Pathetic Apple TV - no home sharing possible? Can connect mac but not ipad or iphone?

Pathetic apple tv cannot do mirror airplay with iphone and ipad , which was possible before ???
Miserable apple tv is not able to do home sharing and has frustrated me millions of times with turn on already on home sharing??
And some of times it will start to have home sharing but slow or unable to play home sharing contents???
Any chance I can replace or return this waste of money apple tv???

airplay is using appletv as audio and or video output for ios and osx devices which support airplay

My Apple TV (2nd gen) will only detect my Macbook Pro on Home Sharing. I have two iPads (1st gen and iPad Mini) both updated to the latest iOS but they just wont show up on apple TV home sharing.
Any thoughts?
The software on all devices is up to date, and all devices are connected to the same network.

Your first generation iPad is only capable of basic AirPlay, instruction for basic AirPlay are:
Assuming both devices are on the same network and that AirPlay is not turned off on the Apple TV, then simply tap on the screen when you are watching content you wish to stream to your Apple TV, then tap the airplay icon that appears in the control bar, choose the Apple TV from the menu that appears.
Your problems on the iPad mini, indicate a network problem at your end, perhaps the distances are too great or you have interference on your network.
Intermittent problems are often a result of interference. Interference can be caused by other networks in the neighbourhood or from household electrical items.
You can download and install iStumbler (NetStumbler for windows users) to help you see which channels are used by neighbouring networks so that you can avoid them, but iStumbler will not see household items.
Refer to your router manual for instructions on changing your wifi channel or adjusting your multicast rate.
There are other types of problems that can affect networks, but this is by far the most common, hence worth mentioning first. Networks that have inherent issues can be seen to work differently with different versions of the same software. You might also try moving the Apple TV away from other electrical equipment.

Welcome to the Apple Community.
In order to change your Apple ID or password for your iCloud account on your iOS device, you need to delete the account from your iOS device first, then add it back using your updated details. (Settings > iCloud, scroll down and hit "Delete Account")
Providing you are simply updating your existing details and not changing to another account, when you delete your account, all the data that is synced with iCloud will also be deleted from the device (but not from iCloud), but will be synced back to your device when you login again.
In order to change your Apple ID or password for your iCloud account on your computer, you need to sign out of the account from your computer first, then sign back in using your updated details. (System Preferences > iCloud, click the sign out button)

Problems with Home Sharing - works with some users but not all

Hi all,
On our Mac we have 3 different user accounts. Among the three, home sharing seems to work for two of them, but not three. For example, if I'm logged into User A's account, I'm able to access the library for users B & C. However, B & C are able to see user A's library, but items do not play or transfer. B & C can use each other's shared libraries without a problem.
Previously, all three users could use the other's libraries. I've done the obvious: restarted the computer, made sure sharing was turned on on all 3 accounts and synced the Apple ID and password on all three iTunes so that they're runing on the same Apple ID account.
The error I get when trying to transfer songs from A to either B or C is: "There was a problem downloading "[song name]". The URL "" could not be found on the server."
We're using iTunes 9.0.2.

Home sharing will load on PC but not Mac

I'm transferring music from my old computer (PC) to my new one (MacBook Pro) and I can see my Mac's library on my PC but not vice versa. Help?

Home sharing works on primary wifi but not via Access Point

I have two wifi routers set up at either ends of the house. The primary router (Netgear DGN2000) is connected to an Access Point (Edimax EW-7416APN) via a D-link Powerline ethernet connection. Both are configured with identical SSID names/passwords meaning I get seamless switching between the units when walking from one end of the house to the other. Internet connectivity works fine when connected to either unit on laptop, phone and ipad.
The only issue I am having is with itunes Home Sharing. My main PC is connected to the primary router via a further D-link Powerline ethernet connection. When I am within the wifi signal of the primary router, the Home Sharing library from the Main PC shows on my ipad2 and I can access all music no problem. However, if I walk to the other end of the house whilst playing a track then as soon as the wifi connection switches to the AP then the track will stop. When I search for libraries then the Home Sharing library doesn't show.
The Access Point is set to be in AP mode. The latest version of itunes is installed. The PC is running Windows XP
Any pointers anyone can give with this issue would be very welcomed as our main entertaining room is in the range of the AP wifi.

Do the old "forget this network" while on your home wifi, then reconnect to it. If that doesn't fix it, it's prob a router/internet issue at your home. Would need some more info to help futher troubleshoot.

Home sharing works with one account but not another?

My family has an apple tv, we've been having problems setting up the home sharing and tried everything. We eventually decided to try my brother's apple id instead of my mother's and it worked. So my question is; why does home sharing not work with one id but works with the other? any suggestions to get it to work with my mother's id?

Try resetting the Apple TV. enter your mother's ID again. Then remove her ID on iTunes and re-add it. Then see if it works this time.

Leopard Server PPTP VPN and Airport, can connect VPN but not AFP/SMB/VNC

I have on several occasions enabled a PPTP VPN service on Leopard Server and forwarded the appropriate ports in my Airport Extreme with this result: Outside clients can connect to the Leopard Server, but trying to connect to the server with AFP, SMB, Screen sharing or Remote Desktop over this VPN just times out.
The VPN seems to be working OK, but after establishing the VPN I can't use it. The client (iMac with Mac OS X 10.5.3) gets an IP, DNS, Router etc. from the network's DHCP.
I have tried setting the server as default host with no effect.
Everything is running the latest available updates.
Is there any bug/problem with PPTP VPN passthrough an Airport Extreme on the Server side? Is there anything that needs to be configured other than forwarding port 1723 on the Airport?

