Path/Join

I am getting an error message while trying to use the Path/Join function in Ai CC6.  While working on a new layer I try to Path/Join the vectorized image and the mesaage states that "The selected objects cannot be joined as they are invalid objects."  What am I doing wrong?

Jacob I am sorry but the system will not allow me to send you a screenshot.  It says the image is to large.  In short what I have is a vectorized JPG file, 2 colors.  I want to add a contour/cut line around the image so that I can print the logo, cut it, and transfer it to a shirt.  I created a new layer which in turn is where you select the image and then select Path/Join. This is where the error message appears.  I don't know how better to explain it.  Am I missing a step in the vectorizing process.  The image is clean, I changed the colors, I grouped.......I don't know what else to do......

  • Joining array variable to create a path

    Hi,
I would like merging 3 variables and using it to copy a file. What am I missing?
set-variable -name ModuleVariables -visibility public -Scope Script -Value @("\Trousse\Modules","Variables.psm1")
set-variable -name $PCompletTrousse -visibility public -Scope Script -Value "C:\Temp\ShockwavePlayer10_Frv1"
set-variable -name ScriptDir -visibility public -Scope Script -Value "C:\Temp\Logiciels\Scripts Powershell\_!NTrousses1.0_Frv1"
    Copy-Item "$ScriptDir+$ModuleVariables[0]+$ModuleVariables[1]" -Destination $PCompletTrousse
    Thanks,
    François

    Hi,
I just found this would work too:
    Copy-Item (Join-Path -path (Join-Path $ScriptDir -ChildPath $ModuleVariables[0]) -childpath $ModuleVariables1])  -Destination $PCompletTrousse
Not sure to understand the difference between your solution and mine. Which one is better?
    Thanks,
    François
Both make calls out to another function or cmdlet.  The issue is that the '+' to combine strings must exist outside the strings to combine. For example:
    $a = "adam"
    $b = "bob"
    $c = "$a+$b"
    # $c now has a value of "adam+bob"
    $d = $a + $b
    # $d now had a value of "adambob"
Combining the strings outside of a function call or cmdlet would probably be a little faster, but negligible depending on the number of times you do it.

  • Joining a Path

I am having problems trying to join some objects. I have a smaller circle in a larger circle. and an arrow (just two lines) pointing right. I would like to join these objects, so that each end of the arrow will join to each the circles and make it one object.
The effect Im looking for is that the center circle is gone/transparent, and I can fill inbetween the two circles with a color (with the arrow head included). Ive included the file (or an image, whichever it takes incase my description is confusing.

Select and copy the arrowhead to the clipboard.
Select the two circles and make a compound path (Ctrl + 8)
With the Smart Guides on (Ctrl + U), showing you the center line of the circle, draw a straight line with the Pen tool starting below the circles, going inside, and connecting the arrowhead line as shown in the first image below.
With that line only selected, go to Object > Path > Divide Objects Below
Paste the arrowhead from the clipboard in front (Ctrl + F) and Shift click on the path of the left object to add it to the selection, and in the Pathfinder panel click the Unite button.
With the direct selection or lasso tool drag over the horizontal line at the bottom of the circle as shown in the image and press Delete on the keyboard.
Select All, and Object > Path > Join (Ctrl + J)

  • Joining paths

I am trying to join two different shapes by choosing object >path>join though I receive a message indicating it will not work because they are invalid objects. I tried this with simple shapes such as the star and rectangle. What types of shapes are valid to use the join command?
    Thanks.

Open pats can be joined, try the pathfinder tool if you want to cpombine shapes.
use the help menu about the pathfinder and also live paint groups.
There are tutorials on Adobe TV as well and various other sights.
a star and a rectangle in the pathfinder use the top most left icon, Unite.

  • Problem Joining Two Paths!

Okay so I have Illustrator cs3 and so lets say I want to join 2 paths on a text thing so 2 letters could be joined together and then have the stroke applied to the combined letter, not the separate 2 letters.
I have made some diagrams to explain my situation since it is hard to explain.
(note that the images on top and bottom are the same but I duplicated the top so the bottom is selected just so you can see)
#1: I make the text, I go to object> expand and click okay, then I add a double stroke. Now see how the g is overlapping the n which is overlapping the i which is overlapping the t etc. I want to join the top of the letter s to the letter top left bar of the letter t for design purposes.
    http://qualitylogos.net/diagram/diagram%201.jpg
#2: I go into outline mode so it is easier to see and work in. Then I moved the points of the s and t together and deleted the 2 vertical bars that were previously there using the scissor tool, now the joints (on the top and bottom) are directly on top of each other.
    http://qualitylogos.net/diagram/diagram%202.jpg
#3: So I use the direct selection tool and highlight both points so i can join them and make one combined letter and I go to object>path>join and I get this error, how do I work this out and fix this because its really frustrating coming from photoshop where it is really easy to do.
    http://qualitylogos.net/diagram/diagram%203.jpg
Here is the .ai file for illustrator cs3 if you need it:
    http://qualitylogos.net/diagram/diagram.ai
I hope these files helped you and thanks for checking my thread out, I hope I can get this solved soon :)

