Problems with new recom/patchs sol 8 on a Inspiron 8000 laptop
hi everyone,
Just a warning 'maybe' if any you are going to install the new ~17.5Mb sol8 8_x86_rec... file on a Inspiron 8000, you might not be able to use the USB keyboard plugged into the back for keyboard accesss. The following error message comes up on boot ' usba driver cannot be found'...???????? it recognises the USB keyboard in slot 0, the internel touchpad/mouse still works ok. I thought it was just me but the previous 14.5Mb 8_x86_rec... files installs ok and no usba driver problem is encountered it must be in the patch that is causing the problem.the files are installed from a console screen not under CDE enviroment.
The only solution was to write over the previous install or upgrade from scratch. lucky for me i keep a history of previous patch/rec files i use on DAT/CD.
James.Sorry for not replying been away for a month, i reinstalled X86_8 then added the Big Admin patch 4 and worked ok just follow the instructions correctly, still have the keyboard problems, someone out their must of made a patch for this by now. :o)

Is patching Sol 10 machines with zones safe?
Now that Sun update has been released, "smpatch update" explicitly checks for the presence of non global zones and refused to run.
Now, its fairly trival to reproduce the "smpatch update" functionality from "smpatch download" which still works and a bit of scripting.
Ive done this on a test machine with zones with no obvious ill effects.
However since Sun went to the trouble of disabling "smpatch update", you have to presume there was a good reason.
So is patching machines with zones safe. Or is there some known problem with doing this. The problem was that the underlying tool patchadd was not zones aware and then changes (I believe for bug: 6200143 ) changed the exit codes that smpatch relies on.
Now in Solaris 10 patchadd/patchrm now returns only an exit code of 1 or 0 when using zones which is insufficient both for smpatch and for the Update Manager.
So there are two options:
If the system does not have any local zones configured then you can run "patchadd -t" in transitional mode which reverts back to the old pre Solaris 10 rich return codes that smpatch needs.
If there are zones on the system, using smpatch download + patchadd will work, but you cannot get rich status from patchadd:
Running "patchadd -t" on a system with local zones gives:
# patchadd -t
Transition patching (-t option) is not supported in a zones environment.

When will updatemanager support system with zones
Anyone aware when SUN updatemanager will support patching sol 10 systems with multiple zones ?
Its my understanding that the first official release should support zones as well.
Note that it seems that you can use the update manager together with the regular tools, they only suggest that you shouldn't use them at the same time. In other words; in theory you should be able to use your current tools for supporting the zones, and the update manager to do the rest.
Personally I wouldn't take the risk and wait for the official release. -
Recommended patch 120445-01 will not install with Sol. 9 (09/2005)
Patch 120445-01 will not apply to a Solaris 9 (09/2005) setup. The hardware is an Ultra-80. Although it is recommended, it fails with the "patchadd" message:
Checking installed patches...
One or more patch packages included in 120445-01 are not installed on this system.
The host was installed from scratch and the "smpatch" was run until it had no more patches to apply except this one.
For us, this patch is only an annoyance. When I cursorily read the description, I doubt that these features exists on this hardware.I had to install the packages:
TSBWvplr.u
TSBWvplu.u
from the DVD media. I could not find these packages from the CD media that I used. I had to use another machine to extract the packages.
I saw another post where it mentioned that patch 120445-01 would not apply. I suspect that the package install of it already has this patch. -

