Pause Frames in 2950-LRE

Hello experts,
I have an eight port 2950 Long Range Ethernet switch, model WS-C2950ST-8-LRE, with sw image c2950lre-i6l2q4-mz.121-22.EA5a.bin. I have CPE585 on the other end of the lre link. The distance is about 250 meters. When I issue the command,
sh controller ethernet-controller, I see the following on one of the lre ports (this is a partial output, it details on all the lre ports).
LRE Enet Stats on Switch:
Transmit
1971984524 Bytes
176387421 Frames
14274008 Pause frames
Can somebody please tell me what does the Pause frame mean? Why am I seeing these? How can I eliminate this pause frame?
The applications (especially MS Project) running on PCs on the other side connected to the CPE have very slow response time. Some of them time out due to slow response time.
I have rate selection sequence LRE-SEQ-COMPLETE-REACH and profile LRE-15LL for each of the LRE port. Is there anything else that I can do to improve the performance and get rid of the pause frames? Thank you for your assistance.
Murali.

Thanks for the reply. In my case, the lre sits between two 2950T switches, i.e., uplink via g0/1 port and downlink via an etherchannel with CPE 585 on the other end (2 lre ports connecting to two fast ethernet ports on 2950T). I am not sure what setting I should use and where to turn off this feature. Or is this normal on an LRE switch where the uplink is a faster link and the downlink is a slower link (according to the profile on the lre links, I should be getting 18 MB transmit and 16.67 MB uplink on each of the lre link of the etherchannel).
Looks like it is not a bandwidth issue because the Ciscoview shows the utilization on the interface to be less than 10%. It has to be something to do with latency or other feature on the lre that I am not aware of.
Any suggestion is greatly appreciated. Thanks.
Murali.

  • Tx pause frames on nexus 5548

    Hi guyz,
i am experiencing an issue with the fex's ports to which some servers are connected. These are sometimes not reachable via a ping and i realise a lot of Tx pause frames. could this cause this issue?
Inmy configuration, i have the send admin and flow control operation control set to on and the receive admin  and its flow control operation set to off. what is the recommended configuration of this?
thanks for the help in advance.

Flow control is enabled on by default on FEX and recommended to leave it on. I would not suspect this to be cause of your ping issues though.

  • Pause frames on blade interfaces, what is expected?

I am putting together a UCS runbook for an operational team to use to help with troubleshooting Cisco UCS. I was leveraging some Cisco Live presentations including 'BRKCOM-3002 - UCS Performance Troubleshooting'. In this presentation, when looking at congestion inside UCS the presenter makes a reference to check for pause frames...in this customer's environment I ran the same command for documenting the procedure and noticed many Tx pause frames. Is this normal? Unfortunately I have never checked these counters in other environments so I have nothing to base it off. There are 0 pause frames on LAN uplink interfaces and only a few 100 pause frames on the server downlink interfaces to the FEX. This environment is running VMware ESXi 5.5 U1.

  • 2950 LRE

    Hi All,
I have a situation where a customer wants to connect his office which are 5 KM apart and has a telephone line in between the offices. There is no other media in between the offices. I thought to use the 2950 LRE but it supports at max 5000 feet. Is there any solution that any one of the guys have designed for the situation.
Can I use an adsl router and connect it to 2950 at one end and telehone to other line and use it that way ?
    Regards,
    -amit singh

I think not ... at least not directly.
There are some devices (check www.blackbox.com) that can drive the distance, but I think most are limited speed-wise (given that there is no amplification along the way).
I think about the best you'll be able to get is ~T1/E1.
The other issue is whether the phone line between the offices goes directly between (versus home-runs to the Central Office).
Is wireless an option? Clear line-of-sight? or someplace that both sites can see with clear line-of-sight (i.e., relay)?
Otherwise, you may be stuck in the realm of satellite (i.e., VSAT/USAT - check Hughs website), or pulling media (or getting the Telco to pull media).
    Good Luck

