Patch Solaris 9/10 box..VVM

I am patching Solaris 9 & 10 servers tonight and we use Veritas Volume Manager for disk mirroring. Before patching do I need to work with mirror break or anything like that ? or else can i go ahead and do the patching directly irrespective of Veritas Volume Manager. Pls suggest me.

The sequence of events are:
Boot into solaris 8, put the installation disk into the drive. (The disks contents can be seen in solaris). Reboot the system. Openboot runs, i press stop+a anyway. Enter boot cdrom and get the error:
Bad magic number in disk label
Can't open disk label package
Cant open boot device.
If i enter boot disk, it will boot back to solaris.
I must be doing something wrong. The disk did work when i performed a test installation on a HP system. ?

From previous experience if your slapd is not running on your LDAP server then your clients will not boot if they are setup for ldap domain authentication. This is the same in NIS and NIS+. The only way to bring them up is to boot -s and change the nsswitch.conf file back to standalone i.e files and reboot machine.
In short if ldap server goes down clients are too, multi ldap servers are required to prevent single point failure.

"Short read error" after patching solaris 10 x86?

We recently bought an Ultra 20 with Solaris 10. The first thing we did was attempt to patch it with smpatch. Specifically, we did the following steps:
> smpatch update
> shutdown -i s -g 0
> smpatch add -x idlist=/var/sadm/disallowed_patch_list
> reboot
When the machine rebooted we got a "short read error" message when trying to load in various drivers and wouldn't boot. We assumed that the disk had crashed and we reinstalled solaris from the DVDs. After the reinstallation, we went to patch the machine again, with the same steps, and exactly the same thing happened!
So is there something wrong with patching solaris 10 on x86? Has anybody else experienced this problem where the patching corrupts the disks (or the drivers)?

There have always been "short read error"s during boot on <b>some</b> systems with Solaris 10 x86 since the release.

Do you get the error every time during boot? Sometimes it helps to
press <RETURN> at the boot prompt, and not let the system wait for
the five second timeout.

Patch Solaris 8 systems

Hi
Is there anyone that has successfully been able to patch Solaris 8 systems using this tool? If you have a guide I would be happy. I have tried a couple of times but failed even though I have installed required patches.

Does anything show up in the agent logs directory? You may have missing packages, such as SUNWbash, SUNWswmt, and SUNWgzip which are often missing on Solaris 8 systems.
If you are unable to find anything in the logs then I would advise opening a support case. Note that it is likely that we will ask you to collect information from the system using the [GDD script|http://www.sun.com/bigadmin/scripts/sunScripts/SUN-GDD_sun-connection-collect_noarch.tar.gz] . It would be worthwhile if you could collect the information whilst attempting to run a job against the system.
Run the script on the agent:
# ./SUN-GDD_SunConnection.sh -debugAgent -auto 1800 -o /var/tmpThis will enable debug-level logging on the agent and automatically collect the logs after 30 minutes - you may wish to adjust the time to suit.

Patching Solaris 10

I am unable to patch solaris 10 through the smc console. I keep getting the following error
UnsupportedClassVersionError: com/sun/patchpro/model/PatchProListener (Unsupported
major.minor version 49.0)
Does anyone know of a fix for this?

Patchpro is compiled using Java 5.0. It appears that your instance of SMC is running under Java 1.4.x.
A work around would be to change the JAVA_HOME variable in the script that launches SMC to point to /usr/java. On a stock Solaris 10 system, this should be Java 5.0 and it should take care of the issue.

Apache cores after patching Solaris 10

Hi Folks,
after patching Solaris 10 with the recommended Patch Cluster i'm not able to start Apache with apachectl sslstart.
Apache cores! Changing <VirtualHost default:443> to <IP-Addr.:443> in ssl.conf solves the problem.
Any idea why?

How can I disable javascript in Firefox 30 for all users on my Solaris 10 x86 box?

I have a Solaris 10 box in a secure environment (no Internet) with Firefox 30 installed. I need to lock javascript in a disabled state for all users. I realize each individual user can toggle javascript with about:config, but that is only a per/user activity. I want to set the value of javascript.enabled to false for all users. Additionally, no user should be able to modify this setting.
Is there a location with a config or prefs file that will affect all users?

Panic loop after patching solaris 10 x86

I have installed a number of patches on to my server and think I have messed things up somehow, wrong order, not in single user mode, missing dependencies, not rebooting, etc...
After installing I rebooted and now am stuck in a panic loop. I have gathered as much information as possible below.
The server is a Sunfire V20z running Solaris 10.

