Pathetic lack of 4G phones with no physical keyboard

I've been a Verizon customer since my first mobile phone and I was one of the first people to buy the original Droid when it launched, but the leaked news about the upcoming Droid 3 has me strongly leaning towards going with another carrier.  I find it baffling that the Droid 3 would come out right now and not be 4G enabled.  It hasn't even been released and it's already outdated, and yet Verizon will insist on sticking people with 2 year contracts for a phone that will never be able to connect to its fastest networks.  I've yet to hear of any other 4G phone that even MIGHT come to Verizon with a physical keyboard, an absolute 100% dealbreaker for me.  The loyal early adopters who jumped on the Android bandwagon and made it the juggernaut it is today come out of contract in July.  We want physical keyboards and we want cutting edge phones.  Where is the phone you think we're going to buy, Verizon?  Because everything else I've seen is a joke.

This has been a significant frustration for me as well.  I follow phones pretty closely and have kept up on all the rumors, leaks, and announcements on the various forums from BGR to droidforums and howardforums.  What is killing me is that there is not so much as an obfuscated indication that Verizon will have a 4g with a physical keyboard any time in the future.
They are rolling out more and more candybar phones and there are, essentially, zero options for anyone who does not like the candybar models with only virtual keyboards.  Meanwhile, the other 4g carriers all have phones out with physical keyboards.  Sprint actually has at least 2 of their 4g phones with physical keyboards and have had them out for months now.  Seriously, how hard is it for Verizon to get it together and diversify their offerings with something other than yet another candybar 4g phone?
The real kicker is Verizon put out the Droid 3 without 4g.  Seriously.  What are you guys thinking?  4g covers a huge part of the market and your only new Android phone with physical keyboard is only 3g?  Was this an attempt at marketing suicide?
Those who say you don't really need a physical keyboard must not use the phone the same way many of us in professional environments with detailed and quick response demands migth use them.  I have tried numerous virtual keyboards and none of them are responsive and fast enough to keep up with me.  One my Droid 1, I can hammer out significantly detailed and thorough responses very quickly with little to no error.  This is why so many BB users demand the physical keyboard of the BB.  If the virtual keyboards were good enough, trust me, we would have switched long ago for the weight and size differences.  The simple fact is no virtual keyboard is on par with a decent physical keyboard.
My contract is up in a few months, I am well into my upgrade period, and I am seriously considering switching to another carrier for 4g with a physical keyboard.  I am not blowing my upgrade on a phone that will irritate the hell out of me, especially when it would mean locking into another 2-year contract with a carrier who clearly is not developing devices for professional users who prefer Android.

  • Re-boot Blackberry Phone With No Physical Keyboard

    With the standard keyboard version of BB phone simply pressing Alt+RightShift+Del all at the same time will force the phone to do a re-boot.  Back in the days of PC-DOS pressing Ctrl+Alt+Del accomplished the re-boot.
    With the new BB10 touch screen phone, I would be curious to know how the re-boot can be manually done...???

  • Basic phone with sliding QWERTY keyboard

    I am looking for Basic phone with sliding QWERTY keyboard, that will text and send pictures without a data plan.
    I am now on disability and can't continue with the high cost of data plans.
    I was using my Droid 4 but without Data turned on it will text but will not send pictures.
    My daughter is sending me an LG-505c so I am hoping that will work but I would still like to get my calender on the phone also.
    anyway I need ideas on what phones will work.

    The LG ENV3 will work without a data plan, as will several of the older "multimedia" phones and basic phones.  My husband is still using an LG VX 5400; my mom uses an LG VX 5200 and both send and receive picture messages (though they are small).  Samsung Sway, Alias, LG Voyager, EnvTouch - all of these work without a data plan, and will send and receive texts.

  • Key mapping question. (for mobile phones with PC-like keyboard)

    For phones with mini keyboard (one button per one character, like a PC keyboard).
    I'm trying to implement a form with few text boxes. The goal is to let user type the message like they're using a PC keyboard (unlike in traditional phones, where you need to press the 'numpad two' button three times in order to type the character 'C')
    I've successfully implemented this functionality. But it's an ugly implementation because I use a switch-cases for each and EVERY keycodes.
    Forexample:
    char inputChar;
    switch(keyCode)
    case 97: input = 'A' break;
    case 98: input = 'B' break;
    // go on until every keys are covered, including the lower case letters. T_T
    buffer.append(inputChar);
    Yes I know that my programming skill is real crap >_<, so I try google for some good implementation method. But I always found only the detail about the traditional numpad implementations.
    Ok, my real question is, can this keyboard implementation be done in a better way? The code should be able to look more beautiful than this, right?
    Thank you. =)

    I still don't get the problem here?
    A textbox in a form will work just fine with those mini keyboards. You don't need to do anything for it..
    Otherwise, this code can obviously be done better, a simple array where you just lookup your keycode will be much simpler and faster for instance.

  • Fascinate for someone who is used to a physical keyboard

    I am looking to upgrade my wife's ENV2 to a droid.  She likes the Fascinate byt us concerned about her move from a physical keyboard to a touch screen keyboard.   The Fascinate seems to be a nice large screen (and therefore an easier touch entry), but I wanted to see how others felt with that kind of transition.
    Also... general feelings (pro or con) on the phone (probably going CPO)?
    Thanks!

