Path between Imovie HD and IDVD

When I press the "create IDVD project" in IMOVIE HD and expect my movie to be exported to IDVD I get nothing.
Can any one tell me how to see if the path between the two programs is gone? I am using MAC Leopard 10.5.8,
Imovie 5.0.2, IDVD 7.0.4. I have used IDVD in the past but this movie is too large and I needed to break it up.
I also, saved the file in the movies folder and then used the drag and drop into IDVD but what to with it, way too large for disc.
I still need to know why I cannot use the documented procedure. Any ideas?

iMovie is a video edit app, meant to work with firewire connected miniDV camcorders.
iDVD is an encoding, authoring and burning app to create videoDVD
both apps are part of the iLife suite (plus iTunes, for music, iPhoto for photo, iWeb for website creation…), and are meant to work all together with a single click…
all apps can do other tricks (e.g. importing content of non-copy protected videoDVDs, editing mpegs etc), but as said, they are not meant for/other apps are better to accomplish that.
"ripping" DVDs is in my understanding to copy content from protected/commercial videoDVDs… that IS possible with a Mac, a few apps are on the market, the Rules of Common Behavior in this forum don't "allow" linking to such apps, because in most areas on this planet ownership, usage, even mentioning (! here in Germany…) such apps is illegal.
ripping is NOT supported by iDVD
to copy DVD can be done with every Mac included Disk Utility, to copy just parts you need 3rd party software. (a videoDVD is not meant for editing, it uses a delivery format… socalled "mpeg editing" is better supported on Windows… doesn't fullfill the high quality standards of Apple… )

Loss of quality between iMovie '09 and iDVD

Hi all,
I'd like to have some advises to understand if what I'm doing is the right way to do or if there is a better/different solution.
I'm working in a photo shop (not ADOBE Photoshop ... ;-)) and sometimes we are doing some "movies" from photos. I'm currently using some embedded iMovie features such as Key Burns, etc.
Once I created my "movie", I'm exporting it using the Browser Media HD option (1280x720, H.264, 25fps, 10Mbps)
Now I have the problem to put it on a DVD. I started to use iDVD but the end quality on DVD is much lower than expected, absolutely nothing to do with High Definition
Do you know if using the HD feature in Toast 10 Pro the DVD quality will improve ?

What I've learned: iMovie 09 is best used for video intended for computer viewing. iMovie HD (06) to iDVD 09 is best for burning to DVD. If you've already created your movie in 09, I'm afraid there's not much you can do about improving the quality but some searches might reveal something I missed.

You were misinformed. iCloud requires 10.7.2 or later. Snow Leopard is required to upgrade to either Lion or Mountain Lion. See the following for the upgrade path and information to determine if your computer can be upgraded.

Lost iMovie, iPhoto and iDVD when hard drive crashed.

I owned my iMac since 2007 and my first OS was 10.4. As far back then, my iMac came with iMovie, iPhoto and iDVD already installed. Since 2011, I had OS 10.6 on my iMac. Two weekends ago, my hard drive crashed and lost many applications, including iMovie, iPhoto and iDVD. I still had a copy of 10.6 on a disc and reinstalled it and even updated it to the version I had before my HD crashed. I notice that iMovie, iPhoto and iDVD are not in my computer anymore.
I visited the download section on the Apple website and have found versions of iMovie, iPhoto and iDVD that would be compatable with OS 10.6.8, but for some reason I can't install them. I was able to install iPhoto, but can't open it. I can't even install iDVD. I haven't tried to install iMovie.
Is there any way I can install these applications I lost? I realize purchasing a new copy of iLife is one option, but the version that is out now is not compatable with OS 10.6.8.

These are not applications. They are updaters for the applications.
You will have got a disk with your Mac that had the applications on it. You can reinstall from that.

Yes, you can use them. As I recall the only concern is that they may not work in DVD players manufactured before 2002.

The improvements provided by iDVD 7 over version 6 are not confined to themes.
Happily having two version of iMovie is easily achieved, but it has to be done backwards.
Delete iMovie 11 (just drag it to the trash). Now install iMovie 6 from the iLife 6 install disks. Update it to iMovie 6.0.3.
Now re-install iMovie 11. This automatically moves iMovie 6 into a folder it creates in your Applications folder called iMovie Previous Version.
Then reinstall iMovie 11.
iMovie 6 works great with iDVD 7.
Now you have them both, and you can have both in the Dock as well.

