Patch fundamantal questions

Yesterday I have installed a latest CPU completely different way. During my six month career in oracle I always install a patch by simply double click on setup and afterward run upgrade assistant which update oracle version. But yesterday I have install patch completely different way. I have download patch the first thing to note there is no OUI setup. Patch readme file used Opatch utility to install patch. I have stated working according to readme file instruction but soon I came to know that Opatch utility not install on my machine than I installed Opatch and than patch but all these working raised my question in my mind plz help me to clarify the concept
What are the different type of patch exist
What is the difference b/w patch that change version or also have OUI setup and patch which install through Opatch utility.
Can we use GUL interface instead of Opatch utility
Why did not run upgrade assistant after Installtion of patch
Why this CPU did not change version of database
How we check either patch install successfully or not (Most important question)

Basically it boils down to the problem you still want everything delivered on a golden plate on your doorstep and still can't be bothered to read readily available documentation and go on abusing this Forum to abstract documentatiion you refuse to read.

  • OWB 10.2.0.2 patch - two questions

Hi, two quick questions that I haven't been able to get answers to:
    1. Does anyone know how far away the Solaris version of this patch is?
    2. I'm trying to figure out if I can use the 10.2.0.2 new client against a 10.2.0.1 repository. Don't see anything in the installation notes - does anyone know if this is possible?
    Thanks!
    Scott

    Hello :)
Don't know the answer tot he first one.
As for the secong one - this is the extract from the documentation available as 'read me' for the patch:
To upgrade from a 9.2.x or 10.1.0.x version, first download and install Warehouse builder 10.2.0.1 into a new ORACLE_HOME.
Apply the 10.2.0.2 patch over the 10.2.0.1 ORACLE_HOME as described in the next section.
After applying the 10.2.0.2 patch, migrate the design data, using MDL export, and migrate the runtime data. For instructions on migrating data, refer to an installation guide for Oracle Warehouse Builder 10g Release 2. You can follow the instructions either in the original Warehouse Builder 10.2 guide, which is part number B28224-02. Or you can follow the Warehouse Builder 10.2.0.2 guide, which is part number B28224-03.
    Upgrading from Warehouse Builder 10.2.0.1
sorry i couldn't paste the entire document but if you go to the page where the patch is and then go to READ ME (which also lists what was fixed in this patch):
Looks like you need to upgrade to R2 first.
    Hope this helps

  • 10.2.0.4 Patching failure question.

    OS :- AIX 5L
    DB :- 10.2.0.2
I was doing Patching from 10.2.0.2 to 10.2.0.4.
Before doing any patching i always take tar backup of binaries.
While doing Patching at some 30% i got error as below
/oracle/SID/102_64/rdbms/demo/aqxml.sbs (invalid file system control data detected)
I tried searching all over but couldnt find much.
After this thinking that its part of demo folder i ignored it and went ahead but
it started giving same error to all files which it was trying to copy. and OUI gave only option to stop installation.
cause was that there was OS corruption introduced on /oracle/SID Filesystem.
SA tried to unmount the filesystem which was not happening because there was corruption and it was not allowing to write anything on /oracle/SID. We rebooted the system. ran fsck and mounted back the /oracle/SID.
After this i moved the original binaries folder and untar the binaries backup in /oracle/SID.
DB came up properly using untarred binaries no issues.
But question is now i see there is some 300mb difference between size of moved old binaries folder and new untarred folder.
Old one which was 30% patched is 300mb more than untarred folder.
If i had not taken tar backup of binaries would i be still able to use same old binaries??
I mean is OUI that much intelligent to not to touch original binaries until copying is done or
Does it restores old binaries if new Patching fails?
Hope i have put it in proper words!!!!!!

    Hi,
    Welcome 2 Oracle Forums :)
I mean is OUI that much intelligent to not to touch original binaries until copying is done or Does it restores old binaries if new Patching fails?
No i don't think so. It will copy all the files in the $ORACLE_HOME, better check the Installation logfile of patchset.
It is highly recommended to take full backup of Database and $ORACLE_HOME before performing any upgrade.