I had a similar problem. Hope my solution can help you.
Check if the routers on both sides of the VPN connection use the same ip address style (ie. 10.0.0.x, 192.168.1.x). If they both use the same style then they conflict.
I have a Airport Extreme at home and was VPNing to a server behind a time capsule. Both were using the 10.0.0.x style IP. I switched my home IP style to 192.168.1.x and everything worked right away.

I had a shared mobileme account for my work calendar- 4 people sharing call using one set of calendars. It is on my mac but not on my iphone anymore...just 3 of my calendars went to icloud. Any idea how to get the calendars from a "family" mobileme?

I had a group account on mobileme...a family pack that each of us at work had an individual account and we all shared one account in the family. It kept our work calendar- a schedule telling who is in the office and who is on call. This is still on my macBook but not on my phone or my iPad. Any idea how I make my phone show the calendars on my MacBook? It was there before I went to iCloud.

If your email account offers a webmail access, I suggest checking the webmail - log in to your account using the webmail access, and I predict you will see all those "unread" emails there and can dispose of them from there.
This happens because the iPhone that went bad, when reading those emails, did not remove them from your email provider's servier.

OpenVPN: Can connect & ping, but not more; route add command failed

I have a problem with openVPN.
Our university provides an openVPN server to which we can connect. Some time ago, my setup (with given config) works without any problems. But now, it simply fails. I'll need openVPN to tunnel into university to get access to "internal net" wikis and terminal servers for doing my master thesis.
The openVPN connects to the server and all routes are set correctly. I can ping various server in the internet but I can't connect to them (via browser or any other apps).
The version of openVPN is openvpn 2.1_rc20-1

Can connect to but not administer Airport Extreme

New problem, just happened today. I can connect to the network I've created and get online (writing this from the affected machine) but not administer the Airport network.
When I open the Airport Utility, I get nothing in the window at all. I've tried on my other machine, a MacBook Pro running 10.4.9, and can see it. I even tried on an old Mac mini G4 and it can also see and administer.
This also hurts printing - the machine can't see the base station, so it hangs just looking for it.
Any ideas?

Indeed - this is a "g" Airport Extreme, so I've had it for a while. Like I said, the other machines can see it.
And the problem comes and goes – today I can see the Base Stations, yesterday I could not.

HT4325 I can use airplay on iMac but not iPad or iPhones

My iMac streams music to my Apple TV units and I have the airplay icon appear. I can happily stream music to different speakers from my iMac.
I am using Pandora to play music on my iMac and would like to stream it to different speakers. I thought I could do this using either my iPhones (4S & 5) and iPad2 but no such luck. It would appear that I cannot stream to the AppleTVs as they are first generation but they happily work with the iMac?!?
Am I missing something or is there a way I can achieve streaming from these devices using Airplay?
Background: The wifi is fine, all devices are using the same system and are connected using a router. It works well for the iMac using itunes but alas Pandora is not available on itunes.
Any suggestions?

No you aren't doing anything wrong, the first generation Apple TV can't receive streams from an iOS device.

Wi-fi at home: it works with my laptop, but not with my iphone

Hey guys. I just got an iphone and i cannot connect to my wi-fi network, but i can with my laptop (it's an hp). Does anyone know anything that i can do to connect? It is password protected, but i entered the password with iphone. Also, when I turn the iphone on after sleep mode, it picks up the network signal, but when i try to go onto the internet or itunes it does not work. Thanks a lot guys!

I had the exact same problem, your wireless router has a firewall set up not allowing you to access the wi-fi. You need to go to your firewall security setup and you will see your firewall encryption, that's the password your iPhone wants. If the letters are seperated by comma's, do not enter them. For example, I have 128bit encryption, which has 13 sets of letters/numbers seperated by commas, without commas I have a total of 26. Enter that as shown and you should be able to use your wifi at home.

It will allow your homesharing, airplay, airprint, propreitary apple networking support, and other features. You should absolutely try to enable it. Some routers, even when the ports are opened, just don't work perfectly with Bonjour broadcasts. But you might be able to get it to work. Look to see if anybody else with your router has already figured this out in the eircom forums.

Sorry, let me clarify. I have two Apple IDs A and B:
A: Used for iCloud. All my calendar, mail, contacts, and other iCloud features are here. This is the ID I use as "the" iCloud on my iOS devices and OS X machines.
B: Used only for purchases, on all my devices and machines. This is what I used to log into iTunes, or to buy apps for iOS or OS X.
The issue is that the only way (currently) to set up Family Sharing is to invite from an iCloud ID (A, in my case) on an iOS 8 device. That's not the ID (B) I use for purchases. The question is whether there's a way to share those purchases given that I'm configured on all my devices with A for iCloud. (Clearly if I somehow send invitations from B, I can share purchases; but that's not the question.)
It sounds like the answer to that question is 'No'.
If that's the case, how do I invite from B? Do I have to configure an iOS device with B as the iCloud ID? My problem isn't that I want to ("willy nilly") avoid inviting form B; it's that there seems to be no way (certainly no convenient way) to do that.