Installing solaris in virtual box

HI Everyone
i have installed solaris 10/09 os in oracle virtual box 4.0.2
Im facing following problems as mentioned below
1. I have installed usb driver and network driver for the virtual box and i have succesfully installed the extension packs also . while logging in to virtual machine
it captures my usb keyboard and usb mouse ,it not allows them to access the application of host os(windows xp) until i logout from virtual machine.
2.Usb mouse is working in virtual machine but im not able to see the mouse pointer and then i can identify the mouse movement when mouse accelaration is very slow.
3.I can't able configure internet connection for virtual machine in default adapter NAT.when i change the setting to host only network adapter
VM doesn't boot it runs continuosly with the message conflict with ip address
4.Can't able to adjust the screen resolution more than 800 x 600 .
Can you suggest me the solution for all these problems

The Host Key should be displayed in the lower right-hand corner of the VirtualBox machine's window. A pop-up message will also appear when you first start up the virtual machine, explaining that you will need the host key to escape out.

I have to install Solaris 8 on a ProLiant DL 140 server ( http://h18004.www1.hp.com/products/servers/platforms/index-dl.html )... It must be Solaris 7 or 8 because spectrum dont support higher versions of Solaris... When I boot from cdrom, I get the message that Solaris 8 dont have support for disks larger then 40 Gig. I have searched for that problem and the solution is to install a patch with de Device Configuration Assistant (=DCA) but that DCA gives the following problem on my screen

After searching a solution for that problem, I get the following information:
The bug is fixed by applying the Patches 108822-02 / 110930-01. 110930-01 contains a replacement DCA boot floppy, while 108822-02 is just the fixed boot.bin binary for an already installed system.
Installing the 110930-01 patch was no problem but I dont understand how I can install the 10822-02 patch. Can someone give me a simple explanation how I can do that? I have made the bootable floppy on a working Solaris machine.

Update oracle 10.2.0.2 to oracle 10.2.0.3 on solaris 32-bit box

I am using a test machine which running on solaris 10 32 bit. i installed oracle 10.2.0.2 and its working good.
I am planning to upgrade this database to 10.2.0.2. to 10.2.0.3.
So i am searching for the correct patch in metalink. but i unable to find the patch or patch number.
Kindly any one tell me correct patch number, so i will download and try to finish my task.
Another question : : : there is no 32 bit verison patch in metalink, if 64 bit patch will work in 32 bit???

For 10.2.0.3 upgrade patch number is Patchset 5337014 .
However 10.2.0.4 Patchset 6810189 is available on metalink... May be you can try to upgrade to 10.2.0.4.
Regarding 10.2.0.3 patchset for 32bit solaris, please raise SR with OSS

Patching Solaris 10 u9

Hi I'm an australian student, who has installed solaris 10 u9 on a spare pc at home to try out using a unix enviroment, I was wondering how I patch it to make sure it is secure? I tried using the update manager but it asks for a CSI, but I cant find a student or home user support package to buy? Is there no home user or student support available? Is there another unix variant i should try? Ive had enought playing with ubuntu Linux but if all else fails I'll just reinstall that.

You could try creating a user account on support.oracle.com and see if lets you download the patch cluster or security updates- although I suspect even then it will make you provide a support contract 1st.
Alternately, you could download Solaris 11 Express . That shouldn't require a support contract- but I don't know how often patches are released. Solaris Express 11/OpenSolaris have some noticable changes over Solaris 10 with package managment but the service management is basically the same. A lot of the "core" unix will be similar between Solaris 10, Solaris 11 Express and various linux flavos. The open source packages (e.g. apache, GCC, samba ) are much more current for Solaris 11 express then they are for Solaris 10.)
I would still keep up-to-date on current versions of Linux tho. At my work we run Solaris 10 for key servers like the file servers and LDAP servers, but we find linux is a better platform for web-based stuff where you want current version of apache, PHP etc.

J2sdk1_3_1_07 not running on up-to-date patched Solaris 8

I have installed all public Solaris 8 patches as well as all public J2SE patches for 1.4.1_02 (should make stable for 1.3.1_07) and the bin/java program won't launch on my machine. The 1.4.1_02 bin/java will launch.

if I execute ./bin/java -version it just hangs. If I truss the process, I can see it is just in a state of polling. Then I ctrl+z and bg, then %% to foreground it and it finishes executing by printing out the version information and exiting gracefully.

Customer is running Solaris with CiscoWorks LMS 3-2 bundle, I see someone else setup a Perl Script to forward syslog messages to another box, but they are getting a second message that’s blank we each forwarded message and want to know how to get rid of the blank messages. If you know Perl do you see anything wrong?
