Patch tool just blends, doesn't replace

I've seen tutorials about the patch tool, but my patch tool doesn't appear to do what the tutorials do...
I've read other threads about how this tool is supposed to blend near the edges to give a good result, but this is blending the whole thing.  I've already deleted my prefs file by starting photoshop with ctrl alt shift pressed.  I've also reset the tool.  These screenshots were taken immediately after opening photoshop cs4 and deleting the prefs file.  Can anyone tell me what to do to use the patch tool like it's shown?  I'm not as interested in alternate methods to achieve the same result -- I've already used the clone stamp tool to do the job.  But why doesn't my patch tool seem to work the way it should?

Curt Y - there are two options for the patch tool 'source' and 'destination'. You seem to be confused
Bruderbell, the patch tool works this way - it analyses areas OUTSIDE the selected area to make its decisions as to what to use to replace texture and color. Because your area it on the edge of the canvas, the only pixel data it has are your dark pixels. Its working correctly
To sort out your problem, start with the Clone Tool, make a loose clone over of the dark area. Then use the healing brush  or the patch tool to make the transitions smoother, and eiliminate any tonal errors.  With a little practice you will be able to achieve a perfect heal this way

  • Patch tool quirk

I'm using the magic wand to select an area I want to replace, then use the patch tool to find pixels to replace it with. It looks good in the preview but when I let go of the mouse, it seems to try and blend what used to be in the selection with the new pixels, rather than just replacing them like I want.
I read where your supposed to include some pixels outside of the area as well so I expanded the selection, but it still does too much blending. Is there any way to just have it replace and not blend?

The patch tool has its limitations. With practice it can be quite handy in certain situations. As Freeagent says, try the Clone Stamp where the Patch won't hack it. It's much improved in CS4 too!

  • Patch tool leaving border.

Seems when I select something that should be easy enough to fix, meaning not by any edges and like a spec on the sky, that the patch tool would blend it nicely, but it's leavin an edge pattern for me.
I reset the tool, made sure it's on source as well. Everytime I patch tool something, I get a weird kind of border around the area I healed. The inside looks fine and is nicely done, but the pattern left kind of makes it pointless.
Wondering if anyone else had this problem? I thought resetting the tool would work, but it still does it.

Your example isn't very good because you didn't use a background containing gradient and/or structures. Actually, you created a situation in which the patch tool does an excellent job.
What you probably are referring to is a "smudged" edge around your patch. This is just the way the patch tool works, it tries to blend in the edges and in doing so often blurs the edges. I don't know what kind of image you're working on, but try to use the clone and heal tools as much as you can (set those to rather "hard" too, or you'll notice them having the same fuzzy look at the edges like the patch tool.

  • Patch Tool option bar - missing word "Mode"

The new Content Aware Move tool has the word Mode next to its drop down box on the options bar. The Patch tool has the word Patch next to its drop down. For consistency the word Patch on the patch tool options bar should be replaced with Mode. Ideally instead of Mode, they both could display the name of the tool, but I expect Content Aware Move takes up too much real estate.

"You totally lost me there, and I have no clue as to what your last question means."
"I think I now know what you mean."
Evidently language is of difficulty for you.
Perhaps the Oxford dictionary can provide you with your much needed “sensible, meaningful” content.
According to the Oxford dictionary, a dialogue is to "Take part in a conversation or discussion to resolve a problem."  It also states that a dialogue is "A discussion between two or more people or groups, especially one directed toward exploration of a particular subject or resolution of a problem.”
That IS the inherent nature of posts. A conversation is reciprocation.  Questions, followed by more questions.
It is not difficult to understand.
"how to ask your questions correctly for quicker and better answers" is best actualized by simply asking.
Is it a Mac; is it not, etc.
That IS sufficient.  That IS "quicker and better answers[ing]."  That IS what a dialogue IS.   And that IS actually what is "sensible," "meaningful," and "detailed."
The Oxford dictionary can best delineate and elucidate your lack of comprehension in what ACTUALLY “meaning” is.
As well as what is "sensible" AND "detailed."
By the way, am I being repetitive.
Still confused.  Let the experts that do not require much explanation respond with "quicker and better answers" for both "sensible, complete" responses." They are not "lost," "blind," or provide "incomplete" drivel.

With other images same problem, no matter how large selection or small. There is always transparent silhouette of selection.
On other devices with the same images, tool work perfectly.
    Sorry for my english.

  • Help please  Patch tool

using Destination  (and the blue grapelooking pattern)   when I drag selection over  the repair area, it's blurred and transparent looking.  Not the patched it should be.
    Transparent is NOT  checked.
this is so aggravating.  Can't find help anywhere.  My book doesn't address how to stop this.  Same thing if I try to use source.

The Patch Tool uses the same or similar algorithms as the Spot Healing and Healing Brush, which means it is trying to blend with the underlying pixels.  If you want a pure replacement, you can try using the Pattern Stamp Tool that is nested with the Clone Stamp.
I hope this addresses your question.