Anyone using 10.5.7 with iMovie 06 and iDVD 08/09

I have iLife 09 and use iMovie 06 (naturally) with iDVD 09 (same as iDVD 08).
Before I get 10.5.7 I was hoping to hear from someone that is using this combination.
Presently, I am having no difficulties with 10.5.6, iMovie 06 and iDVD 09.

You can have both versions of iMovie on the same computer at the same time, but iDVD6 will be replaced by iDVD8/9 (both are the same versions). You cannot have both versions of other iLife apps, only iMovie.
If your new MBP came with iLife 09 installed, you should have been able to install iMovie 6 and have it reside peacefully with iMovie 09. However, I think I recall reading here that you may have to reinstall iM9. Reinstalling it should have put the iMovie 6 app in a folder called 'iMovie Previous version' Once you have the iLife 09 apps reinstalled, you can pull the iM6 app out of that previous-version folder and put in directly into your Applications folder.
iMovie 6 works completely with iDVD 8/9. After you get iMovie 6 back, create a simple test movie with some short DV clips and then open iDVD 8/9, create a new project and try dragging in your iMovie. See how it works.

Using 10.5.7 with iMovie 06 and iDVD 09

I have iLife 09 and use iMovie 06 (for better quality) with iDVD 09 (same as iDVD 08).
Before I get 10.5.7 I was hoping to hear from someone that is using this combination.
Presently, I am having no difficulties with 10.5.6, iMovie 06 and iDVD 09.

Just getting started with trying to learn how to edit a video. Also, is '11 short for 2011? In other words, if I referred to "iMovie 2011" would I be talking about something that actually exists? I guess HD means High Definition. What do you call something that is NOT HD? Low def? Regular Def? The introduction to "iMovie HD"manual refers to "Magic iMovie" Does the word Magic have special meaning, the way it does in reference to a mouse (mighty or magic being different)? The   manual keeps referring to "the latest" but the copyright date at the back is 2005. This makes me wonder if there is a more recent version of this manual. Is there a place on the apple website to check on what the latest version is? What is the Product I am asking abouit? I don't think it is iMac, iPhone, iS 5 or None. But those are the only choices I see below here. Why is there not a choice of "iMovie"? Or iLife?

A Project is a movie you are making. You can use the clips from one or more events in a project. You can also use photos from iPhoto or Aperture or the Finder, and you can use Music from iTunes. When you "finish" a project, you use the SHARE menu to execute all your edits and create a file that can be played where you want it, in the size you want it. Even after you Share a project, you can go back and edit it some more if you like, but then you would need to Share it again.
   Or is it a "project" while you create it and then it becomes a "movie:" after you finish it?
A movie is the result of your Sharing the project as I mentioned above.
This is something the Apple manual writers assume everyone already knows but I do not. What is a Cache and how it is different from a Library?
You shouldn't really need to understand caches and libraries to use iMovie. The Library is a section of your hard drive that you don't generally need to go to. It holds a bunch of files that are used by the system.
A cache is a temporary place to hold something that you might need right away. For example, Let's say you are editing the first five seconds of a clip. It takes time to go out and get the clip off the disk drive and bring it into memory so you can edit it. A cache might be used, say, to save some time by going ahead and bringing in the whole clip (not just the first 5 seconds) and maybe the next clip too. Another example. You want a glass of milk. So do you go to the store and buy a glass of milk? No. You buy a gallon of milk and put it in the refrigerator. You drink your glass of milk. When you want another glass, you go to the cache (the refrigerator) not the store. The iMovie App handles all this behind the scenes so you don't have to worry about it.
Clip seems on the surface obvious (a short section of continous video/audio that is a building block for a movie) but as I think about it, I wonder.....It is BOTH audio and video? or EITHER? If a movie contained only one clip wouold it be called a clip or a movie?
The best way to understand clips is that it is a unit of video from the time you press record on your camera until the time you press stop. Ususally a clip is from 5 seconds to 20 seconds, but if you are recording a convert, a single clip might be two hours.   A clip is imported into an Event. A clip, or a portion of a clip, can be used in a project. It becomes a movie when you share the project. Could you take one clip and make a project from it with no editing? Sure.
Usually a camcorder will record both audio and video. You can, however, use only the audio or only the video in a project if you want.
If the audio and the video were from different sources would it still be a clip?
No, it would be two clips. You can edit them together. If you want to sync multiple video angles (from different cameras) and different sound sources (like really good microphones, separate from the camera) then Final Cut Pro X is your best bet. But for simple needs, you can combine audio clips and video clips in iMovie.
   What are scenes? What are sections?
A scene is usually a unit within your movie. It is up to you to define that. For example, if I was makeing a movie about my daughter's marathon, I might put a scene together about the pre-race preparations, a scene about the starting line, a scene about the midpoint, and a scen at the finish line. Each scene could have many clips. A scene is really where you use your creativity. I am not sure how you are using the word Section.
What are effects?
An effect could be changing the color balance, adding a sound effect, adding slow motion or fast motion, adding an old-timey or black and white look, adding a freeze frame, there are a lot. You dont have to use them at all. It depends on the story you are trying to tell.
How many different types of panes exist? (So far, I see audio, titles, photos, transitions, effects, and iDVD) What is the difference between iDVD and DVD?
A DVD is a round disk that you put in a DVD player. You can create a DVD if you have DVD authoring software and a DVD burner. Five years ago, all Macs had DVD burners. Now, MacBook Airs, some iMacs, and some Mac Books no longer have built-in burners, but you can always add a DVD burner through a USB port. More and more people are shooting HD video - and DVDs are only standard definition. And more and more people are sharing the video through YouTube and Facebook, which support HD. So Apple has been deemphasizing DVD lately. They have not updated iDVD since 2006. Still, if you make movies for friends and family who are not comfortable with the internet, DVDs are still quite useful.
What is video exactly and how is video different from a movie? Does video include audio by definition? Or are there different terms to refer to video with and without audio?

