Patchset 10.2.0.4 question

We are running 10.2.0.3 rdbms on linux I tanium platform. We have a physical standby server for one of our production databases. The physical standby server also has b.i. database instance that runs on the same server.
We ran into a bug in the b.i. database sql code that cannot be fixed unless we implement the 10.2.0.4 patchset.
My question is...can we install the 10.2.0.4 patchset on the server where the physical standby is running before we install the patchset on the primary production server?
We are not configured for switchover just failover.

Thanks for your reply...The server where the physical standby server is running shares the oracle_home with the b.i. database instance? Are you suggesting to install a completely different oracle_home for the bi db instance and just install 10.2.0.4?
Not sure I understand?
Thx.

    In his blog, John Minkjan mentions that OBIEE 11.1.1.5.0 is available for download (May 11, 2011). Is it possible to upgrade from 11.1.1.3.0 to 11.1.1.5.0 by applying patches to 11.1.1.3.0, or must we deinstall r3 then install r5?

    Hi thompson,
    To download the patchset here is the link http://download.oracle.com/docs/html/E18558_01/fusion_requirements.htm#BGBBDBBH
    About upgrades being out of out of place,we need to install the new version of the the software and migrate the metadata from the old installation.Its bit complex but find out the steps mentioned in rittman's log.

    My question is :
    It's possible to loss functionality applying the patchset?
    (I did read the README, but I'm not sure)
    Thanks in advance!

    Your first issue is that QA is not exact copy of Production. It makes it difficult to really test these sort of stuff. Most of the differences are related to Application Server stuff. Have you checked the compatibility matrix for App server and its repository? Maybe you should upgrade App server as well.
    I've applied 10.2.0.4 on HP-UX cluster many times without problem. But that doesn't mean it works for everyone. Your safest option is to make QA like Prod.

  • Question about a bug which should be fixed in the 10.2.0.4 patchset

    Hi,
    We have a 10.2.0.4 single instance database on Sun Solaris SPARC (64-bit) and have the same symptoms as described in Bug 4643723 (error codes and the stack trace are the same). That bug should be already fixed in 10.2.0.4 patchset.
    Does anyone have experience on how to proceed in such cases - I mean, is making a SR on metalink an obvious action?
    Is it possible that the patchset wasn't applied correctly although "opatch lsinventory" outputs that the "10g Release 2 Patchset 3 (10.2.0.4)" is installed and SYS.REGISTRY$HISTORY also contains a record of the upgrade. The upgrade from 10.2.0.1 to 10.2.0.4 was performed 6 months ago and the database was continuously up and runing till then.
    Thanks for any answers

    many bugs can have the same errors. Raise an SR.
    Oracle Support will ask for an opatch lsinventory, and may ask you verify library versions, or relink.

  • Patchset 3 Install Question

    I have Oracle Developer Suite 10g (10.1.2.0.2) in XP Pro sp 2 enviroment. Tried to install patchset 3. It force me to create a new oracle home, which maybe is normal but then when trying to proceed, gave me a message... "There are no patches that need to be applied from the patchset Oracle Application Server and Developer Suite 10g Rel 2 Software update 10.1.2.3.0."
    I have this set up in a virtual machine as a means of testing for my production enviroment which has 10g (9.0.4). Am I doing something wrong? My 10.1.2.0.2 version, however, does test successfully (test.fmx) with IE 7 which is part of the purpose for the patch install. Would apprciate any advice. Thanks.

    > and the destination is the oracle home
    In the Destination section, both the Name and Path lines have drop-down icons at the right hand end. My Name entry initially shows "oracleas1" and Path shows C:\OraHome_1.
    But as soon as I open the Name drop-down and select DevSuiteHome1, I cannot get back to oracleas1. And selecting DevSuiteHome1 causes the path to change correctly to my C:\oracle\DevSuiteHome_1 path.
    The oracleas1 must be some initial default. It is bogus, and that is probably your problem.

    Can anyone help me figure out why the domU is just hanging/blocked?It's not hanging (blocked just means it doesn't need the CPU) -- it's just switched into a graphic mode that the console view can't display. You can either VNC into the guest, or change the kernel boot parameters by removing rhgb quiet and replacing them with console=xvc0 -- this should allow you to see the full boot process and answer the first-boot interview questions without using VNC.
    You can get the VNC details by running: virsh dumpxml <domain ID> and you can get the domain ID from the xm list output.