I know that it's working, since it's returning more than the 9 that went in, but I'd like to get the info for every patche returned by the analysis.Neither of the three patches without descriptions above are listed in the patchdb.zip file. As such there is no metadata available for them. I assume then that they must be listed in the requirements of one or more of the other patches.
Anyway, the reason ther is no descriptions is that they are not listed in the patchdb.zip file and as such no metadata is available to be presented. -
Java Web Console starts in "user local mode" after Sol 10 Patches
After applying Solaris 10 recommended patch cluster, the web console on my SPARC platform starts the web console such that only the local host clients can connect via web (https://localhost:6789/). Webconsole log file states "the console instance "console" is starting in local user mode. Prior to applying the patch cluster, the log file stated "the console instance "console" is starting in user mode." How do I get it to start in regular user mode?
Patch cluster is dated: 24-Apr-2009. I am running Version 3.1 of the webconsole. Using the webconsole primarily for adminsistration of Sun Java Directory Server 6.3.1 using the DSCC.Thank you for the response. Prior to implementing your recommended fix, I discovered the following Example in the man pages for smcwebserver:
Example 3 Using SMF Property to Allow Remote Access
The following sequence of commands allows remote access to the Sun Web Console server.
# svccfg -s svc:/system/webconsole \
setprop options/tcp_listen = true
# svcadm refresh svc:/system/webconsole
Executing the above commands restored full webconsole access. -
Cant download Required OS and Component Patches for Sol. 10 SPARC-Sunsolve

You have encountered the following error(s) or warning(s):
o An application error has occurred. The error is logged for further analysis.
The URL is: http://sunsolve.sun.com/show.do?target=patches/patch-access
Anyone know what the heck is going on, or how I go about getting Sun to fix it?

Does Sol Exp 12/06 has Daylight Saving Time(USA) patch included?
Hi,
I am about to finally install Solaris Express 12/06 but I was wondering if it already has this patch included or not.. I cant find info about it... or maybe I should wait until the next version (which it should be out soon)... any insight?
Thanks!11/06 doesn't, you need to have 122032-03 which came out 2007/1/12 so I doubt express would.
Though it looks like 122033-02 was out but I don't know if it the right fix. -
Sol. Man. dump STORAGE_PARAMETERS_WRONG_SET
Sol. Man. dump STORAGE_PARAMETERS_WRONG_SET
Hi experts,
We are facing the following problem in our SM system - SM 7.0 with EhP1 SPS 06. When certain transactions are started a short dump is generated with error text STORAGE_PARAMETERS_WRONG_SET. This is a part of the dump text:
What happened?
The current program had to be terminated because of an error when installing the R/3 System.
The program had already requested 1 382 466 704 bytes from the operating system with 'malloc' when the operating system reported after a further memory request that there was no more memory space available.
Error analysis
When the program was running, it was established that more memory was needed than the operating system is able safely to provide. To avoid a system crash, you must prevent this situation from occurring.

Solaris 8 patches added to Solaris 9 patch cluster and vice versa
Has anyone noticed this? On the Solaris 8 and 9 patch cluster readmes, it shows sol 9 patches have been added to the sol 8 cluster and sol 8 patches have been added to the sol 9 cluster. what's the deal? I haven't found any information about whether or not this is a mistake.
Desiree,
Solaris 9's kernel patch 112233-12 was the last revision for that particular patch number. The individual zipfile became so large that it was subsequently supplanted by 117191-xx and that has also been supplanted when its zipfile became very large, by 118558-xx.
Consequently you will never see any newer version than 112233-12 on that particular patch.
What does <b>uname -a</b> show you for that system?
Solaris 8 SPARC was similarly effected, for 108528, 117000 and 117350 kernel patches.