Disapointed in iMovie 11 and iDVD

I have done a lot of home movie work in the past on Windows with Sony Vegas - capture from MiniDV camera, edit, burn DVD and been very pleased with the results.
I am just switching to Mac, and expected the results to be at least as good as they were before. After making my first disk, I am not impressed at all - and I'm not sure where the problem occurred.
My first project might have been doomed from the beginning - because of a mixture of video types I was working with.
I had several clips that were recorded on MiniDV, captured via firewire as DV-AVI into Windows, then these files were copied to the Mac (I had been saving the video until I got my new Mac since I wanted to edit on it) - there were several other clips that were recorded on an iPhone 4, then imported directly into the Mac with iMovie.
I did not try to mix the HD video from the iPhone with the SD video from the MiniDV camera into the same video - but I did try to put them both on the same DVD as separate clips)
Make each video event as a separate video - then close iMovie, open iDVD, and pull the completed clips in - I didn't "export to iDVD" or whatever the term is.
The DVDs I used to make on the Windows box look NOTICEABLY better than the DVD that came out of the Mac. Is the weak link in iMovie, iDVD, or somewhere else? Is the problem that I tried to mix HD and non HD onto the same DVD?

I wont try to tell you what the real difference is between the sharing, cause I (really) dont know, but I can tell you how the programs handle it differently.When you share directly to iDVD, it does it (makes the DVD from the iMovei project) in one step. I suspect the movie version it makes (renders) to compress from the iMovie project just isnt as good as when you share to media browser first, Sharing to media browser makes a movie that resides in the project's file (you have to right click the specific iMovie project to see it, then "show package content" where it will be in a folder called "movies". When you "Share to media browser" it makes a version of the size you specify based on your needs, iPod (small) or larger, say for a DVD, or if you upload a movie to your iDisk or YOuTube, again iMovie has to make these movies first, they are all in this folder within the project, (iDVD does not leave a rendered movie in that folder). Anyway, you share to Media Browser and pick the highest level you can, and make sure you pick the highest iDVD quality in the preferences of iDVD ("Professional"; i think they call it), and you get a decent DVD (Assuming your movie clips were high quality to start with) remember that DVD IS compression, so you dont want to lose more than you have to in the compression) , DVD is standard definition and so you will lose HD in that process too.
But I compared this "share to"work flow MANY times in the past and the quality of share to iDVD was pretty bad and the other way was pretty good, CLEARLY different, tested several times (This was pre iLife 11, but was with iLife 09, i doubt it got "Fixed") . So it you dont like what Share to iDVD looks like, try the other way. Let me know. dont want to give bad info here. I should do the trial again for the umteenth time, but I did it maybe 6 times before and it was obviously different, intolerable with one way, fine with the other.
THe odd thing to me is that, assuming I am right (and i was 100%, 6 months ago) WHy Apple got it wrong. If you remember the whole idea of iMAcs and "i" anything (Imac was the first, then i apps and iPods iTV, pad...) was "for the rest of us", easy , default presets were always perfect, no work arounds, and it is a MEDIA company; Make it easy and automatic to make the best DVD you can give us! Bizarre.
I have been sharing to my iDisk and more to YouTube lately, and that stuff looks pretty darn good, but a lot of that has to do with the fact that you are generally watching them on a small screen.