  • Help Educate Me on an RMAN Recovery Question

    Perhaps I am not understanding how recovery should work, so, let me lay out my situation:
    First things first:
    Oracle 11.2.0.2.5 on AIX 6.1
    Source database: POR02P on a 4 node cluster
    Auxiliary database: POR02x (single instance)
    I want to duplicate my source database to my auxiliary database as of 02-APR-2013 at 3:00PM
    Here are how my backups run:
    LEVEL0 On Sunday at 8:00 AM
    LEVEL1 Differential all other days at 8:00 AM
    Intermediate Archivelogs backups run at the following times daily: 00:45, 11:45, 19:45
    March 31 is my LEVEL0.
    So, the way I understand things, to do this duplicate:
    I need my LEVEL0 from Sunday
    I need my LEVEL1 from Monday
    I need my LEVEL1 from Tuesday
    I need all my archivelogs from just before the LEVEL1 on Tuesday started all the way to after 3:00PM on Tuesday:
    Restore archive backups from:
    4/2 11:45
    4/2 19:45
    All my backups include a controlfile.
    According to my above analysis, I made sure the required files were on disk.
    After making sure my files were on disk, I went to my source database and ran the following to make sure Oracle had all the files it needs:
    RMAN> run {
    2> set until time = "to_date('02-APR-2013 15:00:00','DD-MON-YYYY HH24:MI:SS')";
    3> restore database preview summary;
    4> }
    This above command succeeds and I can verify all the files it mentions are on disk.
    Here is the problem, the restore of the LEVEL0 and LEVEL1's succeed.  When it starts recovery, it fails asking for an archive log that both:
    *1. Was not listed as part of the PREVIEW command*
    *2. Is from a time between my LEVEL0 and first LEVEL1.*
    I was under the impression that RMAN does not need archivelogs from BETWEEN incremental backups.
    Am I wrong about this?
    Doesn't an incremental LEVEL1 differential go back to the last incremental and get all the needed blocks thereby making the "in between" archivelogs obsolete?
    If I am wrong about this, that solves part of my confusion...
    The other part of my confusion is why does the PREVIEW command not specify the archivelogs it asks for during recovery?
    If you can answer my question now, you can skip the rest.
    Else, here are all the dirty details.
    Here is mt PREVIEW command as run on the source database. The output supports how I think this should work:
    RMAN> run {
    2> set until time = "to_date('02-APR-2013 15:00:00','DD-MON-YYYY HH24:MI:SS')";
    3> restore database preview;
    4> }
    executing command: SET until clause
    Starting restore at 23-APR-2013 13:47:30
    using channel ORA_DISK_1
    using channel ORA_DISK_2

    Okay, so at this point, I think I have everything I need.
    Here is my RMAN command:
    # start up auxiliary in nomount
    run {
    allocate auxiliary channel a1 type disk;
    allocate auxiliary channel a2 type disk;
    allocate auxiliary channel a3 type disk;
    allocate auxiliary channel a4 type disk;
    set until time = "to_date('02-APR-2013:15:00:00','DD-MON-YYYY:HH24:MI:SS')";
    DUPLICATE DATABASE TO por02x
    BACKUP LOCATION '/backup_rman/backupset/por02p'
    NOFILENAMECHECK

    GROUP 2 ('+DB_REDO') SIZE 512M,

    For now, I won't paste in the entire output of the log,
    just enough to see that it works fine through the restore,
    then fails at an archivelog. If someone wants the whole
    thing, I can add it in:
    RMAN> run {

    3> allocate auxiliary channel a2 type disk;
    4> allocate auxiliary channel a3 type disk;

    Thanks for anyone's time. Would be happy to provide
    more info.

    Levi,
    Thank you very much for your insight.
    However, I may have found something. I have not fully tested and found a solution so I have not posted an update yet...I want to make sure I have a complete answer. However, I will provide some details.
    I decided to go ahead and restore ALL my archivelogs just to see if I could get the recovery to work.
    It still did not work!
    So, I happened to look at my alert log (can't believe I did not check it before) and I saw this:

