this environment.
    Thanks
    Dheeru

    Hi Hussein,
    The customer can install CPU Patch or PSU Patch on top of 10.2.0.4. I agree with you but I think you are misunderstanding for what I am trying to say. Why not go for the latest Patch Set 4 (10.2.0.5) and then apply CPU Patch 9952270 or PSU Patch 9952230 on top of it (recommended). Every quarter, Oracle provides Critical Patch Updates (CPU) to address security vulnerabilities, and Patch Set Updates (PSU) to address proactive, critical fixes and security vulnerabilities. When deciding for CPU or PSU, please consider the following guidelines:
    Critical Patch Updates and Patch Set Updates
    The Patch Set Updates and Critical Patch Updates that are released each quarter contain the same security fixes. However, they use different patching mechanisms, and Patch Set Updates include both security and recommended bug fixes. Consider the following guidelines when you are deciding to apply Patch Set Updates instead of Critical Patch Updates.
    1) Critical Patch Updates are applied only on the base release version, for example 10.2.0.4.0.
    2) Patch Set Updates can be applied on the base release version or on any earlier Patch Set Update. For example, 11.1.0.7.2 can be applied on 11.1.0.7.1 and 11.1.0.7.0.
    3) Once a Patch Set Update has been applied, the recommended way to get future security content is to apply subsequent Patch Set Updates. Reverting from an applied
    Patch Set Update back to the Critical Patch Update, while technically possible, requires significant time and effort, and is not advised.

  • How can i identify Patch no ? How it is differ from patchsets no ?

    Hello to all ;
    I read official document it says
    All patch and patch set releases carry version numbers. - patch set might be 10.2.0.2 , .... , 10.2.4.0 , 10.2.5.0
    How can i identify patch number ? My DB version is 10.2.0 is , what's my patch release no ?
    Thanks in advance ..

    Ok. Almost i got well information about patches from HERE ..
    Collected information's from here :0 , If my understanding is wrong , please  correct it
    patches Patches are software programs for individual BUG FIXES. Oracle issues product fixes software, usually it is called as patches.
    patche SetsA group of patches form a patch set. Patch sets are usually applied to upgrade oracle version. EX ( 10.2.0.1 to 10.2.0.4 )
    If my DB needs patch ,I want to upgrade DB , version to Version (10.2.0.4 to 10.2.0.4)
    If my oracle S/w needs patch ,A small collection of files are replaced to fix certain bugs , when aaplying patch into my oracle S/w
    When applying patch/patch sets , what affected my database directly ?It depends upon patch ..
    My Special thanks :0
    Ok Osama , It's my final question :
    I read , If i applied PSU patch , i can't apply CPU patch ( until dB upgade to new version)- What's the specific reason here ?
    If someone applied a patch on my DB , how can identify what type of patch applied on my DB ? (if it is PSU or CPU)- I mean how can i identify , whether the patch was PSU or CPU ?
    How can i differentiate both patches when seeing ?
    Thanks Osama ..

  • Apply patch from 10.2.0.1 to 10.2.0.5

    Hi Experts,
    i want upgrade my oracle 10.2.0.1 to 10.2.0.5.
    But on office side not able access oracle GUI. work only on Putty. please tell me how to upgrade my oracle using commands only.
    Can we upgrade it, if yes please me how to do and which patch required for it.
    >
    using Oracle version = 10.2.0.1

    >
    Reg,
    Harshit

    1) what is diff between Opatch and interim patch.Opatch is just the tool for applying interim/one-off patches and PSU/CPU-s
    2) I have Oracle database 10g release 10.2.0.1, and I want to upgrade it to release 10.2.0.5.
    Then, in this case should I use OPatch? or should I run the OUI (./ runInstaller downloaded path)? no need for OPatch, you use OUI
    (you cant even use OPatch for this kind of upgrade)
    3) if i want apply patch using "-silent" installation, can you please step by step installation.
    when i go for "-silent", every time i am facing issue in very basic steps../runInstaller -silent -responseFile myResponseFile.rsp
    Fill the sample response file provided with the install media by appropriate values for your enviroment.
    4) Also, how many types of patches are there like bug fixes, enhancements, upgrades, and how they are applied? do they affect only the software? or, do they also affect the database too. Base release: 11.2.0.1
    Patch set: 11.2.0.3
    these are installed with OUI, the rest with opatch
    also, since 11.2, Patch sets can be installed individually without the base release
    Patch set update, for example: 11.2.0.3.3 - general fixes
    Critical patch update: released in every 4 months (JAN-APR-JUL-OCT), contains security patches
    The last two tend to come together in the same pack since a while.
    One-off patch: patch for one specific bug
    Interim patch: patch for specific bug for a specific customer (received through support service request)
    of course they affect both software and database (majority of them)
    to mention one exception, there is a one-off patch for 10.2 databases that issues the SSL certification problem for Enterprise Manager database console - actually this patch just updates some .jar files in $ORACLE_HOME and has no effect on the database