  • Patch Tool-CS5 behaviour

In the past, I've successfully used the Patch Tool by selecting "New Selection" , & "Source.
Next, I would make a selection of the area I wished to fill/repair; then Lt-Click/Drag the selection to an area of the image that I wished to use as a "fill, and when It looked OK, release the Lt Click button, and the "original" selection area would "fill" with the area I had dragged to.
With CS5, I do the same thing, but when I release the Mouse button, the dragged selection disappears, as it should, but the "original" selection area does not fill.  It remains selected, but is unchanged as to content, as if the final fill execution has failed.
I'm probably doing something wrong, but it's escaping me?
    Leigh

    Something must have changed.....
I've had the same problem for nearly a year and haven't found a solution.
    Just to reiterate:
On a single layer, whether backgroung, duplicate of background or another, and trying to patch an area ON THAT LAYER,
with Source checked, and Transparent NOT checked, what happens when I move the patch is this....
the selected area changes to match the underlying pixels until I release the mouse.  On release, the patched area becomes a blend of the original selection and the area I wanted to use as a patch.
It is also apparent that the edges are feathered.
In short, it doesn't work well.
I've searched the Adobe help site (forums, etc.) and Google, and found many descriptions of trouble with the Patch Tool, but no real solutions.
I have continuously updated (12.0.4 x64) and deleted my Preferences, and reset all the tools.  To no avail.
The Patch Tool was very useful once.  But it's not working now.  Not for me on my iBook.
If anyone has a definite fix, or any other suggestions, I'd love to hear them!
    Thanks,
    Carl

  • In Photoshop CS4- using patch tool-

I select an area I want to repair, click source, then drag to the area I want to use to make the repair and release. It looks great in the preview, before I release. As soon as I release it disappears.
For example, after using the automate tool to combine multiple images into a panarama with a transparent background there are a few blank areas. I select one of the blank areas with the patch tool, click source then drag to the area I want to use as the replacement and release. As soon as I release, it goes back to the transparent background. The transparent button is NOT selected.
This is a Windows Vista system, with NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT video, If I try to do updates to CS4 is sas it is using the latest driver. Which it lists as version 11.0.2.
Any idea how to fix this?

In photoshop cs4 the patch tool doesn't work on transparent areas.
In other words the area has to be opaque (not transparent)
If they are small areas you might try the Healing Brush Tool.
Or use the healing brush tool and/or clone stamp tool and then patch the area with the patch tool.

  • The Patch Tool

    Hi,
I am using the patch tool to patch (!) areas of an image.  Instead of patching the selection into the image, PS4 blends it, so that some of the patch and some of the original image are visible.  I've searched for a way to instruct PS4 to reduce the opacity but I can't find such an option.  Is it possible to truly 'patch' and not 'blend' an area of an image?
    Thanks for you help!

  • Proper Use of the Healing Brush & Patch Tool

When using the Patch tool and Healing Brush tool to smooth skin, I cannot seem to avoid "grabbing" dark coloring from the clothing as I get close to the edge of the skin.  I have the sample source anchored in the middle of an area far away from the clothing edge, but if I get close to the clothing it pulls from that color and "bleeds" into my healing area.
I've tried to view tutorials on the Healing Brush, but haven't found anything that addresses this specific condition, just standard "how to" stuff.
Thank you for any advise and direction here.

I'll give you a little trick as you can see the preview of the are you are patching it is possible to do a patch clone sort to speak.
    it works like this.
    http://mysite.verizon.net/wzphoto/patch.mov
if the angle of the clothes do not match you can copy a section and paste and then rotate the section to match and use it as the source for
    the patch tool.
BTW the idea is that you have to include the contrasting areas so the do not cause a blending. even if the darker area needs no repair.

  • Patch tool, why mess with something that wasn't broken?

I edit a large amount of product photography and I used to use the patch tool frequently to fix areas that needed cleaned up that had some sort of detail. Below you will find an image I was correcting and the result. I was not trying to get rid of the little nub, just replace it with one that looked better.
I tried to use the content replace tool as well and it not only changed the area I was trying to correct but the part I was taking from. It also left a weird shape around the part I replaced. See images below.
    -original                                                                                                                              -after replace tool

The above edit was done in CS5.
Below is CS6. Instead of recreating the detail, it was eliminated.

  • Patch Tool How To

CS5, Photoshop. I want to replace a short portion of the top of a black turtleneck sweater with the adjacent skin color. In other words, lower the height of the turtleneck on the neck. Skin color is very light white. I have tried th patch tool, but it does not change the balck to the white skin color. It just lightens the black slightly. Any ideas on how to replace the balck with the light white?

Try the Cloning Tool, or selection then copy/paste and move the layer with the pasted pixels.

  • My Elements 9 cropping tool just stopped working...crops the entire photo.

My Elements 9 cropping tool just started cropping the entire image away today.  Just got an Adobe air update last night. This is nothing I have done. All that's left after using my crop tool is a .jpg symbol. Please help.

First try resetting the tool. If that doesn't work delete the settings file by holding down Ctrl+Alt+Shift as you start PSE and answering the prompt to delete.

  • Need help with Patch Tool in CS5

I am having a problem using the patch tool in Photoshop CS5. I click on the Patch Tool and select the Source option from the upper tool bar. Then I circle a gray area in the background of my photo and, holding down the left mouse button, I drag the selection to a black area in the background and release the mouse button. Instead of turning the selected area black it just makes the area slightly darker than it was originally. I just don’t understand why I can’t use the patch tool and any help would be appreciated.

Thank you very much for these suggestions. Robert

My smudge tool isn't working correctly like it should in Photoshop cs5. Can someone help me?
    Heres an example. :

When i do that, the image just messes up, My intention , for example. say i wanted to do a makeup edit, and i wanted to the picture to be more realistic so i added black around the noise and used the smudge tool to blend in the mark to look like it was drawn in a bit. Instead of doing that the smudge tool just goes one straight direction just as in the picture above.