  • Cisco Nexus 5K's Tx Pause Frames with no Rx frames

We have an EMC SAN connected via 10G links on a 5010. At some times we have iSCSI disconnects generated by the SAN.
We are seeing Tx pause frame, but no Rx frames. No packet loss, no errors. The "normal" utilization is around 23Mbit.
Under what conditions might this happen?

    hi Victor
I cannot answer your question but confirm what you are seeing. As far as I am aware of these Tx pause frames are send from the SP when it cannot catch up with switch. If you will re-act on the pause frames you have to activate flow-control on that particular interface. I would expect that the iSCSI protocol handles the session so that it doesn't loose any packets
It is local control packets between the SP's I/F and the Nexus I/F and the nexus hasn't got much buffering to pace a flow with.
We are seeing this behavior between nx5010 switches and EMC VNX5500 SAN. I don't think your disconnects have any thing to do with the pause frames.
    best regards /ti

  • Pause frame requests

I have just started researching EEM and am looking for some guidence in writing an EEM applet or script to report on RXpause frame requests

This script should do what you want.  It will check an interface for its current input pause value, store it, then check if that value increases.  If it does, it will generate a syslog message.  To configure it, you need to set two environment variables:
    event manager environment pause_interval 10
    event manager environment pause_interface GigabitEthernet4/1
Then register the policy.  With the sample values above, the script will check input pauses for Gi4/1 every 10 seconds.

  • FCP 7.2 : colors in canvas change between paused frames and playing frames

    To all the FCP-Experts...
Just before this project I switched from FCP 6 to 7 (clean install) and started using ProRes 422 HQ instead of Blackmagic Uncompressed 10bit.
To my surprise, the preview-picture in the canvas is never the same when playback is paused compared to a running playback. On an external monitor, this effect does not occur. Briefly, the colors when paused are much more saturated.
There are some other minor differences concerning filters when playing back or pausing the image, which I can live with, but the color-difference is most annoying.
    Any help greatly appreciated.

I don't think trimming back does anything.  I've tried it once and also it's not in the media itself.  It is strange though that it appears this way in QT player and then like a strange bump or hit in the video when played in another app like MPEG streamclip.  Very weird!  I'm beginning to think there is just some bugginess with FCP 7.0.3 and Lion 10.7.3.  I should add that I get pretty consistent problems with crashing on my system also.  It's periodic but definitely not the most stable.  Would be great if Apple was still developing this version of FCP but I know that's just not the reality anymore.  Thanks for all your time in looking at the issue with me.

This is nothing.  You get this counters if the port(s) is/are configured as Dot1Q Trunking.
There is nothing to be worried about.

  • Vlan hopping issue btw 2950 (Access) & Cat 6K (Distribution)

Cat 6K is the Distribution Switch & 2950 is the Access Switch
    Cat 6K int Gig 8/16 --- 2950 Fa 0/1
Cat 6K's Gig 8/16 is configured as Access port for Vlan 212 (10.106.167.0/24)
2950 has all its ports in Vlan 1. So, all frames from 2950 is sent untagged to Cat 6K which then tags them as Vlan 212. [Don't ask me why, but this is how they do it in our labs]
The problem here is, hosts configured in one other Vlan i.e. Vlan 244 (10.106.238.0/24) when connected to the 2950 Access Switch, can ping its Gateway 10.106.238.1.
Can someone explain why/how this is happening?