In the end this is what i want to do, share stuff of my family, and keep the original source files for whatever my needs are, burn an occasional DVD. I'm a regular guy, my camera is a consumer model HD camera, I spend too much time on my computer, gotta keep it simple and fast, and dont get carried away. The whole Blue Ray discussions make my head spin even more, do you import at Full or Large (I think those are the 2 options Full is Full HD, file 3 times as large) realzing that you really cannot easily burn a Blue ray (HD) version anyway, or if you do using other software like Toast, are limited to 20 minutes. I tried both using HD source clips and couldnt tell the difference, wasnt worth the 3X extra HD space the event clips took up, and they will fill up your HD fast)] as it is I have all my childhood and my kids childhood source clips on an external 1 TB HD...]
The limit of Youtube I think is 10 minutes, for years I have made sports highlight movie montanges of entire kids season that last 30-50 minutes (Yikes) , and I dont think YouTube will accept those, but my iDisk will and I can send friends (trying not to alienate them) the link for that to watch.
But the point is that in the old days you would burn a DVD (that by definition, no pun intended) lost definition from compression. But most things you make a DVD for to share, nobody looks at more than once or twice anyway. SO upload it , let people watch, AND back up back up back up your iMovie events and projects and iPhoto and iTunes so that your project will always be there and maybe even KEEP THAT final product HIGH QUALITY MOVIE THAT MEDIA BROWSER MADE somewhere else as a computer file. That is like storing it as a DVD, just as a pre-compressed better quality.
Sorry, to opine endlessly, rereading your original post you know what you are doing, but try the other workflow, it it isnt a better DVD I'll retry it in iLife 11 too. blank DVDs are cheap, it just takes time to make and burn them.
I read in a recent post from Appleman (the man) on this and he made an excellent analogy , some people spend $10,000 for a audio speaker and have amps with tubes and solid state electronics and $5000 turntables and vinyl (I am adding to his statement a bit a bit) and others just listen on $150 iPods with highly compressed versions of the songs, and are 100% happy. He is so right. We are not MGM studios. We are looking at memories to enrich our lives. Check this one out, super 8 tape from the early 60s, converted to digital files by a company we sent away to (we have hours of this stuff), and the source is awful, dark, grainy, silent (I added the sound as a side effect), it looks awful, but to see this rebirths me, the quality is irrelevant.

Finally I do have FCP, but I really dont want to go there to learn it and use it for possible improved quality, iMOvie is so easy to make real slick projects. I waste enough time, I'd be divorced if I started FCP. Again it gets back to just how important is it to look perfect as opposed to Real good, for personal stuff.
This iMovie 6 v 11 (read other threads in the last week of this forum, egads) argument is tiresome to me, lots written these days. I believe what they say that earleir version of imovie import a better version from your camera, but iMovie 6 has almost none of the slick things you can do with iMovie 11. I was even going to experiment as i still all the old iMovie versions, but iMovie 6 wont import from my camera, kinda funny really.

3.1 library not compatible with iMovie '09 and iDVD 7.0.4 ???

I took the Aperture upgrade last night to 3.1 and Aperture itself appears to be running ok, although I haven't tested a ton of the functionality yet. What I was working on was wrapping up a wedding I shot and am putting the final touches on the movies and DVD for my clients.
However, since the upgrade neither iMovie '09 nor iDVD 7.0.4 can access my Aperture library. They seem to think they can see it, but all that happens in the wheel sits and spins. I though maybe this was due tot he current size of my Aperture library (170 gig, about 40k images) but after letting iMovie sit and spin for about 6 hours I don't think that is the problem.
Looks like there is a compatibility bug here.

To Tony: This is a known bug in Aperture 3.1 as earlier posts show. I do have the same bug. I went into few steps for solving it, but didn't find a working way. What I did:
I created a new empty library and imported few photos. This library works, iLife shows the library contents in iPhoto, iMovie and so on.
I exported few projects from my main library and created from them a new library. This library is about 30 GB and it works too.
I exported then my whole library to a new library. This tooks me over 6 hours because the library was around 300 GB with 25k photos. This library still does not show in iLife media browser.
I did a repair permissions and check database consistency on this library too. No change.
As the smaller library with only 30 GB in size does function as expected, it seems it has to do with the larger size of the second or main library or there is something wrong in there.