    Then, I looked on Metalink and found this:
    Oracle Support Document 1098638.1 (Rman Duplicate fail ORA-19755, Tries Open The Block Change Tracking File of Source DB) can be found at: https://support.oracle.com/epmos/faces/DocumentDisplay?id=1098638.1
    [https://support.oracle.com/epmos/faces/DocumentDisplay?id=1098638.1]
    Now, this document is very interesting within the context of the problem I am having.  However, it says a few things:
    1. This is fixed in the oracle patchset 11.2.0.2 as part of Bug 7500916.
    ---I am on patchset 11.2.0.2!
    2. The workaround is to disable change tracking before duplicate.
    ---this is not really an option for me...we like having this turned on...it considerably speeds up our backups
    3. Workaround is to set DB_FILE_NAME_CONVERT in the SET-clause of duplicate, instead of using DB_FILE_NAME_CONVERT setting in an init.ora or spfile.
    ---tried this...did not work
    4. Workaround is to create a dummy file in the location where the error ORA-19755 is signalled.
    ---have not tried this yet
    Another interesting thing to note:
    My database is left in mounted state when it fails.  After seeing this document, just for fun I:
    SQL> alter database disable block change tracking;
    Database altered.
    And Then:
    RMAN> run {
    2> set until time = "to_date('02-APR-2013:15:00:00','DD-MON-YYYY:HH24:MI:SS')";
    3> recover database;

    So, it finishes the recovery. However, I did not yet try to open resetlogs because this was originally a duplicate and doing an open resetlogs would not complete all the post-duplicate operations.
    Also, looking at the logs applied when running the above recover, now it only uses logs that were specified in the original PREVIEW command.
    I am going to play around some more and I promise I will post back with whatever results I happen across.