    > I want to join 2 paths on a text thing so 2 letters could be joined together and then have the stroke applied to the combined letter, not the separate 2 letters.
You want to create a ligature: Two characters merged into one glyph.

Illustrator's Join command is completely lame. It requires you to select endpoints; it can't join more than two paths at a time; and it can't join paths in different groups. (This latter is what is causing the alert you are seeing.)
But you are going at this in too difficult a manner. For what you are trying to do, all that tedious cutting and joining is not necessary.
Set the text. Convert it to paths (Text>Create Outlines). The result is a Group. Apply the Add Pathfinder (and expand if in CS3), or use the Merge Pathfinder. That will union the overlapping characters.
There are also ways to do this with the text remaining live. Essentially, you apply the outlines at the TextFrame, Group or Layer level, instead of at the individual path level. Example:
    1. Set the text.
    2. Black pointer: select the text object (not a text range of characters).
    3. Appearance Palette flyout: Add New Stroke. Drag the stroke to below the Characters listing.
    4. Repeat step 3 for additional strokes.
If you then want everything to flattened to paths, use Expand Appearance, followed by the Add and/or Merge Pathfinders.

  • Join Path not recording in action

I'm trying to build an action in Illustrator CC (17.1) to post-process some vector files exported from a CAD package. The workflow is:
    Select All
    Object > Path > Join
    Effect > Path > Offset... (0.25mm)
However, when recording the action only Select All is captured. The Join and Offset operations are performed on the artwork, but do not appear in the action. I've tried searching around for more details on Join used in actions, or limitations of actions, and haven't found any issues here.  I  would expect all of the basic object manipulations in the Object and Effects menus to be available for action recording, but it seems that may not be the case? Can anyone shed light on what's going on here?

In the Actions panel menu, take a look at the Insert Menu Item command.

  • Join text paths?

Can someone tell me if it's possible and how to join text
    paths.
I mean if i have two letters say E and T, i convert them to paths then
delete a section from the right of the E
and from the left of the T so that they can join up,
then i take the two endpoints of path that i want to join then go to
    object>path>join, i get the message:
"to join, you must select two open endpoints. If they are not on the same path,
they can not be on text paths nor inside graphs, and if both of them are
grouped, they must be in the same group"
i did select 2 open endpoints and i tried ungrouping the text but i still get the same message.
    Any ideas?
    Daniel

    Daniel,
Probably, the upper border of the parts of the two letters to be joined are aligned, and the lower border is not.
Presuming sans serif letter, in many cases you will obtain the cleanest look if you:
    1) Type>Create Outlines,
    2) Ungroup and Object>Compound Path Release,
    3) With the Scissors Tool cut at the far corners of both upper and lower border,
    4) DirectSelect and Join both to rebuild the joining part.

  • Illustrator - Join paths - map design

I am working in CS5 on a map design.  I have overlapping roads that I want to connect together so that the paths smoothly join together similar to this:
So I have all of  my roads drawn out:
Then I select my roads and Object --> Path --> Join and get this:
The intersections are just what I want, but I don't want it to connect the endpoints of the roads together.  What am I doing wrong??
    Thanks!

    Something like this?
Just Group the lines and apply a New Stroke at the Group level. You example looks like you used Cmd(Ctrl)-J which joins the lines.

  • Joining Path in flash

    Hi all,
I'm very new in Flash so pardon my simple question. I can't
seem to get 2 path join together after drawing them out seperately
on the workspace. I understand that if the path is not close, the
    bucket fill can't be used.
    Thanks for your help!