  • CPU patch for 10.2.0.4.0

    I am using oracle 10gr2.4.0,
    platform: hp-ux itanium 11.31
    i would like to apply CPU patch or PSU.
    cpu patch :8836308
    PSU patch 8833280
    will you please clarify...

    A PSU (or PatchSet Update) include the CPUs (or Critical Patch Update) and several individual patches (one off-patched) which are not included into a single CPU.
    Depending of your shop policies, PSU could be more appropriate.
    Nicolas.

  • This is regarding psu/cpu on 11.2.0.2

    Hi,
    We installed and created the 11.2.0.2 db on 13-APR-11
    ./opatch lsinventory -all shows the below contents
    List of Oracle Homes:
    Name Location
    OraDb11g_home2 /orahome/oracle/product/11.2.0.2/db_1
    Installed Top-level Products (1):
    Oracle Database 11g 11.2.0.2.0
    There are 1 products installed in this Oracle Home.
    There are no Interim patches installed in this Oracle Home.
    We haven't applied any kind patch till now so instead of applying and patchset can we upgrade to 11.2.0.3 which is latest one , is it covers all the oracle released patch set (psu/cpu) till now on 11g ?
    appreciated for the inputs
    Thanks

    HI,
    As the database created on 13-APR-11 and we haven't applied any patches (CPU/PSU) after that
    suppose if application won't support 11.2.0.3 then i need to apply patches on 11.2.0.2
    These are the below patch no released for 11.2.0.2
    Patchset/PSU number
    11.2.0.2.6 -> 13696224
    11.2.0.2.5 -> 13343424
    11.2.0.2.4 -> 12827726
    11.2.0.2.3 -> 12419331
    11.2.0.2.2 -> 11724916
    11.2.0.2.1 -> 10248523
    is i need to apply all ptaches to get updated with oracle OR by applying 11.2.0.2.6 -> 13696224 only enough to sync with oracle ? so no need to apply 13343424,12827726,12419331,11724916,10248523
    appreciated for the inputs