  • Oracle 9.2.0.3.0 patch set for windows - questions

    Hi!
    I have for that some questions. I have oracle 9.2.0.1.0 on a windows 2003 server running with one local database - no real apllication cluster.
    I don't understand which instructions I have to make for oracle upgrade?
    Must I also make the 3. instruction? Connect to databse prior and drop?
    Must I also make the post install action for my database?
    (startup migrate ...)
    what means at post install actions the following:
    'execute these post install actions only if you have one or more databases associated to the upgraded $oracle_homee.
    My database path is e:\oracle\oradata\database my oracle path is e:\oracle\ora92 have I in my case make the post install actions?
    Thanks for help!
    1. When applying this patchset on Windows NT, XP or Windows 2000, you must log onto the system as a user with Administrative privileges
    (e.g. as a user which is a member of the local Administrators group).
    2. Unzip the downloaded patch set file into a new directory.
    3. Drop the xmlconcat function by running the following commands:
    drop public synonym xmlconcat;
    drop function xmlconcat;
    4. Shut down any existing Oracle Server instances in the ORACLE_HOME to be patched with normal or immediate priority. i.e.: Shutdown all instances (cleanly). Stop the database services, and stop all listener, agent and other Oracle processes running in or against the ORACLE_HOME to be installed into.
    5. Perform the following pre-install steps for Real Application Clusters (RAC) enviroments only:
    IN ADDITION TO STOPPING ALL ORACLE SERVICES IN THE ORACLE_HOME TO BE UPGRADED:
    If you are running in a RAC enviroment, stop the following Windows service(s)/devices(s) using the Net Stop command:
    Stop the Windows service named "OracleGSDService"
    Stop the Windows service named "OracleCMService9i".
    Stop the Windows device named "OraFenceService" (This Device does NOT show up as a Service in the Control Panel).
    For Example:
    C:\>net stop OracleGSDService
    C:\>net stop OracleCMService9i
    C:\>net stop OraFenceService
    Once the above steps have been performed on all the nodes of the cluster, you should then be able to upgrade the OSD components to the 9.2.0.3 versions. This can be accomplished by...
    xcopy all the files in the \Disk1\preinstall_rac\osd\*.* directory to the directory in which the OSD components were originally installed on all nodes(typically %SystemRoot%\system32\osd9i).
    Note: You may also be able to look in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Oracle\OSD9i registry key to determine the directory in which the original OSD components were installed. Now the OSD components can be restarted on all the nodes in the cluster.
    C:\>net start OraFenceService
    C:\>net start OracleCMService9i
    C:\>net start OracleGSDService
    After all of the above steps have been completed on all the nodes of the cluster, you are now ready to proceed with the Oracle 9.2.0.3.0 patchset installation.
    6. Start the installer:
    If the current Installer version is less than 2.2.0.18.0 then download the Installer 2.2.0.18.0 from Oracle Metalink where it can be accessed with the bug number 2878462 and choosing the MS Windows NT/2000 Server platform, then run the setup.exe 2.2.0.18.0 from the C:\Program Files\Oracle\oui\install directory .
    7. You may install the Patch Set through either an interactive or a silent installation.
    To perform an interactive installation using the Oracle Universal Installer graphical interface:
    1. Start the installer from the newly installed OUI 2.2.0.18.0 by running the version of setup.exe located at C:\Program Files\Oracle\oui\install and verify
    that the version of the OUI GUI is 2.2.0.18.0 before proceeding.
    2. Follow the steps given below within the installer:
    1. On the Welcome screen, click the Next button. This will display the File Locations screen.
    2. Click the Browse button for the Source... entry field and navigate to the stage directory where you unpacked
    the Patch Set tar file.
    3. Select the products.jar file. Click the Next button
    The products file will be read and the installer will load the product definitions.
    The products to be loaded will be displayed (verify ORACLE_HOME setting for this first).
    4. Verify the products listed and then click on the Install button.
    5. Once the installation has completed successfully, it will display End of Installation. Click on Exit and confirm
    to exit the installer.
    To perform a silent installation requiring no user intervention:
    1. Copy the response file template provided in the response directory where you unpacked the Patch
    Set tar file.
    2. Edit the values for all fields labeled as "<Value Required>" according to the comments and examples
    in the template.
    3. From the unzipped patchset installation area, start the installer by running the setup executable passing
    as the last argument the full path of the response file template you have edited locally with your own
    value of ORACLE_HOME and FROM_LOCATION:
    setup.exe -silent -responseFile <full_path_to_your_response_file>
    Post Install Actions
    Execute these "Post Install Actions" only if you have one or more databases associated to the upgraded $ORACLE_HOME.
    Important Notes
    1: Java VM and XML DB Requirements
    Users who have JVM (Java enabled) or JVM and XDB installed on their 9.2.0.1 databases should make sure that the init.ora parameters shared_pool_size and java_pool_size are each 150 MB or more before running the catpatch.sql upgrade script. Failure to do so could result in an unrecoverable memory failure during running of the script. Please note that JVM and XML DB was shipped as part of the default 9.2.0.1 seed database and will be present unless the user explicitly installed a 9.2.0.1 instance without them.
    2: SYSTEM table space
    If you have JServer installed in the database, you should check to be sure there is at least 10M of free space in the SYSTEM table space before running these actions.
    3: Installing on Cluster Databases
    If you are applying this patch set to a cluster database, then set the CLUSTER_DATABASE initialization parameter to false. After the post-install actions are completed, you must set this initialization parameter back to true.
    To complete the installation of this patch set, you need to start up each database associated with the upgraded $ORACLE_HOME, start the database listener (e.g., lsnrctl start), login using SQL*Plus (e.g., sqlplus "/ as sysdba"), and run the following commands/scripts in order from $ORACLE_HOME within a MIGRATE session. If you are using the OLAP option, make sure that the database listener is up.
    startup migrate
    spool patch.log
    @rdbms/admin/catpatch.sql
    spool off
    Review the patch.log file for errors and re-run the catpatch script after correcting any problems
    shutdown
    startup
    This step is optional - it will recompile all invalid PL/SQL packages now rather than when accessed for the first time - you can also use utlrcmp.sql to parallelize this in multiprocessor machines:
    @rdbms/admin/utlrp.sql
    Execute the following if you use Oracle OLAP option:
    alter user olapsys identified by <password> account unlock
    connect olapsys/<password>
    @cwmlite/admin/cwm2awmd.sql
    exit
    Execute the following script only if you have version 9.2.0.1.0 of Oracle Internet Directory installed in your ORACLE_HOME. Make sure that the database and database listener are running and that all parameters are specified prior to running the script:
    $ORACLE_HOME/bin/oidpatchca.bat
    -connect <Connect String>
    -lsnrport <Listener Port>
    -systempwd <SYSTEM Password>
    -odspwd <ODS Password>
    -sudn <Super-User DN>
    -supwd <Super-User Password>
    -dippwd <Password to register DIP Server>
    Where:
    connect - Database connect string
    lsnrport - Database Listener port
    systempwd - Password of the database 'SYSTEM' user
    odspwd - Password of the database 'ODS' user
    sudn - Super-user DN
    supwd - Super-user Password
    dippwd - New password to register Directory Integration Server. This password must conform to the password policy in the OID server
    Execute the following steps only is you are using the RMAN catalog.:
    rman catalog <user/passwd@alias>
    upgrade catalog;
    upgrade catalog;