  • Ultrabeat Patches/Presets Question

I'm sure this will have been asked & probably answered before but i have done a search & found nothing on it.
    So I'll apologize now.
Ok Ultrabeat patches or Ultrabeat presets.
I know that Logic 8 already has an extensive library of presets for Ultrabeat but i have pretty much been through them & used them to death.
My question is this , Is there any way i could get hold of more Ultrabeat presets or even more patches for the step sequencer.
    Thank You

    Hi Sampeconstruct
Ive started down the programming them myself route to be honest i was being lazy
Not much response so i assumed the answer to my question was no
It was more the patterns to use in the sequencer i was after really
Ive been getting some interesting grooves using the transform window in the piano roll aswell after creating a sequence in UB

  • Patch-upgrade questions

I have been asked to get our phone servers all up to date with the latest OS patches (service releases) and have a question that i cannot seem to find an answer to. Our phone system consists of 4 servers (Cisco 78XX MCS) 2 of which are our Call Manager publisher and subscriber and the other 2 are our CRS servers (IPCC Express). The difference is that 2 of them are 7825's and 2 of them are 7845's but they are both running the same OS (OS image, OS Service release, OS upgrade). I was looking at the available service releases on Cisco's site 'http://www.cisco.com/cgi-bin/tablebuild.pl/callmgr-41' but it looks like those are specific to CCM so I just need to know if I can download those patches and apply them to both the CCM and CRS servers or is here another link that shows the downloads for the CRS servers operating system? I would think that it would be the same but I just wanted to check with the folks around here as I don't think that would merit a TAC case. If anybody knows if I can use the same patches and what not on both the CCM and CRS servers I wouls appreciate it.

    Hi Matt,
Great question! The page you were looking at is for SR's and patches for the Callmanager 4.1 Train specifically and would not be loaded on the IPCC servers.
    For OS Versions, they generally are the same on both. Here is a clip from the ReadMe for 2000.4.5a. These are always highly recommended reading to verify the required pre-load etc;

  • Bursting patch - ebs - questions

    Hello all,
We will be implementing the bursting patch - 5968876 - this week on our environment.
    xmlp - 5.6.3
    ebs 11.5.10 cu2
I have a few questions that hopefully someone could answer.
    1) Is there any good documentation on this process , with the new patch in place,
other than the readme in the patch files ?
    2) Now that we upload a control file, will that automatically set off the bursting process,
or do we have to make a specific call for the XDOBURSTREP program to run ?
    3) is CUPS a mandatory install on our server ( HP-UX 11.11) for this process ?
    4) I have seen that people mention they call bursting process from an after report trigger
in a report. What if we are not using a report ? how would / could this call be made
    then?
    thanks much in advance
    cheers...
    James

I didn't get a response but I have seen a bursting control file example that uses cc so am guessing that bcc can be used.
As for the exception, I implemented a summary report that is burst to file. This always gets generated so I don't get the exception. I believe that Is what the other thread, I was looking for, did but was not able to confirm that.
    Cheers,
    Dave

  • CPU Patch related question

    Hi all,
We are using Oracle 9.2.0.6 on RHEL4 64 bit
What is the use of CPU patch.Ealier we are using Sun Solaris server but after migrating to rhel, we are getting problem in one of the applicaion module.
but i don't know whether we are haing any cpu patch applied on the sun server.
and which patch should i applied for oracle 9.2.0.6 and how to apply it.
Does the steps to apply the CPU patch is same as it is applying the patchset of 9.2.0.6.
    Please suggest me.

As CPU's are security patches (which you can get from Metalink), did you even consider visiting Metalink?
    You would have found
    https://metalink2.oracle.com/metalink/plsql/f?p=130:10:5691407109246679955::::ALLTEXT,ANYTEXT,EXCTEXT,NONTEXT,KNOWLEDGE,PRODUCT_ID,PLATFORM_ID,SS,ST,NUMHITS,FILTCRIT,FILTCRITVAL:CPU,,,,TRUE,,,0,DR,100,2,Support.CriticalPatchUpdates
Metalink answers all questions on CPU.
You should use available resources, as per the Forums Etiquette post, PRIOR to asking them here, forcing volunteers to summarize or abstract information which IS already on your doorstep.
And you would have noticed you need 9.2.0.8 to apply CPU's.
I also suggest you only ask questions after you have done some research. You shouldn't ask questions like this, and they don't deserve an answer. You can find the answer yourself with little effort.
You seem to think the only thing you need to know to work as a DBA is how to use this forum to ask all of your doc questions. You won't get far this way.