    I used to have a phone with a physical keyboard (and coincidentally, it was the EnV2) prior to the Fascinate and had some reservations myself prior to purchasing this phone.  The phone has a typing feature called Swype which is supposed to speed up typing on the virtual keyboard.  Of course, it may feel a bit odd at first not having something tangible to press on, but I got over that fairly quickly.  In case you haven't read about it, Swype allows you to type by sliding your finger across the virtual keyboard, as opposed to pressing on the virtual key.
    Here is a YouTube link that shows you Swype in action.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WuP6AQPRpUg
    Of course, some people won't like this, so for those individuals who actually like pressing virtual buttons, this phone also has an android keyboard.  I still recommend playing with the Swype feature before deciding whether to use that or not.
    As with any phone, there are pros and cons associated with the phone.  What the pros and cons are specifically depends on what phone you're comparing it to.  It's somewhat difficult to compare this phone to the EnV2 as they are different.  One thing she may notice is that the battery goes out fairly quickly on this phone if the phone is constantly being turned on and used.  I could go 2 days on my EnV2 before charging, but I have to recharge this phone once a day (sometimes twice based on how much I use it).  But that's an unfair comparison since this phone is like a mini-computer, and I use this phone for many more things than I did the EnV2 (e.g., surfing the web, emails, creating word processing documents, and some games).  btw, playing games is one thing that will drain your battery very quickly...although using the word processor for a while can drain it quickly, too.
    If she texts a lot, she'll enjoy the difference in the texting feature.  On this phone, like many Android phones, she will be able to see the entire conversation, which means no more looking through sent texts when she can't quite remember what the person is responding to.  Here's a screen cap I found online that shows an example text.
    And I do like the 4" screen.  Yes, it makes the phone a bit larger than most, but it's worth it, imo.
    The phone does occasionally freeze up on me, but pulling out the battery usually fixes that.  Also, while the battery life isn't the greatest, one can control that a bit by downloading an application to "kill" (or force quit) applications.  Unlike the EnV2, you will have to turn this phone off and on every once in a while (again, it's like a mini-computer and computers start to lag if you leave them on for an extended period of time, too).
    Hope this helps you, and if you have any other questions, please feel free to ask.

  • Problem sending IM with physical keyboard

    Motorola Droid 4 XT894 w/ CyanogenMod 10.1.3-maserati (Although it was same issue when I was on stock Android), Verizon and WiFi, Skype v4.4.0.31835
    This has been a huge issue for me for a while, and I thought all the updates to Skype would eventually fix this bug...but apparently not.
    My phone has a physical keyboard, and while I understand physical keyboards are being phased out, and that Skype is desigend around the touch screen, I feel it's still important to support these needs as I use  Skype for chats as well.
    The issue is that when I slide out my keyboard and type a message, the send button dissappears and I cannot send the message by pushing the enter key on the physical keyboard, which only creates a new line in the message.  I physically have to slide the keyboard closed on the phone so that the on-screen keyboard shows up and then I can push "Send" on the screen to send a message.  This is a physical nuisance, which brings me to another point...  I really wish Skype did not change that the Enter key on the physical keyboard only creates a new line (which I understand is its intended function), because all the old versions of skype I was able to send messages just fine by hitting enter on the keypad.  I wish there was a general setting that can be checked to say "Enter to Send" like all other popular text messaging apps so you can please both parties...
    What I don't understand is that version 4.12.254 skype for my iPad (MC706LL/A), which I have a bluetooth keyboard linked I can push enter on the physical bluetooth keyboard and it will send the message...what the heck???
    This occurence is 5/5 tries.  Please do something about this!  Thank you!
    Solved!

    Using my HP slatebook x2 (convertible netbook), i have come across the issue where i am not able to sent a message on skype, for the simple reason that there is no "sent" button on the screen.
    The ENTER-key, will insert a new linebreak.
    Using the software keyboard (android's default), there is a button (above the keyboard) to send the message.
    When i reconnect my keyboard (remove it and then putting it back on), the button will show up, but only for one-time use.
    skype vers.: 4.4.0.31835
    android vers: 4.2.2 (stock)
    keyboard: default hardware keyboard that HP deliveres with the tablet
    Hope the devs can resolve this issue, goodluck!!

  • Want to change my phone with another one

    I have an LG basic phone with slide out keyboard for texting (no data/web).  It powers off and is getting annoying. my son has several old smart phones that work fine (just keeps upgrading).
    Can I simply pull the chip/card from mine and put into one of his smart phones and use it?  Will that work? I don't want data/web.
    Thanks,
    Regis

    Verizon basic phones don't have SIM cards, just 4G LTE smartphones.  If you were to activate one of your son's old smartphones, you'll have to also pay for a data plan since they are required to activate a smartphone.  If you aren't eligible for an upgrade or don't see a basic phone you like on Verizon's web site, you could buy one from ebay or somewhere else.  Just ensure that it's Verizon branded and has a clean ESN.

