Sorry for a weird post, but I just had to do it. I've distro-bounced for the last probably 4 years now and finally settled on Arch by accident. I stated with [of course] Ubuntu just to try things out and then researched and researched and researched and settled on Zenwalk which I still think is the bomb. Then I got antsy again and looked at some others like Wolvix, straight Slackware, Salix OS when it came out via ex-Zenwalk developers, CrunchBang... who knows what else. I have the pile of CDs to show for it all.
In any case, I went for Arch because I needed a 64bit distro for work. I actually looked at Arch once before a couple years ago but made the mistake of thinking it was a source-based/focused distro (I now know it can be but does not need to be) and thus once I saw the install screen and mirror setup and a bunch of other crap I got panic-attacks and flashbacks from my stint with FreeBSD. Yes, that was a quasi-fun time and I *finally* got FreeBSD booting on a MacBook and felt amazing but realized that compiling all through the freaking day was sucky and the hardware support was really bad as well.

Ok, enough back story. Fast forward and I've been using Arch for perhaps 6 months now. I started this thread to remind everyone who takes it for granted that it is AMAZING. I cannot freaking believe the packages I find out about somewhere and then find in the AUR. I can't remember the last time (if ever) I didn't find what I wanted. Texlive-Localmanager makes things seamless for emacs work and keeping track of things in pacman/yaourt. Netpkg in Zenwalk was great, but I really missed the ability to find *true* orphans like with portmaster in FreeBSD. Arch can!
What brought this about? I was curious about how one might make a "live" version of their distro in a kind of "generic" way because I wanted to use something like "Arch Live" and didn't know if it existed. I want a live distro on CD or USB but love Arch and want to make it custom and not have to be stuck with some other distro's live version. So... I googled "how to make a live version of your distro" and was not satisfied.
For the sh*t of it I googled "arch linux live" and right there was a link to the Arch Wiki about making a live version of Arch. "Fu*#ing-A that's awesome," I exclaimed, completely alone in my kitchen and then decided to make this post. What in the world *doesn't* Arch have documented for the user?? Seriously, what an amazing distro and what a shame it took me so long to find it! It's literally got everything a geek like me wants: don't do what I don't tell you to do (because I want to feel like a power user), superb documentation (for all the times I realize I'm not actually a power user), an amazing forum, packages out the butt, and the best system for managing packages I've seen to-date (though to be fair I only know netpkg, variants of [g][sl]apt[-get], and brief encounters with openSuSe). Linux heaven.

Keep making Arch better! I try to give back. I update the wiki when I find broken links and just added a bunch of crap to the section on getting the Canon iP4300 printer to work. I could have just taken from the wiki, filled in some missing pieces, and dealt with the broken links... but I tried to document it for 2 reasons: 1) selfishness: next time I reinstall and have to do this, I'll remember those little tricks I figured out the last time! 2) Arch is awesome and one should contribute where possible!
Okay. Enough of a rant. I hope this helps the community to re-remember how sweet Arch really is!

Audiobooks skip backwards multiple chapters often when pausing and resuming

As the title states I am having an issue where if I pause and resume sometimes the book will skip back multiple hours.
This issue is very inconsistent sometimes it happens sometimes not. It is something I will experience on almost every book multiple times at some point.
I am having an issue that spans: OS 5-7 or more, iPhone 4, 4s, 5s, iPad 2 and other. I believe Ive had the issue show itself on iTunes but I rarely use iTunes but fairly certain it has happened.
I make most of my audiobooks from CDs that I purchase but I have had the problem on others as well. I also sometime download audiobooks that are in MP3 format and convert them.
I have used different programs with the same outcome but at the moment I am using chapter and verse to create my audiobooks. I usually break them into 2 or 3 files because of how horrible the reliability is to begin with.
The M4B format seems to be plagued with issues and I am hoping I can put my finger on this one because it is by far the most annoying.
If it matters I typically use voice setting, high efficiency setting, VBR setting, 64kbits if stereo setting but set it to mono so it is 32kbits, and I have the sample rate set to auto. It results in files around 160MB/10HRs and sound no worse than what audible publishes them as.
I doubt that matters though since I have experienced this issues with different settings.
I also am currently setting my chapters to every 10 minutes to make skipping easier because of how common this issue is. If they are longer finding my spot is very difficult using the slider on an iPhone. I might even go smaller on the next book and make smaller files as well.
Any insight would be great. I am most certainly NOT the only person with this issue since I have been able to recreate it hundreds of times with CD source, mp3 source, on my MacBook, on my PC, with several different programs, without using any special program at all (iTunes only)
Apple most def will not be resolving an issue that is several years old so I'd like to know how to format my books in a way to avoid this.