    I don't understand which instructions I have to make for oracle upgrade?
    -- You have to follow all the instructions mentioned
    (Just check for few if's for Cluster enabled, OID and OLAP databases. Perform these steps only if they apply)
    Must I also make the 3. instruction? Connect to databse prior and drop?
    -- Yes you should do
    Must I also make the post install action for my database?
    (startup migrate ...)
    -- Yes. Do run catpatch.sql .
    what means at post install actions the following:
    'execute these post install actions only if you have one or more databases associated to the upgraded $oracle_homee.
    -- In this step make sure you do step 1
    1: Java VM and XML DB Requirements
    Otherwise catpatch.sql will fail.
    Do 2 and 3 only if applicable
    Chandar
    My database path is e:\oracle\oradata\database my oracle path is e:\oracle\ora92 have I in my case make the post install actions?

    What is the best way to migrate all the user accounts from instance said "A", and " B" that's using Oracle E-Busines, and 2 other instance said "C", "D" that's using older version of Oracle Internet Directory into the fresh Oracle Internet Directory (just install)? How do i filter the user account from the 4 instances above to make sure the account are not duplicate before import into fresh Oracle Internet Directory.

  • Questions on Metalink note 392673.1 (bug 5458753)

    I have a few questions on Metalink note 392673.1. This note states that if two schema have objects with similar names and these two schema issue identical statements, it is possible that the statement will run against the wrong schema's object if "a cursor gets reloaded in a certain manner".
    Does anyone know any more details? What manner of reloading? Will synonyms prevent the problem? Is there a test case?
    Also, the note states that it applies to versions 10.1.0.2 to 10.2.0.3, while the bug claims that it is fixed in 10.2.0.3. Is 10.2.0.3 affected or not?
    Paul Muller

    Hi,
    It seems that bug is solved in 10.2.0.3 patchset, and interim patch for 10.2.0.2.
    Anyway, if you have any question on metalink note, you might have more chance to get a valid answer by asking it into metalink forum, or send an email to the author of the note.

    Hello Guys,
    IS ORACLE 10g enterprise edition is same oracle identity management because I am bit confused what is going on when we logged an SR we have been told to use oracle 10g AS (10.1.3.5) but in the note its always says oracle 10g AS 10.1.4.X. which is in turn an Identity management so we need install oracle 10gAS (10.1.3.5) then on top of that we install oracle identity management which comprises of OSSO and OID . is it correct ??
    in reference note 376811.1
    please advise
    thanks
    MN

    Hello Hussien,
    Anyways I upgraded to 10.1.3.5 patch_set 10gAs on ebiz r12.0.6
    I have other question regarding the doc ID 376811.1
    in there is section
    Pre-Install Task 4: Apply the latest certified Application Server Patchset
    Oracle E-Business Suite Release 12 is certified with the Application Server Patch Sets listed in the table below:
    Certified AS Patchset Download Location One-off Patch details (if any)
    Oracle Identity Management 10g Release 3 Patch Set 1 (10.1.4.2) 5983637 8811442
    Oracle Identity Management 10g Release 3 Patch Set 2 (10.1.4.3) 7215628 8811442
    Oracle Application Server and Oracle Developer Suite 10g Release 2 (10.1.2) Patch Set 2 (10.1.2.2.0) 4960210
    Oracle Application Server and Oracle Developer Suite 10g Release 2 (10.1.2) Patch Set 3 (10.1.2.3.0)
    5983622
    Follow the installation instructions provided in the patch README to install the patch on your Identity Management Server and to check supported operating systems.
    Oracle always recommends latest certified AS patchset for E-Business Suite customer
    I installed oracle 10gas 10.1.4.0.1 its up and running so do i need to just apply the patchset oracle Identity management 10gR3 patcheset (10.1.4.3)
    or  I have to apply  both 10.1.4.3 and the oracle Application server 10g release 2 (10.1.2)patch set 3(10.1.2.3.0) ???
    because in enterprise manager application server control it says version 10.1.2.0.2 and identity management components show 10.1.4.0.1 .
    thanks in advance.