  • Clamshell style phone with QWERTY keyboard?

    Does Verizon Wireless have any plans to once again sell a basic clamshell-style phone with a QWERTY keyboard?  My aging Samsung Alias 2 fits this description, but it is getting old.  I can find phones with QWERTY keyboards but they are "candybar" style, which I do not like.

        Steve_in_Maryland, thanks for posting. I can understand you anticipation for a new clamshell device. For the latest releases stay up to date right here: http://bit.ly/n5snpq .

  • Suggestion for a possible iphone with slide out keyboard.

    I dont really know if there is a suggestion forum but i thought it would be neat if apple designed a iphone with a physical keyboard for those people who love to text. Apple could even run a internet pole to see what there customers would think i mean the iphone is top notch but i think having one with a slide out keyboard could possibly increase apples sales. Any who just thought id throw that out there and keep up the great work Apple.

    I need to access and use Skype from overseas, and am considering buying a a Chinese phone called the X10.  It's an unlocked quad-band GSM phone - which is fine - supports GPRS & WiFi, but is not 3G. You probably want an Android or iPhone for use with the Skype mobile apps.  Phones with the Symbian operating system - mostly Nokia phones - can also use a Skype app, but lacks some of the features available in the Android or iPhone versions.  If you are able to confine your use to Skype to WiFi, not having 3G or 4G/LTE on your mobile phone is probably not an issue.
    I have a Nokia N8 mobile phone, which uses the Symbian operating system.  Nice phone, compatible with GSM/UMTS networks around the world.  The Skype app for it is not great, but works on WiFi or 3G data networks.  What I ended up doing was also purchasing an iPod Touch, which is compatible with apps for the iPhone, and a WiFI hotspot app for my N8.  Then I use Skype on the iPod, connecting to the Internet through the N8's hotspot app via WiFi.  It takes two devices in this case to use Skype, but I'm making use of the better Skype app on the iPod over the N8.  Or I can just use the iPod if I have access to WiFi wherever I happen to be.
    Hope that helps!

  • I refuse to buy nokia phone with less than 1500 mA...

    I realized this after latest addition of E52 with 1500 mAh battery So far, i have purchased about 30 or so Nokia handsets during past 14 years.
    The battery Life of E52 is just marvelous. simply amazing. Cant imaging how I survived 14 years exclusively using Nokia phones with less than 1500 mAh battery.
    The new touch screen phones like the latest N-800 with HDMI Port has only 1200 mAh battery!!! why not put a 2100 mAh battery on such a beauty? people are going to use the phones more than just making call, this demands more battery power. 1200 mAh battery will last less than a day.... People, expecially myself will be dissapointed in using such a phone with so less battery power.
    Granted these days processors are more efficient, but wont it be good if Nokia puts little more juice to their most beautiful touchscreen handsets?
    Having less battery power is the main reason i have been holding off my purchase of touch screen phones like N900, and now this N-8.
    Please Nokia, please try to put the best in it's class battery for the best in it's class phones.
    Even the iPhone 4G has (1200 mAH) less capacity battery than my E52.
    My E52 goes on and on for weeks together without charging. On heavy usage it easily lasts for 1 full week!... (never been like this for any of the previous nokia phones...) especially the top of the end models like my old N82
    So far, I am very happy with my E52. Wish some thing similar i.e. slim E series comes with touch screen soon.

    Hello kmschmehl-
    I cannot truly express how sorry I am to hear about your total experience with the delivery and subsequent return of this fridge.  It certainly sounds as though Best Buy has put you through the ringer and I can absolutely understand your disappointment and anger with us.
    While it sounds like some aspects of the purchase and delivery were at least adequate, any opportunity that we had to show you why you should purchase from Best Buy went by the wayside.  However, Best Buy is not in the business to provide merely adequate experiences and I am saddened that this is the best we could summon for your purchase.  We are capable of better than what we showed you.
    I’m glad to hear that you have finally been able to get the assistance you needed to get this refund resolved and make you whole again.  In addition, I do hope that you are enjoying the fridge you purchased at Lowe’s.  I certainly wish that it had been a Best Buy fridge in your kitchen instead, but I can understand why you chose to go with another retailer.
    It sounds like the store has you in good hands once your card arrives and I believe that the reason they need the physical card is that the credit card company requires it to be physically scanned for returns.  Hopefully you will not run into any further issues with this refund and it’s my hope that sometime in the future, you might grant us another chance at your business.  I will be sending you a Private Message with some additional details as well.  To check your Private Messages, please log into the forum and click on the envelope in the upper right hand corner.

    My issue is that I use a "CellSet" in my airplane that integrates smart phones with the avionics so I can use my phone during flight. I do not listen to music while flying, so I have no audible indication at all that I'm receiving a call.  The RF output by BLackberry's is so bad, that I have to mount it on the other side of the cockpit to avoid the RF interference thus making the vibrate notification no good.  My older Blackberry's channeled the phone-ring through the earphone jack just fine.  Who knows what BB/RIM was thinking, or the lack there of by not designing this option into their phones!

    hello,
    I don't see any question in your message ?