One thing you can look at is if in iTunes, you right click on the audiobook track, choose get info, and go to the options tab, remember playback position should be checked.

Turn off 'Allow and Remember' for plug-in

I've started really liking that you can allow plug-ins for individual sites, because what that means for me is that I can open a new tab that contains a Video, and Adobe Flash _won't_ start immediately playing it (meaning that I have to hunt down the tab, if I've queued lots, and pause the video).
I made the mistake, however, of clicking "Allow and Remember" for Facebook :-(
I would _really_ like to have a list of the sites where I've told the plug-in to remember, so I can tell it to forget. Is this buried somewhere in a special page like 'about:plugins'?

FIOS DVR Info Screen during Pause and Playback unnecessary!

The Info button on the remote is a nice feature, but am I the only one who thinks the Info Screen stays on to long? My count is 6 to 7 seconds. Where it is more of a pain is when you use the Pause button. The Info Screen will stay on until you either hit the Exit button or Play button. Hitting Play starts the 6 to 7 second clock before it disappears. Yes I know you can hit the Exit button and it will disappear. At this rate my Exit button will wear out soon.
There are 2 times when my fingers are constantly hitting the Exit button to cancel the Info Screen.
1. Sporting events. When you just have to see the play again, you use the Skip Back 10 seconds button watch it again. Was he safe or out? Was it a touchdown or not? I don’t know because the Info Screen is showing. I have to go back and view it again and remember to hit the Exit button so the Info Screen will disappear so I can see first base or the end zone. The same goes for game stats that pop up on the screen during the game. You hit pause to view it and the Info Screen pops up over it. You have to hit Exit again.
2. Newsmagazine (60 Minutes, etc.) / Reality shows (Survivor, etc.) / Subtitled movie or TV show (Heroes, etc.). For the rest of you who don’t like sports and could care less about my number one reason for hating the Info Screen maybe this will sway you. Every now and then during one of the above mentioned shows a text subtitle is bound to pop up. You hit the Pause or Skip Back button to read it. There is the Info Screen in the way.
I called Verizon to ask them if they could shorten the time the Info Screen stays when you hit the Info button or maybe they could make it a watermark image. The Pause is different because the Info Screen will stay on indefinitely or until you hit the Exit button. My suggestion was to get rid of the Info Screen during Pause, Play, Rewind and Fast Forward and just show a small watermark image of a Pause button on the side of the screen.
The response I got from them was that my complaint was logged. This will not get fixed unless other people complain. If you are also bothered by this call customer service and respond to this thread and maybe they will fix it. One can dream.

I can’t believe no one else hates the Info Screen that shows up across the bottom of the TV when you Pause, Play, Rewind, Fast Forward, Skip Rewind and Skip Forward. If I want to know what I’m watching I’ll hit the Info button or OK button. I don’t need all those other buttons/actions to do the same thing. It is very redundant. Is anyone else tired of the Info screen popping up during the above actions? A solution would be very simple. Show an image of a Pause button or any of the other actions on the corners of the TV screen.
And yes I know you can hit the Exit button or OK button to make it go away, but why should I have to!

I'm no longer getting Allow and Remember prompt. I have to manually click the red icon in the upper left to access it. How do I restore the automatic prompt?