Inferior quality of slideshow in iMovie 08 and iDVD 08

I created two separate slideshows in iMovie 08 and then, I imported them both to an iDVD 08 project as two different chapters. After burning the disk (once in iDVD and once in Toast 8 Ti, I see three problems in both versions.
First, the opening text that plays automatically when the disk is inserted into the player is hopelessly unsharp. I created that text in Photoshop and saved it as JPEG.
Secondly, all images are way too light on my flat-screen TV (in comparison to my calibrated Cinema HD monitor).
Finally, in my first chapter - and only in the first chapter - I see "rogue" pixels missing and/or flying around on the screen and sound that is randomly broken and sometimes missing for several seconds.
I started thinking that something might be wrong with my SuperDrive, but when I play back either one of those two versions of disks on my Mac (G5), there's absolutely nothing wrong. Both image and sound are flawless. That also precludes the possibility of a faulty blank DVD disks, faulty coding or inappropriate speed of recording... Doesn't it?
I would appreciate any suggestions that would help me get rid of those problems.

I can't say that I've ever tried using an export from keynote as the source video for an imovie project and in this respect you have given me useful information in regard to the fact that keynote exports can be imported into imovie.
Without having too much knowledge in this area, may I suggest that you try to preserve the format of your keynote export in your workflow throughout imovie.
If you are not too sure about what this involves, open your keynote export in quicktime, open the inspector window and tell us what format your .mov is in and we will do our best to suggest a workflow in imovie for you.

Caught between Imovie 09 and FCE

I am caught in between these two programs.
I am a beginner and only need the basic editing tools available in Imovie, yet I have an AVHD camcorder and want to import footage at maximum resolution. I have been importing at full resolution and exporting to Quicktime. There is a significant reduction in quality in the final movie (even when played back on the computer).
Does anyone know if '09 will be updated any time soon to allow for full HD editing?
Are there are editing programs for mac that are simple to use but allow for lossless editing?
Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

So here we are, more than half way through '10 and we're still stuck not having a lossless means for editing without mortgaging the house?
I've got iMovie '06 and I've been trying to use it on Snow Leopard (10.6.4) and I'm getting crashes which detract from my happy life.
Do we have any indications that Apple might be fixing this in the near future?
I've got video of my daughter's HS graduation that is PRECIOUS and I don't want to be dropping bits left and right.

Imovie 4 and IDVD 6 it's killing me

I record my video in Imovie 4 and I used to use iDVD 4 and it all worked. Then I upgraded to Tiger and that killed iDVD 4. (I was told that it was uncompatable) So I upgraded my iDVD to 6. My computer is old and would not take imovie 6.
Everything works well on iDVD6 until the encoding hits the audio and it just freezes.
I import the imovie to iDVD and do all the stuff that is recommended.
I have heard that there may be some compatibility issues with im 4 and dvd 6. Any thoughts or advice.
Don't tell me that I don't have enough hard drive room because I do. I also repair the permissions.
If you tell me that they are not compatable, then what do I do? I can't upgrade because I have a slower computer, and I can't go back to Panther, (or can I) I am kind of screwed.

Things that gives extream long processing times
• G4 CPU - (G4 600MHz - one hour movie >> 12 hours encoding time)
• low amount of free space on internal boot hard disk
NEVER under 25Gb free space on mine.
less than 5Gb and times get redicolous PLUS RESULTING DVD MOST probably useless
free space on other external hard disks - not interesting due to that Mac OS and iDVD
only can address the start-up one for it's scratch and temp files.

Quality difference between Imovie 05 and 08.

Ihave a ordinary Sony handycam DV camera(DCR-HC39E).I have made some films with Imovie 05 and they were ok, but not as good as plugging directly from the camcorder in to the mac or a TV. Why so, isn´t digital digital. I bought the Ilife 08 hoping that the quality was better, but when i made the same film with 08 it was much more "blurry" than 05. I was realy dissapointed. Do I do something wrong or should I downgrade ?

iMovie'08 is something else than iMovie 1 to 6 and should have been named properly.
If You got iLife'08 then You are entitled to download iMovie HD 6 (6.0.4) which
is Great.

If You copy/export Your movie back to Camera and a new miniDV tape You'll get
a quality which I can't differ from original.
DVDs - are hard compacted eg 25Gb down to 4.2Gb => There is a loss and depending
on how this encoding is done this quality vary from worse to better.
I use Verbatim DVDs
I use DVD-R disks
I burn at x1 speed (can be set in iDVD08)
I use Pro-encoding in iDVD08
I sequre at least 25Gb free space on internal hard disk (important)
This gives me a result I can stand for.