  • Raid array being seen as 2 individual drives

    Hi. Here is the issue as posted in other places. Still searching for the answer to this one.
    Specs:
    K7n2 delta2 platinum with b50 bios
    2x1gb crucial pc3200 2.5cas ram
    AMD Barton 2500
    2 x 160gb 7200rpm 8mb cache SATA Samsung Hdd's
    Thermaltake 430w psu
    Gainward fx5700 ultra graphics
    OS's: original xp corp, slipstreamed xp corp sp2
    raid drivers: nvraid.sys v4.27, 5.10, 5.11 (also the needed nvatabus.sys with those)
    I am NOT overclocked.
    fsb 166
    1:1 ram/cpu
    no spread spectrum or other garbage
    ddr400 patch disabled
    PSU gives presumably stable reading (according to what I see), with amperage ratings above the required.
    checked and rechecked cables for bad ones
    ran mulitple scans on drives, all come up drives OK
    I HAVE installed into Raid 0 already, this is not an issue of hardware failure as far as I am concerned.
    So here is the scenario
    I have properly set up the array, using correct bios settings and the raid setup utility, for a raid 0 array of those 2 hdd's listed. When booting into xp, either version, I have used all 3 of the driver sets listed. I have been reinstalling to do some performance tests on different configurations.
    Anyway, for the last few nights I have been trying to get the windows setup to see the raid 0 array as one 300gb drive. It does not, no matter what I try. It sees them as 2 drives, each being 160gb (or thereabouts). These drives are matched, same firmware, same lot, so that should not be an issue.
    I have used numberous tools to delete the mbr on the drives, both in an array and as single drives. I have done the same as well as tried an install and formatted each drive individually, still the same effect when the raid array is recreated.
    Basically, I can find no good reason why the array is seen as individuals and not as an array. It is interesting to note, that even though xp setup sees the the array as 2 drives, I can complete the text based portion of setup. However, rebooting to start the GUI portion of setup, it will not boot. Obviously becuase the bios has the controller as the nvraid controller and it is supposed to be a raid 0 array, so I expected that.
    Short of rewriting the mbr, either by deleting it or by changing each drive by formatting/partitioning/installing an OS on them, I cannot think of how to fix this. I know the drives and xp cd's work because I have already installed with them.
    I understand what to do in the bios portion, and in the raid setup utility portion. I know that I can boot into windows as a single drive and use the nvraid tool to set it up, but that is not the way it should be, and that is not the way I am going to learn WHY this is happening.
    Roger that. First set in bios enable raid (in this bios I have to enable IDE array, then choose which controller to actually enable raid on, which happens to have been SATA 1 & 2).
    Second, upon reboot, I use the F10 key to enter raid utility. Then, set to striping, set stripe size (which was one of the things I am testing), and add the drives to the array. Next step is to create it. It asks to clear disc data, and it is done.
    Have deleted that array as well as just cleared it. Have deleted it and reboot and rebuild it. Have deleted it, reboot, change bios back to non-raid, reboot. Reboot. Change bios back to raid enabled. Reboot. Rebuild array in raid utility, reboot. Run setup, only see 2 hdd's, not one array.
    Umm, yep, that is about it.
    More to the story now.
    From some other posts I tried this.
    1. destroy array. reboot. disable raid in bios. reboot. verify sata's visible as singles in bios.
    2. power down. pull plugs on sata's. reboot. no drives visible.
    3. pull power. jumper clear cmos. wait 60 seconds. re-pin jumper. power up.
    4. verify no drives. verify default bios settings. all is good
    5. plug drives in. reboot. seen as singles. erase mbr on both drives. reboot
    6. enable raid in bios, and choose sata 1 & 2 as "enabled". reboot.
    7. use F10 key to setup raid. Here is the interesting part. Even though I deleted the array prior to all of this, and removed the drives to force an ESCD update, and cleard the cmos with the board jumper, and then before raid was enabled, cleared the mbr on the drives, when I started the raid utility, the array was already set up. That is the problem, whatever that is. I have read snippets where it is claimed that this chip or bios or whatever stores some kind of a table on this stuff, but this is a bit out of hand.
    That combination, IMO, should have cleared anything out. But, the saga continues.
    Thanks for you help BWM
    [Edit] BTW, I have finally found a utility that will see a raid array and allow me to clear the arrays mbr. It is called SuperFdisk and is at ptdd.com. So far the only one that see's the 2 drives as 1.
    Yeppers.
    Started with v5.10 which came on a floppy with the mobo. Told setup to use both, nvatabus.sys and nvraid.sys. Even switched which one of the 2 I picked first, just to see.
    Same thing with v4.27 and v5.11. Also tried it with just the nvraid.sys and just the nvatabus.sys (which obviously does squat for raid, lol)
    Trying some new things now. Post in a little bit.
    I am officially at 'Wit's End'.
    Here is what I have tried now.
    1.pull drive cables. pull power. jumper clear cmos. wait. power up. no drives
    2.plug sata 1 in. boot. drive detected.
    3.boot to command.com, run MHDD, which is a nice russian utility similar to Spinrite. Used this to clear the mbr at hardware level, and do a complete erase.
    4. reboot to command.com. run superfdisk. erase mbr.
    5. pull plug on sata 1, and plug in sata 2 with sata 1 cable. repeat the erasure steps listed above.
    6. pull plug on sata 2, no sata plugged in. reboot
    7. change bios to raid enable on sata 1 & 2. power down
    8. plug in sata 1 & 2. power up.
    9. inspect raid utility. no listing of any arrays. reboot
    10. in raid utility, build array. did NOT clear discs. reboot
    11. attempt install. single drives found again (used both drivers).reboot
    12. in raid utility, optioned to CLEAR discs (funny, rebuild option is never valid).reboot
    13. attempt install, both drivers, still seen as 2 individuals.
    Things to note. When creating an array when presumably there are none, it assigns the raid array an ID of 2. Upon reboot, the ID is now 1. Don't know what difference that makes.
    Also, tried the install listed above with APIC functionality both off and on. Also, when on, set MPS to both 1.1 and 1.4. In addition to this, each variant I tried manual HAL layers of, in this order, ACPI (the one that actually spells ACPI out), ACPI Uniprocessor, MPS Uniprocessor, and let it choose it for me.
    So, here I sit in a barca-lounger at 'Wit's End', with a warm cup of java and a dinner mint.