Yesterday I visited a site to which I often go, pingtest.net. Normally, when I visit that site, a thin horizontal bar appears at the top of the browser viewing frame. I do not recall what it says, but it stretches the entire length of frame, from left to right. On the right edge of the bar is an x, if I wish to close it. In addition, when this horizontal bar appears, I also get a box which is about six to seven times the height of the thin horizontal bar that appears over the left edge of the thin horizontal bar. This box stretches across the width of about a sixth or fifth of the width of the horizontal bar. It contains something like the following: Show All, Allow, Allow and Remember. I normally click the Show all option, and I normally select Allow Now for all options.
Here's what happened yesterday: I went to pingtest.net, the horizontal bar appeared, and everything seemed normal. However I took no action. Instead, I changed my mind and decided to go to a different URL. My cursor was in the middle of the screen. I moved the cursor up to what I intended to be the URL field, in order to enter a new URL. Unfortunately I didn't move the cursor sufficiently. So, instead of clicking in the URL field, I clicked right in the middle of the horizontal bar. I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT I CLICKED BUT FROM THAT MOMENT TO THIS THAT HORIZONTAL BAR HAS NEVER RE-APPEARED. WHATEVER I CLICKED, IT APPEARS I INSTRUCTED FIREFOX TO NEVER PROVIDE ME WITH THAT HORIZONTAL BAR AGAIN!!!
As a result, I am also no longer getting the grey box with the Show All, Allow, Allow and Remember options.
How can I restore normal behavior, and get the normal horizontal bar and the normal box with the Show All, Allow, Allow and Remember options?

We had another thread recently where the user clicked "Continue Blocking" and thereafter, Firefox never showed the infobar. I posted a way to clear the block so that the infobar would display once again. Installing and running Arch linux on the new MacBook 2015

So Apple has just started taking orders for the new 2015 MacBook. You know --
the thinnest and lightest MacBook to date (even thinner than the MacBook Air),
with a 12 inch retina display, the Intel Core M processor, a single USB-C port,
and the new force touch trackpad.
I'm pretty sure there are a few people like me who'd like to buy this new
MacBook and then install and run Arch (or some other flavor of linux) on it.
But of course, this MacBook is in many ways very dissimilar to previous MacBook
Pros and MacBook Airs. So this thread is a shout out to likeminded individuals
who are willing to brave the odds and install Linux on this new machine, so we
can help each other figure out (and hopefully fix) the inevitable issues that
will arise when we venture into this uncharted territory!
I have a little bit of experience installing and running Arch on MacBook Pros
and other Apple computers, but I'm (very) far from being an expert. But based
on my limited experience, I think the following areas will pose the biggest
challenges to getting Linux properly up and running on the new MacBook:
1. Installation: it's possible that booting a live USB will fail. So we might
have to use a CD. Indeed, perhaps we may even have to build a special ISO
image for this laptop. And once the install is complete, EFI/EFISTUB booting
with/without refit/refind may or may not work. Also, installing a bootloader
(grub, gummiboot, etc.) for dual booting Mac OS X and Linux may be a
challenge. We might have to endure kernel panics and deal with cryptic error
messages while booting.
2. Wifi may or may not work reliably. We might have to do some tinkering with
different drivers, etc.
3. Battery life may not be very good. We might have to fix a few things here.
4. The HiDPI retina display may or may not work properly with specific window
managers/desktop environments. Fonts/icons might be too tiny, may not scale,
etc.
5. The new Force touch trackpad may not work out of the box. In fact, I'm
fairly sure the regular xf86-input-synaptics package won't play nice with
this trackpad. There may not be support for features like the trackpad's
haptic feedback, multi-finger gestures, pressure sensitivity, etc. Indeed,
this might actually take a while to get properly working under Linux.
6. I don't know if the new USB-C port will work out of the box. It may not
play nice with USB flash drives and other peripherals and there may be
issues with ehci/uhci/whatever.
I tried Googling around trying to learn as much as I could about the issues
above, but since the laptop is going on sale only today and most users are
probably not interested in running Linux on it, I came up quite empty. I think
many others on this forum might also have faced the same issue.
So here's an open invitation. Let's share our experiences trying to get linux
working on this laptop. If you buy this laptop and try to install Arch on
it, please let us know how it went! Even if some things work out of the box, it
might be useful for others to know, so please share.
And of course, if you have more information/gotchas: for example, if you
encountered and managed to fix one or more of the issues above, or you
encountered a problem that's not on the list above, or even if you tried
something and it didn't work out as expected, please post below. I'm sure this
will be a very big help to others trying to solve similar issues on the same
hardware. Thanks!