  • R12.1.1 / 11.1.0.7 upgrade : Error with 10.1.3.4 patchset upgrade

    All,
    We are on 12.0.2 / 10.2.0.2 (non-rac) in a split-tier architecture. Web/Forms on the Linux node and Concurrent Managers/Database on the Solaris node. We are now on a project to upgrade this environment to 12.1.1 on 11.1.0.7 db. (Non RAC,Non ASM)
    Here are the high level tasks that i laid down
    -- Create a project instance (clone from Prod)
    -- Upgrade db to 10.2.0.4 from 10.2.0.2
    -- Upgrade the techstack Oracle Homes (10.1.2 and 10.1.3)
    -- Upgrade the JDK to 1.6.0_X
    -- Upgrade 12.0.2 to R12.1.1
    -- Upgrade the database to 11.1.0.7
    PS: Direct ugprade from 10.2.0.2 to 11.1.0.7 needs us to be on R12 RUP4. So, i decided to do 10g upgrade as an intermediate step. We are following 752619.1 and all the notes that it refers.
    We are hitting an issue upgrading the 10.1.3 Oracle home on the Solaris node. The same upgrade completed fine on the Linux node. Here is the description of the issue.
    The runInstaller for 10.1.3.4 patchset expects OPMN to be running for a successful patchset installation. On a node with just batch processing enabled, OPMN does not run by default. The installer tries to start OPMN and errors out saying

    OPMN is failing to start. OPMN must be started in order to correctly install and configure the patchset. Please start OPMN ma

    This is when the installer is at 83%
    We tried to start OPMN and managed processes manually using adopmnctl.sh
    OPMN starts and is able to start the HTTP server too but not any of the OC4J container components (oacore,forms and oafm). Here are the errors

    I saw some notes and tried updating the config xml files and removed the references to oracle.ws.jaxrpc but to no help.
    Installer log has the below error when we attempt the "retry" operation in installation screens.

    Any help on the above issue? We are never going to use OPMN on this node but stuck here currently !!
    Deviating a little bit, if we have to consider moving the concurrent managers out of database node to the
    web/forms node (just to avoid having to maintain 2 appl_tops and getting away with doing the above tasks 2 times)
    , what are the various things to consider?
    -- Network latency
    -- R12 being Unified APPL_TOP, can we just try to bring up ICM on Web/Forms node? (just enable the service)
    -- We are aware that we might have to move the custom top and test custom programs (especially host programs).
    Is there any other considerations when moving Concurrent managers from a Solaris node(64 bit) to Linux node (32 bit) ?
    One last question: Why are these adoacore/adoafm scripts taking a long time?
    Any feedback is highly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Arun

  • Upgrade AS 9.0.4 questions

    Hi !!
    I am trying to gather information for planning an upgrade of our AS and Portal environment.
    We are are version 9.0.4.1 and my predecessors had a tentative plan to upgrade our AS to version 10.1.2.0.2 and Portal to version 10.1.4. Both our Metadata Repository and Customer databases are on version 9.2.0.7. We use Forms and Discoverer viewer as well with our current Portal setup.
    I am new to AS and am still in the learning phase. I am getting a confused/overwhelmed by the documentation I am going through regarding AS upgrades, and would like to get some help from experienced folks if possible.
    Here are my questions:
    1. What is the best AS version we can upgrade to from 9.0.4 (preferably not the latest)?
    Would it require a database upgrade? If so what version?
    2. What version of Portal should we upgrade to? What are the differences between 10.1.2.0.2 and 10.1.4 or later versions?
    3. What would be the ideal Discoverer version with the upgraded version of AS? and Why?
    Is it possible to just do the Discoverer upgrade staying with our 9.0.4 AS configuration?
    If we can upgrade Discoverer only, would that cause any problems with our AS upgrade later on?
    Any information you can provide would be helpful.
    Thanks.