Yes, mc1 and mc2 are both on the root timeline. The similar issue is that using a relative path does not work. Its been awhile since I used Flash and could do wonders with AS 2, but AS 3 is hard to get used to. (second nature to start typing _root...). I was told to avoid absolute paths and vars, and use events. What is the best way to have a movie clip play and then tell another (sibling) movie clip to play when it reaches a certain frame? When mc1 stops on frame x, the code below runs. The commented line is the one that does not work.
    var fl_SecondsToCountDown:Number = 1;
    var fl_CountDownTimerInstance:Timer = new Timer(1000, fl_SecondsToCountDown);
    fl_CountDownTimerInstance.addEventListener(TimerEvent.TIMER, fl_CountDownTimerHandler);
    fl_CountDownTimerInstance.start();
    function fl_CountDownTimerHandler(event:TimerEvent):void
    Object(root).mc2.play();
    //Object(this).mc2.play();
    fl_SecondsToCountDown--;

  • Joining Line Segments

The line looks like it's connected, but it's not. When I apply the brush effect it becomes disjointed. I want it to be one smooth stroke. Is there any way to join the line segments without having to redraw the stroke? I ask this because the line was imported into Illustrator from Flash, there are many more and I don't want to have to redraw them all. Thanks in advance for any help.

    Bob,
    Hopefully, you can:
    1. Deselect the path and then drag across each set of Anchor Points where the brushes go thin;
    2. Object>Path>Join.
If you select the lot before 1+2, and look in the Layers palette, or open Window>Document Info, and select Objects in the flyout menu, you should be able to see that there are multiple paths; the latter shows the number of points in each selected object.
If 1 + 2 do (or should it be does) not work, there are probably multiple Anchor Points at the end(s) of either/both of the paths to be joined; the surplus should be deleted.
Or the paths may be grouped, and should be ungrouped first; that may also be seen in the Layers palette/Document info.

  • How to get nice, joined curves when importing SVG, WMF etc?

    Hi,
I am importing SVG and WMF files for die lines for packaging design into Illustrator. These are later used as cut lines for our flatbed cutter, and we make the design work in Illustrator for printing.
The problem is that all curves are divided into paths that are not joined together, meaning that our cutter will jump up and down for every little bit of the curve, and it takes a long time compared to just dragging the knife in one, fast movement.
I have achieved to fix it by manually select curves and select JOIN, but it is time consuming, and I wonder if there is a way to select an entire path and join it? Or, are there some good way to get the imported data to real vector data, as that's what they are...?
I never got this issue in Serif PagePlus and Serif DrawPlus, but these software titles are not available for the Mac OS X.
I hope someone can point me in the right direction, as it's incredible to finally be back on the Adobe platform.
    Best regards,
    Thomas
    Norway

    Thomas,
What happens if you Ctrl/Cmd+A, then Ctrl/Cmd+J, to join everything in one go?
You should have adjacent paths joined together. Depending on the paths, there may be a few unwanted joinings, but hopefully they are obvious enough to spot and remove; you may be able to just Direct Select those unwanted path segments and delete them, leaving the original path ends as they are.

  • Join two objects?

I'm still working on the map in my previous thread about changing the colour of a path and wanted to know if there is a quick and easy way to join two adjacent objects together. Some of the shaded areas in the map are composed of multiple separate objects and I want to join them all into one big mass.
    Thanks, Dominic

    Hey Dominic,
You possibly already know that you can joing to end points together through Object -> Path -> Join, if not give that a go, but the two points need to be on top of each other in order to do so. To join multiple paths or end points, you could try the same approach, otherwise I may actually leave this one to the experts.
Hope this helped out in some way.

  • Joining Multiple Line Segments

Is there a way to join any number of line segments into one continuous line?
The end points overlap, but selecting all and going to Object>Path>Join seems to have no effect.
Making a compound path helps, but doesn't allow me to smooth the final path.

  • Path Eraser Tool use?

    Hello,
I have two shapes placed next to each other but the top section displays is a faint line to the left. How do I use the Path Eraser Tool to delete/remove that piece? Or is there a better way to remove?
    Note:
Top image displays without path displayed...
Bottom section displays with path displayed...
    Thx!
    RF

Do these two objects need to remain separate from each other? Since it looks like you were trying to line up the paths anyway, this problem can be very easily solved by merging the two objects.
You can combine the two objects by selecting both shapes and clicking on the "Unite" option in the Pathfinder panel (if you don't see the panel, go to Window > Pathfinder).
After that, you should have one shape, instead of two separate ones. You can then select the left-most anchor point using the Direct Selection tool and delete it. You should see the white area disappear.
Finally, select the two open points with the lasso tool, and join them by going to Object > Path > Join (or "control J"). You can adjust the points with the Direct selection tool to make sure the curve is nice and smooth.