  • Many Patch/Upgrade Questions/Processes for SAP Systems

Hello, I am trying to wrap my head around the patching/update process in SAP.  I am familiar with how to use SPAM and SAINT, but my questions are more about the process as a whole.  Here are some of my concerns:
    - Do you update the OS or SAP first?
    - Do you just apply only OS Service Packs or do you do all security patches as well?
    - Should kernel updates be done before or after database patches?
    - How do I update the kernel on a cluster?
    - Should you go to the latest database patches available or go to a certain level?
    - Are some areas more “important” to update then others?
    - How are all of our customizations (1000+ in ERP) handled by the patches?
    - What if we implemented an OSS Note that is fixed in a support patch?
    - How do we test to ensure we are not doing damage?
    - Can you “uninstall” security patches?
    - Is there a way to know what t-codes are affected by the updates?
Just for reference, we are running an ECC 6.0 system on Windows 2003 x64 servers, with a MS SQL 2005 db.  Our Prod environment is running in high-availability via MS clustering services.  Your input on these questions is appreciated.

  • Patch update question (didn't think it is this complicated)

    Hi,
I just started looking into weblogic server maintenance. New critical patch just went out.
We currently have adf 11.1.1.4 on weblogic 10.3.4 (yes i know we are due for an upgrade) with jrockit-jre1.6.0_26-R28.1.4 on production server.
New new patch came out for Jrockit R28.2.4 and earlier version.
Can anybody suggest me a path to apply the patch? Meaning, on staging server they just install this new Jrockit version (on top of the current installation) and see how current application behaves and if everything looks good, they install on production?
Also, the patch note doesn't say anything about if it is supported for welogic 10.3.4 or not. I believe, certification requirement are not updated as of now for this new patch. Any suggestion you guys have for me look into before going ahead and test this patch on staging server?
pls let me know if you need any further information.
    Thank you

As you have a support contract this is a perfect question for support. I doubt that we can help you out here.

  • Applying  new modules by patch 3180164 question

    Hi,
I have 11.5.8 on Windows 2000. I am going to upgrade to the 10.2 and installing patch 3180164 (UPDATE APPLPROD.TXT TO ADD NEW PRODUCTS FOR 11.5.10 MAINTENANCE PACK )
    Patch was installed .
But after applying this patch it needs:
...Once this patch has been applied, the Applications environment file must be
re-created on all application tier server nodes running UNIX or Linux, and
the Applications environment subkey must be re-created on all application
tier server nodes running Windows. Refer to the "Oracle Applications
Maintenance Utilities" manual for information about how to use AD
    Administration to perform these tasks.
How I can do it. Could you help me please ASAP.
    Thanks,
    Oleg

    Hi,
You need to generate the application environment files from adadmin (Create Applications environment file). Once you generate the new env file, open a new session and source the application env file again (envshell.cmd).

  • Patch cluster question.

What if ,all of my patches in solaris10 05/08 there are not find following:

How i can fill up 30 patches? Do command patchadd separetely for everyone? Or make all patch cluster in S mode? Do it in global? I must stop zones befor patchadd command?
    Please help?
    Edit/Delete Message

    Hi Hartmut,
I kind of got the idea. Just want to make sure. The zones 'romantic' and 'modern' show "installed" as the current status at cluster-1. These 2 zones are in fact running and online at cluster-2. So I will issue your commands below at cluster-2 to detach these zones to "configured" status :
    cluster-2 # zoneadm -z romantic detach
    cluster-2 # zoneadm -z modern detach
Afterwards, I apply the Solaris patch at cluster-2. Then, I go to cluster-1 and apply the same Solaris patch. Once I am done patching both cluster-1 and cluster-2, I will
go back to cluster-2 and run the following commands to force these zones back to "installed" status :
    cluster-2 # zoneadm -z romantic attach -f
    cluster-2 # zoneadm -z modern attach -f
CORRECT ?? Please let me know if I am wrong or if there's any step missing. Thanks much, Humphrey