Upgrading Sol 10 u3 x86 -- Sol 10 u6 x86 without using LU/Live Upgrade ?
Hi all,
I've got a group of SunFire x4200 M2 hosts currently running Solaris 10 x86 u3, fully patched. They are using the internal LSI Logic SAS controller in a RAID1 config for the disk environment.
When they were originally installed, the thought of running up an SVM mirror wasn't on the cards for our SE who installed them - nor was the potential for using Live Upgrade.
It occurs to me, that whilst Sun will release and continue to release patches for u3, I need to actually migrate to u6 in order to get certain functionality (i.e - new ZFS genesis, iscsitadm/iscsiadm, root zpools). I don't believe this will be "patched in" later for older versions, will it?
How can I cleanly upgrade my hosts without losing any config data or information? Is it even possible? These are production hosts, so I want to do this in the safest way possible. Many have told me I can simply slip in the Sol 10 update 6 media - and boot from it, then find that it will detect the old OS, but I am a little skeptical.
If someone could point me in the right direction here, that would be appreciated!
Thanks.
zThe installer polls many different things on the existing installation. If any of them aren't exactly right, it won't offer the upgrade option, and it won't give you any hints about what tests didn't pass. (Did I find a root slice, is there a root filesystem on it? Does the /etc/vfstab on that partition make sense? Do I have the space in those filesystems to upgrade? ...)
The most common ones to fail have to do with disk layout. It's possible to move /var around, or have an extra partition mounted that the installer doesn't realize is irrelevant for the upgrade.
If that's not the problem, it's very difficult to pin down. At one level, most of the installer logic is just scripts that you could read to understand the logic, but it's difficult to tell which script is running when, so following the logic is not easy.

Recent changes in patch entitlement for Solaris 10 sparc systems?
Have there been any, especially those which non-contract customers should know about?
I am running Sol 10 u3 sparc on a Sun Blade workstation. Today, I noticed that some patches already installed on my system are now considered private on SunSolve (e.g. 143510-01). Also, kernel patch 142900-04 is private! I've been using SUM to get kernel patches forever (I am at 142900-03). What happened? Hopefully this is just a glitch. I can't believe that kernel patches will be private from now on!
There is a certain Xsun security patch which I have deliberately not installed. For years, it has come up in SUM. Today, for the first time, it is gone.
I am also running Sol 10 u8 on an x86 system. No problem with patches there - all normal. I installed kernel patch 142901-04 on it today. Also without a support contract.
What is going on?Gary,
That is a great idea. I've been wondering about other ways Oracle could handle this issue, such as charging per patch, etc. This issue applies very much to Sun Studio 12.1 (see other recent thread about SS patches in this forum). There is NO WAY I, or the organization I work for, could justify spending $1,000+ per year just for SS patches. $300+/year for OS patches may be doable, but still probably wouldn't be worth it, unless SEVERE security holes are discovered that must be patched immediately, which I have never found to be the case over the last 8 years.
Your idea sounds like an ideal solution, but I fear that it is highly unlikely that Oracle would consider it. That would make some manager look bad in having to change his/her "great plan." Oracle should find some way to differentiate big "enterprise" Solaris users from 1-2 box shops who can't afford these pricey support contracts, but still depend on Solaris. For the last 7 years, public patches and these forums have done the job for me, and I have NEVER had to initiate a service or support call or request. That is testament to the stability of Solaris and the brilliance of its engineers. -
File sys/tsol/label.h not found, can not compile sendmail on Sol-10 x86
I am building sendmail 8.14.2 on Solaris 10 on an Intel machine and encountered this error.
File <rpc/rpc.h> is including the file <sys/tsol/label.h>
but there is no sys/tsol directory.
The file <sys/tsol/label.h> and the directory <sys/tsol/> are on
Sparc Sol 10 and belong to the SUNWhea package.
The Intel machine has the SUNWhea package completely installed
but the <sys/tsol> directory or the files are not part of that package.
What package do I need to install on the Intel machine?insert CD 1 or the DVD into your machine and boot it upThanks!
The machine is not physically near me, so
are there options using DVD / CD image files?
(a) Like mounting the image as a disk (lofiadm etc)? or
(b) mounting the images on another Sol 10 machine,
exporting from there using nfs etc?
Thanks
Added later:
I logged onto the sunsolve site using my email address,
the same login I used to download CD image of the OS.
When I tried to download the patch cluster it told me:
SunSolve Patch Access
You have encountered the following error(s) or warning(s):
o This download is only available to users with a valid Sun Service Plan associated to their SunSolve user account
o Please click the Edit Account link to update your sunsolve contract number
Also, I located this document on Sun's site: Solaris 10 : Network based installation,
so I think I'll get the information to upgrade in it.
Thanks again.