    Hi AMN,
    Thanks for your detailed response with your comments and suggestions. They were very helpful.
    I went through the threads you referred to, and have been going through a lot of documentation regarding the upgrades.
    As you said in your response, we have come to a conclusion that AS 10.1.2.0.2 is a suitable patch to upgrade to, and version 10.1.4 for Portal.
    But I still am confused about a few things with respect to the 10gR2 AS upgrade from our 9.0.4.1 version.
    More than anything, I have not been able to figure out if we have to upgrade our 9.2.0.7 Metadata Repository and Customer (on a different server) Databases to 10g.
    We have plans to patch them to the terminal 9i version of 9.2.0.8.
    If you don't mind, can you clear a few of my dilemmas and answer a few questions? I am going to quote a few things from some documents I have been reading before I put forward my questions.
    Confusion regarding the minimum database version supported, to be at Oracle AS 10g Release 2 (Patch set 2 or 3):
    The Release Notes for 10g Release 2 (10.1.2) Patch Set 2 (10.1.2.2.0) for AIX 5L Based Systems (64-Bit), under Section "2.1 Supported Database Versions" states the following:
    "{color:#0000ff}If your database version is 9.2.0.7 or 10.2, then the Oracle Database 10.1.0.5 database patch is not required. Also, the Metadata update for upgrading the Metadata Repository should be run from the middle tier.{color}"
    The Release Notes for 10g Release 2 (10.1.2) Patch Set 3 (10.1.2.3.0) for AIX 5L Based Systems (64-Bit), under Section "2.3 Database Patch Set" states the following:
    "{color:#0000ff}If your database release is 9.2.0.8 or 10.2, then the Oracle Database 10g Release 1 (10.1.0.5) database patch is not required. The Metadata Repository Update for upgrading the Metadata Repository should be run from the middle tier.{color}"
    But as per Table 1, and Table 2 in DocID: 329361.1 (Oracle Application Server 10g Release 2 (10.1.2) Support Status and Alerts), it looks like the d
    Questions:+
    +1. Is it a requirement to upgrade our existing 9i Metadata Repository and Customer databases to 10g for upgrading our AS to version 10.1.2.2.0 or 10.1.2.3.0, and Portal to version 10.1.4.1 or 10.1.4.2?+
    +2. If so, is it true for upgrading to AS version 10.1.2.0.2 and Portal to version 10.1.4.0?+
    In the documentation that I have gone through so far for the AS upgrade to 10gR2, I have seen notes similar to the examples below from DocID: 415222.1:
    "{color:#0000ff}Patch 4505133 (10.1.0.5.0 Patchset) should be applied to all Oracle Application Server 10.1.2.0.2 homes.{color}"
    "{color:#0000ff}It is now strongly recommended that these homes be updated with Oracle Application Server 10.1.2.2 Patchset, where the 10.1.0.5.0 update is automatically applied to non-database homes.{color}"
    We have separate Oracle Homes for Infrastructure, MidTier, Metadata Repository Database, and Customer Database (this is on a different server).
    Questions:+
    +1. Does the statements above mean that our 9i Oracle Homes for Infrastructure and MidTier are going to be patched automatically to 10.1.0.5.0 when we upgrade to 10.1.2.0.2?+
    Confusion regarding the Portal version after the upgrade:
    As per Table 3 in DocID: 329361.1 [http://Oracle Application Server 10g Release 2 (10.1.2) Support Status and Alerts|http://oracle%20application%20server%2010g%20release%202%20%2810.1.2%29%20support%20status%20and%20alerts/],
    "{color:#0000ff}Upgrading to Portal 10.1.4 is currently optional, but once on Portal 10.1.4.0, it is _mandatory to upgrade to Portal 10.1.4.1 or 10.1.4.2_, depending on availability.{color}"
    Questions:*
    +1. Does this mean that after upgrading our AS to version 10.1.2.0.2, we have the following options?:+
    +(a) Keep our Portal at version 10.1.2 and upgrade to version 10.1.4, or+
    +(b) Upgrade Portal to version 10.1.4, in which case, upgrade AS to version 10.1.2.2.0 or 10.1.2.3.0 since it is mandatory.+
    A few more doubts:
    As per Table 35 in DocID: 753340.1 [CPUJAN2009 Availability Information
    for Oracle Database and Fusion Middleware Products], the terminal CPU
    for AS version 10.1.2.0.2 is CPUAPR2008.
    Does this mean that CPUAPR2008 is included in the 10.1.2.2 and 10.1.2.3 patch sets?
    Down the line in the future, depending on what 10gR2 AS Patchset we
    upgrade to now, are there any limitations/issues for a possible AS 11g
    Upgrade when it becomes available?
    Could you also please define/elaborate the term "non-database home" that I saw many times in the Patchset release notes? I think that it refers to the Infrastructure and MidTier Oracle Homes. Is that correct?
    Sorry for throwing such a lot of stuff at you. But I think that your experience can help me a lot.
    Thanks again for all your help. Let me know if you need any more information regarding our environment here.