    Here is the final product on the floppy disk that I used to  successfully install a stable raid 0 on the MSI K7N2 Delta 2 Ultra 400  Platinum ms-6570e motherboard.
    On root of floppy, from driverset 6.70. (after much testing, I used  driver pack 5.10 for my nic and smbus. I used the realtek sound  drivers off the cd for audio. I have used every driver pack I could  find, and while some did offer better I/O or read/write latency, this  set in general provided the most stable environment. The only drivers  I used were these floppy drivers for SATA, the nic and smbus just  mentioned, the sound just mentioned, and updating the nvide drivers to  mside drivers)
    <from sataraid directory>
    disk1
    idecoi.dll
    nvatabus.sys
    nvraid.cat
    nvraid.inf
    nvraid.sys
    nvraidco.dll
    <from legacy directory>
    nvata.cat
    nvatabus.inf
    I used the txtsetup.oem from the sataraid directory, but edited this:
    [Files.scsi.RAIDCLASS]
    driver  = d1,nvraid.sys,RAIDCLASS
    inf     = d1,nvraid.inf
    dll     = d1,nvraidco.dll
    catalog = d1,nvraid.cat
    [Files.scsi.BUSDRV]
    driver = d1,nvatabus.sys,BUSDRV
    inf    = d1, nvraid.inf
    dll    = d1,idecoi.dll
    catalog = d1, nvraid.cat
    To this:
    [Files.scsi.RAIDCLASS]
    driver  = d1,nvraid.sys,RAIDCLASS
    inf     = d1,nvraid.inf
    dll     = d1,nvraidco.dll
    catalog = d1,nvata.cat
    [Files.scsi.BUSDRV]
    driver = d1,nvatabus.sys,BUSDRV
    inf    = d1, nvatabus.inf
    dll    = d1,idecoi.dll
    catalog = d1, nvata.cat
    Now, it is important to note that I installed or attempted to install  at least 50 times. Bare minimum. I noticed when I use this custom  driver disc that in the GUI portion of setup, XP asks me for files  from the disc. I tried lot's of different things to alleviate this,  and denied some of them.
    One thing that really bugged me was that the bios would see my #2  optical, slave on secondary IDE channel. A dvd/rw drive. And I could  even start the setup from it. But, once I got about 3/4 through copy  file stage on text setup portion, I would hang. Becuase the drive was  no longer accessible. Booting from the master would get me to the  desktop, but the slave optical was nowhere to be found. Updating the  ATA/IDE controller to the ms ide drivers would get it visible, but I  kept having issues with stability after I did that.
    The most stable method I found was to use my above listing of driver  files for the floppy, and when in GUI mode setup asks about NVCOI.DLL,  I skipped it, ignored it, and did not let setup install it. That  actually got me to the desktop, with access to the slave optical as a  "removable drive". It even knew what the hardware was. It just could  not access it. On a reboot however, back to not seeing it. This method  however did allow me to update the nvide driver with the mside driver  with no stability issues. So, for me it was a raving success.

    Early on one problem I noticed was that in text setup mode of xp  installation, there were long pauses that I have never seen before. I  noticed that with both ide and sata installs. Also I noticed that when  booting there was a really long pause when the xp logo is first seen  in a sort of dim state till when it became bright and vivid.
    Come to find out that this is a more or less typical scenario. Most  instances that I read about were all pointing to the nvide driver. So,  I found if I just updated the PATA controller to the standard ms ide  driver, that went away and the whole system ran better.
    It took awhile to figure out that if you install a driver with the  nForce2 chip, you had to uninstall it or you will have issues. Herein  was the main problem I encountered with the SATA RAID installs. The  nvatabus.sys driver was required for an SATA RAID install. Omitting  the ata driver was impossible. And for awhile I had no success  updating the ms ide driver once I was to the desktop without major  instability. Here are some links regarding the drivers for this  chipset:

    In my browsing I came across some pretty interesting articles  regarding ACPI. One thing I started playing with was the different HAL  layers that xp installs on it's own, vs. me picking one manually (F5  key). I must have started the setup at least 50 times to figure out  this: that this particular board does not give me the bios settings to  install xp with anything but the ACPI Uniprocessor Hal. For instance,  the MPS Uniprocessor HAL is much more responsive, but it lacks the  IRQ's needed for setup to see the raid array. I booted to each one,  some locking the system up, some booting OK. The one I found the best  performance with early on was the one that spells out ACPI, not just  initialized. (sorry, I don't want to look it up).
    I seemed to be getting closer, but I could not find the needed bios  settings to properly manage my ACPI, and since I was trying for RAID,  I could not use the one that did work. Here is a link for that kind of  stuff.
    http://www.fceduc.umu.se/~jesruv98/info/acpi/acpi.html
    Another thing that I did not like was being forced to use the dynamic  overclocking feature of this board. I have a 333mhz barton core, and I  have ddr400 ram. In optimized (fool proof) mode in bios, I was running  asynchronous. I did not want that. So I set it down to run at 166mhz,  with very slow and conservative settings on everything. Unfortunately,  if I did this "manual" method, I was forced to use the dynamic  overclocking. I thought I had that figured out. So I set everything to  "optimized". But, as it turns out, the system had terrible stability  without the dynamic overclocking set to at least Private. What this  meant is that I could not rule out that my stability issues  (corruptions and hangs and bsod) were from being overclocked even a  tiny bit or not. And as if that were not enough, this bios has a  special set of settings you must unlock to see. And one of those is  paramount in achieving a stable system. It is called the DDR400 patch,  and it is enabled by default. So, by pressing SHIFT+f2 AND CTRL+F3,  these settings are now available. Like I said, I had to disable that  DDR400 patch setting.
    I also found out from the first day that my board shipped with the  latest bios. I flashed the 2 prior versions with no success in more  stability. After about 6 weeks of getting whipped on by this board, I  found mention of some modded bios's for this board. I have used modded  bios's in the past, some worked wonders, others required some serious  effort to recover from. What I found out about this board is that  there are 2 players who make the modded bios's. Here is the first  index I found from a german website. This one actually is for the  older B4 version only for the Platinum.

    And here is an english forum for pretty much the same thing
    http://www.nforcershq.com/forum/bios-mods-for-k7n-and-k8-boards-vt55014.html
    These links have a bit more information, and I decided to go with  these. I tried versions b61,b62 and b71. I found b71 to work the best  for me. Mind you I am not into overclocking or what-have-you. Just a  rig that performs as well as it was advertised to do. Try these out  for the bios information:
    http://forums.pcper.com/showthread.php?t=385480
    https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=84715.0B62
    Here is a page that had a bunch of misc stuff I found interesting:
    http://66.102.7.104/search?q=cache:QkvLeKcbwjQJ:www.amdzone.com/modules.php%3Fop%3Dmodload%26name%3DPNphpBB2%26file%3Dviewtopic%26p%3D75383+nforce2+ultra+nvraid+driver+freeze&hl=en&client=opera
    In the end, I have, I think, conquered this board. My findings can be  summed up as follows, all in my opion only I guess.
    1. There are some ACPI/APIC issues with this board or this chipset. I  believe it also included drivers and some can be attributed to XP.
    2. There are some major bios issues with this board.
    3. There are some major driver issues concerning SATA/RAID. I am not  sure who get's the boob prize, nVidia or MSI.
    The only way I have found to get RAID 0 installed and stable is to  modify my bios (which is a modded beta version), modify my driver disk  for SATA/RAID, modify my install sequence for those drivers, modify my  drivers within windows after setup, use different drivers from  different driver packs for different pieces of hardware, and modify my  HAL layer after everything else is done, to achieve peak performance.
    If I had not spent soooo much time trying to get a stable install, I  would have built up an Unattended CD, which has some possibilities for  forcing non WHQL drivers. But, hey man, I am totally burn out on this  board. And all it was for is a spare LAN box for when I go to a  lanparty. Sheesh. Murphy's law.
    Oh, and I also found out, with my own eyes, that the Soyo KT600  Dragon+ that I dumped for this wonderful board, is way faster. Faster  read/writes, faster throughput on the nic, faster booting, much faster  installs of xp. As a matter of fact, I could get my KT600 to get a  consistent thruput on the network to my older KT266a board at 99%.  That is pretty fast. 2 of these Platinum boards, on a sweet switch  that is tweaked, will only go up to 91%, no matter how much I tweak  them. The gigabit connects via a crossover cable at about 38% of full  bore. This is tweaked stuff, but still. I listened to the hype. Dual  channel memory, giglan, etc etc.
    I hope this may help anyone else out there who is still fighting with  these issues.
    Out.