On 2, it may just be a case of needing firmware, my laptop has a BCM43602 card, and the firmware required has only just been added to the linux-firmware package. Prior to that I had to install it manually.
On 5, I'm wondering if you identified them as SPI devices by looking in OS X, I ask because my laptop categorises my keyboard and trackpad in the same way. But they are actually still both connected to the USB bus, and presumably using SPI as an interconnect between the keyboard/trackpad and the microcontroller that tie them together.

Flash Player keeps pausing and buffering

I've never really had this problem before but today whenever I've tried to watch flash videos, it keeps pausing and buffering every few seconds. This seems to be a problem for me on any website except YouTube (YouTube still works fine). I've tried disabling hardware acceleration but that made no difference. I have a high speed cable modem so I don't see how it could have anything to do with my connection speed.
My operating system is Mac OS 10.5.8. My web browser is Firefox version 3.6.13, I also tried using Safari and was experiencing the same problem. The flash player version I'm using is MAC 10,2,152,26. Any help is greatly appreciated! Thanks a million.

o disable Protected Mode, add the following line to your mms.cfg file located in:
Windows 32bit: C:\windows\system32\macromed\flash
Windows 64bit: C:\windows\syswow64\macromed\flash
ProtectedMode=0
If the mms.cfg file does not exist, create one using any standard text editor (e.g.. notepad)
Depending on your operating system, you might need to first save the mms.cfg file to a writable location (such as your documents or desktop folder) and then copy the file into the destination folder using Windows Explorer.
To re-enable Protected Mode, simply remove the line from the mms.cfg file.

Unable to clear a specific file from the Download Manager. This file (type: .flv) download is "paused" and I cannot Resume or Clear from the history. Help anyone ?

I noticed a certain file is "stuck" in the Download Manager. The file download appears to be Paused and all attempts to remove / clear / resume have not worked. The file is a .flv type. The mouse-over info does show the url address and it shows 40MB /40MB complete. Help anyone ?

Firefox will not sign me in and remember my passwords at all. It first started on this site, New Jersey Online (NJ.com). I created an account there and Firefox will not log me in. That happened, January 3rd, 2012.

Firefox asked me if I want to remember this passwod, i said Yes. The box in city data forum has a remember be box I checked it.
The result means- I did not get signed in at all.
I tried multiple times, none worked.
I allowed firefox to do these things -
1. Remember browsing history for at lease one day
2. Remember download histroy.
3. Accept cookies from sites, including third party cookies, until their expiration
4. Clear the folowing when firefox closes: browsing history, download history, and form/search history.
I feel afraid this problem is gonna hsppen forever (and maybe even on this site!), and it will not sign me in to any site on the internet.

Any way to disable the loading animation in Firefox 3.6.15? it makes me forget what I was going to do. it's also shown in the addon update information. PLease help me disable the loading animation Everywhere in the Firefox browser.
For other sites with loading animations, I can use the Adblock plus element hiding helper . Just need to remove the animations by firefox

Start Firefox in <u>[[Safe Mode]]</u> to check if one of the extensions or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).

Download for Photoshop Elements 11 pauses and does not resume

Download Photoshop Elements 11 using Chrome. After several hours the download pauses and does not reume.

I downloaded Photoshop Elements directly from Adobe. I used the download assistant provided by Adobe. Since this post I have been able to complete the download. My problem may have been a slow connection either from Adobee or at my end. I discovered that I hade also been downloading a large Microsoft update that may have impeded my efforts to download Elements. Thank you for your help.

I managed to find this reference specifically for restoring on Snow Leopard:
If you are using Mac OS X Snow Leopard, start your computer from the installation disc. Then use the "Restore From Time Machine Backup" utility.

Finally, I cannot see why Time Machine would leave out your playlists and ratings? Think about it. Why would Time Machine specifically copy everything BUT your playlists and ratings? Ryan, what are your options? I would have to ask you this: Are you certain that you properly did the sync? That is another/different forum altogether: Using iPhone /see subsection on Syncing.

Trying to install the new app for iPhoto and is now paused and I can't get it working