    Hi @rmysored,
The fact that all frames from 2950 are sent untagged to Cat 6K and then Cat 6K tags them as VLAN 212 is because the port Gi8/16 is an access port. Take the following example (Please, see the attached figure first):
     - I have Sw1, Sw2 and PC1
     - Sw1 and Sw2 are connected via a trunk port (passing all the VLANs by default)
     - Sw2 is connecting PC1 via an access port in VLAN 10
When PC1 is sending frames to Sw2 it sends it untagged because PCs don't recognize tags and tipically they don't know in what VLAN they are
But when Sw2 is sending those frames (from PC1) to Sw1, Sw2 tags those frames as part of VLAN 10 because Sw2 is passing more VLANs to Sw1 via the trunk link and it has to recognize where the frames belongs to when they return back
In your case, Cat 6K is tagging the frames coming from the 2950 as part of VLAN 212 because its port facing the 2950 (an access port) is configured as part of that VLAN.
In the other hand, can you share the configurations of the Cat6K and 2950 for deeper investigations?
    Hope to see your answers.

Mikhail, thank you for your answer.
I am to draw attention to LED on my C2960, but LED on C2960 newer blinking amber. And IOS version on my device (12.2(25)FX) top-of-the IOS version specified in your link.
I think it's a problem of HWIC-4ESW installed on 1841, but i do not have one more HWIC for check up. And what strange occurrence, that is all other interfaces on HWIC newer have errors while work with hosts directly connected to interface.

  • Color shift between play and pause

    Hello,
On CC 7.0 and 7.1, I noticed there is an important color shift between pausing and playing my timeline when using "CineForm Visually Perfect" encoded source material.
This is especially noticeable on reds.
Using other codecs, there is no such shift.
My video card is a Geforce 650M. At first, I thaught it might be related to the video overlay settings of the card, but there are no such settings in the control panel.
Besides, using Quicktime to play the source produces no shift as well.
As I am often doing color correction using Premiere, and as I have dropped Avid exactly because I always had this same problem (when using a profiled calibrated screen), I would like to know precisely what is going on. As I'm regularly producing shows for broadcast, it is a real problem not to be sure whether what you see matches the final exported output in all circumstances.
NB : For the need of searching the cause of this problem I disabled any custom profiling of my screen.
    Thanks ! for any answers.
    Fred

Sure and thanks. But nevertheless, if you color correct using a calibrated screen, and produce for the web ; or if you do a first pass of color correction before the ultimate pass happens with a "properly calibrated TV", wouldn't you like that your paused frame would look like your playing frame ?

  • Bright white screen when video is paused.

    Hello All,
I've looked everywhere for a solution to this problem and there has been no previous discussion. Basically, whenever the Video is paused, instead of the paused frame being shown, there is a bright white screen. It is worth nothing that this issue happens when I use the Darwin Streaming server. If I serve the video using IIS, the issue is not present.
This issue using the  Quicktime plugin is present in Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and IE.
If someone could push me in the right direction, it would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks.

  • Occassional packet loss on LAN

I have two 3560G-48 Dist switches and 8 2950-48-EI access switches in two groups of 4 uplinked with a fibre link to each 3560. I have RPVST running.
Every now and then, my monitoring server will show an access switch as not responding to ICMP. This always happens after I have made a port vlan change but it doesn't happen every time.
Also, I am monitoring the HSRP address of the VLAN I am on, and out of 4400 pings sent every 2 seconds, 4 failed. This doesn't sound like much, but I thought I would easily be able to show 100% uptime for the LAN rather than the 99.91% it currently shows. There are a few buffer misses but none attributable to memory failure.
Is missing the odd icmp request anything to be worried about? I ask because the other week users complained of loss of connectivity for about 1 minute. However, I was on the native VLAN at the time and experienced no such loss. I checked the logs and there were no STP topology changes, no faults in syslog, no high cpu usage, no memory issues. Nothing that might explain it.
    Any suggestions?

even further to this, I have the following data:

So the problem is definitely on the fibre link between the 3560 and the 2950. No links between 2950s show errors, nor does the redundant link to the other 3560. Both switch groups, I have two, show the same problems. The 3560 shows no errors.
Could there be some sort of compatibility issue between the 3560 and 2950? I have two different IOS versions on the 2950s in one group and the other.
    *scratching my head*
